Stoops Issue 12 (DIY Issue) is now available!
So I've been doing this magazine for 9 years now and you would think I would have streamlined the process for releases, but being that it is still mostly a one person operation over here with no real industry support or ad dollars, I'm still just doing my best. Each issue hinges on whatever time and money I have to throw into it with hopes of breaking even but mostly coming to terms with the reality that I am spending what others may spend on mortgages, or cars, or alcoholism to put out a skateboarding publication for my own sanity, grasping for a sense of purpose, and for the few of you actually appreciate it. One day I will come to my senses and give it up, but for now, it is somehow still moving along with no drop in quality. And while I know this seems like a pity party of one over here, it is really my segue into the theme of the new issue. Issue 12 has a Do-It-Yourself theme where we explore the concept of creating spots out of nothing. Just as I am creating a magazine with my own resources, accepting the loss of funds to produce something that brings me joy, skateboarders have been doing this for years. Every spot built by skaters using their own hard earned money has no monetary pay off but brings them joy, as well as netting some happiness for others who get to enjoy using the product of that labor. This issue explores the DIY mentality in skateboarding and its importance.

The Initiation Of Khalsa
Guru Nanak Dev Ji founded the Sikh religion in Northern India in the fifteenth century, and it is the world's fifth-largest religion, with 25 million adherents worldwide. The religion believes in a single God, equality, religious freedom, and community service. Sikhs adhere to three basic principles: meditating on God's name (praying), earning a living through honest means, and sharing the fruits of one's labor with others. Sikhism opposes caste and class systems and places a premium on humanitarian service. The universality of the Sikh way of life reaches out to people of all faiths and cultural backgrounds, encouraging us to look beyond our differences and work together for global peace and harmony.
The Initiation Of Khalsa
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last living Sikh Guru, summoned his followers to the Punjab town of Anandpur in 1699; over 80,000 people attended. Guru Gobind Singh, according to legend, appeared before his people, brandished a naked sword, and demanded a head. He called again and again until five Sikhs volunteered. He called the volunteers the Panj Pyare and the first Khalsa in the Sikh tradition. These five volunteers were : Daya Ram (Bhai Daya Singh), Dharam Das (Bhai Dharam Singh), Himmat Rai (Bhai Himmat Singh), Mohkam Chand (Bhai Mohkam Singh), and Sahib Chand (Bhai Sahib Singh)
Guru Gobind Singh then mixed water and sugar into an iron bowl, stirring it with a double-edged sword while reciting gurbani to prepare what he called Amrit ("nectar"). He then administered this to the Panj Pyare, accompanied with recitations from the Adi Granth, thus founding the khanda ki pahul (baptism ceremony) of a Khalsa – a warrior community. After the first five Khalsa had been baptized, the Guru asked the five to baptize him as a Khalsa. This made the Guru the sixth Khalsa, and his name changed from Guru Gobind Rai to Guru Gobind Singh. On that day, he gave the Sikhs a distinct identity, including five articles of faith that he introduced for a variety of reasons:
1. Adopting these common symbols would allow Khalsa members to be identified.
2. Because all Khalsa members wear the 5 Ks, the community is more strongly linked together.
3. Each K is significant in its own way.
The Meaning Of Five Ks
The 5 Ks are taken together to symbolize that the Sikh who wears them has dedicated themselves to a life of devotion and submission to the Guru. The 5 Ks are 5 physical symbols worn by Sikhs who have been initiated into the Khalsa. They are: Kesh (Uncut hair) Kara (Iron bracelet) Kanga (a wooden comb) Kachera (cotton underwear) Kirpan (steel sword)
1. Kesh (Uncut Hair)
It is a prominent symbol of Sikh identity. Uncut hair represents the adoption of a simple life and the rejection of pride in one's appearance. Throughout Sikhism's history, hair (kesh) has been regarded as a symbol of both holiness and strength. Long hair is considered proof of a devout Sikh's devotion and a sign of a Sikh's commitment and devotion to his/her Guru.
2. Kara (Iron Bracelet)
SKara represents unbreakable attachment and devotion to God. It serves as a constant reminder of the Sikh's mission on this planet, and that he or she must carry out righteous and true deeds and actions in accordance with the Guru's advice. The round shape of the Kara represents God, who has no beginning and no end.....

