This is a comic about my persona character Dime, and his Persona Icarus.
The lyrics are from the song “Run To You” by Pentatonix
This idea of having a persona really resonates with me, it has always resonated with me and I didn’t really know why at first, but I know why now.
A lot of things have happened over the last few months. And I’m going to go into it because I think I just... want to? I feel ready to? And I wouldn’t call this publicly, since I don’t even think that people really see much of my stuff on tumblr anymore but I feel something... better. Some kind of closure regarding talking about things on here somehow.
I was diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (or DID) right before COVID got really bad. Some people likely know it by the previous term: “Multiple Personality Disorder” or “Split Personality Disorder”.
I’m learning new things about myself and the system I’m a part of every day. And the memory troubles, the issues that come with dissociative disorders as a whole... its a lot.
I realized that a lot of what I based my “Shadow” on was actually an alter. My shadow in this little idea, this concept of having a persona, he turns into the persona “Icarus”. I’ve had this idea for years now, having my own persona and who/what it would be. I just wasn’t expecting... 1. having DID. or 2. One of my alters is literally named Icarus.
This comic was sort of a manifestation of that. Of fears, of if this would change my thoughts on Shadows or Personas or anything because it was how I was coping with DID without really realizing it. And the concept of this comic in particular has to do with my character Dime losing his Persona and ending up back trapped in the place his Shadow resides.  It hits home. It hurts just right, I suppose.  And I really am proud of how this came out.
I know I haven’t posted in a very long time, especially my art, but I hope this is a good explanation as to why I’ve been so quiet for so long.
I’ve made a lot of good friends through tumblr. Had a lot of falling-outs with people. I appreciate all of the people who I’ve talked to over my time here, even if I have a hard time remembering you guys. (I suppose I understand why, now.)
But in the end. This is my comic, this is Dime, this is me. I hope you enjoy.
Feel free to send me a message if you’d like to talk, if you’re curious. Or even if you’re just... someone I haven’t talked to in a while. I appreciate you all.
-Dimitri

I want to be a creative technologist because…
Intro:
Hi my name is Cameron and I want to be a creative technologist because…
To me a creative technologist is someone who has the future in mind. That looks
At a situation and says how can I change this? What can I create? How can I improve?
Creative technologies is a multi disciplinary field, which means they do not have the boundaries
Of being in one discipline they can jump between them using skills and knowledge from each
Area such as engineering, design, business, arts and so on.
I read a good book called creative confidence by David and Tom Kelley they describe creativity as a muscle that can be strengthened and nurtured, not something you are born with or without.
I have always considered myself problem solver, I want to be able to look at wicked problems
And be able to positively impact them. A wicked problem is something that is determined as difficult or impossible to solve situation because of its incomplete, contradictory and changing nature, some examples poverty, climate change and education. The reason wicked problems are seen as impossible to solve is that they require knowledge from multiple disciples. This is why in my opinion  Creative technologists have the best chance of impacting wicked problems with their broad knowledge and collaborative nature.
Ive been called a jack of all trades.
Since leaving school and working full time I have always had an interest in engineering, design and business. I could never seem to make up my mind of what to study, I knew I couldn’t studying one discipline as my passions involved a bit of everything when I finally came across the creative technologies course at AUT I was thrilled to have found a profession that incorporated so many disciplines and had a similar outlook on life as I did.
While growing up I was always the person taking something apart to figure out how it worked and if I could improve it. Every time I was out with friends my mind would wonder looking at everything trying to picture in my head how that item was made and why was it made.
When I left school I immediately went into to work full time as I was told that there was no profession for what I wanted to do and that the ones that had a resemblance to my passions I wasn’t good enough for. So I went to the first thing that came along which was retail, while in retail I worked my way up to managing a store. This is wear my love of leadership and mentoring came from, having not lost my passion for creating and tinkering I left retail and got some brief work experience in engineering factories and construction yet nothing grab my attention they all seemed to be focused in an area of expertise that was focused on one discipline never did I see retail, engineering and construction share knowledge to create something spectacular.
I want to be a creative technologist because I want to be multi disciplinary, I want to think outside of the box not just follow the instructions, rules given to me, I want to collaborate with people to create, to change, to improve the world around us. I want narrow limitations by creating prosthetics for those with disorders and disabilities so they can tackle there dreams, maybe I want to create a virtual world for those who can’t leave their homes or hospital to connect with their community. Or do I want to help tackle our planets environmental impacts, The point is I might not know what way I want to impact the world but I do know that for me being a creative technologist is my way to start.

MENTAL HEALTH WITH NIM: DID
Tumblr media
Hey sweet peas! Nimbus here and I have what’s known as DID!! What is DID you ask? It’s short for Dissociative Identity Disorder !! It was known as multiple personality disorder until the 90′s--when they gained a better understanding and changed the name. You don’t have to read this, but it would mean a whole awful lot to me if you did!
First a disclaimer! DID is unique to everyone like many disorders and while some core facts are the same, please not I only have one experience and one side of this multi-faceted disorder!
DID is formed in ages 7-9 and only in this stage of childhood. It is caused by repeated and/or extreme trauma. The person who has developed DID (aka me!!) will have no memory of their childhood. That’s right! I don’t remember anything--and any memories I have are vague and fuzzy, like they happened to someone else. I only have one very clear memory--but I only recovered it fairly recently via therapy.
