Augsburg Ch R2: Riccardo Bonadio def. Diego Dedura-Palomero [Q] 6-4, 7-6(5) Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
Diego had his moments as he tried to come back in various moments possible, including during the second set tie-breaker, but it was not enough to prolong the match as his forehand let him down toward its end. While R. Bonadio's backhands became the questions midway, he maintained his range as it was stable enough under pressure, getting even more aggressive as he outhit Diego along the way. As a result, R. Bonadio optimized his chances even if he only had 4 break points by converting 75% of them, while Diego could only convert 33% of his 6 break points in the whole match due to the pressure points he succumbed to judging by his strokes, likely due to inexperience.
Service game-wise, it appeared that both players had their own strengths. R. Bonadio scored 3 aces than Diego's 1, which helped him having the slight edge in the first serves by winning 6% more first serve points than the German. However, since he double-faulted twice, his frequent rushes faded his second serve winning percentage 14% below Diego at 44%, but his first serves and its follow-ups turned out to be strong enough to stand out in this match.
In tomorrow's quarterfinals, R. Bonadio will face Federico Agustin Gomez, who stunned second seed Andrea Collarini 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. This could be a tough test for the former, considering Fede's current form, but the pacing and groundstrokes could be one of the aspect of attention in this match. Should be one of those exciting follows in between!

However, even if Diego tried to raise his game in the second set, R. Bonadio still managed to find his way out of some possible troubles. It might have seemed that R. Bonadio settled his rhythm as he took advantage of Diego's errors through a one-handed backhand winner to secure his early break to 1-0, consolidating his position to 2-0 afterward. Nonetheless, after Diego put his name on the board with a service game hold to 2-1, Diego's functional preceding backhand secured his initial break point before he turned out to break to 2-2. Somehow, as the next few games turned out to be service game holds, one of them also survived a break point but still managed to hold.
Fast-forward to the ninth game, the next games were opened in a solid fashion. For instance, an intuitive volley from R. Bonadio opened his service game before he held to 5-5 by its end. This was also followed by a backhand down-the-line pass from Diego, where he held to 6-5 by the end of that game. Ultimately, the tie-breaker became inevitable as R. Bonadio started with a one-point lead as he took advantage of Diego's preceding errors. As he lead to 4-2, Diego started equalizing through a forehand winner before lobbing his way to another equalizer to 4-4. However, after trading mini-breaks to 5-5, R. Bonadio came up with a forehand winner on his serve to hold and secure his match point to 6-5, which was converted through a +1 forehand error on Diego's half to secure the second set 7-6(5), as well as earning his berth to the quarterfinals.

Outside the bright lights of Roland Garros, which outside courts' plays were still delayed due to rain, the action continued in the Augsburg Challenger's second round with qualifier Diego Dedura-Palomero, whose maiden Challenger-level main draw victory against his fellow qualifier Daniel Dutra da Silva 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-2 made him became the first of his birth-year batch (2008) to achieve such feat, as well as the sixth youngest player to earn the said maiden win, taking on Riccardo Bonadio, who defeated Hazem Naw 6-3, 6-0 in the previous round. This match could be intriguing to see some clash of aggressions, but only those who nailed the pace could stand out in this match.
To start, R. Bonadio's backhands became a discourse when it worked or did not work. When it did not work, Diego could go after that, which error generated his second break point before it was converted due to R. Bonadio's forehand error to 4-2. However, the moment did not last long as R. Bonadio outhit Diego's forehands to create his break point before it was converted thanks to his preceding backhand to Diego's unforced error, thus he broke back to 4-3 before levelling the play back to 4-4.
Subsequently, R. Bonadio became more aggressive, firing a forehand winner for an equalizer before forcing Diego to err his forehands, ultimately breaking to 5-4. As he served for the first set, he faced a challenge as Diego started striking through his swift forehand return, somehow having 2 break points, the first one was made due to R. Bonadio's forehand error, before his recent one was fumbled due to his failed drop shot. Ultimately, R. Bonadio successfully served for the first set, affirming his solid play under pressure thanks to his experience.

