MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel: Kiera and Garza trade lines twice.
Female Characters:
Kiera Cameron (OTL)
Emily
Jacqueline
Jasmine Garza
Diana Bolton
Male Characters:
Brad Tonkin (Green 2038)
Marcelus
Alec Saddler (Red)
Alec Saddler (Green)
Matthew Kellog (OTL/Green)
Carlos Fonnegra
Jason
Travis Verta
Lucas Ingram
The Traveler
Other Notes:
I still do not at all understand how Kiera and Brad got to be romantic or what the writers are trying to achieve. They kiss this episode, and it’s just baffling. More on this in the season review.
The shot of Kiera, Garza, and Travis dropping their opponents at the same time is really cool.
Honestly, just seeing Kiera seek out Liber8 to work with them in general is really cool.
Carlos has apparently taken over for Dillon, making him the Commissioner Gordon to Kiera’s...well, she’s not quite sure.
Insofar as this episode was a long time coming, it feels extremely satisfying: finally Kiera takes a stand against allowing her future (or Brad’s equally bad one) from occurring, which means that she (and consequently, the show) are explicitly admitting that Liber8 had the right idea all along. Seeing them team up to work against Green Timeline Alec is a series highlight.
And yet, the episode isn’t as exciting as it could be. Part of it is because having (almost) everyone on the same page prevents the series from using one of the better weapons in its storytelling arsenal, which is the multiplicity of diverging, but justified opinions. Part of it is because Brad Tonkin, while a sensible addition on paper, still fits uncomfortably in the overall ensemble (fortunately, he’s away for most of the episode). As always, the series manages to be good, competent, sensible...but not mind-blowing.

Continuum s03e05 ’30 Minutes to Air’
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
Yes, once.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
Ten (47.6%).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Eleven (52.4%).
Positive Content Rating:
Three.
General Episode Quality:
Great.
MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel: Catherine and Kiera talk about what family means to a freelancer, Liber8, and the thing behind the door. Tio and her mother have several conservations that would pass except for the fact that the latter isn’t named on-screen (credits list her as Alyssa).
Female Characters:
Tio
Christine Dillon
Kiera Cameron (OTL)
Catherine
Betty Robertson
Nora Harris
Nicole
Diana Bolton
Emily
Jasmine Garza
Male Characters:
Travis Verta (OTL / Green)
Carlos Fonnegra
Curtis Chen
Inspector Jack Dillon
Alec Saddler (Green)
Matthew Kellog
Nigel
Bradley
Lucas Ingram
Alec Saddler (Red)
Benedict
Other Notes:
Travis is a daddy! And also a would-be committed partner to the mother of his child. That’s real interesting, given Sonya.
Dillon is also a daddy! We get to meet his daughter and (ex?)wife this episode, and they’re real interesting.
The VPD is being very cavalier about Betty’s safety. No me gusta.
It’s interesting, given last episode, how Carlos reminds Kiera that there are no VIPs in hostage situations, and that no one hostage should be given priority over another.
Alec (Green) is driving away everyone with a quickness. It won’t end well for him, probably.
This episode’s evil corporation is Fermitas, which deals with weapons, corporate espionage and secretly buying TV stations, and is perfectly happy to have hostages killed in order to protect its secrets. As always, that sounds about right.
While I would not have considered Continuum to be a competence porn series, this season has a had a lot of characters being good at their job, and this episode more than most.
The CPS agent in the futureback (TM @arbitrarygreay) scenes is super-creepy. Him calling Tio a patriot for selling out Travis? Ugh!
Dillon and Travis are not two characters I would have thought were similar, but this episode makes a good case for that argument, even without gilding the lily by making them both estranged parents whose relationships with their daughters are warmer than they appear. It’s a bit too much, but given all the interesting storytelling avenues it opens for Dillon (less so Travis, given that his family is inaccessible), I’m not complaining.

