The Etiquette of Reviews
Hold my purse, Iâm about to rant.
Since my dive back into fandom, I have fully immersed myself into the whole fandom culture. Previously, I was part of the 2009 FanFic.net crew (if you know, you know).Â
It was a simpler and yet harsher time back then. Iâve seen a few posts floating around Tumblr outlining the history of fandom and how far we have come in terms of Ao3 and rights etc etc etc.Â
Thatâs not this post.Â
This post is about the plethora of other posts that I have seen regarding, what I have come to call, âgatekeepingâ.Â
It goes without saying, that the majority of any fandom are consumers of media in any form. It also goes without saying, that everyone is a critic. What Iâm about to say, will boil down to this one simple statement:Â
You absolutely have the right to say and express yourself in anyway you wish -Â but this does not give you the right to hurt someone.Â
As readers and consumers of fandom content, there will be stuff that you disagree with. This is now a well-established message - youâre an adult, if you donât like X out.Â
In light of the tiktok cancel campaigns, I feel like an insidious part of fandom needs to be addressed.Â
This incessant need to cannibalise ourselves.Â
Did that grab your attention?Â
Good. Now listen.
Authors and artists are receiving instantaneous feedback from tens, hundreds - sometimes thousands of people and humans are not built for this type of psychological assault. It hurts when you receive a bad review - Hell Iâve had a few! The worst being:
This is fucking shit. Donât waste your time.
(You canât fault them really, they were to the point.)
As a creator, you accept that you will receive bad reviews, and as much as it hurts you accept that that will be the case because not everyone will like the art that you produce.Â
But what is worse, when someone from within fandom, someone who is either a fellow creator or hides behind an anonymous guest tag, deliberately sets out to find fault in your work. And then they decide that itâs appropriate to leave âhelpfulâ comments in the review section. These comments are from people who portray themselves to be better and more knowledgable than you, and then they try to teach you how write or draw or whatever - as if you havenât spent hours on the thing that they are reviewing.Â
They come across as the friendly helping face, and yet they leave patronising and condescending messages publicly either in the review section, or on a public forum like Discord.Â
Let me make this clear.Â
YOU ARE NOT BEING HELPFUL
YOU ARE BEING RUDE
YOU ARE BEING PATRONISING
AND YOU ARE BEING AN ODIOUS BLOODY BULLY
If you would like to be helpful and leave constructive criticism, reach out to the author privately via DM and say:
âhey, really sorry to say this, I hope you donât mind. I found a typo in x paragraph. I thought you may like to know.â
Or, if you are going to leave a public review - SHIT SANDWICH!Â
âhey I really like this thing that you did here.
I hope you donât mind me saying, thereâs a typo here.
This thing you did there was fantastic. Looking forward to the next chapter!â
AND THATâS IT!
Calling out creators in this patronising, demeaning way in public, does not make you look big, nor does it make you look clever.Â
If the creator does not ask for constructive criticism - do not leave it. Chances are, their work has already gone through multiple hours of edits and peer-reviews and all-sorts. If they do not ask, do not assume that your concrit will be received well.Â
SECONDLY
Other creators who think that it is their place to gatekeep. They do this again, by appearing like a friendly face, when in fact they come in and say that âthis FANDOM detail is wrongâ.Â
OR, highlighting their own work as being an example of good or correct, when criticising yours!
NO! NO! NO! NO!
If your opinions are that strong, do it behind closed doors in DMâs - thatâs just common fucking curtesy! We all receive the same negative press from the general readers on public forums, we donât need it from our own too!Â
Finally
I feel like this needs to be said, because the people who do the above, also tend to portray certain characteristics and behaviours when they interact with people.Â
STOP. TAKING. YOURSELF. SO. GODDAMN. SERIOUSLY!
Arrogance translates across written text, far more than you think it does.Â
Everytime you leave one of these insidious patronising comments, or take over a thread to self-promote when NOBODY FUCKING ASKED, you leech the fun from fandom, just that little bit more.Â
This is not me saying that you canât leave bad reviews - darling, if you want to go off, be true to your belief. BUT you do not have the right to hurt the creator with your words. Just donât come in, acting like a friend and ally, only to stab the knife in our backs at the last minute. Have some fucking integrity and own your shitty behaviour.
GET SOME CLASS AND STAY IN YOUR LANE.Â

IBTHNTTTY - 9
Bucky Barnes x Female Reader
Summary: Y/n hates Bucky Barnes. Absolutely loathes him what makes it worse is that she has to share her office with him. Now with a promotion on the horizon she has to find a way to work with him and not against him.
Word Count: 1621
Warnings: this one has a lot of fluff, swears, sickness stuff, your welcome
A/n: leaving comments/ sending asks makes me happy
Working with Bucky on their project was turning out to be much simpler than Y/n once thought. During the first half of the week, heâd been super sweet to her. Honestly, it had set her on edge. Then one Wednesday, he had a personality change and was back to being a dick.
Which was almost a relief, but Y/n would be lying if she said that she hadnât enjoyed the softer side of Binky Barnes. She had taken to calling him Binky in her mind to distance herself from those unwelcome feelings. Spoiler alert: it wasnât working.
And to top off this week, sheâd had a surge of anxiety on Thursday night. It was messing with her stomach, and when she woke up Friday morning, she didnât feel much better.Â
Y/nâs car had finally escaped Carolâs grasp and was sitting in her building's garage. But Y/n realized that walking made her feel like she was exercising daily, so she felt less guilty about lounging on the couch the rest of the time.
The smart thing to do wouldâve been to drive her car, especially since it was pouring down rain. But she knew that if sheâd even tried to get into any moving vehicle, she wouldâve gotten car sick. She had this notion that if she got fresh air, she would feel better. It was just a minor stomach ache, after all.Â
Her rain jacket that had been a gift from her parents had done nothing in the rainstorm. Neither had the fresh air. Her stomach was still uneasy.