Augsburg Ch R1: Diego Dedura-Palomero [Q] def. Daniel Dutra da Silva [Q] 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-2 Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
Daniel might have had the control in the first half of the match, but Diego was aggressive (and intuitive) enough to absorb some pace midway, working on to solve some scrappy service games while nailing his returns through his point construction. This way, he could match Daniel's pace and shift the moment in his favor before and after the rain delay, coming back from 6-7(1), 1-4 to holding his service games, injecting his pace through his groundstrokes until Daniel ran out of options at the end. As a result, Diego converted twice more break points than Daniel (6 to 3) even if both players had 16 opportunities to break.
Besides, it appeared that there was a tiny difference between both players' service games. As Daniel had a slight edge on his first serves thanks to his 3 aces, making him 1% ahead in his first serves than Diego. However, even though both players double-faulted thrice, Diego had the advantage as he won 51% of his second serve points, 5% more than Daniel, whose shot rushes toward the end of the match only faded his second serve percentages.
This victory brought Diego being the first out of his birth-year batch (2008) to win a Challenger-level match, as well as the sixth youngest person to win a Challenger-level main draw match in a list full of game's greats (which included Felix Auger-Aliassime, Rafael Nadal, and Gabriel Debru, among others). A must-watch/follow is his second round-match against Riccardo Bonadio, who defeated Hazem Naw 6-3, 6-0 in the first round earlier. Should be one of those matches of the day outside of the bright lights of Roland Garros!

Two hours after the rain delay in the Augsburg Challenger...
The match between qualifiers Diego Dedura-Palomero and Daniel Dutra da Silva continued at 5-all in the second set, where Diego scored a massive hold through an unreturned serve after preventing Daniel to break for the match. Diego successfully went after Daniel's backhands, which was evident from the initial and recent break points of the game before the former broke to 6-5. As a result, Daniel earned his chance to serve for the second set, which he successfully did to force the deciding set as he took the set 7-5.
Continuing from a solid end of the second set, Diego took advantage of Daniel's preceding errors that fumbled his game points, generating his latest break point through his backhand winner before immediately converting it to 1-0. Even though Diego had to face several break points midway, his forehand winner allowed him to consolidate his position to 2-0, and he did not look back since.
Somehow, Diego also capitalized on Daniel's preceding backhand errors and had a break point, which was converted due to the latter's forehand error. As a result, Diego earned an opportunity to serve for the match, which, despite conceding a point due to a drop shot error, Diego still affirmed his dominance and took the third set 6-2, securing his first Challenger-level main draw win, as well as the first Challenger victory for his birth-year batch (2008).

As if confirming his firm showing from the first set tie-breaker, Daniel broke early to 2-0 due to Diego's preceding backhand error, followed by a consolidation to 3-0. Afterward, Diego put his name on the board again with a service game hold to 3-1, and it took several more games before he started putting more pressure on Daniel's service game with another forehand finish, but the Brazilian still held his serves to 4-1.
After Diego held his serves to 4-2, his aggression paid off as he smashed his way to generate his break point right after Daniel's error before the German broke to 4-3 due to Daniel's double fault. Even though Diego had to survive a break point to hold to 4-4, Daniel also had 2 break points foiled before holding his serves to 5-4. Subsequently, Diego survived a 2-point deficit before he scored a working drop shot to Daniel's backhand error to create his game point, which was converted to 5-5 thanks to an unreturned serve before rain delayed play once again.
To be continued due to the rain delay.

Former junior World No. 44 (currently ranked 56) and 16-year-old Diego Dedura-Palomero received a wild card to the Augsburg Challenger qualifying round, where he turned out to stun first (qualifying) seed Martin Krumich 7-6(1), 7-6(6) in the first qualifying round before defeating Adrian Oetzbach 6-2, 6-2 for his Challenger-level main draw debut, where he faced his fellow qualifier (who turned out to be the second qualifying seed) Daniel Dutra da Silva. As he is notable for his intuitive point construction at times on par with his aggression, Daniel's recent form suggested this match could possibly be a decent test for what to come in this match.
Coming into this match even though it started an hour late due to rain, Diego might have had a nervy start as after a failed backhand drop shot, Daniel scored a timely forehand down-the-line winner for his break point before he broke early to 1-0 before consolidating his lead to 2-0. Somehow, Daniel used his experience to double his break thanks to his first-strike returns, outhitting Diego's forehand before the former's preceding forehand confirmed his double-break lead to 3-0 before holding through a fun exchange, ending a rally with a forehand fired from around-the-post.
However, Diego tried to stay in his range to finally put more pressure on Daniel. Diego put his name on the scoreboard with a service game hold to 4-1 before he took advantage of Daniel's errors to break to 4-2 through his preceding forehand, where he minimized the gap with a hold to 4-3 as he survived another break point with an unreturned serve. The Brazilian qualifier then had his chance to serve for the first set in the tenth game, but Diego turned out to break back (5-5) thanks to his backhand pass to secure his one-point lead before his break-back was converted thanks to his backhand return ace.
Subsequently, Diego secured a massive hold after surviving 2 break points, implying Daniel tried to stay even more aggressive. The tie-breaker then became inevitable to close the first set, where Daniel turned out to dominate the flow as he was already up a mini-break by the time Diego erred, doubling it with a forehand winner right from around the post, again (4-0), before finally securing the first set tie-breadstick (7-6(1)) with an unreturned serve to put himself in the driver's seat of this match.
