WEEZER. PART 1.

if you follow me, you have most likely (definitely) heard of the band weezer. and if you're reading this right now, you have heard of weezer 100% and have heard buddy holly once at the very least. and yeah. of course you have. since that's the most popular weezer song due to its success when it first released and recent internet memes.

now, for the very rare few who haven't heard of weezer:

weezer is a band from los angeles california. the band was formed in 1992 by rivers cuomo, patrick wilson, matt sharp, and jason cropper. although, the current members, (as of 2024), are rivers cuomo, patrick wilson, brian bell, and scott shriner. and me? im fucking obsessed with this band oh my god

the most popular weezer album huh...... the one that looks like buddy holly. the one with all of the memes associated with it. how did this album begin? why the fuck would rivers cuomo do this? is he okay? whale whale whale let me tell you dear child

the blue album, also known as weezer, which is weezers debut album, was released on may 10, 1994. the albums debut single is undone - the sweater song, which you have most likely heard of in some shape or form. although, despite the song gaining some success, many people had just seen the band as a gimmick or just some nerds. (to be fair, literally just look at them). after this, the band went: ok so uh. buddy holly becomes a single badabingbadaboom. along with this, there was a video directed by spike jonze (who also directed undone). the buddy holly music video is based off of the sitcom happy days from the 1970s by the way if youu somehow did not know. and boom . buddy holly AND weezer blew up . explosions everywhere babyyy. exploded so hard it won a mtv video music award.

after that, due to rivers being a fan of madame butterfly and getting inspired by it, he wanted to work on his own opera. named, songs from the black hole. it would require each weezer member to be assigned a character. two temporary female vocalists. and it would need to be spacey and synthy.

now, there's wayyy more things about this project, but im not going to talk abt them today.

but hey, did you know rivers went to harvard? probably, probably not, who knows. while at harvard, he got WRITERS BLOCK~ SO FUN!!! anywyas. ego suffering. limping while walking to class. not fun.

lets go. new weezer album, released on september 24, 1996. oh? mostly negative and eh reviews? uhhh. ummm.. ah, first single el scorcho music video! also a flop????? some people said it was the "worst album of 1996"????? well fuck.

k what now? umm. re-record PINK TRIANGLE!!!!!!! (that song is very special to me for many reasons by the way). oh . ok. pibk traingel released as a radio promo disc.

well! this didn't go so well. now, the band is going separate ways to work on projects??!!?!? erm what the sigma or whatever the kids say

lets fast forward um. several years. we don't usually see pinkerton like they did back then huh. yeah. critics had decided to go back to pinkerton and finally went: holy shit this is good

and with that, the first two weezer albums were born. damn! okay. how do we feel about these albums today again?

now, many weezer fans consider these two albums to be great. with some minority STILL not liking pinkerton. now, despite its mediocre reception when it was released, it is mostly considered to be a masterpiece. now, what about the blue album? classic. every weezer fan has to listen to this album. it may not be everyones favorite, but it is definitely appreciated. its like a stepping stone, waiting for greater things to come. the blue album and pinkerton are definitely some of the most important weezer albums.

​i straight up listened to full albums i listened to blue album and pinkterton. pinkerton i actually enjoyed a fair bit outside of you know. the weird fetishizing of asian women and the whole song about the japanese schoolgirl. Gotta say that Pink Triangle had me gagged as the guy who used to be the lesbian that straight boys were always asking out

Anyway I have already told on myself so bad here so I will just list the songs that were hitting for me: Sweater Song, Holiday, Why Bother?, El Scorcho (I feel like this song really epitomizes the duality of Weezer being really cringe but also having some genuine expressions of emotion,) and Falling For You.

Also unrelated to that emotional quagmire I did feel seen by The Good Life as Rivers Cuomo and I have the shared experience of being hobbled and trapped in our fucking houses while everyone else has fun.

