Hermione watched as a carriage passed by the shop. The bustling Eldenshire street was humming with those fetching their Yulemas presents for loved ones. So many faces. So many eyes that knew too much and nothing at all.

A light hearted laugh from behind her shook her from her gazing. Hermione turned to find her sister in-law smiling at Mr. Potter.

Hermione watched them. They were standing at a respectable distance, but the blush on her cheeks and the slight inward lean of his stance suggests their mutual interest. Hermione felt a twist deep in her chest. Something green and ugly. She swallowed and ran her hands down her dress skirt before walking towards them.

“Hello, Mr. Potter. Ginny.” She gave her best grin to the pair.

“Oh, Hermione! How lovely to see you.” Ginny touched a gloved hand to her own. “It’s been too long. You and Ron must come to the house for dinner tonight.”

Hermione’s heart fell to her feet. “Tonight?”

“Yes, mother would love to see you two.” Ginny then turned, “Mr. Potter, my brother would be delighted if you joined us as well. That is if you aren’t too busy.” She looked up at him through her lashes and Hermione thinks Mr. Potter stopped breathing.

“I’d be delighted.” His voice was so openly breathy. So uncaring if anyone noticed he was smitten.

“Well, I really must be going. It was wonderful to run into you both. Ron will be so glad to see everyone this evening.” She tipped her chin down and walked out onto the side street.

Hermione just began moving forward. Moving moving moving. One foot after the other. One breath in. One breath out.

This was so silly. She felt ridiculous for being so out of sorts. So what if she didn’t see him tonight? She could go and socialize with her family and enjoy herself. She could help Molly set the table and play with the children. She could be sweet and pleasant. She could be a good wife.

A good wife. A wife. A wife to Ronald Weasly. She was Mrs. Weasly. She was sworn to him. She was tied to him indefinitely. She would never be free of the vow she made.

Her lungs felt tight. The wind burned her cheeks. Her whole body was heavy with the burden of her sins.

Hermione stopped abruptly, realizing she was no longer in the crowded town center, but at a cemetery.

And then a flash of blond appeared in her periphery.

She squeezed her eyes shut and took in a ragged breath. Why, of all places, would she come here? She hadn’t even noticed where she was headed.

He always comes here on Sunday. It was his mother’s day. He never missed a week.

She can’t believe she came here. She refused to look at him.

Hermione was a wife. A good wife.

She turned around without a sound and set for the stone house on the hill.

She was almost to her picket fence when she heard,

“Don’t go in, Granger.”

She almost tripped over her feet. She whipped around to find Lord Malfoy looking at her with a pained expression.

“You need to leave,” Hermione said in a low whisper. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“Don’t go in.”

Hermione looked from him to the ground. The once green grass was now dull and lifeless. “Please, Lord Malfoy. I cannot… I cannot continue this anymore. Ron has done nothing to deserve this betrayal.”

“And you have done nothing to deserve the denial of your heart’s desire.”

His gray eyes were burning holes into her. Hermione ached to touch him. To breathe him in. She knew right then that she was forever tarnished by the wake of him.

She opened her mouth to say something, but couldn’t bring herself to deny him again. She forced herself to turn away and head to her doorstep.

She got only a couple steps before a hand closed around her arm and she was apparated behind her home.

“Draco,” she hissed. “This is irresponsible! This is—“

His lips molded into hers. All of the fight left her instantaneously. Hermione brought her hands up to his hair, reveling in how he groaned at the touch.

The stone wall dug into her back.

His hands were cold as he held her jaw, pushing them impossibly closer, the force of it almost painful.

He had rooted himself deep into her. His vines found a home in places Hermione hadn’t even known existed until he touched it.

“You were mine first,” he rasped. “You were mine first and he cannot just have you. You are not his to want.”

“I’m yours. I’m yours, Draco. I always will be.”

He crashed back into her.

Ivy scratched the base of her neck as they claimed one another in secret.

