Canada Introduces Special Visa Program for Remote Workers and Digital Nomads
Canada has taken a significant step towards attracting skilled individuals from around the world by announcing its plans to introduce a special visa program for remote workers. As part of its efforts to position itself as a global leader in tech talent recruitment and attraction, the country has unveiled the Innovation Stream, which will be integrated into Canada's existing International Mobility Program.
The Innovation Stream: Attracting Highly Talented Individuals
The cornerstone of the program is the development of the Innovation Stream, aimed at attracting highly talented individuals from various fields. Canada recognizes the importance of fostering innovation and seeks to create opportunities for the future by filling in-demand jobs. Through this stream, the nation aims to welcome skilled professionals who can contribute to its innovation priorities and high-tech industries.
Embracing the Rise of Digital Nomads
In addition to targeting skilled professionals, Canada also aims to promote itself as an appealing destination for digital nomads. With the rise of remote work, an increasing number of professionals are embracing the digital nomad lifestyle, seeking the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. Canada's visa program recognizes this trend and strives to create an environment that welcomes these adventurous individuals.
Streamlining Work Permits for H-1B Visa Holders and Enhancing Existing Programs
Recognizing the importance of labor mobility in North America, Canada intends to streamline work permits for H-1B visa holders in the United States. This initiative aims to facilitate smoother transitions for skilled professionals already working in North America, further strengthening the region's tech talent ecosystem.
Additionally, the Canadian government plans to enhance existing programs for high-skill tech workers. The Global Skills Strategy and Start-up Visa Program will be improved to ensure a more seamless and efficient process for attracting and retaining top talent in the tech industry.
Addressing Labor Shortages in the Tech Sector
To address labor shortages in the tech sector, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is exploring various options. These include considering employer-specific work permits and open work permits for up to five years. By offering longer periods of stay for non-resident workers, Canada aims to alleviate labor shortages and foster a thriving tech ecosystem.
Looking Ahead: Launching the Visa Program
Canada has set a target to launch the expanded visa program by the end of 2023. This will allow non-resident workers to stay in the country for extended periods, providing them with the stability and support they need to excel in their professional endeavors. The introduction of this program aligns with a global trend, as more than 50 countries have already implemented digital nomad visas or special permits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Canada's initiative showcases its commitment to enhancing its talent base and driving innovation in key industries.
In conclusion, Canada's special visa program for remote workers and digital nomads demonstrates its dedication to attracting top talent from around the world. By creating an environment that fosters innovation, promoting itself as a digital nomad-friendly destination, and streamlining work permits, Canada aims to position itself as a global leader in tech talent recruitment and retention. Through these initiatives, the country is poised to strengthen its talent pool, support its innovation goals, and thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

AVATAR: TLA/LOK universe “sequel AU” concept
AU takes place several avatar cycles after Korra
In the year 2000, the world has undergone a massive transformation and is a far cry from the one known in the days of the Four Nations. The once-divided nations of the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads have united under a single banner, forming [unnamed country], a progressive society that has largely abandoned its ancient traditions. Bending—once revered as an essential skill—is now in a regulatory grey area (regulated; either licensed, suspended, or exiled), seen as irrelevant in the age of technology. The Avatar, once the world's protector, is now nothing more than a forgotten relic of history, their role reduced to a mere tradition. It is a society where the ancient traditions have been abandoned in favor of rapid technological advancement.
When Sozin's Comet unexpectedly returns years ahead of its predicted path, it brings with it a cosmic anomaly that disrupts the natural balance of all four elements. The comet’s influence creates global chaos:
Fire becomes uncontrollable, causing wildfires and spontaneous flames.
Earthquakes rattle cities, weakening infrastructures.
Water floods coastal cities and causes unpredictable tides.
Air storms destroy weather patterns, leading to violent, erratic tempests.
The comet’s arrival also shatters the delicate peace between the coexisting physical world and Spirit World, awakening once-dormant spirits and causing widespread spiritual disturbances.
The Avatar, the latest in the Waterbender line and is no one but just a typical high schooler in every way, is ill-prepared for such a crisis. A world-saving hero that no one expects because they’ve been ignored their whole life. Someone who prefers to have an Algebra test rather than deal with a world-ending crisis. Untrained and inexperienced, they are thrust into a world where bending is forbidden and the Avatar’s spiritual connection is weak. With the balance of the world in jeopardy, the Avatar embarks on a journey to rediscover bending, reconnect with lost traditions, and confront the growing chaos.
(Excerpt from lore written by burymenot)
Note: This is a concept developed by my digital arts class, in collaboration with myself, that we got way too invested in, and so we must release this hyperfixation in public lol
Team Avatar
Tumblr media
Zen, 17 (Avatar from the Water tribe)
He is the incarnation following the unscrupulous air nomad Avatar Khando, widely reviled for being a menace to society. He led a renegade faction of the Freedom Fighters, who were more extremist in their methods. This unflattering reputation further soured the reception towards the next Avatar. (written by clygerdoodles, who is a friend I roped into this AU lol)
Zen is the titular Avatar, master of Four elements & meant to bring balance to the world. He is in his last year of high school, living a typical teenage life in a quiet neighborhood together with his parents and pet (otter-platypus) Shin, content with a life of mediocrity ever since his unceremonious announcement as the Avatar. When called to fulfill his traditional duty, he reluctantly accepts the responsibility, having feelings of doubt bothering him every now and again.
