India Builds Its Own 'Google Maps’: All You Need To Know
The projects in this scheme will be scrutinized under three layers
Many a time, we have seen newly constructed roads dug up to include new pipelines. One reason for this is the lack of centralized information which can guide these projects so that we can include the pipelines when roads are constructed to start with. Another common issue is a delay in centralized infrastructure projects, in addition to road construction. The Indian Government has come up with a new digital tool to tackle these issues, which is informally called ‘India's Google Map Infrastructure Development. In more formal terms, it is PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for Connectivity, which is a digital tool that will help the government overcome these issues.
How did this project materialise?
Back in 2012, there were talks to bring about the Dholera Smart City project in Gujarat. However, there was no railway station within 40 km of the area. To overcome the issue, a digital map of Dholera and the surrounding area was created to get an overview of the area, following which a railway line was created. However, other issues like the lack of pipelines, and sewer lines have multiplied the infrastructure cost. The Dholera project became the first to recognize this issue and come up with a special purpose vehicle (SPV) along with National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) Trust. This entire episode served as a trigger point for what is now PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
What is PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan?
It is a map-based infrastructure of the government of India launched in 2021. It offers a dashboard with a bird's eye view of tunnels, roads, pipelines, bridges, forests, transmission cables, and airports across the country. It is like a Google maps software for Indian infrastructure. It will help in planning and execution of complex projects and has been developed by the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N). The agenda is to overcome the delay of 1390 mega infrastructure projects.
As of today, Gati Shakti has 2000 layers of information and is growing by the minute as more and more central and state bodies are feeding into the platform. This is helping our infrastructural decision-making. Indian projects are laden with delay, which can now be centralized. Kerala state government is one of the early users of this scheme. The projects in this scheme will be scrutinized under three layers:
1. Technical Support Unit, which is at the lowest level
2. National Planning Group (NPG), which takes care of any discrepancies and issues there might be.
3. Empowered Group Of Secretaries, which is at the highest level and takes care of any remaining discrepancies or escalated issues.
The central government is incentivizing more agencies to utilize this platform in addition to all states and union territories, including 23 central ministries which are already on board. However, the government also has to be wary if sensitive information as cyber hacking is rampant. Additionally, there is a dearth of digitized land records, and land use has always been the Achilles heel for independent India. Lastly, Indian schemes require heavy execution, which is something we are yet to accomplish efficiently.

Gujarat Now Competing With World Big Projects
Gujarat's competition now is not with other states, but with the world.
The world's tallest 'Statue of Unity' is constructed in Gujarat. The world's largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium, is in Gujarat. The world's largest 30,000-MW renewable energy park is in Gujarat...the world's largest CNG port is at Bhavnagar in Gujarat, Rupani said.
He further said the country's first bullet train will start from Gujarat, and the state attracted the highest amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country.
The country's largest commercial complex in Surat, the first International Financial Services at GIFT City, the largest smart industrial city at Dholera SIR Park, are all in Gujarat, he added.
Rupani said Gujarat tops the country in the production of cumin, cotton and groundnut, and has the lowest unemployment rate.
The state tackled the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic through "collective leadership", daily monitoring and decision-making of the core committee, he said.
Gujarat is the only state in the entire country which did not go for a complete lockdown. We tackled the first and second waves of coronavirus with limited control. Now, with the experiences of the second wave, we are ready for the third wave, he said.
The chief minister said his government was committed to all-round development of all the sections of society, and had promptly passed on the benefits of government schemes for the welfare of the weaker sections.
The state government had taken several decisions for the benefits of farmers, women, tribals, and other sections of society, he said, adding that as many as "1,700 decisions were taken fast and without pendency" in the last five years.
The state government also equipped the police with 10,000 'body-worn' cameras and other technologically advanced facilities like drone cameras, so as to make the security force strong and effective, he said.
He also urged people to contribute 60 per cent for a developmental project under the state's 'Vatan Prem Yojana', while the remaining 40 per cent amount will be contributed by the government.

