Xeikon’s new PX3300HD high res label press at drupa24 – Hall 11/A01

Lier, Belgium, 30 April 2024 – Xeikon has announced details of the next evolution Panther inkjet technology as it prepares for the world premiere of the Xeikon PX3300HD, a new 1200 dpi digital press to be launched at drupa 2024. Developed for high quality labels, the 5-color machine offers a 330 mm printing width and speeds up to 70 meters a minute, even when printing with high opacity white. It utilizes a newly developed ink series, PX-Cure LED HD, to ensure good curing, while supporting sustainability targets for converters.

“As inkjet technology continues to mature, there’s a clear need to update Xeikon’s Panther portfolio with a higher resolution option to meet specific customer requests. Consequently, we’re now introducing a 1200 dpi engine to complement the existing 600 dpi product range,” states Jeroen Van Bauwel, director Solution Design. “The new Xeikon PX3300HD will extend the capabilities for printers by giving them the tools to reach excellent quality at even higher productivity levels in a TCO-friendly way.”

According to the company, the new digital press produces high durability, full-color labels for diverse markets, covering up to 88% of Pantone colors within Delta E2 (rising to 94% within Delta E 3). To meet the specific requirements of the higher resolution engine, Xeikon has developed new PX-Cure LED HD inks. The new inks match the sustainability benefits of the recently introduced PantherCure UV LED series for Xeikon 600-dpi inkjet presses, including significant savings in energy consumption, instant warm up for more agile operation, and 10 times longer lamp life compared to traditional UV arc lamps, resulting in lower waste.

The new press leverages Xerox W-Series industrial inkjet printheads with dedicated waveforms and screening software developed by Xeikon. Furthermore, the PX3300HD is fully prepared for hybrid printing with the option to add Xeikon’s modular inline label converting units and a large unwinder for longer uninterrupted production runs.

Van Bauwel concludes, “This extension of Xeikon’s inkjet capabilities is an incredibly exciting development for customers. It offers them a very cost-effective and highly competitive opportunity to scale their businesses, so they can supply profitable luxury market segments with exceptional productivity and quality. We are currently well underway with customer trials and will start sales at drupa. Our take –

In a web press conference on the evening of 29 April 2024 we had an opportunity to question Xeikon about the cost of dry toner consumables of digital presses. When these were introduced more than 30 years ago the promise of some of the manufacturers was that the toner cost would rapidly go down as consumption volumes increased. One of the Xeikon speakers at the press conference responded by saying, “More than three decades old, this is certainly a mature technology. And yes, both the capital cost and the cost of consumables should have come down.”

Our view is that digital production printing continues to face the ‘Innovator's Dilemma’ in that it has taken a very long time for much of it to deliver quality at a reasonable cost with reliability. While the drum and toner presses at lower capital costs have worked well in markets like India this is because they have delivered quality for newly invented markets such as photo books and the consumable costs have remained reasonable – their quality has evolved while the price or click charge has remained the same despite continuous inflation over the past three decades.

Many of the paradigms offered in the early days of digital printing such as transactional printing have not been very successful in markets such as India. For various reasons this segment has occupied a specialized niche. The evolution of digital printing into inkjet has also faced the dilemma of high capital cost and consumables. Although to some extent alleviated by Asian and Indian manufacturers of inkjet presses, the inkjet presses from the major global manufacturers continue in the main to be unable to answer the question: “Is it cheaper, better or faster?”

Fujifilm's print technologies at drupa 2024

Fujifilm Group recently announced its presence at drupa 2024, from 28 May – 7 June in Dusseldorf, Germany (Hall 8b / A02). At the first iteration of the show in eight years, Fujifilm is set to showcase a range of print technologies – from analog to digital; toner to inkjet, through to printheads, inks and software this year at Fujifilm’s biggest-ever drupa stand covering 2,420 square meters.

Fujifilm will showcase its Jet Press 750S, highly known for more than a decade for its print quality, achieved through inkjet technology. The Jet Press series has been acclaimed for its high image quality that surpasses offset printing, with over 300 installations worldwide, the company claimed in a release.

