Diablero is a genre show with a Mexican cast, an indigenous lead actor, and is filmed in Mexico. It's got demons, wild supernatural shit, and mixes in Mexican lore and religion. It's a Netflix original that has been renewed for a second season. I swear if y'all let this show flop I will go feral.

I started watching Diableros on Netflix and now I can’t stop. I’m in love with this show you guys.

So like, imagine Supernatural, but it didn’t take itself so seriously, and has an all-Mexican cast. There’s 4 main characters, half of them are female, and it’s got a serious found-family vibe to it. I’m only on episode 5 rn, but I’m in LOVE and I’m def gonna do fanart of it at some point. 

It’s only one season, and idk if they’re gonna make another, but if you’re into light-hearted comedy, found families, and demon-hunting, maybe check it out?

Just finished Diablero. It's about a priest who joins a demon hunter in search of a kidnapped girl. The show is in Spanish but the English dub for voice/caption is available. Elvis (The Diablero) is funny, loves to drink and even though he has alot of charm, he's a jerk too. The rest of the cast are enjoyable. Love the effects, some of them are cheesy. I would classify it as a horror comedy. If you like supernatural/folklore and demon hunting, this is the show for you.

Super Short Reviews: winter tv part three (and last) 2019:

Perfume (Netflix) – Germany.   Another knock out murder mystery from Germany, this one is so dark its similar to the Swedish mysteries.  Strong ensemble cast; its clear from the beginning that the disturbing murder is only scratching the surface of many more bad deeds of the past.  Naughty naughty!

Informer (Amazon) – UK.  Paddy Constantine is as loveable as ever as a CI handler who waffles between looking grumpy and lost.  His partner looks like a child who cant decide which is more surprising – that she’s an actor at all, or that she was cast on a show about terrorists.  But the star here is Nabhaan Rizwan with his dreamy leading man eyes and biting street smart wit.  He makes this show.  Werk!!

Diablero (Netlix) – Mexico.  The priest looks like Michael Buble which I found exceptionally amusing and distracting. I couldn’t tell from the first 2 episodes if the actors just hadn’t settled into their demon hunting roles yet, or the director couldn’t decide what style he was going for.  If they land in the B-movie horror camp I think people could enjoy it.

Deadly Class (SyFy) – Based on the graphic novel.  I especially dig the 80s music and the Henry Rollins.  You don’t have to be a teeneager to enjoy this – since it takes place during the Regan administration rule, Gen-x viewers will likely get way more of the references than Gen-z. Benedict Wong has great fun as the principal of this school for assassins and Lara Condor is a gem as his star pupil.  She even wears a Bad Religion t-shirt in one episode.  It was not an historically correct t-shirt but hey at least they tried.

Wayne (YouTube) – 16 year old me would have been OBSESSED with this show, so if you fall into that age group please enjoy the crap out of it for me.  This kid makes more trouble in the first episode than most kids do their entire lives. Also anything that makes fun of Southies is great by me.  Funny, sad, dark, and awesome -- and huge props to Mark McKenna who takes on the dialect like a native.  (And he was also in one of my favourite movie ever Sing Street!! blatant plug)

Selection Day (Netflix) – India.  I don’t understand cricket so it took me a minute to get into this... but when the two boys (played by Mohammed Samad and Yash Dhohle) get to stretch their emotional wings my heart was bowled into rooting for them. (Lame attempt at a cricket pun.)  Plus who doesn’t love a little magical realism?

The Other Two (Comedy Central) – I laughed.  Its a send up of childhood overnight youtube stardom, and crazy people in loveable but crazy New York.   Plus Molly Shannon and Ken Marino -- Who doesnt love those two crazies?

Demon’s Path  (Netflix) – Hong Kong.  You know when you were in junior high / high school and you made bad home movies with people that couldn’t really act and dialogue that wasn’t really good?  This is a lot like that.  How is a 16 year old on the police force?  Its impossible to make a supernatural story line work with goofy acting … but maybe Hong Kong, like Korea, doesn’t consider this goofy acting. Maybe they think all our shows are goofy acting.  I dunno.

Black Earth Rising (Netflix) – UK. This is super heavy.  You’ve got the Rwandan genocide, the war in the Congo, a big trial at the Hague, and some mysterious events of the past that John Goodman knows but will never tell.  Bonus: Harriet Walter!

Four More Shots Please (Amazon) – India.  These people are actually speaking English most of the time but if you’re like me you’ll need to turn the subtitles on. Plot:  Four plucky young women traverse life and love (or at least sex) in Mumbai. Style: It’s not quite SATC but there is a dance number!!  (duh its Mumbai!)

Justice (Netflix) – UAE.  The genre is legal procedural.  But the style is almost soap opera.  And the music is all over the place.  Confusing.  Still, Fatima Al Taei makes a strong case (pun intended) for herself as a young, intelligent, female lead, and the stories highlight the complex struggles between traditionalism and modernism.  Netflix’ first Emirati show.  

Sex Education (Netflix) – UK. Tempting to describe this using only emojis (ha ha ha!)  But seriously, Asa Butterfield has grown up to be the awkward-ish high school son to Gillian Anderson’s single sex therapist mother. Sooooooo fun to see Gillian in a comedic role!! (and a mod haircut to boot.)  Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa shine as the best friends ready to drive or support any potentially comedic ‘therapy.’

Sydney to the Max (Disney) – Yay Caroline Rhea!  Another one for the teeny boppers; this show centers on the cute juxtaposition of a girl in seventh grade and her dad’s memories of the same grade in 1992.  The girl acts waaaaaay younger than my seventh grader, but hey, maybe these people live in some nice hubba bubblea suburb.  