Thrust into a chaotic world that suddenly needs an Avatar after some cycles of indifference, he faces many challenges that questions his principles and world views, hardwired by history and his own upbringing. While he strives hard to exceed the expectations placed upon him despite his unpreparedness, deep down all he wants is to live a normal life like others. (Written by jnzn.art)
Tumblr media
Jia Zhang, 17 (Avatar’s bestfriend)
With one parent being a famous Mover star, and the other being a top socialite, Jia’s parents barely spend time with her and as such, she is spoiled rotten, if only to prevent her from complaining about them on social media and ruining their reputation.
Daughter of extremely wealthy and successful parents, Jia is someone used to getting what she wants. Besides her snobbish personality, she is also loud and catty, which makes most of her classmates dislike her. She has an unbridled obsession with Avatar lore and became notorious for her many product orders from Avatarland, always looking forward when she will receive her next parcel. Born an earthbender, she instead appropriates waterbender customs, all because the current Avatar is from the water tribe.
As the self-appointed bestfriend of the Avatar, she is ever supportive of him and he is one of the few people she acts cordial with. She accompanies Zen on his training journey across the world, oftentimes paying for the group’s expenses with no questions asked. Always feels unappreciated and useless, as her ideas are usually shot down or talked over by others and isn’t assigned in serious roles in the team dynamic. (Written by kuramaru)
Tumblr media
The Twins (Children of current head of the White Lotus)
Kyna, 18 (potentially talented airbender)
Bubbly and down to earth, Kyna is the more approachable one between the twins. Unlike her brother, she prefers to go out with friends and traveling to different Air Temples. At home, she dutifully fulfills her responsibilities in the household, leading her to be considered the “favored child.” Despite that, she has a close relationship with Kai, and loves to pester him, much to his annoyance, but would sometimes help him in his tech endeavors.
Trying to live up to her namesake, she learned airbending at a very young age but has yet to master it. Touted as talented, yet plagued by laziness. She wants to earn her master tattoos yet spends more time reading scrolls or watching documentaries about the art rather than practicing it. When presented with the opportunity by her father to accompany the Avatar on his training journey, she jumps on the chance, relishing on the thought of traveling the world. (Written by Mikay C)
Kai, 18 (tech savvy non-bender)
Kai is someone who is not interested with his Father’s work in the White Lotus nor in his sister’s involvement with Team Avatar. In fact, he aims to graduate from high school and finally pursue a degree in Robotics Engineering. Deeming their duty to the Avatar more important, his father convinced him through bribery, buying him tech he so badly wants just as long as he tags along with the Team. Also, he cares too much about his sister to leave her alone.
His personality consists of him being distant most of the time, always appearing cool and mysterious, but is actually emotionally repressed and easily irritated. He is tech savvy and a self-identified gamer, preferring to shut himself in his room studying robotics and tinkering, or play games the whole day. (Written by KeziartS)
(The students assigned these roles didn’t fulfill some of their requirements, hence the minimal art from them directly 😔)
Tumblr media
Zhihan, 21 (Lost heir to the Fire Nation throne)
She is the heir to the Fire Nation royal family, their lineage difficult to trace when the monarchy collapsed after the relatively short reign of Iroh II. The fact is revealed to her by her Uncle Ikigai, whom she doesn’t have the best relationship with, believing him to be her father’s killer. Ultimately, her ‘princess’ status is something she doesn’t have it in her to really care about.
A college drop-out who opted to be a cast member in Avatarland, a theme park located at an old Fire Nation temple. Along with her cousin Zar, they live in poverty, being overworked and underpaid in their jobs as performers, so they would often stage scams on unsuspecting tourists in order to get by. Self-serving and ignorant to a fault, but not without morals. She mostly comes off as friendly and endearing, and uses that natural charm to commit petty theft or lie her way out of trouble. Never having formal combat training in Firebending, she is at the very least, aware of the basics, and mostly uses it in her performances akin to party tricks.
Somewhat apologetic for causing a rift between two members of Team Avatar, she leads them to her uncle Ikigai, one of the firebending masters listed to help train Zen. Consequently, she is forced to accompany them the rest of the way, acting as the ‘legal guardian’ for Team Avatar, but only after striking an agreement with them that she is to be compensated.
(The character was supposed to be one-off, like the Cabbage guy, but my students kept adding roles and traits to her and since I go along with what they say, she eventually became a fleshed out character I got attached to 😭)
Tumblr media
Enola Baolan, 19 (Book 1 antagonist)
She is branded as the child of traitors, a title she inherited through no fault of her own, but because the United Republic of Nations’ leaders labeled her parents as such, for their groundbreaking invention on technology capable of mimicking bending abilities to a certain extent.
Enlian, who uses “Enola” as an alias, is a non-bender with a troubled past, born in Ba Sing Se to earthbending parents who specialize in metalbending. After her parents were “banished” by the government for their inventions, she is orphaned at a very young age. She lived with many foster families, enduring both kindness and neglect. She worked odd jobs through the years, such as a mechanic at Teo’s workshop and as a courier at Kuruk Express, earning enough wage for modest living conditions.