Know your history… it is true as today as was yesterday… *WHY INDIA MUST KNOW ABOUT BAISAKHI* While the Punjabis celebrate Vaisakhi across India; rest of India wonders if it is about doing Bhangra and dancing. No, it is not; Baisakhi holds a lesson for all Indians...... Specially in this day and age... So *this day in 1699*, in a congregation of people from all across India...standing there in Anandpur Sahab, listening to their Guru, the then Gobind Rai. *Gobind Rai asked for human sacrifice of five men, one after the other.* Five men from different castes, from different parts of India, stood up from the crowd of thousands. - *A shopkeeper, Baniya called Daya Ram from Lahore* - *A farmer, Jat called Dharam Das from Meerut* - *A so called low-caste water carrier, called Himmat Rai from Jagannath Puri, Odisha* - *A tailor,of Cheemba caste called Mokam Chand from Dwarka, Gujarat* - *A barber, of Naai caste called Sahib Chand from Bidar, Karnataka* With his choice of disciples from five different corners of India, *Gobind Rai ji visualised the Nation dream... from the coast of Gujarat along Western Arabian Sea to coasts of Odisha along the Bay of Bengal; from the great Plains of Punjab to the the Gangetic Plain and then onto the Deccan peninsula covering Karnataka.* Do not forget that at that time, all these were separate states; it was Guru Gobind Singh ji who thought of all of them as one People, a Nation, on this Baisakhi day of 1699. With the choice of disciples from five different caste-groups, *he visualised an integrated class-less society.* The five were christened as the First Five Khalsa Sikhs, and the five in turn christened their Guru as the sixth. Gobind Rai was now Gobind Singh ji. *All caste names and surnames were dropped, & a common surname SINGH* was proposed for all Indians across India; a surname that denoted a caste-less, class-less creed of men willing to sacrifice themselves for the nation and against injustice. This motley group of people uprooted Afghan and Mughal rule from entire North India from the Yamuna to the Khyber pass, such was the power of this vision. And this was the Indian that he envisioned from the five corners of HIS nation. Guru Gobind Singh ji was a visionary par excellence. His vision has been diluted and limited to Sikhism, that is a travesty. *Awake India, awake to his Vision. Leave those caste barriers, acquire knowledge, be strong in body and be a Khalsa in spirit. Khalsa (the one who is खालस, Pure) is a state of mind, not a Religion.* Happy Baisakhi... Forwarded as received. Apologies for any incorrectness.

24 Dec. 9 ਪੋਹ --- By the evening of 23rd December, both of the Sahibzaade and Many Singhs had become Shaheed. Guru Gobind Singh jee planned to leave the fort and fight next in the battlefield. Knowing this, five Singhs (Bhai Dya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Maan Singh, Bhai Raam Singh and Bhai Dya Singh Prohit) under the leadership of Bhai Dya Singh asked Guru jee to not leave the fort to fight. Guru jee replied, "How can this be? People will say that Gobind Singh had other's sons killed at the fort of Chamkaur. I am going to go and fight now." Bhai Dya Singh jee replied, "Guru jee, when you blessed us with the gift of Amrit, you bestowed the Khalsa with the respect of being your Perfect Guru. Today the Khalsa gives you the order to leave the fort of Chamkaur. We first requested you but now we are ordering you." Guru jee then gave his Dastaar and Kalgi to Bhai Sangat Singh. Bhai Sangat Singh and few other Singhs were left behind at Chamkaur. Guru Sahib had not left quietly. On leaving, Guru Sahib blew his horn and stood on high ground and clapped his hands three times saying "Peer-e-Hind ravvad" ("The "Peer" of Hind is leaving"). As day broke, the Mughals launched an all out attack on the fortress. There was stiff resistance. They finally entered the fort, after hours of battering the fort, but Bhai Sangat Singh, Bhai Sant Singh and the remaining Sikhs charged out on horseback. They engaged the enemy and killed scores of the enemy before attaining martyrdom. The Mughals rejoiced over Sangat Singh's slain body, thinking they had captured and killed Guru Gobind Singh. By the time they realized their error, The Mughal were failed to capture Guru Gobind singh (today is the shaheedi divas of Bhai Sangat singh and other sikh who fought in Chamkaur fort) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6cRiCIloLg/?igshid=133b4jhg3n2om

While the Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi across India; rest of India wonders if it is about doing Bhangra and dancing.

