Enjoyed quite a weekend celebrating the amazing @Spelman_College #ClassOf2018 as they marched through the Alumnae Arch & across the stage at Commencement. The stirring & vital messages about #SocialJustice, #Equity, #Racism, #Inclusivity, & #BlackWomen using bringing their authentic selves into spaces & using their voices for positive change from speakers was empowering. These young women were sent out into the world after four years of much care & love & the #SpelmanSisterhood to keep them uplifted. I was so proud last night that my tween was a bit upset because she didn’t get to tell @MHarrisPerry that her favorite amendment is the 15th amendment. Perry asked the audience members to raise their hands and share their favorite amendment. My enterprising 7th grader took a bit too long researching and lost her opportunity, but she had a great conversation with her afterwards. And so did I, particularly when Perry shared her experience raising a tween that needed to spend a lot of time on a college campus and at similar events because that is her mother’s passion & profession. Six years ago (almost to the day), my first grader was surrounded by the brilliance of Black women when professor and then @MSNBC host Perry visited @Spelman_College and engaged with students, former Spelman President Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, Founder and Director of the Spelman College Women's Research & Resource Center Dr. Beverly Guy Sheftall and Professor and Social Justice Scholars Program Director Dr. Cynthia Neal Spence. Now the @WFUniversity Maya Angelou Presidential Chair, Perry was back on campus last night discussing the importance of the 150th anniversary of the #14thAmendment in conversation with the @NAACP's Legal Defense Fund President Sherrilyn Ifill - and my 12-year old was front and center again. The conversation about social justice topics was more relevant to her now, as she's engaged in these discussions at home and in school. Talk about a #ParentingWin! When my young tween artist met @ASherald this week at the opening of “AmySherald” at the @SpelmanMuseum, I was thrilled to pieces. She got to hear all about Amy’s process (painting 12 works annually), how her roots are in the #AtlantaUniversityCenter as an alumna of @CAU1988 who took painting classes at @Spelman_College, & how Amy’s life & career have been impacted since she painted #ForeverFirstLady @MichelleObama’s official portrait. Amy was kind enough to ask my young artist to send her some examples of her work, to which Amber replied, “I’ve got a blog of all my art.” And Amy asked her to send a link. Thank you, Amy, for encouraging my daughter. Your tangible example & authenticity mean the world to her & me. Thrilled to share: #SpelmanCollege English major Bria Paige, C'2019, has been named as a 2017-2018 #FormationScholar and will receive a $25,000 scholarship funded by #Beyonce's Parkwood Entertainment. A Jackson, Mississippi native, Paige is also a 2017 @UNCF Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and plans to pursue a doctorate in English literature and Black feminist scholarship. Her undergraduate research as a Fellow will focus on Black women and their political spaces, using the English discipline as the primary framework for her investigation and analysis. She is currently attending the Mellon Program’s Summer Institute this summer at @EmoryUniversity.