Once she discovers the truth about her parent’s disappearance, she finds their hidden laboratory, collecting their notes and working prototypes, and vows vengeance against their oppressors. Though she cannot bend, she compensates for it with sheer tenacity and tactical ingenuity, paired with utilizing her parent’s prized invention, the Earth Gauntlets, makes her a force to be reckoned with.
Initially masquerading as a bender of all elements, she acts as the foil to the Avatar. She challenges Zen’s views, who believes himself a beacon of balance, but for Enola, he is the enduring symbol of a flawed system. (Written by burymenot)

—Colter and Nicole’s Relationship: The Backstory
A Relationship Born from Brief Connection, Lasting Years:
* Colter and Nicole's relationship, born out of a spontaneous and passionate connection, evolved over time. Though their bond started intensely, it quickly became clear that they were from two very different worlds—Colter's dangerous, nomadic existence as a reward-seeker and Nicole’s steady, law-abiding life as a cop. The relationship was one of love, but also of tension. Nicole respected Colter’s work but couldn’t reconcile it with her own sense of order and justice. Their time together was punctuated by frequent breakups and reconciliations as Colter struggled to balance his dangerous career with Nicole's need for stability.
Tumblr media
Mutual Separation:
* In the end, they both agreed to part ways—not out of animosity but because they knew their lifestyles were incompatible. Colter wanted a family, but he couldn’t afford to settle down in one place. Nicole, on the other hand, wanted a life that allowed her to stay connected to her work while keeping her child safe. It was a hard decision, but one made out of respect for each other’s futures.
Tumblr media
Nicole's Pregnancy and Colter's Commitment:
* The pregnancy came as a surprise to both of them, especially since they had already agreed to separate. Nicole had initially wanted to raise the child on her own, feeling confident that she could provide a stable life, but Colter, deeply in love with her and now determined to be there for his child, wasn’t having it. Colter knew that his daughter would be something special, and he couldn’t bear the thought of not being part of her life, even if his job kept him on the move. His love for Nicole, though it had been complicated, remained strong.
* Colter pushed back hard against the idea of raising his daughter from a distance. He wasn't about to make the same mistake twice—he wanted to be there for every milestone, even if it meant compromising his own lifestyle. Nicole, while hesitant and wanting to maintain her independence, ultimately agreed, understanding that Colter’s involvement would be crucial.

~~~~~~~~
—Hattie's Early Years: Life with Nicole
Tumblr media
Raised by Nicole, with Occasional Visits from Colter:
* From birth until a young age, Hattie was primarily raised by Nicole. As a single mother, Nicole put in long hours as a cop, working cases and gradually rising through the ranks. While her work was demanding, Nicole made sure to carve out quality time with Hattie—teaching her the value of resilience, discipline, and how to navigate the world with an unwavering sense of justice.
* Colter, always a nomad at heart, took every opportunity to be with his daughter when he could. He wasn’t a constant presence, but the moments he was around were memorable for both of them. He’d take her out for short trips, teach her how to track, or just share stories of the world he lived in, which fascinated Hattie. Even when Colter was on the road, he always made time to FaceTime his “princess,” making sure she knew she was loved and always in his thoughts.
Nicole's Balancing Act:
* While Nicole was deeply invested in her work, she was always careful to shield Hattie from the darker side of her job, just as Colter shielded her from the dangers of his work as a tracker. Nicole taught Hattie that the world was full of both light and dark, but she made sure to raise her with a strong moral compass—something that would be crucial as Hattie grew older and began to understand her father’s world.
* Despite her mother’s best efforts to protect her, Hattie, being sharp and resourceful, began to piece things together. She understood that her father’s life was risky, even if Nicole tried to downplay it. She was a curious, perceptive child who picked up on subtle details—the way her mother’s eyes would darken when Colter’s name was brought up, or the hushed phone conversations when Colter was on the line. It wasn’t long before she began asking tough questions.
— Hattie’s Growing Awareness & Independence
Tumblr media
—|—
By the time Hattie was a teenager, the innocence of her younger years had faded. No longer content to simply be the excited daughter on FaceTime, she began noticing the cracks in her parents' lives. She saw how often Colter was absent, and how Nicole sometimes seemed distant or distracted when his name came up.
As her mind sharpened, Hattie started connecting the dots between her mother’s work as a cop and Colter’s dangerous life as a reward-seeker. She noticed the subtle signs—the way Nicole’s eyes narrowed when discussing certain cases, or the tense conversations they had about Colter’s trips.
Her curiosity grew, and so did her desire to understand the risks and realities of their world. Nicole and Colter, each in their own way, gradually began revealing more. Nicole explained her work in broad strokes, careful not to overwhelm her, but making sure Hattie understood the dangers.
Colter, ever protective, was less open, but Hattie’s sharp mind and resourcefulness—skills honed by growing up in a constantly shifting world—allowed her to put the pieces together. By now, she was no longer just a passive observer; she wanted to be involved.