Anyway listening to Weezer was a lapse into severe mental illness that I'm over now. Now that it's clear that we're just platonic I can continue to gun on him for being a Weezer fan. I at least had the excuse of being, at least hormonally, a down bad bitchless teenage boy

Not a request, but!! Thoughts on Pinkerton?

pinkerton is their best album easily. or at least my personal favourite (i could see arguments for blue and ewbaite).

pinkerton is definitely the most exciting and interesting album musically, it has a feel to it that i don’t think any of the other albums truly capture. the louder, rougher sound is unique for them and an incredible listening experience and the lyrics are truly something special. rivers writes so well on this album and it’s really interesting to hear the brutally honest wording.

pinkerton was my 2nd most listened to album last year (just after black parade) with like a full 25 hours spent listening to it it’s incredible, 10/10 album

you know what screw it, track by track opinions:

Tired of Sex - really good opening to the album, it introduces the tone of the whole project perfectly. i’m amazed at how well it translates onto pinkerton from SFTBLH, they managed to change it just enough to provide a fantastic opening. the kind of drone on the vocals emphasises rivers exhaustion with his current lifestyle very neatly and the sudden bursts of noise starting up as the lyrics become angrier is gnarly as hell i love the loud guitar

Getchoo - this one hits like crazy i love the sound of the chorus, the little ah-hAH right at the end of it when it goes slightly higher scratches the brain itch just right. the actual characters of the song feel so real, the whole album feels real, and it’s actually mint.

No Other One - same deal with the characters, this is gonna mostly just be me reiterating that Rivers killed it with the songwriting here. absolutely love this song, the long, winding intro kicking in suddenly with the bM-bm-Bm-bm-BM is heavenly, it’s a truly lovely melody (i have no clue how music actually works) and makes for a fantastic song, one of the best on the album

Why Bother? - this one makes me go bananas it’s so quick and fast and speedy and other synonyms and it just mmmmm good track good song everything explodes and i love it. also you guys know Rob Cantor from Tally Hall did a cover of this song for a Pinkerton tribute album and it’s really sick

Across the Sea - oh boy this is it this is the track where my opinion gets the account shut down. it’s good man it’s really good this song really hits. like obviously the lyrics are- they’re fucked they’re fucked up, but they’re honest and the fact that this song even exists at all and weezer put it on the album means a lot and made huge strides in musical lyricism as a whole. i honestly really enjoy it. and like it sounds good instrumentally as well the little piano noodles are so funny and chimey and cool and the repeating of the actual “i got your letter, you got my song” tune by the guitar immediately after it is nice it makes me happy

The Good Life - fucking insane track blam blam blam i love it i love it i love it. it’s time he got back. the actual historical elements of Rivers life that tie into this track is very interesting in regards to the weezer lore. this is a loud song and it’s a crazy song and everything about it is good and everyone should go listen to the good life

El Scorcho - now this is the song of all time. the lyrics are so silly goofy i adore them, he’ll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon man (the sudden slam i tot he chorus from that line is so good as well). Matt Sharps back in vocals are really nice to listen to, it isn’t his best vocal performance in the songs he was on but it’s very nice, and Brian Bells first ever vocal performance on a studio album (pretty sure he sang on the longtime sunshine recording earlier) is slaying honestly. that whole section of the song slams me violently back into the wall with some invisible force everytime i listen to it i mean how stupid is it i can’t talk about it i’ve gotta sing about it and make a record of my heart. anyway el scorcho good song ay carumba

Pink Triangle - funny funny gay song. unironically though this one is pretty perfect the instrumentals throughout the entire song is completely solid and i mean the lyrics are- they put my kind in the weezer lyrics. (actual history element of this is one of my favourite pasty’s of weezer lore, girl it’s about heard the song and it turns out she isn’t even a lesbian)

Falling For You - this one is my favourite weezer song. in my top 3 songs of all time alongside MCR - Mama and Komm Sußer Todd. it is, and it doesn’t feel like it the first time, but it is genuinely one of the greatest songs ever made. just listen to it. listen to the album. every little detail from the japanese voicelines in static at the beginning to the perfect melody and loudness of the chorus to the way all of the verses flow like that to the way he says little old three chord me (such a good line such a good line i am so normal) to the screaming the title in the final chorus. it’s immaculate. i love weezer pinkerton

Butterfly - this track is divisive. most people either think it’s the only good part of the album or it isn’t worth listening to after the rest of it. these people are incorrect. it’s a perfect closer for the album, after all the bangers, this is the mash to make, the full- bangers and mash. i actually do love the concept of winding it down at the end of the album like this and butterfly is really exactly how to do that. it’s beautiful and a really profound and perfect way to call back to the rest of the album and reflect on all the beautiful themes and concepts touched on. and hey, if butterfly doesn’t do it for you, you always have…