Her outfit clung to every nook and cranny of her body, not leaving much to the imagination. Little baby hairs that had escaped their cages were now glued to her face. And she was dripping, legitimately dripping all over the floor.
As she entered the building, she had a thought. A troubling thought, she could risk getting motion sickness in the elevator that would last a few seconds, a minute at most. Or she could walk up the stairs, but who knows how long that would take.
Elevator it was then. She walked into an empty one hoping that she would get to suffer alone. (She was always extremely grumpy when she got sick.) But she wasnât ill. It was just anxiety.Â
Just as the doors started to close, Bucky slid through them. Damn it.
âHey,â he greeted, not looking up from his phone. Y/n responded with a nod.
The elevator jolted into motion, and she almost heaved right then and there. She held her fist over her mouth and closed her eyes.Â
âAre you ok?â He asked, looking over at her.Â
Y/n waved him off. She was uncomfortable; her clothes were still soaking. (Not that she thought they would magically dry between entering the building and the elevator, but one could dream.) All she wanted to do was rip them off and put on her biggest and comfy-est t-shirt then crawl into bed. Ok, so maybe she shouldâve stayed at home.
He closed the distance between them. She felt his hand, which was freezing, against her forehead.
âYour hand is cold,â she whined.
âNo. You're just hot,â Bucky said.
âStop trying to get in my pants, Binky.â His hand stiffened against her forehead and was pulled away.
âI meant your temperature, youâre burning up. Did you walk here in the rain?â
Y/n swallowed, attempting to keep the bile from coming up. âNo, I rode my roller skates.â
âI highly doubt you wouldâve even been able to get the skates on. Go home, you're sick.â
The doors opened with a soft ding, and Y/n was off the elevator in a flash. She walked to her office with her head held high, ignoring the looks she got from her co-workers. They were probably staring at her because she was sopping wet, but Y/n felt like they could sense her sickness.
No, she was not sick.
When she was finally safe in her office, she slumped down into her chair.
âYou need to go home,â Bucky repeated.Â
âI have a deadline,â she paused, âtoday that I canât miss.â
âHow long will it take you to finish it?â
Y/n didnât answer. She was focused on getting the draft edited and sent off.
Luckily the edits were mostly done, so she finished the draft before noon. Before she got the chance to send it, she pulled her trashcan into her lap and vomited.
A hand started rubbing small circles on her back.Â
âLet me take you home,â Bucky whispered.Â
With no more fight in her, she sent the manuscript to Natasha and let Bucky help her out of her chair. She pulled away from him just as someone knocked at their office door.
Coulson entered after Bucky told him to. âI have a -â Coulson took one look at Y/n and froze, âGood God, Y/n, are you ok?â
âShe appears to be a little sick, so I was going to take her home. All her work is done for the day -â
âYes, of course,â Coulson nodded and stepped out of their way, âyou can take the rest of the day too, Barnes.â
âThank you, sir.â
Y/n walked through the office space, this time a little less confidently, with Bucky right behind her.Â
Once in the elevator, Y/n leaned most of her body weight on the railing. There were small black dots in her vision and her knees buckled beneath her. Bucky was quick to catch her before she could fall to the ground; he then lifted her into his arms.
She mumbled something about being too heavy for Bucky to carry, his only response was for her to shut up. Letting herself relax in his arms and nuzzled her face into his neck.Â
âYou smell good,â she mumbled.Â
Buckyâs chest rumbled with laughter. âIâm surprised that my smell isnât making you nauseous.â
âDid you not shower today or something?â
âYouâre halfway to death and still making fun of me,â he chuckled.
âSomeone has to; if I donât, your head will get too big, and youâll be insufferable.â
âI think youâll be pleased to know that you are not the only one who thinks that,â he told her. She hummed into his chest.
* * *
Y/n mustâve fallen asleep because the next thing that registered was Bucky helping her out of the car and into her building. He tried to pick her up, but she was being stubborn and walked with Bucky hot on her heels.Â
He stood by patiently while she fumbled with her keys. Bucky gently grabbed the keys from her hand.
âI can do it,â she whispered.
âSunflower,â he chuckled.
She froze and looked at him. âYou havenât called me that all week. Are you mad at me? Did I do something to make you mad at me? Because Iâm sorry if I did. I donât really hate you.â
He opened the door, and she walked in. Slowly, she melted to the floor, ready to just sleep there.
âNo, no, no,â Bucky said, helping her to her feet. âYou need to get out of those clothes and into something dry before you catch a cold on top of the flu.â
âI donât have the flu.â
âSunflower -â Bucky walked with her as she half led him to her bedroom.
âYou never answered my question,â she said. Without thinking about it, she stripped down to her underwear.
âOh my god,â Bucky quickly turned his back to her. âYou canât just take off your clothes like that.â
âIâm in my own house and -â she opened and closed her drawers. She finally found a new change of panties and her comfy shirt. After changing, she walked over to her bed. âYouâre avoiding my question.â
âNo, Iâm not mad at you,â he said.Â
âBucky, come here,â Y/n ordered. Once he was standing next to her bed, she opened an eye to look at him. âWill you stay?â
âOh, I donât trust you not to do anything stupid,â Bucky reached out with his right hand and gently pressed it to her forehead. âDo you have a thermometer?â
An unbidden giggle escaped her lips. âMy mom made me my very own first aid kit when I moved here. Itâs in the bathroom under the sink.âÂ
Buckyâs thumb stroked her eyebrow before he walked away.
âIs your first aid kit in a little mermaid lunch box?â He called from the bathroom. She mumbled something into her pillow, not even she knew what she was trying to say. âHere.â
He held out the thermometer for her.Â
âWill you do it? Just stick it in my armpit,â she groaned.
âBelieve it or not, sunflower, Iâve taken someoneâs temperature before,â He said.