So this day in 1699, in a congregation of people from all across India...standing there listening to their Guru, Sree Gobind Rai. Gobind Rai asked for human sacrifice of five men one after the other. Five men from different castes from different parts of India stood up from the crowd of thousands.
- A shopkeeper, Baniya called Daya Ram from Lahore - A farmer, Jat called Dharam Das from Meerut - A so called low-caste water carrier, called Himmat Rai from Jagannath Puri, Odisha - A tailor,of Cheemba caste called Mukham Chand from Dwarka, Gujarat - A barber, of Naai caste called Sahib Chand from Bidar, Karnataka

Do not forget that at that time, all these were separate states; it was Guru Gobind Singh ji that thought of all of them as one... this Baisakhi day of 1699.
With the choice of disciples from five different caste-groups, he visualised an integrated class-less society. The five were christened as the First Five Khalsa Sikhs, and the five in turn christened their Guru as the sixth. Gobind Rai was now Gobind Singh ji. All caste names and surnames were dropped, & a common surname was proposed for all Indians across India; a surname that denoted a caste-less, class-less creed of men willing to sacrifice themselves for the nation and against injustice.
And the swaroop he chose for the class-less people was an amalgmation of the ancient Indian thought of Rishis (as mentioned by Guru Gobind Singh in the Sarbloh Granth) and the Kshatriya tradition of Warriors, hence the Jooda, the hairs and the Talwar. The concept of Miri-Piri was coded in the dress-system of this new society envisioned by him. A group of people who were strong in Miri (Physical Strength and material possessions) and Piri (Spiritual Strength and humility)
So, the five so called lower castes were given the temporal strength of a Rishi (a Brahmin citadel till then ) and the Physical responsibilities of a Kshatriya (a duty till then limited to the Rajputs).
Awake India, awake to his vision. Leave those caste barriers, acquire knowledge, be strong in body and be a Khalsa in spirit. Your religion doesn't matter. Khalsa is a state of mind, not just a religion.
Happy Baisakhi...

Gurdwara Sri Charan Kanwal Sahib, Machhiwara (Ludhiana)
Gurdwara Sri Charan Kanwal Sahib, Machhiwara, is a sacred place where accepting the order of 'Five Pyaayas' during the unique battle of Dashmesh Pita Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Chamkaur, leaving the fortress of Chamkaur, while the thorny bushes traveled through the wilderness Arrived in the forest of Machiwwara. The holy feet of the Guru's feet are blood-strong, but remembering God, he utters these words: -
Hall Meridan said to friend dear .. .......
At this place, Bhai Daya Singh ji, Bhai Dharam Singh and Bhai Man Singh ji, who were separated from the fortress of Chamkaur, came to visit. When the Guru-house favorite Gulab Chand Masand came to know of the coming of the Gurudev, he himself came in with respect and brought the Guru to his house. Horse traders Bhai Gani Khan, Nabi Khan also belonged to Machiwwara, who fondly served the Guru. Panth's own 'Neel Bastar', from here itself, walks on his path in the form of 'High Pir'. Gurdev's palanquin was raised by Bhai Dharam Singh, Bhai Man Singh, Bhai Gani Khan and Bhai Nabi Khan, and Bhai Daya Singh ji started churning the king.
Gurdwara Sri Charan Kanwal Sahib has become a new beautiful building in memory of Guru Ji's footsteps. The birth anniversary of the first, the fifth, the ninth and the tenth Guru, the birth anniversary of the Khalsa, the anniversary of the annual Baisakhi festival is celebrated on a large scale.
Machhiwara Tehsil Samrala is the district headquarter of Ludhiana, which is 40 kilometers from Ludhiana-Chandigarh main road on the Samrala-Machiwara link road. Gurdwara Charan Kanwal is just 500 meters from Bus stand manchiwada.