THE BONUS TRACKS ON PINKERTON DELUXE

i won’t talk about all of these specifically but Devotion, I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams, Longtime Sunshine and Tragic Girl are all favourites of mine. blast off! too even though that’s not actually on pinkerton deluxe. Songs From The Black Hole was an incredibly interesting concept and a lot of the unused tracks from it or parts that were worked on to pinkerton also stand as incredible pieces of art

The Hella Mega Tour Review: 8/15, Wrigley Field, Chicago

The lights went out, and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” played, followed by The Ramones’ “Blitzkrieg Bop”, as the trademark “person in a pink bunny suit” pretending to be drunk pumped up the crowd. Perhaps no two songs, nor the aforementioned image, encapsulate Green Day’s career any better. The East Bay punks eventually turned into rock opera scribes, all the while maintaining their sense of irreverence. But what separates Green Day’s live performance is a sense of togetherness, even in the face of songs about impending political revolution or the threat of debilitating apathy. As Billie Joe Armstrong and company launched into the title track of American Idiot, the first of a breakneck 21-song set, they had a sold out Wrigley Field chanting every word back to them. Each of their songs feel born from a specific time and place, but if they have anything, its generational staying power, and not just because songs about the evils of the Bush administration have proved still relevant given recent news.

At this point, Green Day can play a seamless, pitch-perfect set in their sleep. Armstrong’s voice is smooth when it needs to be on “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, delving into bratty screams for maximum impact on “Brain Stew”. Bassist Mike Dirnt’s playing is limber and heavy, introducing “Longview” with confidence and ease, while drummer Tré Cool breaks down and builds back up “Welcome to Paradise” the same way you remember when you first heard it. Their addition of touring musicians--guitarist and vocalist Jason White, long-time multi-instrumentalist Jason Freese, and newcomer Kevin Preston--gives their more rounded out songs a depth to add beneath their otherwise jagged edges. And of course, Armstrong’s a man of the people. He’s found a way to bring fans on stage in the era of COVID, making sure those who come on to help them cover Operation Ivy’s “Knowledge” stay far from their bubble and can keep the guitar afterwards. In a more subtle way, when he could have easily addressed the crowd as “Chicago,” he also included neighboring states and the entire Midwest, recognizing that this show was the tour’s only one in flyover country. (Don’t worry, Wrigley fans; he did “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during “Minority”, correctly singing, “Root for the Cubbies.”)

Yeah, I could pick a couple bones with the set, like no “Jaded” immediately after “Brain Stew”, and the mere existence of buzzkill “21 Guns” in the setlist. For the most part, though, this is a band who knows exactly what it’s doing and is very good at it, giving the crowd only 2 songs written after 2010.

If nostalgia sells, then Weezer’s set was for you, from their Jazz cup color scheme to Rivers Cuomo’s mullet-and-mustache look. I mean, their second 2021 album is called Van Weezer, for goodness sakes. Their Halen tributes start with entering the stage to “Jump” and peak at Cuomo’s two-handed tapping riff on “The End of the Game”, but they’re referenced in performances of classics, like the riffing on the outro of “My Name is Jonas”. Like Green Day, Weezer have always balanced angst with tongue-in-cheek humor, but with little room for politics, they’re all fun and games. Recent tunes like “Hero”, “Fees Like Summer”, and “All My Favorite Songs” are catchy, appropriately thoughtless ear candy, as is their cover of Toto’s “Africa”. And Weezer, too, knows why their fans are there, to hear “El Scorcho” and “Say It Ain’t So” and be drowned in purple and turquoise confetti during “Buddy Holly”.

To me, Green Day and Weezer’s embrace of absurdity is why the inclusion of Fall Out Boy on this tour--especially sandwiched in between the other two--felt off. I’ll be the first to admit it: They’re not my cup of tea, so I might not be the best judge of their set, and a packed stadium faithfully holding up phone lights during all the slow songs probably proves me wrong. But aside from the genuine coolness of a Wilmette band getting to play once again at the ballpark they grew up going to, the whole concept of their set felt at once overcooked and over-earnest. A video intro and outro from, uh, Ron Livingston, and multiple set changes fit a narrative about as structured as something from the mind of latter-day Billy Corgan. Their blowtorch guitars and piano lasted multiple songs, dulling their effect, while Patrick Stump belted “Save Rock and Roll” and “The Least of the Real Ones”. They sounded best when their songs had little fanfare, on classics like “Sugar, We’re Going Down”, “Dance, Dance”, and the stomping “I Don’t Care”. And if they could spend on fireworks during “Centuries”, they could surely have gotten a horn section for “Irresistible” instead of relying on samples.

