Free Black History, Palestine, Socialism (and other) books on Haymarket
So, HaymarketBooks is a cool online bookstore that, while it does sell physical and digital books, it also offers a lot of free ebooks on subjects it thinks the public should be aware of.
Two categories I know of are Black History, after some racist law in the US that banned Black History resources
And Palestine, what with government media giving a super biased view of unfortunately
It’s in moments like these that we must turn to independent media and resource providers to educate ourselves on topics the government or other people don’t want us to learn about.
Now, here are all of Haymarket’s books they are offering for free, since their website doesn’t have a filter or sort by price option.
Here they are, 17 in total, as per 2nd Feb 2024 :)
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions by Omar Barghouti, 320 pages
1989, The Number by Kevin Coval and Nate Marshall, 23 pages

Another Black woman has made history. Dr. Kenvi Phillips is the director of the Barack Obama Presidential Library, the first of its kind to be fully digital.
According to People Of Color In Tech (POCIT), Phillips began her inaugural role on June 16, putting her in charge of all the programs and activities at the library—virtually, of course. As the Obama Foundation decided not to construct a physical building to host the traditional establishment, its records, with approximately 95% already made digitally, are now being kept in this virtual forum.
While this innovative project is new, Phillips’ career is rich with its own history. The two-time Howard University graduate is no novice in library and archival management.
Not only has she served as the director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at Brown University Library, but Phillips has also devoted her time and leadership to her alma mater’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. The center hosts the largest amount of resources and documents on the global Black diaspora.
With over two decades of experience, Phillips is a beacon of representation and proficiency for this groundbreaking role. Archivist of the United States, Dr. Colleen Shogan, shared her excitement about the appointment in a press release.
“I am excited Dr. Phillips is joining the National Archives as the Director of the Barack Obama Presidential Library. With her extensive experience in libraries and archives and her passion for public history, she will be an excellent steward for our archival and artifact collections and public engagement work,” said Shogan in May. “As the Director of the first digital presidential library in our system, Kenvi will help shape a new course for how we think about access to, and engagement with, the stories and decisions that helped shape our nation.”
The Obama Foundation CEO Valeria Jarrett also emphasized Phillips’ storied history in archiving materials.
“Her strong experience in archives and collections will help make the digitized records a great asset that will be available to everyone, everywhere, including historians, researchers, educators, and students,” explained Jarrett. “We look forward to continuing to work with the National Archives as they provide access to these historic records, and we look forward to displaying artifacts from the Obama Presidential Library in the Foundation’s Obama Presidential Museum, which we will open on the South Side of Chicago in Spring 2026.”
While making history herself, Phillips will offer her leadership and expertise to promote Obama’s legacy through these collections.

Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment Announces The Wizard of Oz 85th Anniversary Theater Edition 4K UHD, includes recreated collectible memorabilia
#PreOrder Wizard of Oz - 85th Anniversary Theater Edition Steelbook Giftset (4K Ultra HD + Digital) https://amzn.to/3AwKO8v
1939’s acclaimed and beloved classic The Wizard of Oz will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as an 85th Anniversary Theater Edition on November 5. Directed by Victor Fleming (Gone With the Wind) and starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, The Wizard of Oz is widely considered to be one of the most influential films in cinematic history.
The 85th Anniversary Theater Edition includes a 4K UHD disc of the film, a Blu-ray disc of the film and a digital code, along with commemorative steelbook packaging, a reproduction of the original program, a reproduction of the film’s premiere invitation, reproductions of 8 original lobby cards, reproductions of 2 original poster cards, and a reproduction of the film’s original movie ticket.
Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s timeless children’s tale about a Kansas girl’s journey over the rainbow, The Wizard of Oz officially premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theater on August 15, 1939. The film was directed by Victor Fleming (who that same year directed Gone With the Wind), produced by Mervyn LeRoy, and scored by Herbert Stothart, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Ray Bolger appeared as the Scarecrow; Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Woodman. Frank Morgan was seen in six different roles, including that of the "wonderful Wizard" himself. Dorothy was portrayed by a 4'11" sixteen-year-old girl who quickly earned her reputation as “the world’s greatest entertainer”-- the incomparable Judy Garland.
The Wizard of Oz received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and captured two Oscars -- Best Song (“Over the Rainbow”) and Best Original Score -- plus a special award for Outstanding Juvenile Performance by Judy Garland. The film was an overwhelmingly popular and critical success upon its initial release and repeated its ability to captivate audiences when MGM reissued the film in 1949 and 1955.
Released to wide acclaim and recognition, and with a long-lasting legacy in the film world, The Wizard of Oz owns a place in multiple AFI lists, including: 100 Years… 100 Movies (#6); 100 Years… 100 Thrills (#43); 100 Years… 100 Heroes and Villains (#4); 100 Years… 100 Songs (#1); 100 Years… 100 Movie Quotes (#4); and Greatest Movie Musicals (#3).