I’ve just completed your most recent chapter and what a delight it was from start to finish. The slow burn continues to be delicious, and you’re doing an amazing job of gradually adding bits of kindling to the flames to keep DHr’s relationship progressing (and to feed us readers). This most recent chapter was a textbook definition of fic that gets me giggling and kicking my feet.

I’m always amused by our sweet Victorian child Draco’s reaction to sex, and the reference again to sheets and friction sent me. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time Draco has been nearly undone by his bedding, and it got me thinking about Pureblood culture’s views of sex and intimacy.

I know oftentimes in fanon, we tend to get Slytherin sex god/goddesses who are having their first sexual experiences pretty early, though occasionally we get a more prudish/Puritanical Draco. We know in Lionheart’s universe, Narcissa alludes to a certain level of hanky panky with Lucius in the RoR, and it certainly seems like Draco had imagined any number of acts with Hermione, even if he hasn’t acted on them in public or perhaps even privately.

If it’s not spoilery, I’d love to know more about how Pureblood culture in Lionheart generally views sex/intimacy, especially inside/outside of courtship and marriage.

It's a mixed bag! I think the Slytherin sex gods thing is a kind of wish-fulfillment (loving compliment) because, put bluntly, the number of 15-17 year-olds who are even kind of charitably good at sex is a mathematical rounding error. Also, Hogwarts has group dorms. Sexiling one person in college is hard enough; imagine you have to sexile (i.e., declare publicly your intent to fuck) 3-5 people every time you want to mess around. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it absolutely does — it's a coed boarding school, you can't fight the wind — but I will say it's probably more at the realistic level of high schoolers fumbling through the excruciating ordeal of learning intimacy, and not "the plot of Euphoria is happening in the dungeons at all times."

Anyway. I interpret the wealthier pureblood set as a kind of wizarding aristocracy, so while in general they're expected to perform to certain expectations and social mores when they're in social/public settings, the fact of the matter is it's the twentieth century and sexual mores are changing a LOT from decade to decade. Narcissa's upbringing would have been radically different from Draco's in terms of how much sex and intimacy would have been open subject — in no small part because Narcissa's generation kind of blew the ceiling off that particular conversation. She was born in 1955 and lived through the Sexual Revolution, meaning that her childhood, adolesence, and young adulthood took place in practically three different geological eras of social life. Meanwhile, women like Walburga and Druella were members of the Greatest Generation (maybe Silent Gen on the younger side), and would've been incredibly traditionalist.

Of course, no matter what the social rules are, teenagers will find a way around them. For the purposes of Lionheart, in 1995, it's understood by most pureblood parents that kids are gonna do what kids are gonna do, but there are specific standards about who you can be seen with and make certain kinds of promises to. Narcissa kind of references this at the end of book 3; she goes on this insulting little spiel about how generations of Blacks and Malfoys had secret muggle-born pets that they kept on the side, they just didn't bring them to dinner parties. Basically, what you do in the privacy of your bedroom is your own business; just don't get caught and don't try to push boundaries, and your social set will be understanding, up to a point. But it would be absolutely improper for "dating" or "courting" to take place between a muggle-born and a pureblood, because that expresses the intent to associate with them in Society, which is a discrete sphere with its own set of rules — one of which is that you have to enforce the caste system.

With respect to specific mores and rules, there's a few references to "etiquette." That stuff's inspired by real etiquette manuals from Victorian and Edwardian England, though I've occasionally thrown in my own twist when it suits me. Dance with the one that brought you; you should have an escort to balls, theoretically but not necessarily someone you're interested in; women run the household, men run the estate. There are certain standards of chivalry and respect on the men's part, but there are also standards of ladylike conduct and decorum on the girls'. Daphne is shocked when Katie wears a suit to the Ball— to the point where she's like "?? ARE you a girl?" — because the rules of dress and poise have been so drilled into her. The level of slut-shaming we get from the Slytherin girls (despite several Slytherin girls being sexually active) also indicates how female sexuality is policed in a way male sexuality isn't; the rumors about Draco and Daphne hurt Daphne, not Draco. This double-edged hypocrisy runs hand in hand with the idea that women are training to be wives, and shouldn't be sleeping with people (if anyone) who they're not seriously pursuing for marriage. Relatedly, courting/engaged couples are usually seen together, a la Crabbe and Millicent, because the idea is you're supposed to be preparing for your marriage; now that you're socially connected, you've begun your tenure as a Unit, and you're expected to act like it. It would be strange for Vince or Millie to go to a ball with someone else unless that partner was a relative or (possibly) a close family friend. It would... imply something.