Speaking of horns, if you’re looking for a band that made the most of their allotted time and opportunity, that would probably be L.A. ska punk band The Interrupters, who blasted through a fun, raw 8-song set while much of the crowd was still walking in. They played pretty evenly from their three studio albums, plus a cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”. The throaty delivery of singer Aimee Allen (aka Aimee Interrupter) was the perfect complement to the literal band of brothers, guitarist Kevin Bivona and bassist and drummer Justin and Jesse. It was a set both well-played and curated by the bookers, one that should generate some crossover fandom with the other established bands and that fit the celebratory, somewhat sardonic tone of Green Day and Weezer. I mean, if you’re gonna call it the Hella Mega Tour, you want bands that can take a joke.

PLOT: Calpurnia is using the recording studio after you and it turns out that Finn loves your music a little more than you though he could.

Recording was your favourite part of making an album. After your debut EP was released over a year and a half ago, you could not wait to get back into the studio. But before that, you had to write the music and collaborate with others which was a long process but it was totally worth it and you could really feel it in the studio. There were only two more songs that you needed to finish up before you were done. Today you had been working on your favourite song, one that was reminiscent of The Tragically Hip’s song Grace, Too. It was mellow bit still alternate rock.

You were in the middle of the final run when you noticed a small group enter the room just outside of the booth. You couldn’t quite make out who it was since you were trying to concentrate on your harmonies but once you had finished you removed your headphones and made your way out.

“Who’s our guests?” You asked at no one in particular to the room full of people.

The boy with the mop of black curly hair who was bent over a guitar case stood up and turned to you. “We’re Calpurnia.” He introduced. “I’m Finn- “

“Finn Wolfhard” You interrupted. “Yeah I’ve heard your guys play before!” You said.

Finn looked around at his other bandmates with a smile. “That’s awesome!” He exclaimed. “We’re fans of your work actually, Ayla won’t stop singing your songs”

“Your voice is amazing, you’ve got such a unique sound” Ayla said.

Your face turned into a great smile. “Wow thanks, that really means a lot” You said sincerely. You were still a small artist, so it really felt great to hear people say that they loved your music.

“We’re recording some new material today,” Finn said. “It’d be cool if you stayed and listened but uh, only if you wanted to, you don’t have to!” Finn stumbled, spitting out his words nervously.

You looked at your phone and checked the time. You didn’t have to be anywhere for a few hours so you figured you might as well hang around and listen. “Yeah sure, I’d love to” You smiled.

A huge grin came across Finn’s face and he nodded before moving around to get everything set up for their session.

Malcom was the first to record on the drums. They were recording their first original song during this session. It currently didn’t have an official name yet. Finn only referred to it as Song 101. While Malcom was recording, you were sat on the old purple couch outside of the booth watching everything going on inside. Finn came and plopped himself down next to you and started talking.

“So how did you get into music?” He asked right off the bat.

“Well my dad was a sound engineer, like one of the people who works on producing music sort of, and so he would always be playing all kinds of music around the house and I just sang along. My mom stuck me in piano lessons which I loathed but reluctantly did anyways. I wanted to take guitar but she said that piano was the base of understanding all instruments so I didn’t start guitar until I was like eleven I think.” You explained. Your music history wasn’t that interesting yet everyone wanted to know it.

Finn eyes were lit with excitement. “That’s so cool, I’m not great at piano, like I wish I was better but guitar is my thing.”

“It suits you,” You said. “Your voice is great too but the guitar makes the complete package.”

“You like my voice?” Finn asked.

You shrugged. “Yeah, you’ve got this cool indie rock persuasion sound which I totally dig.”

Finn’s already there grin slipped into a full smile. “Thanks, that means a lot” He said sincerely.

Before you two could talk more, Dan, the man in charge of recording, announced that Finn was needed in the booth. Finn looked at you with a look of excitement before pushing off the couch and picking up his guitar.

“Break a leg!” You encouraged and Finn let out a deep breath before pushing open the door and entering the booth.

“Let’s do vocals, yeah?” Dan said into the mic so Finn could hear. He nodded his head before Dan pressed some buttons so Finn could sing. You watched intently as Finn closed his eyes before starting.