That brings us to our next issue--DID causes severe memory loss. I’m not talking a few hours--Im talking losing days, weeks, months, and even years. I’ve had to work very hard with my disorder and therapy to get a better handle on this loss of time--but that’s still fairly recent and I do still lose time. The reason I bring this up is because I might not remember a conversation we had--or something I was supposed to do for you.
I forget birthdays, anniversaries, important dates, etc so much--like i don’t even remember my mums. Bits and pieces of my life are like shadows in my mind and I have to do some digging and info-seeking to find it out. It’s very difficult and I feel very guilty about it...so please never take it personally if I don’t remember something. It’s not because I don’t care , but because my mind is literally fragmented.
Expanding on that--DID is a defensive disorder created by your mind to try and protect you from your trauma. So you know how in 7-9 your ‘parts’ of personality are slowly integrating to create you? The trauma disrupts this and your parts stay separate, creating alters. These alters often create their own personas; become their own people. The bugger thing is, once you’ve split--you can do it later again when you’re older. That’s right! If I’m traumatized enough, it could cause me to split again--because now my brain has recognized this ‘split’ as a defensive tactic.
I’m pretty lucky that because I’ve been getting therapy (and FINALLY got a diagnosis; like I’m medically diagnosed with this disorder) I’ve been able to avoid further splits. At this time I have eight alters I am aware of whom I communicate with almost like a family; this is how I’ve been able to cut down on my memory loss. It’s still a bit like watching myself through tv, but at least I’m more aware of what happened.
              Some quick terminology!!
Protector: an alter who keeps the system safe
Alter: The ‘part’ that split.
System: The name for the collective unit of alters and host/original.
Host: the alter who is living the individuals life most of the time, might not be the original.
Original: the individual who was originally traumatized and ended up with DID. (I am both the host and the original).
Gatekeeper: Someone who monitors what alters are allowed to interact with the rest of the system and what memories are allowed to be accessed. If there are Persecutors in the system, they keep them at bay.
Persecutor: An alter who often exhibits the behavior of the person who was abusive/caused the trauma. Usually only harmful to the system itself. It is rare for persecutors to cause harm to outside individuals, but they may say cruel things.
Internal self-helper: An alter who is mostly on in the system that makes sure everyone is where they need to be; aka sort of like the maintenance guy.
Trauma holder: An alter who holds the memories of the trauma that cause their split.
Little: An alter who maintains the appearance and mindset of a child; usually the result of the initial trauma from ages 7-9.
Non-human: An alter who is not human. Can be a mythical being but is typically an animal presenting alter.
Fictive: An alter who has the ‘memories’ and personality of a fictional person as well as their appearance and name.
Headspace: This is an internal world sort of like Sherlocks ‘mind palace’ from the BBC show where all the alters can interact with each other and ‘live’. How it appears is different for everyone–my headspace is a cabin in the woods.
Age: Alters can be the same age as the orginal or older/younger. They are, essentially, their own people in many ways.
Co-existence: A therapy method in which you learn to live and function with your alters (this is the therapy I use)
Integration: A form of therapy where the original and/or host begins to integrate the alter into their singular personality (aka going through the process that was disrupted in childhood). This can also occur between alters.
I have a very good relationship with my alters but it wasn’t always this way. I’ve had a lot of issues in the past with varying personality traits, time loss, etc. I’ve even had a few toxic relationships in which I was the toxic party--partly due to not having a good handle on what was going on. Now no one should use this as an excuse! I am as at fault for my alters actions as I would be if they were my own so don’t let anyone excuse bad behavior with ‘my alter did it, not me!’ because they can absolutely work on getting a better handle of them.
I will say that people with DID who have not gotten a better handle on their alters deserve your grace and patience where you feel you can give it; it’s frightening to know that sometimes there’s basically a whole other person driving your body. You don’t need to, nor are expected to excuse harm--but hopefully you can at least offer some understanding--because that’s all any person suffering from this disorder can ask for. It’s especially hard when you’re undiagnosed and have no idea what’s going on--only that something is wrong (I speak from experience here hhh--)
You ready for another term? Ok so alters often will ‘front’, this is like to say if you were driving a car--whoever is fronting is driving the car. The car is your body (obviously). So if you’re in the passenger seat, you probably still are aware of what’s going on, even if you’re no longer in control--if you’re in the backseat you have a vague idea of what’s happening, but it’s not really clear to you--you’re there but removed. If you are in the trunk you have no idea what’s going on--you’re completely blind to anything being said or happening. Even when I (Nimbus) am not fronting, I’m typically in the passenger seat anymore--but I used to only be in the back seat or the trunk...so it’s taken a year or so of work to get here.
This is a disorder that is very important to me to talk about because I don’t wanna feel ashamed or crazy of something my brain did to protect me so I’m gonna be more vocal about it here! You are welcome to ask myself or my alters questions in IM’s or in my ask box! You may not however ask about my trauma, that’s just rude and unkind. I can also send you resources for people who talk about DID that I feel are trustworthy in their info. My disorder is nothing to be ashamed of and I’m happy to share it with you!
Below is a list of seven of my alters whom you may ask questions as well!
Roxas: Main protector. 26. He/him. True neutral. aro/ace. coffee addict. Teasingly known as ‘sk8r boy’. Not related to the kh roxas. Like sunsets, coffee, snap backs, and hiking. Pitches my voice down a bit.