—|—|—
=====
— The Decision to Join Colter on the Road
At some point, Hattie started to crave more than just stories and FaceTime calls. She wanted to be a part of her father's world. She’d heard enough about his "Tracker Trips" and was fascinated by the idea of traveling with him, seeing the world from his perspective.
No more staying behind or watching from the sidelines—she was ready. She argued that she was old enough, resourceful enough, and capable of handling whatever came her way. It wasn’t just about wanting adventure; it was about understanding her father, his work, and maybe even finding a place for herself in it.
Colter knew his daughter was strong-willed and resourceful, but he also knew how dangerous his world was. His mind screamed to keep her out of this dangerous world, to shield her from the risks that came with his job. But he saw so much of himself in her—the same determination, the same need for independence. As much as he wanted to protect her, he knew she wouldn’t let it go. The more she pushed, the more he realized that, despite his best efforts, Hattie was already part of his world in ways he couldn’t ignore.
Colter had always trusted Nicole's judgment, and this was no different. He brought it up with her, knowing that this would be a hard conversation. Would they let Hattie join him on the road, despite the dangers? After much deliberation, and a long, emotional discussion, they finally came to a decision: depending on the trip, Hattie could come along.
The decision was one of compromise. Colter would still be protective, giving Hattie clear instructions on what she could and couldn’t do on these trips. He’d keep her out of harm’s way whenever possible, ensuring that she stayed in a safe position while he worked. But it would give Hattie the experience she so desperately wanted.
Nicole, always the skeptic, wasn’t thrilled with the decision. She worried endlessly about Hattie’s safety, knowing firsthand the dangers both her job and Colter’s brought. But she also knew that Hattie had grown up in a world where danger was part of the backdrop, and she couldn’t shelter her forever. She gave her reluctant blessing, trusting Colter to keep their daughter safe.
When Hattie heard the decision, she couldn’t hide the smirk of victory. She had won this round, and she made sure her bag was packed, ready to go the moment Colter called.
—Hattie’s First "Tracker Trip" with Colter
Tumblr media
Their first trip together took them to a small town that seemed quiet and safe at first glance—perfect for a missing person case. The kind of town where everyone knew everyone, but secrets lingered in corners, just waiting to be uncovered. Colter had gotten the case from his trusted contact, Teddi, who’d sent over everything she could find. Colter didn’t waste time. As soon as they arrived, he briefed Hattie on the basics.
“Observe, ask questions, stay in the background,” Colter repeated, giving her a stern look. He wanted her to understand how to approach his world. “Got it, sweetie?”
Hattie nodded, though a part of her couldn’t help but smile. She was finally here, right beside him, a step closer to seeing what her dad did for a living. Colter tried to hide his grin. He was happy to have her with him, though he’d never admit it out loud. His princess had grown up so fast.
They started by talking to the locals—quiet conversations in diners, at the general store, and outside the post office. Colter’s way of connecting with people was always smooth. He asked just enough to get the answers he needed, and people seemed to open up to him despite his seemingly cold exterior. Hattie watched, fascinated by how he navigated these small-town dynamics, his calm demeanor allowing him to pull information from people who would have shut down if anyone else had asked.
At one point, Colter got a lead and had to confront a suspect—someone who wasn’t answering questions the right way. He told Hattie to stay put in the van while he handled it.
“Do some research, princess. I’ll be back soon,” he said, already stepping out.
Hattie sat in the van with the laptop, talking to Teddi and Bobby, helping out with anything she could. It wasn’t as thrilling as being out there with her dad, but there was something satisfying about piecing things together herself. She put on some music, typed away, and felt like she was contributing in her own way. For a while, that was enough.
But then the curiosity kicked in. Boredom crept in, and the need to see what was happening outside the van was too strong. Quietly, Hattie grabbed her jacket and slipped out of the van, staying in the shadows as she followed Colter from a distance. She kept low, staying far enough away to remain unseen, but close enough to see the confrontation unfold.
Colter, of course, noticed right away. When the situation was over, and they were back in the van, he gave her a pointed look. Hattie knew she was caught, once she saw his expression.
“Next time, Hattie,” Colter said, his voice low but firm, “You stay put.”
Hattie’s sheepish look dropped, she didn’t argue. She knew she’d pushed it, and now, seeing the seriousness in her father’s eyes, she understood the risk.
“I got it, Dad,” she said, though her voice was tinged with the tiniest bit of defiance. There was a flicker of respect in her eyes, though, for her dad’s ability to see through her. He was always two steps ahead.
====
======
A Few Hours Later...
Tumblr media
As the sun began to set, Colter parked the van in a secluded area, far enough off the main road to keep a low profile. They set up camp—nothing fancy, just a few quick essentials: food, water, and some rest before they continued the next leg of the trip. Colter cooked up some simple burgers on the small camp stove, and Hattie, happy to have a moment to sit back, eagerly dug in.
As they ate, Colter began to talk about the confrontation with the suspect, filling in the details. Hattie listened intently, though part of her mind still buzzed with the things she’d seen earlier. When she turned her attention back to her laptop, she realized that she’d made some progress of her own. Between chatting with Teddi and Bobby, she had managed to dig up a few useful bits of information. Colter noticed her working as he spoke, his eyes catching the focused way she was typing, the small pile of notes beside her.