Another B2 digital press, the Revoria Press GC12500, which uses dry toner for paper versatility and high usability, will also be showcased. The Revoria Press GC12500 is said to be the world’s first printer to expand the maximum paper size to B2XL size (750 × 662mm), allowing up to 6-up A4 posters and large format applications.

Apart from the B2 digital presses, the Jet Press 1160CFG, a full-color high-speed continuous feed inkjet printing system for the commercial printing market, will be exhibited for the first time. By adopting a newly developed water-based pigment ink, the new press can print beautifully on both coated and uncoated paper, the company said.

Moreover, two new mid-range production printers will also be unveiled for the first time. This new press is modeled on the Revoria Press PC1120, with its specialty colors and massive application range. The Revoria Press PC1120 has received wide market recognition, such as winning the “Buyers Lab (BLI) 2022 PRO Award” in the high-volume CMYK+ device category, from Keypoint Intelligence.

New process-less plates for offset printing and DX solutions for automation and streamlining with workflow software, will also feature, in addition to demonstrations of Fujifilm photographic products at the company's stand, the press release said. The inclusion of third-party finishing equipment will showcase the huge variety of applications possible with Fujifilm technology.

The recently released Jet Press FP790, a water-based inkjet digital press, which brings innovation to the flexible packaging printing process, and new automation options for its hybrid wide-format machine will also be displayed.

The Acuity range of wide format inkjet printers will be showcased, as well as a broad range of applications delivered by Fujifilm Group’s latest technology, including signage and packaging.

Customized printing equipment and inks through Fujifilm integrated inkjet solutions will be highlighted for printers whose demands cannot be met by standard printers. In addition, case studies across a wide range of applications, including direct mail, transactional printing, labels, and embellishments will be presented at the show.

Fujifilm will show its Aquafuze inkjet ink technology at drupa. Launched in Autumn 2024, the Aquafuze inkjet ink technology combines water-based and UV-curable ink for wide-format inkjet printing applications. The UV-curable aqueous ink is suitable for indoor signage and wallpaper applications, meeting the growing needs of the wide format market, the company said.

The company will also exhibit the RxD Series, a pigment dispersion with high stability in the face of diversifying ink formulations spurred by digitalization. Moreover, Fujifilm will announce new products for print heads that enable versatility across a wide range of applications.

New Fujifilm Group environmental strategies will also be introduced. These include short run with the use of digital on-demand printing, processless offset printing plates, carbon-neutral production facilities, and recycling initiatives, the company said.

The man behind the machine

Impeccably printed labels don’t happen by accident. It takes a skilled press operator with high standards and an eye for quality. That’s where Bobby Parker comes in.

Bobby runs Columbine Label’s Domino/BossJet digital press. This hybrid system is a digital UV inkjet press with flexographic and die-cutting capabilities. One of the plant’s powerhouse printers, it is designed to handle large runs and shrink sleeves faster than other digital assets and can accommodate embellishments such as cold foil.

As the man behind the machine, Bobby explains, “Because of its speed and all-in-one capabilities, the Domino/BossJet produces finished labels as soon as they come off the machine without the extra step of going to our die cutters. That allows us to run larger quantity orders with the same turnaround as small runs.”

Long-time print pro

Bobby knows his way around a print press. He’s been in the business since 1989. Prior to joining Columbine Label in 2017, he worked as a press operator running both flexo and digital machines. He is not only qualified to run them, but also to maintain them. He says, “I am Maintenance Certified on the Domino and Level 3 Maintenance Certified on the HP 6800 so I am able to troubleshoot issues, reduce downtime and keep the systems running at top efficiency.”

Taking pride in quality

As a print professional, Bobby places top priority on attention to detail to achieve high standards. “My job is to ensure that our customers get a quality product in a timely fashion. I don’t like putting my name on something that doesn’t look good!”

When he’s not running the press, Bobby enjoys off-roading, hunting, and exploring the Colorado scenery with his wife Erin who also works at Columbine Label in Customer Support.