“See you driving round town with a chip on your shoulder

Well it’s you who gets the last laugh after I call her

I feel cold, oh lord I feel cold.

I feel cold.” Finn sang.

Dan stopped to comment. “That sounded great. Let’s move on to the next part, okay?”

Finn nodded and Dan cued him again for singing. This time you noticed as Finn didn’t close his eyes as he sang. Instead he looked right at you.

“When I’m gone you’re there,

When I’m gone you’re here,

When I’m gone you’ll be older,

When I’m gone you’ll always be cold.

I feel cold, oh lord I feel cold. I feel cold.”

Finn sang with a look of both aspiration yet desperation at the same time. You could only wonder who he was singing to.

Nonetheless, he sounded great. He was able to move his voice around, creating a crisp sound that only he could. You’ve listened to Calpurnia before, once live at the Strange 80’s show. Their cover of Weezer’s El Scorcho was your favorite. You knew that this band was going to go far.

Caught up in your thoughts, you hadn’t noticed that Finn finished with the vocals and now Dan had him working on guitar. Now as you paid attention, you watched as Finn waited for Ayla to join him in the booth. Until she was ready Finn decided it was time to goof around.

First, he was trying to play with his opposite hand but the sound it was making was as atrocious as it was funny. Finn enjoyed seeing you laugh so he continued on. He swung his guitar behind his head and tried to play the chords without being able to see. He was actually pretty decent at this, something that can only be done with lots of practice. Finally, you watched as Finn attempted to play the chorus while only standing on one leg. By now you had already pulled your phone out and was snapchatting the whole experience. Finn was holding his balance pretty well before toppling over, guitar and all. At this point, Ayla was ready to go and Dan was not impressed but you were doubled over with laughter.

“Finn, please get up.” Dan said over the speaker before glancing back to you with a look.

Finn quickly jumped back up, adjusting his guitar to the right place. “Yep, sorry Dan.” He said with a nervous smile but as soon as Dan looked away, Finn was winking at you with a smirk.

Ayla and Finn worked together, strumming out the chords and swinging the melodies. You couldn’t help but stare at Finn as he played. On stage, he has such a persona that was completely different from what you were seeing. Here he was concentrating, rocking to the rhythm and letting it take over him as he played. It was a whole other Finn. And for some reason you felt lucky that you got to see it.

Soon enough, Finn’s time in the booth was over and he was walking back to you, slinging his guitar off his body and into its case.

“How did that sound?” Finn asked slightly out of breath.

“It sounded amazing.” You said. “You sounded amazing!” You added.

Finn blushed and sheepishly looked away. “Really?” He asked.

“Yeah! You’re like a whole other person in there, completely different from when I saw you on stage!” You explained.

“You’ve seen us live?” He asked with wide eyes.

You nodded with a grin.

“When?” He asked, hungry for your answers.

“Strange Eighties.” You said. “I know El Scorcho was an exception to the theme but you guys killed it! Best version I’ve ever heard, hands down” You added.

Finn looked like he was about to pass out. He threw himself down onto the couch beside you.

“No way!” He said astounded. “I’m going to need you to write that down for me because no one will believe me when I tell them that Y/N L/N likes my music!”

You laughed at the boy next to you and reached for a scrap piece of paper on the table nearby. “Okay sure” you said shaking your head. You quickly scribbled out the sentence you had just said and held it out to Finn.

He glanced at the paper before accepting it. “You should also write your number on that too” He said with a cheeky grin.

You leaned back into the couch and crossed your arms still holding the paper in your hand. “Are you asking me out Finn Wolfhard?” You raised an eyebrow smirking back.

Finn blushed but didn’t give up. “Well technically I am asking for your number, but since you seem so willing I guess I could ask you out as well.”

You uncrossed your arms and started to write your number on the scrap paper. “Okay, but I’ll only say yes if there’s ice cream involved.” You stated with a smile.

You held out the paper for Finn and this time he took it from you. “Are you serious?” he asked with wide eyes. You looked at him with confusing face. “You’ll actually go out with me?”

You nodded your head while tucking your hair behind your ear. “Yeah, of course.” You smiled.

“Fuck yeah” Finn said, excitement all over.

From across the room Jack piped up. “Swear jar, Finn.” He said in a monotone voice. He must have to say it often.

Finn reached into his jeans pocket and pulled out a quarter. “It was worth it” he said as he threw the coin over to his bandmate.
