So @surocious recently visited Tawang on a 5-day trip and shared her experience of the gruelling trek to the landscape. There were times when she wanted to give up and return, but did not; which brings me to the times when I had doubts too. On my trip to the Malabar and Konkan coast, I looked at the heights and slopes and wondered if I can do it. I was at the shittiest of roads thinking if I'll make it. I remember when the Sun shone bright on us and the gravel had torn through our skin but we kept going. We returned from Mullayanagiri peak to leave for Udupi, our next stop. One last look at the magnificent view and we were back on the road. The bags were packed and so was I, inside the multipurpose jacket, except for the legs. A big mistake, I understood later in the night. It wasn't the chill. We arrived in Udupi late in the night. It took us quite some time to reach Baba's home. Outside the town of Manipal, Baba has been living in a time capsule for years, although having been travelled a lot. His is a toyhouse in the middle of a sprawling lawn. Very different from our falsely spacious BHKs, it is single-storey with a terracotta tiled-roof and a courtyard. The next morning, while discussing the good old days and how globalization has changed the world over a cup of Baba's favorite lemongrass tea, I notice that he still lives in the 90s - The time when a romance and a 'parallel' landline connection was a curse, when we struggled yet relished to save money for lozenges, when we could comfortably fit in front of the seat of our fathers' scooter, and when Ma would hold our faces to comb our hair. As I sat listening to the conversation and lulled myself to sleep, a fish hawker honked by, a sparrow chirped, and the bell at the porch jingled. I remember lighting up a J (for the lack of a birthday candle) at the beach and then riding back to our dwelling. A blind alley gave way to two cops. Before we could scoot to the other side, one of them signaled and we obeyed. 10 seconds into the conversation, he has his hands inside @shaggia s pockets and draws out the J's butt. By now I am totally relaxed and mentally calculating the expense of the rest of the trip sans 10 grand. On being asked what it was, Sammy conveniently answers 'American tobacco'. I am leaning on to a wall, arms crossed, waiting for all this to get over and then head for the closest ATM when... The cop sniffs the butt 😂 and offers it to his subordinate. They exchange looks. Sammy reaffirms 'American tobacco, Sir'. And you know what? They buy it. This was on the way to Goa. I always wondered that after all these years of popularity and commercialization, Goa must have changed for the worse and that I would certainly not encounter the essence of the paradise. How wrong I was to be in a couple of hours! At this point into out journey, I was least bothered about the tan or the dust. Semi-wet from the beach at Gokarna, we hopped on to leave for another one. I woke up at 4am today. I could hear voices in the living room (I live in a community space). With sleep brimming from my eyes, I hunt for my phone to check the time. I scroll through Instagram and come across this post. It wants to go on a road trip someday, explore places, sleep in a car, visit museums, run in a forest, chase the fog, chase the Sun, be alive... With sleep brimming from my eyes, I know I have been there - chasing fogs, sunsets, and sunrises; singing my favorite song out loud on a drive; sleeping in a car and on a bike; running on roads, streets, and forests alike; stopping a lot to admire the view; kissing on roads askew; making memories and love; being alive... There's something about this place. Even if you arrive a skeptic, Goa will turn you into a believer, or maybe it was just me. We reached Palolem, shacked up at the beach, drove around the town, and soaked in all that there was. Cops are negligent, ladies are pretty, kids are pesky, and the crowd a little husky from last night's party. The water isn't coarse, the beach not too crowded - Palolem was a good choice. Another good pick was Cola beach. Oh, how much I'll always love @maal_wee_kaa for this! Cola is sparsely populated and a little rougher than the regular beaches. At a distance to Palolem, the left turn to Cola is easy to miss. A bit of off-roading, a flight of stairs, and you are there! Separated by a narrow strip of sand, a freshwater lagoon curls away from the sea, still and sparkling.