He paused mid-sentence, a surprised smile tugging at his lips. “Impressive,” he said, the praise slipping out before he could stop it. “I didn’t realize my little princess had such a sharp mind.”
Hattie glanced up, smiling softly. “Thanks. I’ve been working on it before I went out.”
Colter chuckled, then became more serious, his expression softening as he leaned against the van, looking at her with a fatherly tenderness. “I know you’re eager, sweetheart. But you need to understand something.” He wiped his hands on a rag, then looked her in the eye. “There’s a time and a place for getting in the field. And when it’s not that time, your job is here. In the van. Research, staying safe, helping out from a distance. You got it?”
Hattie sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Yeah, yeah, I get it,” she huffed. But her defiance was already waning, replaced by the understanding that this wasn’t just about following her curiosity—it was about the bigger picture, the real stakes behind what they were doing.
She took another bite of her burger, thinking it over. After a pause, she shrugged and looked up at her dad. “I’m just so ready to help, Dad. I want to be out there with you.”
Colter softened, his tone turning gentler. “I know you do, sweetheart. And you will. Just... let me teach you the ropes first. It’ll be a hell of a lot safer that way.”
They ate in a comfortable silence for a moment, the fire crackling nearby. Then Colter cracked a light grin, breaking the tension. “You know, for a first trip, you’re doing pretty damn good.”
Hattie grinned, a charming glint in her eye. “I told you, I can handle it.”
Colter shook his head, laughing. “Yeah, you’re definitely my kid.”
As they finished their meal, the bond between them felt deeper than before. The day had been a mix of tension and learning, but there was also something new—a kind of unspoken understanding between them. It wasn’t just about the work; it was about them, together. Father and daughter. And for the first time, Hattie felt like she really belonged in this world.
1. White Chocolate Chip Cookies – Her ultimate comfort food, sweet and simple. A little indulgence she always keeps in mind for moments when she needs a pick-me-up.
2. Pressed Flower Necklaces – A small but meaningful hobby. Hattie loves collecting wildflowers and turning them into necklaces as a way to capture memories of places and moments.
3. Books with Poems or Short Stories – She enjoys the simplicity of short forms, where emotions and stories can be condensed into just a few pages, especially if they’re thought-provoking or full of beautiful imagery.
4. Painting Her Nails – It’s her way of expressing herself. Whether it’s bright colors or something more subtle, it’s a small act of self-care that makes her feel good.
5. The Color Olive Green – Earthy, calming, and versatile. She’s always loved how it blends into nature and gives her a sense of peace.
6. Meaningful Music – Lyrics that touch her, whether it’s a sad ballad or an anthem of empowerment. Music is something that resonates with her deeply.
7. Singing – Hattie loves to sing, whether she’s belting out in the van during their trips or just humming to herself while working. It’s a way for her to express emotions she might not always put into words.
Hattie’s Dislikes:
1. Snakes – A fear that goes back to a childhood incident. No matter how much she tries to be brave, the sight of one makes her freeze up.
2. Very Tight Spaces – Claustrophobia. She gets an overwhelming sense of panic in cramped spaces and will do anything to avoid them.
— Hobbies & Habits
Tumblr media
Hattie's Habits:
1. Sensitive Skin (Itching) – Hattie has a slight sensitivity to her skin, especially when stressed or nervous. Sometimes she’ll absentmindedly scratch at her arms or neck, which can be a bit uncomfortable. Her dad, Colter, often notices when she's doing it and will gently stop her, reminding her to be mindful of it. It’s one of those little habits that drives him a little crazy, but he doesn’t say much about it.
2. Biting Her Inner Cheek – When Hattie’s deep in thought, concentrating, or frustrated, she tends to bite the inside of her cheek. It’s a nervous habit she’s never really tried to break, and sometimes Colter notices it during tense situations.
3. Staying Up Late to Finish a Movie – Hattie is known to binge-watch shows or movies on Netflix late into the night, even when she knows she should be sleeping. Her mom, Nicole, is often the one to get annoyed by this, as it messes with her routine. Hattie usually justifies it by saying she’s “almost done,” but it’s a habit that doesn’t sit well with her mom.
4. Picking Her Nails – A nervous habit that Hattie’s had for years. She tends to pick at the edges of her nails, especially when she’s anxious or distracted. It’s not something she’s overly self-conscious about, but Colter has caught her doing it more than once and will gently remind her to stop.
5. Making Snarky Comments Under Her Breath – Hattie is quick-witted and often can’t help but make a snarky remark under her breath when something irritates her, especially when people aren’t being straightforward or are being rude. It's one of her more rebellious traits, and while she tries to hold her tongue, it slips out sometimes.
Hattie's Hobbies:
1. Journaling in Her Notebook – Hattie keeps a notebook where she writes down her thoughts, reflections, and sometimes venting about the things that bother her. It's a safe space for her to sort through her emotions or to capture a moment, especially when she's on the road with her dad.
2. Singing Softly in the Van – A quiet way to pass the time while on long trips with Colter. Whether it’s a song she heard on the radio or one that’s been stuck in her head, Hattie hums or sings softly while looking out the window, lost in the rhythm of the road.