Dimitri: Physical protector/gatekeepr. He/him. blunt/asshole. some sort of chaotic alignment. 25. Means well but could stand to be a little gentler about things. Likes leather, alcohol, dancing, and fighty-aesthetics. Pitches my voice down a lot.
Sage: Caretaker. he/him. 31. the mom friend. Will make you tea and listen to all your problems. Will suggest good books. Lawful good. Likes soothing aesthetics, once upon a time, tea, sweaters, leggings, and classical music. Talks in full and VERY formal sentences. Has a softer tone than me.
Salem: Internal self-helper. 21. he/him. really sunny personality. lawful good. genuinely a good person. minor anxiety. likes exercise, healthy foods, and bubbly music. Has a country bumpkin british accent (kind of?). Will call you ‘love’ or ‘lovey’
Koumei: Caretaker. he/him/they/them. 23. genderqueer. “lets talk about how that feels”. Makes sure i’m honest during counseling sessions. Likes crop tops, those cloth elephant pants you see in hipster stores, yoga, tea, east asia aesthetics, and meditative music. Whisper-talks. SHY.
Carter: Gatekeepr. he/him. 18. ace. grumpy/moody teenager. awkward phase. ‘lol bold of you to assume I process anything’. Stays in room almost 24/7. blunt. likes video games, beanies, hoodies, jeans, sneakers, and sleeping during the day. Doesn’t change my voice really.
Bubble: non-human. Some sort of fairy? Genderless but uses he/him. Likes to look like a meow wow cause they make me happy. Age is a mystery. Can appear human and typically chooses a little boy. Lets have a good time everyone!! Like to color, play games, do child-like things/watch child-like shows. ‘reconnect with your inner child nim!’. LOUD and BUBBLY.
Thank you for reading and again if you have any questions for us let me know !! I love you all <3333

Uuuhhhh sanders sides mental hospital au with a bunch of cliches that literally no one asked for but it's also a soulmate au????
uhh warnings for disorder talk, suicide mention, swearing?
Polyamsanders mostly
Main story line?
When Virgil was a kid his parents were nice and all, but they did punish him for seemingly random things
They had him do chores a very specific way and if it wasn't done that way, he had to do it again and again to make sure it was proper
It resulted in him having a very high anxiety disorder, both socially and in general
He found he couldn't talk to a lot of people afraid to mess up, and over thinking how he messed up
Especially when it came to his soulmates
Had never written to them, refused to look at their notes, didn't think he would be able to keep them with how he is
Does not do well in messy environments, not necessarily OCD, but close
When he managed to move out his anxiety left his home foodless, and he couldn't talk to get food, so he went hungry
Ended up a cycle and punishment system for himself
Can't talk so can't eat, couldn't talk don't deserve to eat
Someone found him passed out in the laundry room of his apartment complex
Doctors found him extremely malnourished and unable to communicate, so they sent him to the mental hospital to get better
Virgil had the absolute worst time adjusting, had multiple panic attacks every day for like a week straight
He wouldn't talk to anyone and could barely be forced out of bed to join group sessions or meal times
Barely ate anything and almost passed out again
After two weeks of straight up anxiety and no food exhaustion, he finally got tired enough to actually talk to his therapist
Dr Picani is wonderful, says things light hearted and never tries to pry. The kind of therapist to make a small joke or reference to make sure his clients aren't having huge breakdowns
Virgil does open up to him, they decide to tackle the anorexia first
It's difficult to convince Virgil he’s worthy of eating and that food should never under any circumstances be used negatively
But they manages to get him to at least eat something and that's a start
The first time Picani asks about virgil’s soulmate, Virgil has a panic attack
And every time after as well
Come to find out the word 'soulmate' is triggering to him
Sudden flashes of hunger pains and a blinding feeling he's not worth it
They start using the word heartbound
Virgil starts trying to hang out and talk to some of the other residents
Has a panic attack before he can say hi, but the others walk him back to his room and invite him to hang out later
He does, and its good for his recovery
It takes some time to get virgil proper anxiety medication, his body rejects the first two, throwing up and feeling too tired
Virgil wants to stop feeling helpless and so scared all the time, wants to start getting better
They get him on a small dose of one kind, and it works for a while
Picani convinces Virgil that even if he wants to get better on his own, his heartbounds deserve to know he exists, that Virgil shouldn't be afraid to do so
So Virgil does, with overwhelming support from people he doesn't know
He doesn't talk to them, but he no longer hides their notes from himself
Visiting/progress update day is coming up, and with Picani there to tell him it's okay, Virgil writes the address of the hospital asking them to come
He gets confirmation and is able to calm himself out of an attack before it can really start
It's a good day
They carefully raise his dosage till he can be more personable, more himself
He's shaking visiting day, a message on his arm that his heartbounds will be wearing black, blue, and red respectively
So when three people walk in, one in a black button up with the sleeves rolled up to their elbows, another in a blue tee with a design on it that looks like it could be a grandma sweater, and another in a red shirt with white sleeves and heeled boots, Virgil almost faints
There's a lot going for him and it's hard to handle
So the one in the blue sweater is the first to notice Virgil staring bugeyed at them and just knows
So they all go over to him and Virgil stands in a daze and just falls into their arms, clinging to each of them with all he has
They whisper words of encouragement and love and someone is kissing his head and hands and gosh there's a lot going on
The actual session is good, Picani tells virgil’s heartbounds his progress (eating more, anxiety medication getting to the right spot, self confidence boosted) and they are so happy and proud!!!!