Continuum s03e08 ’So Do Our Minutes Hasten’
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
Yes, six times.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
Seven (43.75%).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Nine (56.25%).
Positive Content Rating:
Three.
General Episode Quality:
I don’t like it.
MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel: Kiera passes with her mom when the CPS busts a meeting the latter’s attending. Kiera and Betty talk about trust, and Betty’s loyalties. Diana interviews Adele at length. Jasmine confronts Kiera. Betty and Kiera discuss a Liber8 message, about their loyalties. They speak again about the same topics.
Female Characters:
Kiera Cameron (OTL)
Samantha
Diana Bolton
Rita
Betty Robertson
Jasmine Garza
Adele Mason
Male Characters:
Inspector Jack Dillon
Julian Randol
Curtis Chen
Alec Saddler (Green)
Carlos Fonnegra
Jason
Matthew Kellog
Elton Bibby
Neelon
Other Notes:
Yay, Kiera’s mom! I have to say, she and Kiera’s sister are much more interesting family members than Greg or Sam, in part because they have far more bearing on who Kiera is and how she became who she was at the start of the series.
The scene between Curtis and Kellog doesn’t add much to the episode’s plot, but I like seeing the two characters reconnect, as well as the reminder of how things ended between the two.
I disliked it when Carlos slept with a person of interest in a case he was working on back in the first season, and I dislike it here as well, even if it is because of a honey trap. You can just date, Carlos!
That said, on balance, I like his story and the way it intersects with Kiera’s and the larger plot thread of corporations growing bolder in their actions.
As superscience which will inevitably go wrong goes, Halo (or is it HALO?), which is essentially a souped-up Fitbit, seems weirdly innocuous—more so than ARC, last season, anyway.
This one’s odd. At first, it seems like it’s parallel investigations—Kiera and Dillon’s into the deaths at Fermitas and Carlos’ into Sonmanto whistleblower Adele Mason are unrelated, which makes the latter story somewhat disappointing—Continuum isn’t interested in sex much, but when it does, and specifically in the context of Carlos, it’s often unpleasant (also, frustratingly, kinda hot). The situation is a lot more nuanced than that, it turns out, but the sour taste lingers, even as the two stories converge in really interesting ways. And then there’s the ending.
Taken as a whole, there’s a lot to like about this episode—Dillon and Julian facing off on television, an exploration of the morality of whistleblowing, the continuing evolution of Kiera’s perspective, everything with Garza. However, there are key elements that prevent it from being as enjoyable as one wishes it to be.

Continuum s03e04 ‘A Minute Changes Everything’
Does it pass the Bechdel Test?
Yes, three times.
How many female characters (with names and lines) are there?
Eight (40%).
How many male characters (with names and lines) are there?
Ten (60%).
Positive Content Rating:
Three.
General Episode Quality:
A bit too complicated for its own good.
MORE INFO (and potential spoilers) UNDER THE CUT:
Passing the Bechdel: Kiera passes with Callista as she attempts to rescue her and Jiliani. Kiera passes with Rebecca. Nora gives Kiera some advice.
Female Characters:
Kiera Cameron (OTL)
Callista Berringer
Betty Robertson
Emily
Jacqueline
Rebecca Barton
Diana Bolton
Nora Harris
Male Characters:
Carlos Fonnegra
Julian Randol
Inspector Jack Dillon
Alec Saddler (Green)
Duncan Federaux
Sil Belcose
Cantor
Matthew Kellog
PJ Batista
Alec Saddler (Red)
Other Notes:
Kiera’s stint in the CPS occasionally had her playing firefighter. More notably, her decision to prioritize kids over a corporate bigwig ends with her being disciplined in the form of additional life debt.
Let’s move along alert: despite his role in Lucas’ shenanigans last season, Julian is once again a free man, thanks to Carlos.
Between Kiera almost choking Rebecca to death and Carlos occasionally visiting “his” Kiera’s corpse and talking to her, it is not a great week for our favorite cop duo.
For all that Betty’s punishment makes tactical sense, and is arguably way lighter than is merited, given her contributions to Liber8, it is still horrifying.
Heeeey, Nora.
The two Alecs are being played as almost entirely different characters. Given their points of divergence, the show just about manages to sell it.
On that note, it is extremely interesting to see Carlos, who in the red timeline resigned rather than take part in Dillon’s proto-CPS, double down on his loyalty to the VPD in this timeline.
Oh my God, Kiera may finally be questioning her deepest preconceptions about the system she’s been brought up to believe in . It’s about time.
For an episode with no Liber8 members who aren’t Kellog, the group sure is at the center of things, which is how it should be. And while the details of the plot—involving the deaths of several college students at a Liber8-inspired protest—are too hard to follow by half, the ideas behind it aren’t. Things are getting especially morally sticky, which is just the way I like it.