3. Doodling in Her Notebook – Another creative outlet. Hattie loves to doodle designs, little sketches, or random thoughts in the margins of her notebook. It's a way for her to unwind and tap into her artistic side when she’s not focused on her more analytical interests.
4. Reading Theories Online About Current Series – Whether it’s a show she’s currently binge-watching or one she’s obsessed with, Hattie loves digging into fan theories and speculations online. She gets lost in the details and enjoys the thrill of discovering new insights into the shows and characters she follows.
5. Making Playlists – Hattie is very particular about the music she listens to. She loves creating playlists for different moods or for specific moments, whether it’s a playlist for a long trip with her dad or one for a rainy day. Music is an important part of her life, and curating playlists helps her express how she’s feeling.
Friends with Big Guy who ended up as his Body guard for a while since he made enemies rather quickly.
Big Guy - Solo - Used to roll with with the Maelstroms but soon Cyberpsychosis started coming on and after a close call, he got surgery, went through therapy, he's still dealing with it but is getting better, he left the Maelstroms behind and became a Solo, he stopped using most Cyberware (except his eyes) due to the toll it took on him mentally.
Jinx- Netrunner - Was a Nomad and ran with the Aldecaldos but came to Night City looking for work. first post!! I’ll be posting alien species from my story, The Space Nomads :) first up: The Camelbacks!
Tumblr media
Nicknamed by humans for their large, sailed back resembling a camel, The Camelbacks are a species of quadrupedal sophonts who communicate through a series of signed language from their upper limbs and vocal cues from sacs in their chest and on their nose + within their mouth. Their “split-hoof” feet create the illusion of claws, sort of standing on the “toe” of the foot. Their hooked claw on either side of their foot resembles an iguanodon, but they mostly use it for harvesting, if anything. They have three eyes, one in the center of their face and two on either side, giving them a wide range of sight that allows them to see practically all sides of themselves. They can focus their eyesight to their center eye to give them a more focused, pin-point view when hunting or communicating.
Camelbacks are opportunistic omnivores, eating whatever is easiest on their nomadic travels. They have mainly flat teeth for chewing, but four large canine “tusks” particularly used for scraping bark off “trees” or pulling cacti. They may still use their tusks to bite down or hunt, but with the use of tools and weapons they are mostly dumbed down as intimidation tactics or fighting tools. Other sophonts, however, are unaware of this, and it is a common stereotype/myth that Camelbacks are overtly aggressive and blood-lusting.
Communication within Camelbacks follows mostly the same principals as modern ASL, but instead of a “time-topic-comment” structure, they mostly go for a “topic-comment-time” or “topic-time-comment”. They also utilize vocal cues for their communication, replacing NMS as Camelbacks do not have a wide enough range of facial expression to dictate it in their signing. For actual deaf Camelbacks, they may feel the chest or face of the Camelback they are speaking with in order to understand. There’s also less of a push for “formal”’ signing, as most communication happens within a nomadic family unit, and rarely happens outside of it. Units may have their own dialect or “accent”, which becomes much more apparent when in contact with other units or at worst, The Capitol members.
Their “hands”, perched right above their front legs on a long arm, have ten digits each and are used for a variety of uses, most notably communication. They have four “claw-fingers”, with two “claw-thumbs” that allow them to maneuver their hands and speak. Their wrists have a wide range of rotation, able to move it with slightly more rotation both ways than humans do. Humans sometimes call them “double-hands”, for the resemblance of two hands glued together.
In terms of sound, Camelbacks create deep, low grumbles or bellows within their chest, sucking air within their nose to fill their vocal-sacs and push it out through the holes/nostrils on their chest. This is also the case with the sac on the nose, but instead of deep groans the sound produced there tends to be more high-pitched and nasally. These sounds are usually used both within their language (dictating urgency, time or large emotions), but higher pitched “barks” and “screams” are common outside of formed language. Laughs are often confused for cries with sophonts outside of their own species, taking on a high pitched voice mixed with a lack of true eyebrows. Translating these sounds and signs into a written language is challenging, and it takes a skilled linguist to understand and interpret for other sophonts. While some Camelbacks have developed a written language, most notably scientists and linguists from The Capitol, wide-use of one is not common.
Most Camelbacks follow a widespread, planet based religion. Their belief is that the planet is to be worshipped, and that in order to truly explore it and honor her (the planet is sometimes referred to as Mother) name, they must stick to a nomadic lifestyle and travel the planet throughout the year, only stopping for the smaller breeding season and holidays (most of which honor the planet). They travel in large groups, ranging from extended and direct family members to nomads picked up along the way / families within the group (mostly common in the biggest travel-groups, like the Rising Sun tribe and others). These groups have an intense focus on nature, respecting the paths they travel and stopping in specific points to leave their marks. A common favorite is The Mothers Palm, a large flat rock covered in paints from hundreds of units past. Every tribe who travels that route leaves a mark, whether it be their name, their hand-print, or simply a swipe of paint.
