Twenty minutes. That was how long was left on Rainer’s patrol shift before he was freed from being on duty at the Fall Festival. Twenty god damned minutes that seemed to be dragging on for longer than the nearly six hours before combined. It had been a small mercy from the sheriff to score the morning festival patrol; not only had it saved him from the busiest time of day, but there was still plenty of time to escape to the woods, to go fishing or anything that was far away from the damn town square and the bustle of the event. Arms crossed, he surveyed the crowd that sprawled out in front of him, eyes occasionally dropping to the watch on his wrist. Nineteen minutes. Eighteen. Sevent– The crashing sound jolted him from the trance he had fallen under, watching the hands spin endlessly around the watch face. Eyes darting left and right, he tried to spy the source of the noise. “What the fuck was that?”
#dfrpg:starter#dfrpg:event01#your character can be involved in the crash or just an onlooker but i'm imagining something pretty mundane#nothing spicy

“Oh I think I’m in your shot.” They said to the person across the street who were clearly snapping pictures. The sight at a camera, unintentionally or not, being pointed in their direction stirred up some nerves causing Élodie to speak up in hopes of the lens being pointed away from them rather than at them. It wasn’t hard to understand why people would be out taking pictures today though. It was one of those gorgeous autumn days when the sun shone and all the different colors in nature popped and made Aurora show itself from its best side to anyone new to town. “Its a really gorgeous day, isn’t it?”

The ongoing speculation drowning the town was, morbid as the fact might have been, interesting to listen to. Nathan had ventured outside more lately for the sheer fact that he felt like watching the paranoia creep through people like a plague. And as someone who knew paranoia on a day to day basis? He always found it curious how other people handled it, which generally amounted to better than himself but that came as no shocking revelation.
He shrugged it off and went back to the distraction at hand, or rather in hand, as his own was wrapped around a glass half empty (now there was an amusing bit of irony if there ever was one) and his eyes wandered in no certain direction. He figured a few more drinks and the idea of it being flying monkeys that had tried to kill everyone would be an entertaining one, which really would have explained the Ferris Wheel breaking that high up off the ground, wouldn't it? He mulled over it while lifting the glass to drain some of the dark liquid and feel it burn down his throat. Not the strangest thought he'd had, no, not even lately.
It dissolved, the notion, with the slide of a body past him and the seat next to his own at the bar suddenly no longer empty. True, the bar was a bit crowded, even so he couldn't help but think it was his usual off-skew luck striking again. "Do witches actually have flying monkeys for pets?" What the hell, if he was going to be there he might as well entertain himself, plus it was a valid question, he thought. "If you're a witch I apologize for how insulting this conversation is in advance." Deadpan, which meant he wasn't serious, not that it ever seemed to matter with most people.

It was a little after noon, the air was warm, and Ezra had nothing to do but to play on his phone. He had tried all the games; at least, all the free games. If those companies thought he was shelling out what little money he had just to not watch commercials... well, actually, maybe that’s the reason he could afford all his groceries. The phone in his hand beeped at him instantly after that thought, signaling the low battery it possessed. He let out a heavy sigh, somehow disturbing the one alcoholic in the corner of the bar. Ezra made a face at him and the man turned away, back to looking at his nearly empty beer.
The wolf rose slowly, the moon still taking energy from his body even without being in the sky, and gave him a refill before he could grumble and complain like he normally could. Regretting ever showing up to work and just letting Emma work for probably the thirtieth day in a row, he took a seat at one of the tables and pondered day drinking. Thankfully the door opens right then and he looks up to the person with a hopeless, puppy dog expression on his face.
“Tell me you got a good story. Or you want to buy all the booze in the place so I can close down. I’ll accept either.”

Aurora. Home sweet home. Or at least, it was once upon a time. Walking around town only proved that nothing had changed in the ten years since she left town. The streets were even lined with the same weeds. Just for a moment, Sarah let her mind wander to what her life would be like if the accident never happened. Four years of college, moving back, marrying someone who peaked in high school, probably a kid or two. No thank you.
As she walked by a store window, Sarah pulled her hood up over her head. Revealing her identity would only raise uncomfortable questions, so incognito it was. She rounded a corner, stopping almost dead in her tracks when she saw someone staring at her. “Um, can I help you with something?”