âSome people are a stick it in the mouth kind of people. I just donât want you to put my armpit thermometer in my mouth.â
âNoted.â He hesitated, then Y/n pulled at her neckline to give him access to her pit.Â
âIâm hungry.â
âProbably because youâve puked up everything youâve eaten,â pulled the thermometer from her after it beeped. âBut youâll have to wait until you donât dry heave for a few hours. You are currently at 103. If you go above that, Iâm taking you to the doctorâs.â
Y/n grabbed his hand, and he stilled. She pulled him closer to him. Getting the hint, he took off his shoes.
âYou donât have to wear your pants,â she said. âUnless youâre going commando. I donât want your dick out ready to play.â
He ignored her and climbed onto her bed and sat next to her. He didnât get under the covers at all, nor did he lay down.

Nabeâs Predicament
In Summary:
The Nabe-Miyuki-Zono arc is quite possibly one of the most refreshing Daiya arcs for the sole reason that itâs a conflict that happened outside the field instead of on it. But besides that, it was truly an eye-opening one, and itâs something so petty and yet something much deeper than what it seems. Itâs very controversial? People are still talking about it even if itâs been resolved a long time ago. And itâs ridiculous how much people want to drag it out.
The Nabe arc was an arc that exposed what Miyuki lacks as a captain, what the team needed to address, the 2nd stringersâ struggles, etc. It was a very important phase in Seidoâs development as a team. In my opinion, it was not designed for fans to decide who was wrong and who wasnât. In fact, no one was truly right or wrong in that situation. Itâs perfectly valid to understand which side more? It was a minor disagreement, and people will either be Miyuki or Zono in that situation who were more or less two opposite sides of the spectrum. I personally side with Kuramochi, but realistically, there was a much better way to address that conflict w/o anyone getting hurt.
Nabeâs Problem
Terajima prefaces Watanabe Hisashi (better known as Nabe) as a rather meek character. The first time we see him, he attempts to approach Miyuki to talk about something but backs down immediately after losing the confidence to continue.
(Daiya no Ace Act I, Ch. 258)
We find out eventually that he and his friends (Kudo and Higashio) have been feeling some sort of distance, a vast difference in motivation between themselves and the rest of the team. We have never seen Nabe before this, and it makes sense. Heâs a player who has always been sidelined, just like the rest of the team that never had the slightest chance of making it into the 20-man roster.
Nabeâs problem is brought up again by Miyuki himself, which takes us to the next segment.
From Miyukiâs Perspective
Basically, Miyuki can be stubbornly annoying about his own set of beliefs, but ultimately, he always means well. Weâve already established that Nabe is kind of shy. Heâs not very forward about his thoughts and convictions, so Miyuki had to bring up the issue again; otherwise, it wouldâve stayed up in the air for an indefinite time. Conveniently, Nabe brought books for review, and Miyuki caught on to what he was about to say before he could talk more.
(Daiya no Ace Act I, Ch. 260)
âBy that, you mean you want to quit the team?â â...I canât stop someone who says he wants to quit of his own will.â Miyuki assumed Nabe was already decided, but he hadnât considered why Nabe came to talk in the first place. Thatâs where things went wrong. Just hearing those words from a big shot like Miyuki left no space for Nabe in that conversation. He was talking over him. Miyuki is GOOD at reading people but only really when it comes to baseball. Even when he was trying to help Eijun through his yips, we see how heâd failed to comfort Eijun when he went and poked at his lack of control and âstupidity.â That kind of prodding and encouragement only works On The Field when Eijun is looking at the prize and not when heâs already caught up in his own thoughts and insecurities. (EDIT: After reading into it more, I think Miyuki wanted to provoke Eijun into focusing singly on one thing, instead of getting caught up in his thoughts about something he canât do. BEFORE heâd turned him over to Chris. But this is for another discussion.) The same thing happens with Nabe, because Miyuki fails to take into account who heâs talking to as well as other important things. To put it simply, Nabe, Kudo and Higashio were already feeling extremely alienated, because they felt the difference in motivation watching everyone else. For Miyuki to go ahead and say something that could potentially make someone feel disposable and replaceable, he didnât exactly help Nabe figure things out on his own.
So chaos ensues, and the team confronts him about it.
From Zonoâs Perspective
On the other hand, Zono is someone who has a lot of ~feelings~ regarding things like teamwork, friendship and whatnot. Zono might be a little more idealistic. Clearly, thereâs a difference in values here. Thatâs mostly what it is. So feeling extremely passionate about this, Zono lashes out on Miyuki. From his perspective, Nabe came to Miyuki because he wanted to talk, but the conversation turned out to be more one-sided than heâd expected. And that frustrated Zono who understands what Nabe must feel. Miyuki has his own set of issues, but not being secure in his position was never one of them. Letâs be honest. Miyuki has the confidence to challenge The Best because he has the potential to beat The Best. But not everyoneâs like him. Not everyone is the teamâs indisputable 4-hole or indisputable starting catcher.
(Daiya no Ace Act I, Ch. 272)
Zonoâs frustration at Miyuki was valid, but to take it out on him was not. Instead, in an ideal scenario where teenagers have an incredibly good grasp of their emotions, Zono would have taken the most logical step and given Miyuki a possible and better resolution. Or assisted him. If he really thought he was right and cared so much about the situation more than his own feelings, he would have already approached Nabe.
The Resolution
Now that thatâs out of the way, the more pressing issue is to talk about how they eventually resolved it. Because I donât think enough people talk about how they did. Surprisingly, I think Kataoka offered the best, most reasonable response to the situation. So Nabe and friends are called to the coachâs den or whatever you call it, and they bring up the thing about switching to managerial positions. Here, I think Nabe had already decided to quit. Which is valid. But Kataokaâs words really hit.