What, How and When? - All About the 100 Smart Cities in India
Perpetual discussions on smart cities like Dholera Smart City has become quite a popular phenomenon. Everyone seems to be talking about it. People are talking about it as a solution to rapid urbanization while economists are terming as a propellant to accelerate economic growth. Let us summarize what these cities are all about in short and simple terms.
What are smart cities?
There is no fixed definition to smart city and the explanation varies depending upon which part of the world you are in.
Indian Government in its reference note for Members on Parliament on the smart city has given a simpler definition to the term: “Smart Cities are those that are able to attract investments.” Investments shall lead to rest other things such as qualitative urban services, good infrastructure and employment opportunities. How have the 100 smart cities been selected?

The parameters included existing service levels, past track record, self-financing and institutional systems and capacities. A two-step process was involved in selecting the smart cities.
Why was each state not given equal opportunity to nominate cities?
The central was clear that each state should be given the opportunity to select at least one smart city. However beyond that, a specific formula fixed the nominations per state. This formula gave equal weightage to the urban population of the state as well as the number of statutory towns within to come up with a number of potential smart cities.

What is the next plan of action?
All cities including Dholera Smart City are now required to submit a smart city proposal containing the entire plan for developing the Dholera City and submit to the government. The cities with deficiency in plan shall be given a chance to improvise their plans and resubmit the same.
The top 20 scorers shall receive financing within this financial year, 40 shall be financed next year and the remaining 40 shall be financed in subsequent year.

Why Did Maharashtra Lose Out on Vedanta's Chip Project to Gujarat?
What Is the Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductor Project?
Vedanta had formed a partnership with electronics giant Foxconn in a 60:40 joint venture to manufacture a semiconductor fabrication ecosystem in India.
Semiconductor chips, or microchips, are essential pieces of many digital consumer products – from cars and mobile phones to ATM cards.
The company had been holding discussions with the Maharashtra government over the last few months to set up the plant.
What Subsidies Was the Maharashtra Govt Offering?
As per documents of the state's industries department, the Maharashtra government had offered an “extremely lucrative incentive package” to the company, The Indian Express reported. Several other incentives were also announced, such as:
· A power tariff subsidy of Rs 1/unit
· Support to Vedanta to manufacture a 750 megawatt solar power plant
· Subsides on land, power, water
· Exemption from electricity duty
The deal would have led to major economic opportunities in the state, and was estimated to bring in around Rs 26,200 crore in State Goods and Services Tax (SGST), create close to two lakh direct and indirect job opportunities and $21 billion direct and $5-8 billion additional investment.
Several other states were also in competition for the investment-heavy project, like Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, and Gujarat.
Why Did Gujarat Get the Deal Instead?
However, the deal was finally gifted to the Gujarat government, as announced on Tuesday.
An MoU was signed between the Gujarat government and the company in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and chairman of the Vedanta Group, Anil Agarwal.
Agarwal later said in a tweet that the decision to choose Gujarat over Maharashtra was an independent one, based on "professional and independent advice."
"We decided Gujarat few months ago as they met our expectations," he said, adding that the Maharashtra government had made a "huge effort" at their meeting in July to "outbid" other states with a competitive offer.
The reason behind Maharashtra losing out on the deal might have been that Gujarat offered a more profitable proposition to the company with regard to land-related incentives, The Indian Express reported, quoting sources.
Did the Centre Play a Role in the Project Going to Gujarat?
The Opposition in Maharashtra, however, has said that Shinde bowed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi as Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Gujarat this year, and getting the deal would bode well for the electoral chances of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government.
During the MoU-signing ceremony, Vedanta's chairman also thanked the Union IT minister for helping the company "tie things up so quickly," indicating a role played by the Centre in this regard.
Congratulating the Gujarat government, PM Modi said, "This MoU is an important step accelerating India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions."
He further added, "The investment of Rs 1.54 lakh crore will create a significant impact to boost economy and jobs. This will also create a huge ecosystem for ancillary industries and help our MSMEs."
Meanwhile, the Shinde government claimed that the reason behind Maharashtra losing out on the lucrative deal was that the the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance did not provide adequate incentives to Vedanta-Foxconn, leading to them choosing the neighboring state to the west.

