Friday Exchanges no3 (Porto)

Fazemos a terceira recomendação Island Gravity de uma forma um

pouco diferente. Uma vez reunidas momentaneamente no Porto, decidimos partilhar algo que experienciamos juntas.

No sábado passado vimos no cinema Trindade o filme “Diários de Otsoga”. É um filme de Maureen Fazendeiro e de Miguel Gomes.

Na bilheteira falhou-nos o título. Parecia uma palavra japonesa, algo difícil de pronunciar e distante. Mais tarde, durante o filme, iluminada pela sabedoria da lua cheia, a Pietra descobriu que Otsoga era de facto Agosto escrito ao contrário.

O filme acontece numa cronologia inversa em que o início é na verdade o fim. O que parece o foco inicial nas três personagens principais, mais tarde afasta-se para deixar entrar em cena todo o espaço de rodagem e a equipa técnica.

Como num puzzle, as peças vão-se encaixando capítulo a capítulo ou dia após dia (porque como num diário, o filme se divide em dias).

É uma contemplação do tempo, um registo das interações humanas que se desenvolvem num espaço restrito: numa referência direta ao confinamento e ilustra os momentos tensos/conflituosos, hilariantes e surreais provocados pelo tempo de pausa e afastamento da sociedade.

This third Friday Exchange we are doing things a little bit different. As we are momentarily reunited in Porto we opted to share something we experienced together.

Last Saturday, we went to Cinema Trindade to watch ‘Otsoga Diaries’. It is a film by Maureen Fazendeiro and Miguel Gomes.

At the ticket office we couldn’t say the title properly. It sounded like a Japanese word, something foreign and difficult to pronounce. Later in the film, enlightened by the full moon, Pietra realised it was simply the word “Agosto” (August) spelled backwards.

The film follows an inverse chronology, where the beginning is actually the end. What seems to be the initial focus on the three main characters, later diverts to the whole of the shooting crew and the surrounding space.

Like a puzzle, the pieces start to come together, chapter by chapter or day by day (because as in a diary, the film is structured by days).

It is a contemplation of time and an exploration of human interactions in a restricted environment: a direct reference to lockdown times, depicting their tense, hilarious and surreal moments.