(Daiya no Ace Act I, Ch. 296)
Kataoka gives rise to the question:Â âWho are you swinging for?â He doesnât give them a definite answer, but he gives them space to think. To break it down, Kataoka admits that the system can be unfair to players like Nabe who could never get their chance. By doing this, he does not delude them into thinking they will surely get their chance. But swinging their bats every single chance they could will definitely take them somewhere. Because they arenât on the team only to play for Seido, theyâre also doing this for their own sakes. Itâs hopeful and realistic. It doesnât tread into the defeatist attitude that could make players feel like theyâre playing for a fruitless cause (looking at you, Miyuki). It doesnât sugarcoat things either, because itâs okay to give up sometimes, and you donât have to force yourself if youâre no longer into it (looking at you, Zono). If thereâs still a fire burning inside of them, then they donât have to give up yet. Kataoka takes from both Zono and Miyukiâs POVs and provides Nabe and friends more space to think and eventually decide.
Hereâs a quick run-through of the resolution on Miyuki and Zonoâs parts! Itâs admirable how Miyuki consulted Tetsu instead of letting the issue be. Season 2 is where Miyuki learns to take responsibility. Because S1 Miyuki was a lot more playful and ~free~. He just let things happen before the enormity of things would eventually dawn on him (See: Eijunâs reaction to the home run heâd given up the first time). Miyuki makes sure to approach Nabe and make him ~feel~ part of the team, apologizing in-game, thanking him for the data, etc. This continues until after consulting Tetsu. On the other hand, Zono only realized things after Junâd confronted him about it. After That Talk, Zono realized where he was wrong and attempted to make amends with both Miyuki and Nabe.Â
In Conclusion
That arc wasnât meant for fans to side with Miyuki or Zono and to criticize the other, to hold them accountable for it even after both have grown since then. Itâs stupid to drag out something thatâs already been resolved ages ago. What instead could be drawn from that arc is the difference in values between an absolute genius and someone who has to work twice as hard to get to a certain level of skill. Miyuki is by no means a readymade genius; he just has a natural feel for baseball to the extent that he was promoted to first string as soon as he joined the team. On the other hand, Zono has to put in more work to even get on Miyukiâs level. And this arc opened our eyes to the reality of the players on the sidelines, the players on the stands. Much of it is also deciding things FOR yourself, to learn when to step down and give up and when to keep pushing. Thereâs so much nuance and room for discussion. But people make it seem so much simpler than it really is.

Hi! Iâve never taken part before, but I would be very interested in doing so this round. I would prefer to take part in sfw prompts
(Edited this for a few grammatical errors and to clarify my responses a bit better)
Response from mod @i-want-my-iwtv: Excellent! Yep, weâre thinking of keeping this SFW, and perhaps starting up a separate kin/kmeme.Â
This ask was re: a possible 2020 VC Secret Spring/Summer Santa, which got a surprising amount of support!Â
âŚso weâre working on it behind the scenes, hopefully will have a setup and signups deadline soon! Responses to the tags/comments on that post below.
Just looking at that gif above, SUCH SIMPLER TIMES. I miss the days when our biggest fandom arguments were so fictionally indulgent and inconsequential, like Louisâ hair length and texture SIIIIIGH THOSE.WERE.THE.DAYS.Â
ââ
@orangedarcy:Â Can I ask just a general question about fic posting in the VC fandom? Â I know most fic is now posted on AO3, but is there another more community driven place like LiveJournal used to be? I have fallen so far behind on the fic world, where does one post stories these days? Is it all here on Tumblr or is it mainly AO3 now?
Very good question. AO3 is the main place for just fic, some comment threads there, and ppl sometimes posted drabbles here on tumblr, and there are roleplayers here who do threads that are like collaborative fics⌠you can check my #RP tag to try to find them, but I admit I am out of date myself having taken a big step back from tumblr to focus on real life.Â
There were LJ-esque places on Dreamwidth long before Tumblr, and I believe theyâre all abandoned except for VC-Media where Iâm a mod. You can find it through @vcmedia, ppl do post fic there, mods post drabble prompts weekly, and there have been some wonderfully lively times!
I had started the VC-Media tumblr blog a few yrs ago when we (the mods) wanted to try directing some traffic to the DW comm, to bring in some fresh blood (pun intended), but I hadnât promoted it much bc I didnât want the tumblr anti-shippers and/or trolls flooding it and trampling ppl. At that time, I had seen the antis in other fandoms choosing targets to bully on tumblr and twitter, using social justice window-dressing that was really only about them wanting attention. In our fandom, Iâd seen similar bad-faith arguments over problematic characters/ships and I didnât want to engage with it or invite it to a comm setting, bc thatâs not what fandom is about for me.
Not to go on a rant here but I need to say it: Criticism is going to happen, and everyone has a right to criticize media. What was lost for a few years there is the concept that no one owes you their time or engagement in a conversation, especially not one in which one side demands complete submission from the other, and nothing less. Whether or not the criticism is the âOne True Interpretation,â no one owes you their time or engagement.Â
Thatâs still a concern of mine, but I am confident that my wonderful co-mods of VC-Media are ready to freeze comments and ban ppl who attempt to bully others or provoke arguments in bad faith.
There are a few other obscure places, but I donât like to promote them publicly, bc they have little traffic, or are older, or Iâd rather that AR not be aware just in case she changes her stance on fanfic (she had waged war on it in the 90s).
So that was a long answer but AO3 is probably the best if all you want is just finding fic to read, but please check out VC-Media to post your fic and have a lively discussion, itâs still thirsty for fresh blood!Â
@the-disgruntled-vc:Â I would like to participate but I donât know what I have to do.
Weâre not sure what the setup will be yet, but we appreciate your enthusiasm! Weâll post about it when weâve decided and then you can choose to participate.
@the-disgruntled-vc:Â NYC is hell in a handbasket right now. đ°
I knowwww. I left NYC on 3/17, with 2 pairs of pants and 2 tops. Iâm with my parents about 5 hours away. Wearing my dadâs clothes now :,-} Strange times.
@annabellioncourt:Â Iâm not sure I want to commit to a direct gift exchange, but if it was done as an inktober style prompt filling thing, and we could just tag it/submit it as we did it, then maybe? Iâm not sure what kind of free time Iâll have in the upcoming months as I job hunt.