Almost a panic attack when they mention 'soulmate', Virgil manages to coax himself out of it while Picani carefully explains triggers
It's a tearful and loving goodbye and Virgil is sure he might just explode because his mind had thought about this moment before and it's never been this good and this is real and oh god hes crying and now the other ones are crying and hugging him and it's a lot
He's damn exhausted at the end of the day
But he has his heartbound now, and it's okay
Eventually he does get out, better, happier, healthier, and his heartbound are 170% so ready to have him in their lives
Other character notes
Picani and Logan are brothers, Picani is older by 6 years
Picani has cute art all over his session room, also a bunch of blankets
Always has candy
Studied psychology because of his soulmate, wanted to help them get better
Turns out you can't be your soulmates therapist so oops
He likes his job a lot anyways
Logan is a history professor
He's also on the autistic spectrum
Very sound sensitive
Doesn't understand social cues a lot, not sure how to properly small talk, and ends up leaving out information that might be important
Such as telling his brother Picani that he has another soulmate who is in therapy who finally talked to him, the day Virgil writes to his soulmates for the first time
He doesn't understand why he's being teased for this
Gets in the habit of telling Virgil "this is a comfortable silence for me" because sometimes Logan will just stop and think and its.. very quiet
He also says obvious things, because honestly, it's nice for Virgil
"I find your company an enjoyable addition to my life" "this conversation is pleasant, I am just done talking now"
Hyperfixation on space and stars and history
Stims upset but clenching and unclenching his hands, happy stims by tapping
Patton works at a daycare center
Has adhd
It's hard for him to sit still and focus, can't remember a lot of things no matter how often hes been told
Has every single fidget product ever
Works best when he has three things to do at once
When he gets into hyperfocus, it's really difficult to get him out of it
Ends up skipping meals and other daily activities because of it
Wet himself once because he knew that if he moved from his spot he would never get back into the same groove
He's very embarrassed by this fact
Hyperfixates on dog and cat breeds
Roman does a bunch of shit
Acts, dances, designs, creates, anything that involves doing and 'art' has doing it
Has manic depressive bipolar disorder
His room is atrocious and there are half finished projects everywhere
He can never seem to complete anything, and when he does he hates it
His depressive episodes come about after finishing things or having not finished something in a long time
He feels worthless and that he can't do anything
His lows are not often, but they hit hard.
He's very dead to the world in such a state, likes it when Logan reads to him
Was treated by Picani too
They have all been living together for three years before getting their first message from virgil
Patton FLIPPED OUT, Roman screamed, and Logan kind of just went 'oh' but they could tell he was happy because he kept tapping his hands to his legs
At the hospital virgil made friends with the following people:
Elliot is one of the first to welcome Virgil and always invited Virgil to hang with the rest of them, no matter how many times Virgil said no
Virgil walks past the hang out room, he calls to ask if he wants to hang out, virgil shakes his head hard and runs. every day for like a month until virgil says yes.
Got really happy when Virgil said yes
In the hospital to get over trauma from an abusive relationship, flinches a lot
Declan, is, an asshole
He's also a pathological liar
has scratches down the side of his face from when one of his parents threw a vase at him
No one knows what is real name is, said is was felio, fabian, Damien, declan, dimitri, dolos, lionel, loki, belial, cody, and on one momentous occasion, Samantha
Most of the names he give a start with d, so most just call him Dee or declan, its the name he gives out most
Sometimes hell ask to be called a certain name for a day, everyone just rolls with it
Declan learned to lie and lie well due to overly strict and picky parents, it was to protect himself from them and even protect his older brother who was a lot softer than him
older brother, who is actually called fabian, is there for him on visiting day.
Will say something, wince, take a deep breath, then say the truth with a lot of effort
Writing is so much easier for him
Has insane trust issues, his name being one of them, only his family really know it
Has only told his soulmate his name
Picani knows his name, won’t tell anyone
Remy
Is also an asshole but like in a nice way?
Fucking loud to compensate for how tired he really is
In his own words, ‘has insomnia and is depressed A-F’
Wanted to kill himself
Will claim Starbucks saved his life to be dramatic, only few people know why, declan virgil and picani know
Remy is the kind of depressed where he wouldn’t kill himself because of 'future obligation’
'My parents aren’t home I could easily do it but I told them I would feed the cats and they wont get fed if i do it now’ or 'i have so much time but I told my friend i would edit their essay and I need to do that first’
Went out with friends to just dick around, got a stupid fancy drink at Starbucks, and told his mom about it when he got home
Decided he would kill himself tomorrow, he gave his friends one last good memory, told his mom he loved her, he was ready
Next day his mom give a him a 50$ gift card to starbucks, told him it’s for him and his friends because that’s the happiest she’s seen him in so long
He fucking broke down because he can’t kill himself now, he can’t waste her money or her kindness but he’s so fucking tired and so done and he can’t do it anymore
She supports him as best she can and gets him to the hospital
During visiting day she brings his friends, all wearing matching sunglasses, and a coffee carrier with like five different drinks all for him
They all scream at each other happily and they talk about how much better he looks, how much happier
His friends are the slowmo super heroes and sun and moon
No one in the hospital knows his soulmate or if he even has one
uhh taadaa! do with this what you will

~WARNING: SOME MENTIONS OF KH3 SPOILERS, any questions about them must be taken to the messages~
This is actually based off of an SU Animatic of the song "This is Gospel" by Panic! At the Disco: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPWyES…
(WARNING: Fan or not, this is super sad)
This is originally supposed to be just Neashi in response to the Kingdom Hearts 3 ending, but I decided to include all my OCs there, besides it gives me a chance to draw out Kaze, Dimitri, Brigitte, and Sleep Bringer finally. Anyways onto the picture and what's behind it:
Each of my characters is displaying their insecurities, sorrows, and flaws, something that no Nobody should display.