Kingdom (Netflix) – Korea.  Visually beautiful –  a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld.  Government factions fight each other – a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld.  Beautful people do monstrous things – a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld.   But how you know that its NOT the Japan episode of Westworld is howwwwww slooooooooow eeeeeeveryyyyyyone iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.  I wonder if Koreans think everyone on our shows talk way too quickly.  

I Am The Night (TNT) – actually a mini-series but I’m throwing it in here anyway  cuz I enjoyed it. Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine reunite to tell a story (mostly fictional) of the real Fauna Hodel and the really bizarre people she meets as she tries to discover who her real family is.  I loved the 1960s detailed pictures (shot on Kodak film) of Los Angeles and  India Eisley is great in her wounded kitten portrayal of Fauna.

The new Goth girl, Armanda is her name, she was in my AP Bio class last year I got interested in her when I heard her name because I thought she too was the child of a fan of vampire horror erotica. Turns out she was named after Armanda Degli Abbati and not The Vampire Armand AKA Amadeo AKA Andrei. So my pickup lines based on shared life experience of being named after one half of a couple with so few brain cells they decided to take their vampire asses to live in Miami didn’t work out. It’s OK though, cause we’re still hooking up and she knows so many things about the world like she’s always reading and her mom’s a screenwriter so any time we watch a horror movie she knows all these cool facts. She’s just really chill and it’s so easy to hang out with her. 

I’m still not sure what I’m going to do about my eyebrow. I thought piercings were supposed to close, it’s not closing. Do I have to show up at the country club with this on me?

I’m trying!!! I told Summer in 2020 I want our baby to be born, in 2020 I want to physically hold my baby in my arms. She said OK, we can start trying in the summer of 2019. Obviously, I can’t pick and choose if it’s a girl or not but there are a few tips and tricks online based on old wives tales for increasing your chances of having a boy or a girl and you best believe that I will be doing all of them that I can (and so will Summer) to ensure I have a daughter. 

And if it’s a boy that’s perfect because I’m going to love my baby no matter what. Plus, Summer and I agreed on four kids, what are the odds of them being all boys?….I really hope the odds aren’t high on that.

Colette is still the most precious and cutest baby in the whole entire world!!! Even though she’s not really a baby anymore because she’s going to be two in three weeks!!! She’s going to be a whole toddler!!!

But still an angel!! Even if the only thing she did today was lounge around in her robe and eat pink Cheerios straight out of the box while watching Peppa Pig. She didn’t even want any milk to go along with it. It was straight Cheerios except for when I ordered boba and she snatched her rose milk boba and went straight back to her Peppa Pig. If you tried to get her to do anything else, she gave you her Coco glare and you walked away. 

She’s becoming more aware of her power and the world isn’t ready for it.

I’ve watched Diablero twice through and I really enjoy it! It’s the urban fantasy Mexican buddy cop show I never knew I needed. Much better than that Supernatural show Micah tried to get me to watch. 

I hope Son Hee and Elvis give us a good bellieregent sexual tension coupling and that Netflix doesn’t break my heart with this show like they did with so many others. I’m already fearing for Siemper Bruja and it hasn’t even aired yet.

Netflix is building on its reputation for Christmas cheer with a sleigh full of new holiday-themed TV episodes. Among the offerings are special editions of the baking show “Nailed It!,” anime series “Neo Yokio” and preschool kids adventure “Super Monsters,” all due on Dec. 7. The platform will deliver a winter solstice episode of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and a special for “Prince of Peoria” on Dec. 14.

Christmas is happening on Crave in a big way this month, too, as the service formerly known as CraveTV merges its selection with the cable channel formerly known as The Movie Network. Everything Coming to Netflix Canada in December

Dumplin’

A Southern feel good beauty pageant flick set is exactly what the winter season called for. Adapted from Julie Murphy’s best-selling book of the same title, Dumplin’ stars Jennifer Aniston as the pageant-obsessed mother of Dolly Parton–obsessed Willowdean, played by Patti Cake$’ breakout Danielle Macdonald. When Willodean stages a protest and enters her mother’s teen pageant, other plus-size contenders follow—to which Willodean respond,  “I’m not the Joan of Arc of fat girls.” Here’s hoping Dumplin’ sets Netflix on the road to redemption after the whole Insatiable disaster.

Tidelands: Season 1

Think Twilight meets Revenge — but with mermaids. That’s not how Netflix is describing this Australian Original Series, but it seems to hit the mark. The description they’ve shared is fairly vague: “Tidelands follows Cal McTeer (Charlotte Best), a young woman who returns home to the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay after ten years in juvenile detention. But her hometown is shrouded in mysteries, the greatest of which is the commune of outcasts who live in a hidden pocket of the bay.” And obviously, the entire cast is gorgeous. It sounds like the perfect soapy supernatural drama to binge-watch over the holidays.

I had my hands cupped over my mouth for the duration of this 3-minute trailer. Which means that, as a noted hater of bone-chilling post-apocalyptic films, I probably won’t be watching this. But hey, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! The Sandra Bullock-lead thriller mirrors of the sense-driven monster sentiment of John Krasinski’s ‘s A Quiet Place, but instead of having to keep silent, Bullock has to blindfold her small children. Here’s how Netflix describes Birdbox: “When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life.”

Just finished Diablero. It's about a priest who joins a demon hunter in search of a kidnapped girl. The show is in Spanish but the English dub for voice/caption is available. Elvis (The Diablero) is funny, loves to drink and even though he has alot of charm, he's a jerk too. The rest of the cast are enjoyable. Love the effects, some of them are cheesy. I would classify it as a horror comedy. If you like supernatural/folklore and demon hunting, this is the show for you.