In 1989 The Wizard of Oz was part of the inaugural group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.
The 2017 remaster used an 8K 16bit scan of the original Technicolor camera negative which became the basis for the 4K UHD scan. The process was overseen by MPI colorist Janet Wilson, who oversaw every remaster of The Wizard of Oz for the past 20 years.
The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of The Wizard of Oz will feature Dolby VisionTM HDR that dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen — frame by frame.
Also, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc of The Wizard of Oz will feature a Dolby Atmos soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar. Complete Guide to UFO 50 Release Date and Gameplay
UFO 50 Release date
On September 18, 2024, UFO 50, a colourful compilation of 50 single-player and multiplayer games, crashed or, more accurately, neatly descended atop Steam. UFO 50, created by the same team that brought you Spelunky and Downwell, promises a wealth of gaming experiences for players of all kinds. This article explores the origins, design philosophy, and variety of worlds offered by this unique collection of games, delving deep into it.
Idea and Impacts: A Tributary to the Past with a Contemporary Aspect
The makers of UFO 50 wanted to recapture the magic of 8- and 16-bit games. This collection would integrate new gaming concepts with modern design while evoking nostalgia. The NES and SNES libraries served as a source of inspiration, and developers Derek Yu (Spelunky) and Eirik Suhrke (Downwell) contributed their unique styles to the games.
50 Unusual Occasions: A Variety Buffet
This is no standard collection of mini-games, this is UFO 50. With unique gaming elements, captivating endings, and opening sequences, each of the 50 games offers a complete experience. The collection is remarkably diverse, including genres such as:
Platformers
Take on difficult levels, get past barriers, and become proficient with the tight controls in vintage platforming games.
Shoot ’em Ups
Use various weapons and power-ups to vanquish opponents in these arcade shooters.
Puzzle Games
Creative puzzles will strengthen your logic and problem-solving skills.
Roguelites
Take on dangerous expeditions into randomly generated dungeons, where death is a continuous concern but also presents new opportunities for rewards and challenges with every run.
RPGs
Create your own character, investigate fascinating settings, and take part in titanic battles in short RPG experiences.
There is something in UFO 50 for everyone thanks to its diverse range of genres. A shoot up game is perfect for players looking for a quick adrenaline rush, while a mind-bending puzzle is best for people who prefer cerebral difficulties.
Beyond the Pixels: Collaboration and Art Style
The designers have painstakingly created a pixel art aesthetic that honours the heyday of video game design. Even while the images are definitely outdated, they also have a certain charm and vitality. Every game has a distinct aesthetic style, which highlights the diversity in the set.
Another important component of UFO 50 is collaboration. Mossmouth put together a group of gifted independent developers who each brought their unique perspectives and areas of expertise to the project. The collection that emerges from this collaborative effort is full with unique artistic styles and a wide range of ideas.
An Inaugural Celebration of Independent Spirit
UFO 50 is proof of the inventiveness and enthusiasm of the indie game developer community. In addition to celebrating the distinct character of independent games, the collection creates a sense of community by providing a venue for different developers to display their skills.
Towards the Future: A Prospective Collection
UFO 50 has drawn praise from both reviewers and gamers for its wide range of experiences and dedication to vintage style. The creators have indicated interest in eventually releasing the collection on consoles, even if the first release is concentrated on the PC via Steam. The collection’s lifetime is further increased by the possibility of more content, whether in the form of digital expansions or post-launch upgrades.
The Final Opinion: Indie Fans Should Not Miss This
More than just a compilation of games, UFO 50 is a celebration of independent creativity and a love letter to the heyday of gaming. UFO 50 offers hours of fun for both casual and die-hard players with its varied options, endearing visuals, and collaborative atmosphere. UFO 50 has a wealth of adventures just waiting to be found, regardless of your level of familiarity with independent gaming.
Critical praise and cult classic status
The goal of making 50 different retro games and the experience of the developers participating may result in positive evaluations and a devoted following. Retro fans may love UFO 50 as a treasured title and as a surprising smash.
Speedrunning and modding communities
Players attempting to beat one other’s times may develop a thriving speedrunning community thanks to the game bite-sized size and variety. Furthermore, people who produce new material for the game through modding may emerge as a result of the open nature of the production process.
Remakes and sequels
Should UFO 50 prove to be a commercial success, there may be plans to recreate some of the collection’s best-loved titles for more contemporary platforms. Additionally, it’s possible that UFO 50’s foundation will be expanded upon in sequels, which would provide an additional selection of unique retro-inspired games.
Educational tool
UFO 50 might be a fun teaching tool for history the game design because of its broad range of genres and retro look. Students could use it to demonstrate how game mechanics and genres have changed throughout time.