Elijah tucked his notepad into his pocket and took a look around the neighborhood, this was very much different from New York City where it was always busy but due to the recent murders in town, things seemed a lot quieter and barely anyone wanted to answer his questions so he put it down to a small town thing. Elijah hadn’t been in a small town in years, let alone stepped foot in a sheriffs station, that was a new thing for him earlier but now he was out and about, getting to know the layout of the town and asking the locals a few questions, even checked out the crime scenes, sure, it was a lot to do in a few hours but no time like the present to jump into things, right?
He checked his phone for the address his boss had given him for the apartment he was supposed to be moving into (he hoped that the movers didn’t scare Paul too much) but he looked around and sighed. “Excuse me, do you know where this address is?” Elijah showed the stranger the address on his phone.

Adapting to a city was a different experience. She had never been a part of a community before and just interacting with people was difficult on a day to day basis. As much as she depended on her wolf for everything it was hard to keep it down most days. Every day to day tasks left her confused most of the time. People were strange. Life was strange.
Sitting on the ground at the park the easiest way for her to learn being human was to people watch. Watch the way regular people interacted with each other. Her dark eyes narrowed on one person in particular. Focusing on their movements she jumped as a voice echoed behind her.

‘SECOND BODY FOUND’. The black letters jumped off the paper when Zach walked past the place where they sold them. He quickly walked over there to check it out. That headline already didn’t mean well, but it was the second headline that really shocked him. ‘Owner of Hole in the Wall found dead’. That was enough for Zach to immediately take the paper, count out some money with trembling hands and take it to a place where he could read the whole thing undisturbed.
Annice? Someone had killed Annice? It wasn’t like they had been very close, he hadn’t seen her in decades, but he had liked to see her back, he had liked the idea of spending some time together. Someone who knew him without judging him... someone who knew about his past. He shook his head, hardly believing what he was reading, before the realization hit him. Annice had been a vampire. It’s hard to kill one... the killer most likely knew about them. It also explained why he hadn’t heard about it in the hospital. Her body never made it there.
Another realization hit him. It was suspect, two murders, just after he arrived in town. He had dealt with that in Arcadia, being a vague suspect, he didn’t know if he wanted to do that again. But then again... he didn’t want to run again. That would mean leaving Erik here to wreak havoc -he really hoped Erik didn’t have anything to do with all of this-, and how said it was going to be better anywhere else. He folded the paper, sighing deep and hoped his shock wasn’t visible on his face. It did scare him when he suddenly saw someone looking at him. “Sorry? I just couldn’t believe what I just read...”

It was a long day and her patience was wearing very thin. Juliet ordered a double whiskey. Her designer outfit standing out at the bar. It didn’t take long for her drink to come and the vampire to down all of it in one sitting. Asking for another, she rolled her eyes when she saw someone sit next to her. “You know there are three perfectly good empty seats farther down.” She said. Was she the only one that liked personal space?

Constance was currently sat on the abandoned swings at the park, idly swaying back and forth on her day off. Her eyes were focused on some mushrooms growing a foot away in the dewy grass, trying to identify them, but she hadn’t memorized the different species of Vermont yet.
Something tingled at the back of Constance’s mind, distracting her from her task and she perked up instantly, knowing what that meant; a presence stepping through the threshold of the humble park. A smile split across Constance’s face and she locked eyes with the stranger.
“Thought I’d have the place to myself. It’s too cold for most right now,” though, she didn’t look like she minded the company. Despite her isolated lifestyle, she was a social creature at heart.

He took a sip from the hipflask he had stuck in his pocket, still getting used to the extra weight he was carrying on his back. He knew he wouldn’t feel them anymore at the end of the night, but for now he was kind of regretting his costume choice. They were heavy and not practical. Besides... he was here for the fun part later at night, to to watch the kids carve a pumpkin. “Well... at least nothing changed in the way this party is going since I was playing those games...”

