Today we left for Larissa stopping en route in the up and coming wine region of Naoussa. One of our participants had met George Diamantakos at a trade tasting in California and that encounter led to today’s visit.

It was a challenge for the bus to get down the narrow dirt road but once there we had a unique winery visit. Diamantakos only makes about 24,000 bottles yearly but he has become an ambassador for this area. He invited 3 other local winemakers to join us so we had the opportunity to taste some great examples of wines from this area: Ximomavro by Foundi Winery Blanc de Noir 2016- this is the local red indigenous grape variety and the wine had good acidity; Diamantakos Preknadi 2016- this is a nearly extinct local grape variety that this winery is trying valiantly to revive; Foundi Naoussea Xinomavro 2012; Foundi Estate Xinomavro 2011, from a single vineyard, with 1 year barrel aging, presented by winemaker Georgia Foundi; Kir-Janni Raminista 2015 Xinomavro, from a single vineyard, the largest producer in Naoussa with 1 million bottles yearly (Xinomavro in Greek means sour black); Kir Yanni Yianakohori

George Diamantakos

Hills, a blend of Xinomavro 50%, Merlot 30% and Syrah 20%; Kir Yanni Diaporos 2015 single vineyard- this grape and especially this wine has affinities with Piedmont’s Nebbiolo with light garnet color and good tannins; Apostolos Thymiopoulos Naoussa Earth and Sky 2016; Apostolos Thymiopoulos Alta 2015 Single vineyard, a light clear red, very nebbiolo-like, with violets and dark berry aromas, great acidity and soft tannins-this was my favorite wine, from a winery producing 500,000 bottles.

The good news is that all these wineries, large and small,export to the US.