Totally understandable, and I like your suggestions! We want to be able to accommodate ppl in your situation, so this is a good thing for us to keep in mind. Good luck in the job hunt! If running an awesome tumblr blog was a job, youâd be all set ;D
@amelthebravennian:Â //I would truthfully enjoy doing it!
We would love to have you back!
requiemforrose:Â Count me in. I need something to help my anxiety over the current climate
YES THATS EXACTLY THE POINT ^________^
@lestatthebiprince:Â Sign me up for the gift exchange!!
YASSSSS (letâs hope you still want to if we change the format ;D )
@pour-some-aspartame-on-me:Â I would be interested in participating in the vc secret gifts
Awesome! Would love to have you!
@desanctii:Â //Iâd be in favor. this time around I even have the time to participate ;)
We need you for those Santino prompts!Â
@amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance:Â //Count me in for the kink (obvs) XD
We love to see enthusiasm for the kin/kmeme⌠And your art is just *chefâs kiss*
@good-night-kickâs tags: #great idea :3#It would be a good chance for me to get an excuse to draw art properly⌠I havenât been drawing so much recently
Yes! We love your art and your comics and we need more of it, how can a person be so talented and so hilarious in their artwork, too?? Did you make a deal with the devil? (Sign me up.)

Apple Newton is 25 today and boy was it horrible
Image: The Indepen/REX/Shutterstock
Exactly 25 years ago, on May 29, 1992, Apple CEO John Sculley went on stage during the CES show in Chicago and launched a tablet.
If that sentence sounds all wrong, that's because a lot has changed in the quarter decade since. If you even remember Sculley as Apple CEO, you're probably thinking of the man who pushed Steve Jobs out of the company. And in the nineties, no one had tablets. And isn't CES typically held in Las Vegas?
To that we say: Yes, yes and yes. The tablet Sculley presented that year was the Newton, a device that had some potential, but essentially came out a decade and a half too early.
The Newton proved to be a flop, but its impact was huge. The product marked the beginning of a dark era for Apple, one in which the company nearly went bankrupt. Without those struggles, there's a good chance Steve Jobs doesn't return to Apple in 1997. With no Jobs back at Apple, who knows what happens to products like the iPod or iPhone.

When Jobs came back to Apple, killing the Newton was one of his first moves. Some die hard fans criticized him for the move; they thought he did it only to get even with Sculley. But how bad was Apple's first foray into tablets, or hand-held assistants, really?
Surprisingly, it was quite innovative in many ways. It had infrared networking, meaning you could beam emails and messages from it wirelessly. It had handwriting recognition. It theoretically learned from you and got better the more you used it. It came with a nifty set of productivity apps, including pretty advanced note-taking and contact apps.

But the Newton, in all its varieties (Apple released 7 models over a span of six years), was also an enormous pain to use. The data transfer was slow. The stylus-powered screen was atrociousjust look at Apple's own promotional video below and imagine doing any sort of work on that.

That handwriting recognition I mentioned was so bad it became the butt of jokes, the best-known one coming courtesy of the Simpsons.

A lot of the things that make the Newton bad from today's perspective aren't its own fault. The world simply wasn't ready for the Newton: the mobile processors weren't powerful enough, screens weren't good enough, and wireless connectivity wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today. It was much simpler to perform many of these tasks on a full-sized computer than on a Newton, portability be damned.
Luckily, Apple never gave up on the concept, and a lot of the ideas from the development of Newton made their way into the iPad.
In that light, it's hard to look at Newton as a failure; it was merely Apple's first attempt at creating a tablet. And if at first you don't succeed, well, you try again 17 years later and you create a brand new market, earning many, many millions of dollars in the process.
Using a Newton today would be a painful experience, but it's far from impossible. If you're interested in a trip down memory lane, you can still purchase a working Newton on eBay, with prices ranging from ten bucks to $1,500 for rare and limited edition units. Just don't expect it to replace your iPad in daily usage.

What's a virtual assistant? A virtual assistant (VA) offers solutions to men and women, organizations or providers, but they get the job done internet in lieu of going into an workplace.
Itâs an outstanding work-at-home possibility and one from the most cost-effective options of earning profits internet simply because it is simply just a matter of charging other people for a talent you currently have.
Being a VA (virtual assistant) is terrific simply because you just charge for a talent you presently have. CLICK TO TWEET What do virtual assistants do? The internet has produced it potential to perform a broad selection of issues remotely, or, âvirtually.â
A lot of people hear âvirtual assistanceâ and consider only of administrative duties like typing and answering emails. However the variety of duties VAs do is much more broad.
There are actually numerous services you may produce pretty much. Here is usually a partial record:
Email management Calendar management Travel arrangement Creating Ghostwriting Graphic style and design / creation World wide web style / improvement Researching Editing Tutoring Audio / video / photograph editing Consulting / counseling / coaching Bookkeeping Copywriting Marketing and advertising / Promotion Social media management Project management Customer service Transcription Programming App growth Data entry Visioneering (people send you photographs of their room/house/yard and you deliver strategies for improvement) Something else you are able to do not having getting to be during the same physical location as your client Just how much do virtual assistants make? It will depend on your ability level plus the kind of service you supply.
Tasks like data entry may fetch $10-$15 an hour, but if you've got a specialized ability or expertise, you can make $100 dollars an hour or extra.
Most VAs set their very own charges, so you are in handle. This is certainly a further cause lots of individuals are building the leap into virtual support.
How do I come to be a virtual assistant? I worked as a virtual assistant and I've employed my personal virtual assistants as well. Here are my recommendations to have started off.
1. Make your mind up in the event you will operate as an independent contractor or an worker Independent contractors are self-employed and run their very own firms. Around the other hand, some VAs desire to perform for an established company that matches VAs and customers.
