Diamond Clarity
Diamonds are formed deep within the earth, under extreme heat and pressure. Clarity refers to the tiny, natural imperfections that that are present in all but the rarest diamonds. Gemologists name these imperfections by technical names, including blemishes and inclusions. The less inclusions, the better the clarity.
FL: Flawless - No inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10x magnification.
IF: Internally Flawless: No inclusions, only blemishes are visible to a skilled grader using 10x magnification.
VVS1-VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification.
VS1-VS2: Very Slightly Included: Inclusions are clearly visible under 10x magnification but can be characterized as minor.
Sl1-Sl2: Slightly Included: Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader using 10x magnification.
I1-I3: Included: Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance.

Diamond Certification – Mavilo Fine Jewelry
A diamond certificate, also called a diamond grading report or diamond quality document, is a report created by a team of gemologists. The diamond is evaluated, measured, and scrutinized using trained eyes, a jeweler’s loupe, a microscope, and other industry tools. A completed certificate includes an analysis of the diamond’s dimensions, clarity, color, polish, symmetry, and other characteristics. Many round diamonds will also include a cut grade on the report.

Diamond Certification
A certificate is an independent quality report on a specific diamond. It is issued by a diamond grading laboratory with no affiliation to any retail outlet, giving the consumer a completely objective opinion on the diamond’s quality. The certificate includes the exact measurements, proportions, color grade, clarity grade, cut grade and carat weight of the diamond. It also includes specifics that most jewelers do not have the equipment or the knowledge to determine, such as the diamond’s fluorescence, polish, and symmetry. Each certificate is numbered, dated, and illustrates the internal and external characteristics of the diamond.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF DIAMONDS
Very simple in composition: C carbon---99.95%. Diamond is the only inorganic gemstone that consists of only one element Chemically it’s simple carbon. Its crystal form gives it three desirable optical properties:
Hardest gemstone known to man. Diamond’s hardness enables it to accept a higher polish than any other gemstone, thereby making it more brilliant than any other gemstone.
Melting point is 6,900 degrees F -4,000 degrees C – 2 1/2 times the melting point of steel.
Does not undergo thermal expansion (water to ice).
Four times more reflective than glass.

Jewelry Buying Guide
There are three main points to think about before stepping foot in a jewelry store.
#1: Budget. One of the many fantastic aspects of diamond jewelry is they come in all sizes and prices ranges. From a few hundred dollars to several thousand, you will undoubtedly be able to find some within your budget. It’s a good idea to think about how much you want to spend. Set a range that you would like to stay in, and look at earrings in that area.
#2: Quality. Diamond jewelry are measured and priced as per the four C’s: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat weight. The good news about diamond jewelry is that, typically, you can purchase stones that are not as high quality as rings demand, so you can get more size for your money.
#3: Size Do you want bold and large, small and dainty, or somewhere in between? Size combined with quality primarily controls the cost, so it’s important to set a range with each component. That way, when it’s time to shop, you will be able to stay within budget while still ending up with earrings that delight and dazzle you.

Diamond Guide - Facts About Diamonds
The Diamond is the hardest natural substance found on the Earth and incredibly it is the only Gemstone made of just one element – Carbon. Read some more interesting facts about Diamonds…
Diamond is the hardest natural substance found on Earth.
Incredibly, diamond is the only gemstone made of just one element - carbon.
Most diamonds, found in nature, were formed 1 to 3 billion years ago due to extreme heat and pressure. These diamonds were formed 100 to 200 miles below the surface of Earth. Volcanic activity brings diamond crystals much closer to the earth's surface.
A rough diamond looks so much like a pebble that most people would pass it by without a second glance.
The Diamond is the most effective heat conducting material, which expands very little when subjected to high temperatures, unlike most other conducting materials.
In order to burn a diamond, it must be heated on more than a thousand degree Fahrenheit and it will simply vanish, without leaving ash. Only a little carbon dioxide will be released.
However, many people expect a diamond to be unbreakable. This is not true. A diamond's crystal structure has 'hard' and 'soft' directions. A blow of sufficient force, in an exact direction, can crack, chip, split or even shatter a diamond.
Diamonds were first mined in India over 2,800 years ago.
It is estimated that only 500 tons of diamonds have ever been mined in recorded history to date.
More than 250 tons of ore need to be blasted, crushed and processed to produce just one carat of rough diamond.

Diamond Carat Weight
Diamonds are weighed in units called carats. The word carat derives from the word carob, a Mediterranean seed, which has an extremely consistent weight for measuring. Five metric carats weighs exactly 1 gram. Even if your budget is not incredibly large, there are more than enough options for you to consider. Keep in mind that bigger is not always necessarily better. We at Luisa Graff Jewelers can help you classify the proper cut, color and clarity to fit your budget and to fit your jewelry beautifully.

Fun Facts about Diamonds
Diamonds were formed billions of years ago, 75 to 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface. But it does not necessarily take that long for a diamond to form. It can happen much faster as long as the conditions are right. It takes intense pressure and temperatures of 2000º –3000º F to create a diamond.
The first written mention of diamonds dates to approximately 500 BC.
Only one of every five diamonds found in nature is of gem quality. The rest are typically used in industrial settings.
Only one finished diamond out one thousand weighs over one carat.
If you have a house fire, your diamonds will probably survive unscathed. To burn a diamond, it must be heated to 1292° F. A house fire typically reaches just 1100° F.
Red and green are the rarest fancy colored diamonds. Diamonds in their purest state are clear.
Carob tree seeds were used for centuries as a measuring tool for weighing precious stones. The word carob eventually evolved into the word “carat”.
The Cullinan diamond is the largest rough diamond ever found. It is 3,106 carats in size and weighs 2.8 pounds.
Until the 18th century, the only diamond mines were in India.
Diamonds weren’t discovered in North American until the 1840s.
Today, Russia mines more diamonds than any other country in the world.
The U.S. produces almost no diamonds, but purchases more diamonds than any other country – more than 40 percent of the world’s gem qual.