While the religion is incredibly nature oriented, and outwardly seems positive, internally it is very aggressive towards its own members. There is a strict focus on conservative clothing, draping cloth and woven items over their back crests and around their eyes / nose, and each religious member has a very strict set of rules they follow. Blessings are a given for every thing they do, and if you succeed at anything it is not your own success, but instead the success of the planet for creating you. Some religious tribes even take on deep vows to their planet, such as tribes who refuse to hunt any form of meat, or those who take on vows of silence to not disturb Their Mother. This structure has lead towards many Camelbacks flaking from the religion, and traveling to The Capitol.
The Capitol acts as the one true city in the species, stationed in the place where tribes travel to when breeding season (the end of the traveling season) occurs. However, most religious nomads despise it, as it does not follow the nomadic way of life, and directly opposes their own beliefs with the contribution of Science to the species. Most who do not stick with the religion go into a science or research based field, moving to the Capitol to stay long term and not continue in the nomadic way of life. It is where most tools are developed, especially those related to space travel or extensive-study fields, but most nomads reject this way of life and consider it sinful towards their own planet, as they believe using the Mother’s gifts and changing them opposes her own wants and needs. There are lots of other conflicted feelings about the Capitol, but the most common one is Breeding Season- in the breeding season, nomads station in large tents around the Capitol, and it’s the only time of year where they’ll willingly communicate with them- they’re trade, stock up on food and seeds for the journey ahead, and interact with members that may have flaked. They also pick up new ones, but once the season ends, they pack up and leave like nothing ever occurred.
If you’ve gotten this far, thank you for reading! I’ve got a lot more thoughts about these guys, so I appreciate any input and your thoughts! I’ll be posting more about them, hopefully, and if you have any questions or comments the ask box is always open!
9 and 28 and 29 please!
9 - What's your favorite set of tags/comments you received this year?
Frankly, I love all of comments and tags, I read it again from time to time. It's a big emotional support!
But if I have to pick, it'll probably be comments for the first of "Air nomads in love". It's my first (the only) AU series and I love the reactions.
Especially that one by @likealittleheartbeat:
Tumblr media
28 - Did you learn anything about your art/process/style this year?
I learned a few things about working with scans. It still needs improvement but I like to think that my traditional art looks good on your screens. Yes, I still have problems with light colors and was twice said that I'm doing dark-skinned characters poorly... Well, I'll try to fix it, I swear.
Also I learned about connecting layers, which helps a lot with coloring and light on digital drawings.
As for my style – it seems I really like elongated compositions. Hope you like it too :)
Update: also my style is kinda decorative and I love and hate it both at the same time.
29 - What are you excited for next year when it comes to your art?
Oh, I have a bunch of plans!
First, to learn: anatomy, watercolor, animals, storyboardings, digital drawing.
Second: lots of ideas and wips, both Avatar-related and not. I'm going to try a few new techniques and present to you more headcanons.
Third: NSFW (yeah...). It's a big step for me, because I am not sure about my art skills, but still. @zukkathirst, here I come :)
Thank you very much, for all your questions and for the whole ask!
idk if you've been asked this at any point before, but as someone who lives in the uk and plans to move to japan
what was your experience moving to japan from the uk like and do you have any "dos and don'ts" that you recommend?
The first thing you'll need to look into is acquiring a Visa, since it's mandatory for anyone who plans to stay in Japan for over 90 days. There are multiple different kinds of Visa (such as student Visa, working Visa, expat/digital nomad Visa, etc) so the best option will depend on your personal circumstances.
You can apply for Visas at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in London. They can also help you with any questions you have, walk you through the application process, and they have a library available as well with a lot of resources. You can also submit your application to them online if you aren't able to go in person.
Here's a good guide for the different types of Visas and what the application process looks like.
Overall I found the whole experience to be relatively smooth, with the biggest obstacles being the long wait times (patience is a virtue for sure) and the tedium of having to fill out so many legal forms. You'll need to provide a lot of info regarding your past work experience, proof that you have a clean criminal record, etc. And depending on which type of Visa you apply for, you might need to pass a Japanese language test to affirm that you have the necessary language skills (although this is usually only a requirement if you will be working at a Japanese company)
If you're looking for residential housing in Japan, AkiyaMart is a service that specialises in helping foreigners find homes throughout the country. They will be the middleman who handles the go-between for you and the Japanese real estate agents, and assist you with all the important details/contracts. This is EXTREMELY helpful, especially if you don't speak or read Japanese.
As for general "Dos and Don'ts".....if you haven't visited Japan before, you definitely should travel there at least once. Even if it's just in major urban areas and big cities like Tokyo, it will still be extremely beneficial if only to help you know what to expect.
Reloadable Suica cards are (imho) the best option for transit. And believe me, you'll be using trains a LOT
You definitely don't need to be 100% fluent in Japanese (unless you're applying for a Visa that specifically requires it) but you should definitely try to memorize at least a few common/key phrases.
In general, just try to be polite and respectful. There's a very sharp difference in culture between the UK and Japan, so familiarise yourself with common Japan courtesies.
It can be intimidating when you look at it all at once like this, but I promise it's a lot more manageable than it looks!
V was born into the Bekker Clan, one of many families living off the grid, far removed from the corporate-controlled world that dominated the rest of society. Life among the Bekkers was one of freedom, but every day meant fighting for survival on the unforgiving roads of the Badlands. Scavenging, fixing up old tech, and taking on odd jobs from fixers were all part of the daily grind. V became a jack-of-all-trades—mechanic, driver, survivalist—shaped by the lessons of his upbringing.