The purple one is Dimitri Achilles - He has what I like to call the "Don Juan Complex", which he had developed at a very young age due to his parents' divorce, his mother leaving affected him mentally, he began to have affairs with multiple women to fill the emptiness that his mother failed to fill. This mentality carried on for years even after becoming a Nobody, during that time, he uses his affairs to feel the emotions he lost as a Somebody. The picture above shows that he's holding a woman with a blank look on his face, showing indifference to his lovers.
The red one is Kaze Matsuoka - He was really close to his older brother when he was young, but after losing him to the Heartless attack in Radiant Garden, he became wrecked with grief and rage. He believed that his murderer was Ansem's Apprentice, Xehanort, due to training to become an apprentice, thus joining the project to get close to his Nobody Xemnas. He has a strong dislike for anyone with Yellow or Orange eyes because of this. The picture above shows him carrying a bouquet of flowers to put on his brother's grave.
The blue one is Third Sleep Bringer - They had Anxiety Disorder since childhood which causes them to not speak for themselves nor interact with others. Though the disorder became lost after becoming a Nobody, their mutism as a result of their anxiety still stuck by them, rendering them completely silent...However, there are still times where they do feel like having an Anxiety Attack. The picture above is of Sleep Bringer having said Anxiety, the only sound you hear from them is screaming and whimpering.
The orange one is Brigitte - As haughty and whimsical as she appears on the outside, she had a hidden other side; apathetic, resentful, and nihilistic. She grew up being treated as a "witch" by Judge Claude Frollo in La Cité des Cloches(The City of Bells) because she and her people are Romanis, she was sentenced to be burned at the stake by the time the Heartless attacked her world and turned her into a Nobody. This resulted in have little to no respect for Religion, Judges, and the law. The picture above shows her contemplating on the scars she received prior to her execution.
The green one is Neashi Tamiki - She was "abandoned" by her friends and had been used by countless people, including Mr. Pere Noel, for personal gain, developing trust issues as a result. Hence why she shows little affection for her peers. Although she was able to get over it after bonding with more friends, she again lost trust in people upon losing her memory, by the time she does remember, it would be too late. In addition, she also lost her loved ones to death or to Darkness, having been traumatized by her parents' death. The picture above shows a wounded Neashi grieving over the news of the Aftermath of the Keyblade War from an anonymous sender...having learned that she lost two of her friends she cared for.

I was terrified that smartphones would harm my toddler, but the latest research suggests there are benefits
Smartphones and tablets are irresistible to children, but many parents aren't sure how to responsibly manage their use.
Plus, scientists don't really know how using interactive screens influences brain development.
Meanwhile, screen-time guidelines have struggled to keep pace.
The good news: Experts are beginning to discover some potential benefits for kids from interactive media.
This is an installment of Business Insider's "Your Brain on Apps" series that investigates how addictive apps can influence behavior.
My smartphone's screen fades to black, closing a magic portal to a realm of singing and dancing beasts. "EHMAAA! EHMAAA!" screams my 21-month-old daughter, angling for her third or fourth YouTube video of Elmo, the red and cuddly high-pitched monster of "Sesame Street."
Elmo is found everywhere in our home because anything that looks like him, even my pitiful drawings of him, elicit her screams of joy. "Sesame Street" is highly rated educational content for toddlers, so my wife and I will occasionally indulge her with YouTube videos.
But I'm worried about screen time, its potential negative effects on her development, and its seemingly addictive nature. After all, many Silicon Valley parents heavily restrict screen use, including Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Did we start her on screens too young? How much exposure is too much? What distinguishes good versus bad content? Should we push books, Legos, and other real-world activities for her developing brain? Or is it a lost cause with the planet increasingly awash in touchscreens and interactive content?
"Smartphones are in 98% of homes across the US with children under 8 years of age," Rachel Barr, a developmental-psychology researcher at Georgetown University, told me.
To find answers, I spoke with Barr and other experts, reviewed some of the most popular guidelines and squared them against the latest scientific research, then factored in the realities of parenting.
While some studies suggest heavy smartphone use may stress the brains of teens and adults, what I learned about raising toddlers in the smartphone age dialed back my panic and gave me a lot of hope for my daughter's increasingly digital future.
The murky truth about 'digital addiction'
If you're concerned about how kids use TVs, smartphones, tablets, and other devices, you're not alone. In 2016, the nonprofit Common Sense Media surveyed 620 parents and 620 of their teenage kids in the US. About half of the teens said they "feel addicted" to their phones while 59% of the parents also felt their teens were addicted.