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital music production, FL Studio Mobile stands out as a versatile and powerful tool for musicians and producers on the go. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or an aspiring artist, this mobile DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) offers a range of features to help you create, edit, and produce music directly from your smartphone or tablet. While the latest versions bring cutting-edge updates, there's a particular charm and functionality in exploring the old versions of FL Studio Mobile. In this blog, we will delve into the fascinating world of FL Studio Mobile's old versions, their features, and why they still hold value for many users.
The Evolution of FL Studio Mobile
FL Studio, originally known as FruityLoops, has a long-standing reputation in the music production industry. When Image-Line, the company behind FL Studio, decided to bring their powerful DAW to mobile devices, it was a game-changer. The first version of FL Studio Mobile was released in 2011, marking a significant step in mobile music production. Over the years, FL Studio Mobile has undergone numerous updates and changes, each bringing new features, improved functionality, and a better user experience.
Why Use an Older Version?
While the latest versions of FL Studio Mobile come packed with advanced features, there are several reasons why someone might prefer using an older version:
Device Compatibility: Older versions of FL Studio Mobile are often more compatible with older devices. If you have an older smartphone or tablet, running the latest version of the app might not be feasible due to hardware limitations.
Simplicity and Ease of Use: As software evolves, it can become more complex. Some users prefer the simplicity and straightforwardness of earlier versions, which can be easier to navigate and use for basic music production tasks.
Nostalgia: For long-time users of FL Studio, older versions can hold nostalgic value. Using an older version can bring back memories of their early days of music production.
Specific Features: In some cases, specific features or workflows available in older versions might have been changed or removed in newer updates. Users accustomed to these features might prefer sticking with an older version that supports their preferred way of working.
Notable Features of FL Studio Mobile's Older Versions
FL Studio Mobile 1.0
The inaugural version of FL Studio Mobile, released in 2011, set the stage for mobile music production. Key features included:
16-track Sequencer: Allowing users to create complex compositions with multiple layers.
Piano Roll Editor: Providing a graphical representation of musical notes, making it easy to create melodies and harmonies.
Step Sequencer: Perfect for creating drum patterns and rhythmic sequences.
Sample Library: A collection of high-quality samples and instruments to kickstart your music-making process.
FL Studio Mobile 2.0
With the release of FL Studio Mobile 2.0, several improvements and new features were introduced:
Expanded Track Count: The number of tracks was increased, allowing for more intricate compositions.
MIDI Support: Users could now connect MIDI devices to their mobile devices, providing greater flexibility in music creation.
Improved UI: The user interface was refined to enhance usability and workflow.
New Effects: Additional audio effects were added, including reverb, delay, and EQ, giving users more tools to shape their sound.
FL Studio Mobile 3.0
The transition to FL Studio Mobile 3.0 brought a significant overhaul, aligning more closely with the desktop version of FL Studio:
Completely Redesigned Interface: The UI was revamped for a more modern and intuitive experience.
Audio Recording: Users could now record audio directly into the app, opening up new possibilities for incorporating vocals and live instruments.
In-App Purchases: A new store was introduced for purchasing additional instruments, effects, and sample packs.
Cross-Platform Compatibility: Projects could be seamlessly transferred between the mobile and desktop versions of FL Studio, facilitating a smoother workflow for users who work across multiple devices.
Downloading and Installing Old Versions
If you're interested in exploring or using an older version of FL Studio Mobile, here are some steps to safely download and install it:
Find a Trusted Source: Websites like APKMirror and APKPure are known for providing legitimate APK files. Always ensure you download from reputable sources to avoid malware.
Enable Installation from Unknown Sources: On your Android device, go to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources, and enable this option to allow the installation of apps from third-party sources.
Backup Your Data: Before installing any APK, it’s a good practice to back up your device’s data. This ensures that you can restore your device if something goes wrong during the installation process.
Download and Install the APK: Once you have the APK file, simply open it on your device and follow the prompts to install the app.
Disable Unknown Sources: After installation, it’s recommended to disable the option for installing from unknown sources to keep your device secure.
The Community and Support
One of the great things about FL Studio Mobile is its vibrant and active user community. Whether you're using the latest version or an older one, you can find a wealth of resources, tutorials, and support from fellow users. Online forums, YouTube channels, and social media groups are excellent places to share tips, ask questions, and get inspiration for your music projects.
Conclusion
FL Studio Mobile has come a long way since its initial release, continually evolving to meet the needs of modern music producers. While the latest versions offer a host of advanced features and improvements, there’s undeniable value in the older versions of the app. Whether you’re drawn to the simplicity, specific features, or compatibility with older devices, exploring the old versions of FL Studio Mobile can be a rewarding experience. By understanding the evolution of this powerful mobile DAW, you can appreciate its journey and perhaps find the perfect version that suits your creative workflow. So, dust off that old smartphone or tablet, dive into the archives, and rediscover the magic of FL Studio Mobile’s earlier days.