His father, a well-respected mechanic and driver within the clan, taught him everything he knew about engines, cars, and the art of survival. Long evenings under the hood of a busted engine turned into a kind of bonding between them, with V learning how to keep old vehicles running long past their prime. His father drilled into him the importance of sticking together, always looking out for family, and never trusting anyone from the "outside," especially corpos. To the Bekkers, those who lived within city walls were just puppets on strings held by the megacorps.
The desert was both a harsh teacher and a liberating playground. V learned to navigate the shifting dunes and treacherous terrain, driving fast and hard to outpace the dangers that lurked around every corner. The most vivid memory of his youth was the first time he raced his bike through the hills, feeling the wind whip through his hair and the sun setting the sky ablaze behind him. The world seemed endless, and the future felt like it was his for the taking.
But that freedom was fragile. When V was a teenager, tragedy struck—his father was killed during a raid. It was a sudden, brutal loss that left a gaping void in his life. V had to grow up quickly, learning to shoulder the responsibilities that had once belonged to his father. The clan mourned, but the Badlands showed no mercy; there was no time to dwell on grief. V buried his sorrow deep, focusing on keeping his father's legacy alive, repairing vehicles, and protecting his clan.
The next major attack came a few years later. The Raffen Shiv, a ruthless band of nomad outcasts, descended upon the Bekker camp with a ferocity that left no room for mercy. V, only 16 at the time, was thrust into the chaos. He picked up a rifle and fought alongside the clan, the sound of gunfire tearing through the night. In the heat of the battle, he took a life for the first time—a Raffen Shiv member who’d come too close. The act of pulling the trigger left his hands shaking, but there was no time for regret or hesitation. That night changed him, carving a new hardness into his soul. The carefree days of racing bikes and tinkering with engines were over, replaced by a deeper understanding of the brutal realities of life in the Badlands.
After the attack, V became more than just a driver or a mechanic—he became a protector, willing to do whatever it took to keep his clan safe. His skills expanded as he learned from the clan's netrunner, picking up quickhacking techniques that allowed him to manipulate tech as easily as he fixed engines. It fascinated him, the way the digital and physical worlds could intersect, and he spent late nights experimenting with hacking old systems and salvaged data.
Yet as V grew older, the clan’s once-comforting closeness started to feel like a cage. The Bekkers’ strict traditions, their wariness of outsiders, and their focus on survival left little room for V’s growing ambitions. He longed to see what lay beyond the horizon, to experience the city lights and the rush of the unknown. V began to question whether his place was truly with the clan, or if he was meant for something more.
V's restlessness was further fueled by a short but intense romance with another nomad from the clan, a fellow wanderer who shared his love for speed and freedom. Together, they’d race through the desert, dreaming of a future beyond the Bekkers' territory. But that dream shattered when his boyfriend was killed during a risky smuggling job gone wrong. V was left devastated, the loss cutting deeper than any wound. The pain drove him to make the decision he’d been wrestling with for months.
With his father gone, his lover lost, and the clan feeling like a shadow of its former self, V decided it was time to leave. He packed his meager belongings into a rickety old vehicle he’d modified himself—one of the last projects he and his father had worked on together—and headed for Night City, the infamous metropolis that loomed on the edge of the Bekkers’ world.
V’s departure wasn’t easy. The Bekkers saw it as a betrayal, a rejection of the life they had built. He parted ways with old friends and family, knowing that he might never see them again. But the call of the city was too strong, promising a new kind of freedom, a chance to prove himself on a bigger stage.
Arriving in Night City, V found himself a stranger in a world where the rules of survival had changed. He quickly realized that the city’s streets were just as dangerous as the desert, but in different ways—here, enemies wore suits, and deals were brokered in the shadows of skyscrapers. But V adapted, using the skills he’d learned in the Badlands to make a name for himself as a mercenary, taking on gigs that required both muscle and finesse.
The city was a place where he could reinvent himself, shedding the scars of his past for a chance at something more. He missed the camaraderie of the Bekkers, the simplicity of life among his own, but he was drawn to the thrill of the unknown, the promise of power that came with surviving the urban jungle. V's love for driving remained a core part of him—he found solace in the roar of engines echoing through Night City’s alleyways, in the freedom that came with pushing a car to its limits on the empty streets in the dead of night.
Yet, even in the city, the ghosts of his past followed him. He carried the lessons of the Bekkers, the memories of his father’s teachings, and the scars left by the loss of those he’d loved. He kept a weathered photo of his father and an old guitar string from the days when he’d played by the campfire, small reminders of where he’d come from. Sometimes, after a job went sideways or the city’s shadows felt too deep, he’d find himself staring out at the distant glow of the city’s skyline, wondering what had become of the Bekkers.
V became known as a skilled driver and reliable gun-for-hire, earning a reputation for taking on jobs that others wouldn’t touch. His blend of nomad skills and urban adaptability made him a valuable asset, and fixers across the city started to take notice. But despite the rush of adrenaline and the thrill of new opportunities, V couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still searching for something—some part of himself that he had left behind on those dusty trails in the Badlands.