Marriage between a man and woman would be expected, not because purebloods on the whole are traditionalist — which, to be clear, they are — but because the emphasis on bloodlines means children are a priority. Pansy gives us the best précis on this in Book 2. Blaise, being gay, is in an interesting place vis-a-vis the marriage question because his position doesn't come from being heir to an old estate, it's from his mother's money; in that respect, he's not bound by usual expectations of hereditary legacies, which is possibly why he's comfortable being out. (Although there's a blink-and-you-miss-it remark about some tension with his mom in "Miseducation.")

But even after charitably dividing all profits from the selling of the Manor, he still waged against the demons battling inside his head.

There was only one person who was able to placate the suffocating memories that often threatened to swallow him whole. One person who made him feel like he was more than his erroneous past. But of course, she wasn’t with him tonight. At least, not in the way that mattered.

in all honesty, I'm pretty much doing the reviews so I can keep track of what I've recently read and what I actually liked. I’ll organize it. and more or less try to keep it spoiler free. 

Post-Hogwarts Era

It’s All Uncharted: [C] Nice fluff, in all honesty. Hermione returns to London after a while and finds out Harry and Draco are literally best friends. Draco has feelings for her, and it’s all very sweet. A nice read.

The Wrong Strain: [C] Incredibly unique take on the Veela trope. H becomes infected by a Veela strain, then finds out D is her mate by accident. 

Seventeen: [C] Enjoyable. H and D have a secret relationship, and it becomes fruitful. H hides the child from D, but he eventually discovers her. A nice read but I just hate it when D misses the first parts of his child’s life.

Matched: [C] Marriage fic. I seem to be enjoying this trope from the look of my reads. Honestly, can't remember much from this fic but probably good. 

In Reverse: [C] Nice one-shot. Confusing at first, but the end is worth it.

Thirteenth Night: [C] Probably one of my favorites. D gets pardoned but has to live as a muggle for the rest of his life, and H has to keep an eye on him. They fall in love, but D starts retaining his memories and the memory charm is reversed. 

Apple Pies and Other Amends: [C] My gosh, I love this fic. It is so lighthearted in some parts, but it still brings the darker side of things. H bakes to get over her PTSD, and her last stop on her tour is none other than D.

Aurelian: [C] D and H find out they have a child together. Aurelian’s dialogue just gets a little distracting, but plot is pretty good. Some parts were icky but it was good all in all.

Hogwarts Era

7 First Kisses: [C] I love the movie Fifty First Dates, so I thought this was interesting. Voldemort wins the war, and Draco finds Hermione about to be killed. He takes matters onto his own hands, but before doing the deed, he kisses her for the first time then interesting stuff happen.

Linked: [C] A potions mishap. H and D are linked, and they must find a way to sever the link if they want live unhappily separately. 

Delilah’s Black Book of Poems: [C] One of my favorite favorites. It starts off with A Christmas Carols theme. Draco becomes nicer because of the dream, and it all pays off in the end. It’s pretty angst-y but wow it is unbelievably good.

Wrapped in Red: [C] Nice read. Christmas Secret Santa where H and D get each other. 

The Ends of the Earth: [NC] Could’ve been so good, but its unfinished:(. D ends up going on the horcrux hunt with the golden trio.

I might continue to update on fics I’ll read in the future, but for now, here’s some pretty good ones. :) Also, I don’t think I have enough fics listed to actually create an extremely comprehensive arrangement, but once I reach that point, I’ll choose my most favorites and list them that way.