But how the word "addiction" is used by the public — often in a shameful, black-and-white, all-or-nothing context — and how scientists and doctors think about the problem is different.
For example, when looking at substance-use disorders, including drugs like alcohol, opioids, and cocaine, the fifth edition of the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (DSM-5) couches addiction as a spectrum disorder with multiple shades of severity. Some usage patterns lead to problems in some people but not others, or do so to a lesser degree.
Additionally, "digital addiction" remains a fiercely contested concept, in spite of the World Health Organization's recent move to include "gaming disorder" in its own codex of maladies, called the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
"There's a lot of disagreement about what that thing is. There's a larger chicken-and-egg kind of argument," Chris Ferguson, a clinical psychologist who studies the effects of media on children at Stetson University, told Business Insider.
People overdo media, but people overdo lots of other things too — food and sex and work and exercise.
"There's no question that people overdo media, but people overdo lots of other things too — food and sex and work and exercise," he said. "So one question is, is the overuse of media different from the overuse of all these other things?"
According to some evidence, Ferguson said, overuse of technologies like smartphone apps and video games may just be one facet of larger, underlying mental-health problems.
"In other words, a person already has depression, anxiety, [attention-deficit disorder] — something of that sort — before they start having difficulty regulating their media use," Ferguson said. It isn't clear whether the tech itself shoulders any blame, other than being a good escape.
"People are drawn to fun things, and some people have difficulty regulating the use of those fun things," he added.
But such disagreements don't negate a potential for harm, especially among young kids, said Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital.
"We think a lot about digital addiction in older children and adults, but I think the roots of it, especially nowadays, are going to increasingly be in infancy," Christakis, who directs the hospital's Center for Child Health, Behavior, and Development, told Business Insider.
Screen time and kids' brain development
From infancy through toddlerhood, kids are obsessed with exploring cause and effect, Christakis said. This exploratory phase coincides with a remarkable period of brain development.
We think a lot about digital addiction in older children and adults, but I think the roots of it, especially nowadays, are going to increasingly be in infancy.
My daughter's brain probably weighed about 333 grams at her birth, but it will swell to 1,000 grams by the time she's 2 years old, a 300% increase in mass. Her brain will grow by only another 300 grams or so over the following 18 to 20 years.
By the time she's 3, the synapses or connections between her brain's thinking cells, called neurons, will have multiplied sixfold from birth. Those abundant connections are itching to get organized, and incessantly interacting with the world (including with electronics) is how those refinements happen. But the truth is we still don't know to what extent exposure to smartphones and other touchscreen devices has on development.
"I honestly think that this is one of the million-dollar questions," Barr said. "We know very little."
There's a dearth of data in part because it's difficult to measure the brains of rambunctious children who may be scared by big MRI machines or unable to stay perfectly still inside of them.
Barr is working to change that as the director of Georgetown's Early Learning Project, which focuses on kids' digital-media use at age 5 years and younger.
In the ELP's "media and the mind" experiments, for example, Barr's team has kids interact with custom-built apps while they wear a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device. It's a stretchy cap lined with bright infrared lights and sensors. The lights illuminate the kids' brains through their skulls, and the sensors constantly measures the emissions to quantify the brain's electrical activity.
The system is quick, comfortable, and safe, so Barr's team is using it on toddlers to measure the effects of different media on young minds.
This new approach hasn't yet been used for long-term studies. But by looking at a kid's behavior, memory recall, and other observations — as scientists have done for decades with TV media — Barr's work offers insights into what is and isn't good for children when it comes to screens.
"Content is really, really critical," she said. "It's just that we don't really know how that is associated with brain development, or changes in brain development, or any of those questions, because we haven't directly measured it yet."
For instance, there's a lot of evidence that having a screen on in the background (such as TV noise) lowers the quality of kids' play, reading, and conversation. It also seems to impair or delay the development of language and executive function, which is a mental bucket that contains noticing details, committing them to memory, and then applying them to future relevant situations.
"We know that babies don't understand [background TV] and it does change their ability to play," Barr said. "That's a real problem. It interrupts their play; it interrupts parents' discussions with their children."
How early is too early?
Parents are pounded over the head with the idea that kids under 2 years shouldn't use screens at all. Actually, the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest — and popular — recommendations for media use in children, published in November 2016, has revised that age to 18 months, advising that screen exposure at 18 months and younger doesn't seem to confer any benefits.
But newer research suggests that age limit isn't so straightforward.
Take one surprising finding from a recent study of 25 families who volunteered to let researchers record short video-chat sessions with grandparents on FaceTime, Skype, and Google Hangouts. The kids were 6 months to 24 months old, yet the researchers said they were "remarkably successful" at following the focus and directions of another person (in this case, their on-screen grandparents), a property called joint attention.
Joint attention is a foundation to learning language, abstract thinking, and a raft of other abilities, including a way to forge emotional relationships with long-distance family members.
Another recent experiment with video chatting and kids 12 months to 25 months suggest they learn significantly more from interactive sessions than watching a prerecorded video of roughly the same lesson.
And supervised video-chatting may even be helpful for older kids, since studies show kids younger than 7 struggle to use telephones to communicate solely through audio.
Christakis was a lead author on those AAP recommendations, which references nearly 50 scientific studies — most of them focused on TV media, plus some newer investigations into interactive mobile devices and their content.