LAPs are popular among customers and the market is forecast to grow at 14% CAGR by 2025-26. Real estate has always been a big-ticket investment, but things have changed in recent years. Investors can now take a smaller exposure through real estate investment trusts (REITs). Currently only for commercial property, REITs might be allowed to extend to other assets such as malls, warehouses, industrial parks and possibly housing.

Dholera SIR beats with patience: The fragrance of smart city is contained in every particle of the deserted
Dholera means that part of Ahmedabad district, which is no longer limited to just one place or tehsil in the whole world, the financial capital of the western state of Gujarat. Dholera has been declared as Special Investment Region i.e. SPEICAL INVESTMENT REGION (SIR) and is the largest Dholera SIR in the whole world, which is spread over 920 kms.
Recently got the opportunity to visit Dholera SIR. My journey by car started from Ahmedabad and after covering a distance of about 110 kms, when I entered Dholera SIR, I was a bit shocked. I have been hearing about Dholera Smart City Project since the year 2009 i.e. for 12 years, but even after these 12 years, Dholera appeared as if lying deserted all around. However, as Dholera went ahead on Sir's journey, the fragrance of the future vast city i.e. Smart City started coming from every particle of the deserted land of Dholera.
In fact Dholera Smart City is about to become the first Smart City of India. The dream of this smart city was seen by the visionary Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi in the year 2009, when he used to be the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Modi had cherished the dream of a city on which not only Gujarat, but the whole of India can be proud of and that too on a land which is not cultivable but a barren land. Narendra Modi also dreamed of a smart city on this land so that all the surrounding areas and people including this barren land can also be developed. This task was not that easy. There were many challenges in the way of this dream project of Narendra Modi. But with these challenges, experts were engaged behind this work and the experts did a long study. After this long-term study, this ambitious project was launched in the year 2011. Now after eight years, 5600 acres of Dholera SIR will be developed and ready in 2022.

As I progressed during my visit to Dholera, projects of many companies investing in the land came up on the way. Although on the one hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and the government of Gujarat are eager to realize the smart city in Dholera at the earliest, on the other hand many builder-developer-investors were also seen, who showed the land on paper to woo the people. But nothing was visible on the surface of reality. In some places only the boards of the project were installed, in many places the land plots were not even delimited. Many investors were also found who were selling land only on paper. They were unable to state whether the customer wanted to buy the land, From where is he to? Can he stand on his own ground? During this visit it was found that the projects of many companies were limited to projectors only. No work was seen on the surface of the realm.
How will Dholera Smart City be?
Modern Technology. State-of-the-art facilities and advanced communication. All these are the demands of future times. In a way, it can be said that the coming time will be full of competition and progress in sync. To keep pace with the times and to stand in line with foreign infrastructure, India's first smart city is taking shape in Gujarat and this smart city i.e. Dholera. And this project i.e. Dholera Special Investment Region. ie SIR. This project is being prepared under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor ie DMIC. The total area of Dholera is 920 km. Dholera is dreamed to be the best in the world and the six lane expressway connecting Dholera with cities such as Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is also a major highlight of the project. Dholera's Greenfield Smart Industrial City will be the only smart city which will have infrastructure equipped with ICT i.e. Information and Communication Technology. Land will be available on a large scale for ultra mega and mega industries. The green covered area will be on a large scale i.e. a city, where there will be greenery. In this way, there is no pollution in Dholera Smart City, such a complete event has been organized.
Dholera Smart City will be a dream city. There will be all kinds of facilities here. Features that are commonly found in business friendly cities in Europe and America. When it comes to foreign affairs. So infrastructure becomes the most important and when it comes to the top class infrastructure of Dholera Smart City, So recently Dholera's connectivity is via National Highway ie NH 08A and State Highway ie SH 06. Among these, AH 08 is the Ahmedabad-Bagodra highway. Whereas SH 06 reaches Dholera from Bagodra Fedra Pipli. Here NH 08 is being developed as 6 laned and SH 06 is being developed as 4 laning. With the development of these two highways, Dholera's connectivity with the main cities of the state, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar will increase. And that is why all the companies will also have the facility to do business with both the cities. It can also be said here that with better connectivity, the possibilities of industrial growth also increase immensely.
It is very important to connect any smart city with abroad. In such a situation, it becomes necessary to have an international airport for connectivity.