Independent contractor vs. worker Not positive no matter whether you ought to get the job done for by yourself or maybe a enterprise? Right here are the benefits and drawbacks for each:
Pros of being an independent contractor
You get the job done for yourself, which means you contact all of the shots. You set your very own pricing, you select your personal clients, you may be your very own boss. Your operate hours are set entirely by you. Any capital you make goes straight for you, instead of being funneled by way of your employer who keeps a percentage. Cons of remaining an independent contractor
Operating and currently being accountable for your individual home business. Like developing any organization, this possibility requires a good deal of time, vitality and hustle. The duty rests thoroughly on your shoulders. Locating your individual consumers. This will be tricky, specifically with the beginning before you have completely happy consumers who can advise your solutions. Right here during the U.S., you're responsible to withhold and shell out your own personal earnings taxes, like Social Safety, Medicare, and so forth. Pros of getting an worker
You're only responsible for your function with the agreed on instances. Itâs a terrific condition for those who want to clock in and clock out not having owning to fret about the organization otherwise. Clientele are commonly matched with you by your employer, or, give a platform where it is quick to connect with new clients. No have to have to discover all your clients on your own. You have a built-in help procedure. A lot of providers produce resources, equipment, local community and support for his or her VAs. Cons of staying an worker
You should reply to an employer. This might mean you might have recommendations to adhere to. You could have significantly less flexible hrs depending about the customers your employer matches you with. Your pay is normally determined for you personally. You might want staying an independent contractor if:
You like networking and hustle. Youâre an entrepreneur at heart. You like having complete management. You dislike currently being an worker. You really don't need quite a lot of earnings correct away (while in the occasion it will take a whereas to create up your client listing). You could possibly desire getting an worker if:
You want staying able to clock in and clock out. Youâd rather another person come across customers and tell you when and exactly where to show up. You like clear boundaries so function does not spill in excess of into other components of one's daily life. You would like earnings suitable away and really do not have or power to âpound the pavementâ or making a small business. What about beginning at a VA business then moving out on my very own? This can be possible, nonetheless it may be difficult. You will find legal and ethical issues to take into consideration.
Most VA firms consist of clauses in their legal contracts prohibiting you from taking their clientele with you when you come to a decision to leave. One example is, you can really have to agree to not contact any of their clientele to get a specified time period. Quite simply, if you ever operate for any VA corporation and therefore are matched by using a consumer, you cannot depart that organization and motivate your consumer to employ you on your own.
Having said that, when you come to a decision to leave an organization and start your very own VA small business as an independent contractor, and find your individual clientele, this may perhaps be a choice.
2. Get a web-site This is often critical for independent contractors. Men and women require to become able to find you, so a presence over the internet is crucial. It offers you a extra professional appearance, a chance to highlight a number of your expertise and an opportunity to explain your course of action.
Use my step-by-step manual to create an internet site, or perhaps a site if you would like to frequently include articles or blog posts. (Note the publish title is âHow to start a Blogâ however the similar methods function to begin an internet site with this 1 small tweak).
Independent contractors: a must-have An employed VA: optional (but not a bad plan in situation you need to venture out by yourself later)
Be handy When you interact on social media and network with other VAs, be quite careful to not encounter as spammy. Mass emails or âcoldâ emails to people that donât know you happen to be hardly ever effective.
I recognize the need to produce an earnings, but take the time to offer you beneficial knowledge to begin with. This might possibly are available in the form of certainly valuable articles or blog posts written on your blog site, or it could are available in the type of genuinely valuable (and respectful) assistance to somebody you meet on the web.
In my situation, I casually offered some thoughts to a pal on Twitter and it turned out to become the start off of the operating partnership that lasted quite a even though. Wherever can I work like a VA? If working as an independent contractor and obtaining your own personal clientele will not be your matter, give some thought to working to get a business that matches VAs with consumers. For some VAs, the support in obtaining clientele is worth sharing the income.
Providers to take into consideration are Belay Answers (formerly eaHelp) and Upwork. Iâve personally hired VAs from each. Belay is a additional elite support with quite thorough employing and matching processes. Upwork is known as a greater platform and less complicated to join, but youâll be competing with far more VAs for the identical jobs.
Another companies to contemplate are Priority VA or Fancy Hands. I do not have private encounter with either, but have heard good things about them.

How do I come to be a virtual assistant? I worked as a virtual assistant and I have employed my own virtual assistants also. Right here are my recommendations to obtain started off.
1. Determine in the event you will operate as an independent contractor or an employee Independent contractors are self-employed and run their very own organizations. For the other hand, some VAs prefer to deliver the results for an established enterprise that matches VAs and clientele.
Independent contractor vs. worker Not certain irrespective of whether you wish to get the job done for oneself or even a corporation? Here are the advantages and disadvantages for each:
Pros of becoming an independent contractor
You work for your self, so that you phone all of the shots. You set your personal pricing, you decide on your personal consumers, you happen to be your very own boss. Your deliver the results hrs are set totally by you. Any revenue you make goes immediately for you, in lieu of remaining funneled by means of your employer who keeps a percentage. Cons of currently being an independent contractor
Working and staying responsible for your individual organization. Like setting up any company, this alternative requires a great deal of time, energy and hustle. The duty rests absolutely on your shoulders. Obtaining your own clientele. This can be tough, in particular at the starting before you have happy clientele who can encourage your companies. Right here while in the U.S., that you are accountable to withhold and shell out your individual cash flow taxes, like Social Protection, Medicare, and so on. Pros of becoming an employee
You're only responsible for your perform with the agreed on instances. Itâs a terrific condition for anyone who prefer to clock in and clock out with out having to be concerned about the enterprise otherwise. Customers are generally matched with you by your employer, or, supply a platform where itâs quick to connect with new clients. No have to have to find all of your consumers oneself. You have a built-in help program. Numerous firms produce sources, resources, community and support for his or her VAs. Cons of remaining an employee

You like networking and hustle. Youâre an entrepreneur at heart. You like owning total manage. You dislike being an employee. You really don't want a good deal of earnings correct away (while in the event it will take a when to create up your client record). You might favor currently being an employee if:
You choose being in a position to clock in and clock out. Youâd rather someone else discover consumers and tell you when and where to demonstrate up. You like clear boundaries so perform does not spill in excess of into other parts of the lifestyle. You may need revenue perfect away and do not have or vitality to âpound the pavementâ or constructing a small business. What about starting up at a VA organization then moving out on my very own? That is feasible, nevertheless it could be difficult. There are legal and ethical difficulties to contemplate.