He said that 18-month cutoff was a big revision to the organization's previous recommendations, which advised not exposing kids younger than 2 years old. But, he explained, the previous rule viewed "all screens" equally.
"The childhood screen experience is no longer what it used to be," Christakis said. "There's video chatting, there's reading a book on an iPad, and if we sort of conflate all of these activities as 'screen time,' we're missing the reality of the experience that Skyping grandma is different than watching Baby Einstein."
We're missing the reality of the experience that Skyping grandma is different than watching Baby Einstein.
One reason the recommendations don't match with the research is that the AAP traditionally reviews its guidelines just once every five years, even though technology changes far faster than that. It also takes time, effort, and money to perform and publish large, high-quality studies. "There's clearly been a recognition that's not fast enough in areas like this, where the terrain is changing so rapidly," Christakis said.
As an example, he said that the iPad, coveted by many children, came out eight years ago, in 2010, around the time the AAP published its previous guidelines. New recommendations at least every two years makes more sense, according to Christakis.
How much is too much?
Another often spread recommendation is that kids have their screen time limited to no more than two hours a day.
The AAP's newest recommendations actually halve the "two hours a day" to "no more than 1 hour per day" for kids age 2 to 5 years, and emphasizes a focus on "high-quality programming," including PBS's "Sesame Street" and "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."
The guidelines also advise shutting off screens at meals, to encourage conversation, and at least an hour before bed, since screen use can delay sleep and lower sleep quality in kids. This is in part because blue-light exposure is known to affect the body's circadian rhythm. (The same recommendations apply to adults.)
The core rationale to limiting screen time, though, is based on many studies of sedentary TV-watching: the more of it kids get, the greater their risk for obesity seems to be, along with delays in language, cognitive, and social-emotional development. But the AAP itself says the research on mobile screens is thin at best, because traditional TV is neither interactive, nor portable, nor as overrun with fast-food advertisements.
To Christakis, it's really a question of how far "good" content can go when kids have only so much time in a day.
"The upside for very young children is being exaggerated when people talk about the educational value," Christakis went on. "If two-thirds of their home time is being spent with an iPad or watching a television program — even if they're educational programs, even if they're high-quality programs — what are they not doing?"
If two-thirds of their home time is being spent with an iPad or watching a television program ... what are they not doing?
The answer: They are not doing a lot of things "that are really important to young children' cognitive and emotional and social development," he said.
Ferguson, who's know for contrarian views in his field, also takes issue with some the AAP's recommendations, especially with the imperative that content always be educational, all the time.
"Obviously there are certain activities that are going to most likely result in learning for [kids]," he said. "But babies can't do that every hour they're awake. They're going to get frustrated and crazy, and the parents will too. I think that's where sometimes the advice gets pernicious: Advising the parent that the baby always has to be on, and the parent always has to be on, and neither can take a break."
The same holds true for preschool kids. A December 2017 study on screen use by the UK's National Survey of Children's Health is one of the largest and most recent. It questioned 19,957 parents around 2012 about their 2- to 5-year-old kids. It found "little or no support for harmful links between digital screen use and young children's psychological well-being," the study's authors wrote.
In other words, the two-hour-per-day limit is meant to be a guideline for most families on most days, not an ironclad rule of law.
"Each parent makes decisions — rightly — based on how their own child is affected," Christakis said, adding that "some children may not be at risk at all" for extended screen time.
Ferguson also feels that parents should mostly trust their gut on what's appropriate for their kids, and that it's OK to bend the rules now and then and just for fun.
"You're allowed to take a break, and you're allowed to let your toddler take a break and do something goofy for awhile," Ferguson said. "Be strategic, but mellow out a little bit too. Half an hour, an hour spent with a screen isn't going to break your kid."
The benefits of tech
With so much focus on the risks that smartphones may bring to families, it's easy to forget about the potential benefits, including video-chatting.
Touchscreens provide what Christakis calls "contingent responses." When kids touch the screen they make something predictably and reliably happen. That's not only a fun experience for kids, he says, but "has a potential big upside" — used correctly — for learning information and concepts that static media like books, TV, and toys can't offer.
Barr echoed this optimism, especially as smartphones become more affordable. Used thoughtfully, she says, smartphones can help parents build vast electronic educational libraries through apps, e-books, and streaming video. And they can use the devices themselves to get parenting advice and help.
"Smartphones can be really big resources for families who haven't got a lot of other resources," Barr said.
Researchers consistently find that one key to beneficial screen time, especially for young children, is caretaker involvement, particularly a concept called scaffolding, wherein caretakers help a child map what's on the screen to the real world.
The younger the kid, the less her brain will understand abstract ideas, and this seems pointedly so for digital content. So Barr studied screen-based learning in kids with and without a caretaker's involvement — for example, a caregiver saying, "See the cat on the screen? That looks like our cat at home."
Barr found a remarkable difference.
"The baby was 19 times more likely to make the connection and to learn that this thing on the screen had something else that was related out in the real world," she said.
Ultimately, screen time can be perfectly fun and healthy for young kids, especially if it's a way for parents and kids to play together, the experts conclude.
"Consider what is meaningful to your child: What maps onto the real world and the digital world? And consider how you might help them navigate between those two worlds," Barr said. "It's just like any other type of play: You need to be paying attention to what they're learning and what they're figuring out."