Midnight in the station had always been Rainer’s favourite time to do work; most had gone home by then, leaving him alone with only the faint buzz of the fluorescent lights to fill the silence. That couldn’t have been further from the last for the last few days since the fall festival; the station had been abuzz with activity practically around the clock. It wasn’t until day four post-festival that Rainer had put his foot down and sent everyone home at ten pm with orders to get a good night’s sleep and come back in the morning with fresh eyes. For a full two hours, he thought he’d been successful, until he saw movement through the gap in his office’s blinds and realized someone had stayed behind.
Grabbing two cups, he filled them with the coffee that had been brewing in the corner and headed to Bea’s desk, sliding one of them toward her as he pulled up a chair beside her desk. He knew better than to comment on her presence, she wouldn’t have been any more likely than him to leave the case alone. “Any progress?”

It had taken Erik a short time to track Zachary down, but he didn’t go to him straight away, no he hung back, blended into the rest of the Sunday afternoon crowd in the town of Aurora and even stopped for a coffee at the cafe all while keeping Zachary in his line of sight.
But it was only until after nightfall and his brothers shift at the hospital when Erik finally decided to reveal himself. He had seen him go down an alley, probably a shortcut to his place so decided to meet him on the other end of it, using his speed to pop up on the other side and just in time fo the other vampire to nearly walk into him, “Good evening.” Erik let the moonlight hit his features so he knew exactly who it was.

To his credit Nathan didn't jump, exactly, at the knock on his door, even though the sound did invade his personal sanctuary and jolt him out of an intense scene in the movie droning from his laptop. He did debate for a long moment just ignoring it, but then again he had also been debating the lapse of clear judgement that had led him to moving in with another person upon returning to the town in the first place. Questionable, that choice, and he had made a mental note to ignore any further advice from his brothers when it came to what they considered his lack of social normality. Still wasn’t convinced it hadn’t been some plot by the two of them to get even with him over something.
Which didn't get him out of the situation but even if he found some way to stubborn pride wasn't going to allow him to prove them right by showing he was incapable of existing in the same space as other people. Or at least one other person that he had barely spoken to and was perfectly willing to leave alone to whatever it was they did in the rest of the house.
Funny how that didn't work both ways.
"Yes?" Almost tentative with the answer, as he never kept track of time well in the evenings, he assumed normal people were either asleep or busy trying to figure out the recent happenings downtown so it wasn't expected.
Elbow propped back against the desk, lazy in his half slump across the chair, his eyes flickered back to the screen. At least they knocked, one saving grace and apparently a standing courtesy in that much, but the rest he was still trying to figure out; new territory having people around who were not actually related to him and familiar enough to predict what they might do.
Short of burning down the place, offhand, he wasn't overly concerned how his new roommate kept occupied.
Another click on the keyboard and he was splitting his attention between the door and the screen, trying to settle back into the splash of fake blood and the chainsaw-laced screams. His mind kept flickering back to the chaos of the past few days and it wasn't where he wanted to wander, so distraction it was.

Charlie always found house pets to be useless. He understood the fascination with small creatures you could train, having them obey to your commands, following orders --- it sounds like a power trip he couldn’t resist. Though they died quickly, some even naive to their masters will. Not to mention they were fragile, fragile as any person in this town. “Isn’t she beautiful? I found her on top of a roof,” he mused with a sly grin, looking down at the cat in his lap, then upwards to a pair of eyes. “I don’t know what I’ll do with her... maybe she could be a snack?” A short pause of silence, eyes staring coldly at the person in front of him, a wicked laugh soon following after. “I’m just joking, I’m not so cruel.” Or was he? The climate of the town was rocky with all the deaths occurring, and Charlie sure enjoyed making people feel uncomfortable.

Now Halloween had came and went, it was time to knuckle down on this case, try to get to the bottom of it so he set off from the station that morning with the intention of trying to get people to answer his questions, formally this time and not just a curious newcomer. Starting with the park, he paused and looked around, seeing if he could find someone to speak with.