Most VA suppliers comprise of clauses within their legal contracts prohibiting you from taking their clients with you for those who make your mind up to depart. For instance, you are going to should agree to not speak to any of their clients for any specified time frame. In other words, if you deliver the results for a VA organization and therefore are matched having a client, you can not depart that firm and encourage your consumer to hire you on your own.
However, if you determine to leave an organization and start your personal VA enterprise as an independent contractor, and locate your own personal consumers, this could possibly be a choice.
two. Obtain a web-site This is certainly essential for independent contractors. Folks have to have to be able to uncover you, so a presence around the internet is critical. It provides you with a more specialist appearance, an opportunity to highlight a few of your capabilities and a chance to describe your system.
Use my step-by-step guide to create a web site, or maybe a website if you need to on a regular basis include articles or blog posts. (Note that the post title is âHow to start a Blogâ however the exact same steps deliver the results to begin a web site with this 1 small tweak).
Independent contractors: a must-have An employed VA: optional (but not a lousy concept in case you ought to venture out by yourself later on)
Be helpful While you interact on social media and network with other VAs, be rather cautious to not run into as spammy. Mass emails or âcoldâ emails to people that really do not know you're rarely successful.
I recognize the need to have for making an cash flow, but consider the time to supply handy knowledge to begin with. This may possibly come in the type of genuinely helpful content articles written in your web site, or it could can be found in the type of genuinely handy (and respectful) recommendations to another person you meet online.
In my situation, I casually provided some concepts to a good friend on Twitter and it turned out to get the commence of the doing work romance that lasted pretty a although. Exactly where can I operate as being a VA? If doing work as an independent contractor and discovering your very own consumers just isn't your thing, look at functioning for a company that matches VAs with clientele. For some VAs, the assistance in finding clientele is really worth sharing the profits.
Providers to take into consideration are Belay Answers (formerly eaHelp) and Upwork. Iâve personally employed VAs from both. You like networking and hustle. You are an entrepreneur at heart. You like owning total management. You dislike getting an employee. You really do not will need quite a bit of cash flow correct away (from the occasion it will take a whereas to build up your consumer record). You could prefer getting an employee if:
You favor staying capable to clock in and clock out. Youâd rather another person come across clientele and tell you when and the place to display up. You like clear boundaries so operate does not spill in excess of into other parts of your daily life. You'll need earnings suitable away and donât have or vitality to âpound the pavementâ or creating a business. What about starting up at a VA business then moving out on my own? This is feasible, nevertheless it is usually tricky. There are legal and ethical concerns to consider.
Most VA organizations involve clauses in their legal contracts prohibiting you from taking their customers with you if you ever choose to leave. For instance, you'll really need to agree to not contact any of their clients to get a specified period of time. Put simply, in the event you get the job done to get a VA provider and are matched using a client, you canât depart that organization and motivate your consumer to employ you on your own.
Yet, if you make a decision to depart an organization and begin your individual VA enterprise as an independent contractor, and get your own personal clientele, this may well be an option.
two. Obtain a web site This is often necessary for independent contractors. People today have to have to become able to search out you, so a presence over the world wide web is essential. It provides you with a even more specialist visual appeal, a chance to highlight a number of your skills and an opportunity to explain your approach.
Use my step-by-step guide to set up an internet site, or a site if you want to frequently add content articles. (Note the submit title is âHow to begin a Blogâ however the very same measures function to start a web site with this a single minor tweak).
Independent contractors: a must-have An employed VA: optional (but not a lousy concept in case you desire to venture out on your own later)
Be handy As you interact on social media and network with other VAs, be rather careful not to encounter as spammy. Mass emails or âcoldâ emails to people that really don't know you're seldom productive.
I know the have to have to create an income, but consider the time for you to provide useful information and facts initial. This could possibly are available in the form of actually valuable articles written on your blog, or it might possibly can be found in the kind of genuinely handy (and respectful) suggestions to someone you meet on line.
In my case, I casually presented some suggestions to a friend on Twitter and it turned out to become the start out of the functioning romantic relationship that lasted pretty a although. Wherever can I work as a VA? If doing work as an independent contractor and choosing your own clients isn't your matter, consider operating for a corporation that matches VAs with consumers. For some VAs, the assistance in locating consumers is really worth sharing the income.
Suppliers to take into consideration are Belay Remedies (formerly eaHelp) and Upwork. Iâve personally employed VAs from each. Belay is usually a far more elite services with quite thorough hiring and matching processes. Upwork is usually a bigger platform and less complicated to join, but you will be competing with extra VAs for your similar jobs.
Another suppliers to think about are Priority VA or Fancy Hands. I really do not have personalized knowledge with both, but have heard fantastic factors about them.

How to Use Your Content Marketing Strategy to Write a Book
Joe Pulizzi said it best when he wrote, âa book is perhaps the ultimate piece of content marketing that can position you or your company as a leading expert in your industry.â
Writing and publishing a book can provide substantial value to your company. By authoring and publishing a book, your company can engage your audience on another level, generate opportunity in the form of new business and press, and cement itself as an industry leader.
Just publishing a book, though, doesnât guarantee that you achieve any of these results. It doesnât even guarantee that your book will be read by the audience you want to read it. For your company to achieve these kinds of results â the kind of results that should sound familiar to any fellow content marketer â your book needs to be guided by a strategy. Ideally, that strategy is the same one you use to direct your other content initiatives.