While I’m stressing over finals, have some oc content in the form of videos and lore posts because I refuse to be near a computer outside of school until next week. Send an ask if you have questions about any of my ocs that can’t be found on their profiles or if they don’t have a profile yet.
I realized I never made like an actual post talking about Dimitri being possessed and all of his diagnoses. At the age of seven Dimitri was possessed by two spirits, a kitsune and one of his ancestors. At the age of ten he was diagnosed with Multiple Personalities Disorder (MPD, it’s the 80s so the term switch hasn’t happened yet). At the age of 14 Dimitri was bit by a werewolf.
Most of his character development is revolved around coming to terms that he can’t ignore his diagnosis, the fact that he’s a werewolf and the fact that he’s possessed by two dickhead spirits as it is all apart of him. It got pretty hard ignoring them once he realized that he would need Ricardo’s help if he was to take over the family business like his grandparents want him to.
He also had to learn how to control not only the powers he gained from Húlí, the kitsune, but also to learn how to hold back Ricardo, his many times great uncle, from taking his revenge out everyone. Then there’s the trying to figure out how to not randomly turn into a different person when he’s stressed out.
The switches were never noticeable until at least five minutes after they happened because that’s when people realized Dimitri or Damian or Volk (the werewolf) was no longer with them. It became slightly easier when Dimitri mastered his mist flames and they all started reconfiguring the body into their imagine of what they wanted to look like.
There’s six “personalities” as the psychiatrist likes to call them. In reality there’s only three personalities, Dimitri the “main” that’s just regular shmegular Dimitri with all his mental disorders. Depression, anxiety from whenever he’s near Giotto and Angelica (his father and mother), PTSD, the adhd. Faceclaim: Jabari Banks
Tumblr media
Ricardo is the many times great uncle of Dimitri. It’s not really known how Dimitri came to be possessed by Ricardo and you can’t really take the word of a known psychopath. He takes the form of what he looked like before he died, a curly brown haired and blue eyed Italian. Faceclaim: Penn Badgley
Tumblr media
Húlí is a kitsune who had recently “accidentally” got their previous user killed in the forest behind the Vongola mansion. Húlí attached onto the closet powerful being they could so there wouldn’t be another mishap like what had happened with the previous user. He’s not necessarily a vengeful spirit, he just loves to fuck with people and uses his powers to inconvenience others. Faceclaim: Son Woo-Hyun
Tumblr media
Volk is what Rowen started calling Dimitri’s werewolf and it kinda just stuck. Dimitri got bit at the age of 14 while he was wandering around the expansive forest behind the mansion even after he was explicitly told to stop going back there. During the week leading up to the full moon is when Volk decides to be present and he didn’t want to be left out of all the fun of switching Dimitri’s body around. Faceclaim: Tom Welling
Tumblr media
Trigger warning for the reasons behind Damian and Demeter’s alters
Then there’s Damian, he was formed to keep Dimitri from remembering most of his abusive history with Giotto. Damian is who mostly interrupts Dimitri’s life if he feels something could trigger Dimitri. Damian will often forth when Dimitri ever has to interact with Giotto or his mother to shield Dimitri from their abusive tendencies. He tends to take the form of a more Asian looking boy to try and connect more with his Asian side of the family. Faceclaim: Ryan Potter
Tumblr media
Demeter, she was formed after an incident in Russia when she was 8 that she doesn’t like to talk about. She is meant to reflect the childhood Dimitri should’ve had growing up without the threat of his father having a bad day and taking his anger out on him. She takes the form of young Dimitri and her name is where Dimitri derived from. Faceclaim: Mila Davis-Kent

@tabsris most of my KH OCs bios are WIP(except for Neashi but that’s because she’s my oldest OC to date), but they will be updated soon, but in the meantime let’s focus on the basics for the time being.
Project: Pere Noel.
A project financed by Organization XIII's leader Xemnas in hopes of finding suitable replacements of the members who died while stationed in Castle Oblivion, it is led by the currently unidentified "Mr. Pere Noel", rumors suggest that "Mr. Pere Noel" is Xemnas himself due to being the Project's benefactor. Though they are many Outsider Nobodies from different worlds who are chosen for the Project, there are only 5 recruits, with both of the Organization Leader's left and right-handed men among its numbers to closely observe those chosen for the Project.
Now for its members/My OCs:
Dimitri Achilles Future Organization name: Xidirmit(Zai-deer-mit), The Peddler of Avarice Age: 20 Gender: Male Resident: Traverse Town Height: 180cm/6 ft 0 Hair: White Eyes: Emerald Green Rank: Second Dealer Occupation: Provider of Stolen or Illegal Goods. Element: Crystal Weapon: Crossbows
A Playboy from Traverse Town, he serves as the Project's Provider of Stolen and Illegal Goods Codenamed: Second Dealer. Though commended for his talents, he's in line to be kicked out of the Project due to having a string of lovers and operating a black market for a profit against the Organization's wishes. He also has what I like to call the "Don Juan Complex", which he had developed at a very young age due to his parents' divorce, his mother leaving affected him mentally, he began to have affairs with multiple women to fill the emptiness that his mother failed to fill. This mentality carried on for years even after becoming a Nobody, during that time, he uses his affairs to feel the emotions he lost as a Somebody. He is currently being monitored by Xigbar.
