this is a favorite places appreciation post

yeah, the last three songs of ordinary days are incredible, but do you ever stop to think about just how pretty favorite places is? even instrumentally it's incredibly gorgeous-sounding and evokes all the right emotions, and with the lyrics it's just all the more heartfelt <3. heck, when i first listened to/watched the entire show, this song stuck out to me more than one by one by one and even don't wanna be here! which is absolutely incredible bc i could barely hear the words lmao their jason was too soft but the piano part alone is so lovely!!! also since favorite places is the only other sentimental solo ballad aside from i'll be here (and life story reprise, but that's a reprise and doesn't follow the traditional form of a musical ballad so i won't count it), it's only natural that i compare them! ibh is my fave song from the entire show and one of the best musical theatre songs in general in my opinion, but the cool thing about it is that if you listen to the song without context, it isn't very obvious that it is sad/heartwrenching bc the piano part is pretty neutral, while as for favorite places, the tone is really somewhat pensive and nostalgic which is definitely very fitting with the subject of the song. also, i really admire how it's not just one of those songs that have build up but just stay there and don't lead anywhere, no, it’s done so well. the first verse introduces the theme of longing but being unable to reach it, the second verse continues it while adding a sense of childhood nostalgia (plus the line “but here’s the twist: it can’t exist. so why do i keep thinking that it does?” HITS HARD I LOVEEE), then the bridge/third chorus explaining the point, and the ending with jason talking about claire just works so so so well! i love how the song works well on its own as well as within the context of the show! i love how it despite sounding like your average newmusicaltheatre song it still has enough substance to set it apart! i love hunter foster’s voice and delivery of this song! and i love ordinary days! pls listen to this song and to the whole show! end post <333