Ideally, your book strategy is the same as your #contentmarketing strategy, says @johnhall. Click To Tweet
My team and I worked together for years to create and consistently publish original content bylined by me as a thought leader to a variety of publications. Since we had used content to build meaningful connections with our audience and drive our company this far, we thought about what kind of impact a book guided by that same strategy could make on our content marketing goals. Thatâs when the idea to write Top of Mind was born.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: How to Match Key Metrics With Your Content Goals
Natural and valuable extension of content marketing strategy
Writing a book seemed like a natural extension of our work, and I suspect thatâs true for other companies using content marketing to engage their audiences and ready to take that work to the next level. (Think about it: The brand that âwrote the book onâ a subject is a more trusted expert than one that published an article on the topic â even a solid one.)
The brand that âwrote the book onâ a subject is a more trusted expert, says @johnhall. Click To Tweet
I use âthe next levelâ language for a reason: Youâre building on your existing content marketing program that helped you earn trust, offer value, and boost your brand with your audience. Youâre just taking the next step. Hereâs a quick look at what those previous steps did that can make your book process simpler:
Developed a solid foundation:Â A robust content marketing strategy thatâs driven results is the foundation for a book. You have an established set of goals and have created a body of published work that relies on your expertise that your audience finds valuable. A book is your companyâs chance to dive deeper and strengthen that connection.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: A Blueprint to Jump-Start Your Content Marketing Strategy
Created a trusted network and influence in your space:Â Unless youâre publishing content to a private blog that acts more like your secret diary than a tool for your marketing, your companyâs content is getting into the hands of people who find it valuable. When you actively distribute content that delivers value to your audience, your brand builds a network of advocates and influencers whom you can tap when itâs time to write, publish, and promote your companyâs book.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: An 8-Step Process to Use Influencers to Elevate Your Brand
Tested the process: You have experience in â and a proven process for â content creation. You know your own strengths and weaknesses, and your team has shown it has the know-how to produce high-quality, engaging work that benefits your company.
HANDPICKED RELATED CONTENT: How to Document Your Content Marketing Workflow
Leap from content creator to author
Though you have that foundation, that isnât to say that you can directly apply your content marketing strategy and processes for your standard blog posts or white papers to the creation of an original full-length book. Yes, your strategy and experiences in content marketing are helpful, but writing a book comes with its own set of challenges.
Consider the longest piece of content youâve ever written; for many, thatâs a white paper, research report, or something similar. I bet it clocks in between 2,500 and 4,000 words, and Iâm sure ideating, writing, and editing that content took a lot of time. A book, on the other hand, can easily land in the 50,000-word ballpark and beyond, and you could be looking at anywhere from a six-month timeline for shorter books to a year or more for longer ones.
Not only does a project of that scale take time, but it can soak up a lot of your energy and focus. It demands long-term thinking, strategy, and dedication to your end goal that more agile short-form content simply doesnât require as strongly.
Writing a book demands dedication to an end goal stronger than writing short-form content, says @johnhall. Click To Tweet
Still, if your marketing team is writing a book for your company, the strategy that guides your company content can (and should) guide your book, too. Whatever your content foundation, network, or processes look like, use those pieces to create a jumping-off point for writing a book that works within that content marketing strategy to resonate with your audience, boost your authority, and drive results for your company. Hereâs how to use your strategy to get started on a book:
Let previous content define the scope of your book
The goals behind your book are likely the same that drive your day-to-day content marketing strategy: increased opportunity, brand awareness, thought leadership, audience engagement, and more. Just as those goals give your published content a sense of direction, they also should shape your book and focus its scope.
A book gives a unique opportunity to go deeper and expand on the concepts that earned your audienceâs trust in the first place. Look at your previous content to see which articles, videos, infographics, white papers, etc., have received the best responses and generated the most substantial returns. This gives you an idea of which topics your audience members enjoy and want more of, and it lets you home in on those key areas to outline the bookâs overall theme and specific chapters.
Look at your previous #content to see which topics your audience members want more of, says @johnhall. Click To Tweet
Leverage your teamâs expertise
My book was a labor of love â not just for me, but also for my marketing team and the freelance writer we worked with. Each person on the team outlined the ideas, polished the writing, sharpened the contentâs presentation, and helped ensure that the edited bookâs content was set up to meet the goals we set. No one person could possibly have managed it all on his own. A team of experts is necessary.
Start by examining your content creation process and adapt it to a longer project like a book. Obviously, the time frame is different, but many of the general responsibilities and tasks are similar. Identify your teammatesâ capacity to handle a long-term initiative and leverage their expertise to execute it.
Examine your content creation process and adapt it to the book-writing process, advises @johnhall. Click To Tweet
Tell your peers what youâre doing
By the time you use your content marketing experience to take the next step and write a book for your company, you (hopefully) have built a strong, engaged audience and a roster of valuable industry contacts and influencers. Let them know what youâre up to.
Tell them what youâre working on, share the content when you can, and invite them to give input. They might shed light on a new way of looking at something or push back on some of your ideas, both of which will force you to improve your content. After theyâve helped you write it, they may be willing to help you promote it or even endorse it.
Donât be afraid to ask for important introductions, either. Your brand advocates, partners, and industry peers all have their own contacts â and if you land an introduction, they can connect you with agencies, publishers, and other influencers who will help your published book succeed.
The benefits of writing a book extend far beyond its initial publication. A positive reception could lead to increased industry authority, speaking engagements, fuel for future content projects, and new opportunities for your company. As a marketer with an effective content marketing strategy, youâve already established that your brandâs ideas have merit. Itâs now time to take those concepts further by turning them into a book.
Make sure your content marketing strategy implementation always improves â whether you write a book or learn from CMIâs daily newsletter. (Itâs easier to start reading the newsletter.) Subscribe today.Â

You really don't want a great deal of earnings perfect away (inside the event it requires a although to build up your client checklist). You could possibly prefer remaining an worker if:
