BJP readies 'tit for tat' to counter Trinamool's goondaism

Facing attacks from a fiery West Bengal chief minister post-demonetisation as also after a series of arrests of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders with regard to ponzi schemes, the BJP has readied its plan to respond. "Tit for tat" is how the Centre's ruling party described its strategy.

Mamata cries political vendetta

CM Mamata Banerjee and her party have been crying "political vendetta" after the CBI arrested party leaders-Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar, Tapas Pal last Friday, and party leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay on Tuesday- in connection with the Rose Valley scam. On the other hand, the BJP has been alleging that TMC activists have been concertedly attacking its cadre and leaders in reaction to demonetisation and these arrests.

"We don't want any ugly situation to arise. But if the TMC and its chief minister continue to attack us like this, attacking our offices and our leaders, our activists will have no choice but go in for self-defence. They (TMC) should remember, their leaders and MPs too stay in Delhi," said West Bengal BJP leader and national secretary of the party Rahul Sinha.

BJP fed up with "goondaism" of TMC

The BJP, however, seemed ready to "bare its fangs", both in Delhi as well as the state. Top party sources told MAIL TODAY that the saffron outfit was "fed up" of the "goondaism" of TMC in West Bengal and its activists were ready to launch "reprisal attacks", though the party has not issued any express directions in this regard.

"These arrests will not stop," a senior BJP functionary told MAIL TODAY, hinting that the Centre would keep using its machinery to put pressure on Banerjee and her party. The functionary pointed out that they were successfully able to use the CRPF a few days ago when the BJP office ion Kolkata was attacked by people bearing TMC flags, though the allegations have been denied by the TMC. "Our leader Rahul Sinha was inside the office and as he is a CRPF protectee, we were justified in sending the force to rescue him," he said.

Moreover, party sources told MAIL TODAY that activists in the state had been asked to be ready to defend themselves, if the need arose. "Where they find us they can beat us, but it goes for the too. If we find them, we will thrash them too. There is not much of a choice the TMC has left us with," said a senior BJP leader from Bengal.

BJP beef up legal apparatus

Hinting at the way things could go in the future, top BJP leaders told MAIL TODAY that the party had opened its coffers to defend its activists in the state against police repression and vendetta attacks. "We have beefed up our legal apparatus. We have readied them to fight cases that have been and will be slapped on to our cadre. Most of our cadre is poor, but we will pay for their bail etc."

TMC rattled due to exposes

Adding to the already murky situation, BJP leaders also hinted that arrests will not stop in the coming times. "The TMC is rattled because it has been exposed. The 'popular' CM opposed demonetisation, but people didn't follow her. They praised the PM and stood patiently in lines. Now, their leaders are being arrested for complicity in ponzi schemes. Mamata and her party thinks hitting the roads to gherao PMO, scuttling law and order in the state and perpetrating violence will pressurize law enforcement agencies to stop looking into her crimes," Sinha said.

"Sudip Bandhopadhyay is not the only one to be arrested; it will reach the doorsteps of the CM house soon," Sinha added.

BJP delegation demands Centre to review situation

Meanwhile, in the backdrop of the attack on the BJP office and the residence of MP Babul Supriyo by people carrying TMC flags, a BJP delegation on Thursday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and demanded that the Centre review the situation in the state. "We request your immediate and determined intervention in this matter," BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said.

The co-in charge of West-Bengal and national secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said, "TMC should introspect about what it was doing. They (TMC) accuse BJP of using the office of the state governor, but there is violence and breakdown of law and order in the state. Several BJP workers were injured when people carrying TMC flags had attacked its state headquarters here on Tuesday after the arrest of the TMC MP Sudip Bandhopadhyay in connection with the Rose Valley ponzi scam."

Singh added, "The Narada Tapes case is still with the ethics committee of the Parliament." The sting tapes, which were released by Narada Media Pvt Ltd before the West Bengal Assembly elections last year, purportedly show 11 TMC leaders, including ministers and MPs, accepting money.

Akshay Kumar in Jolly LLB 2: Is this Arshad Warsi's revenge?

Arshad Warsi doesn't seem to have forgotten Akshay Kumar replacing him in Jolly LLB 2. The actor, if reports are to be believed, is apparently planning to release his upcoming film Irada on the same day as Jolly LLB 2 hits the screens: February 10.

Irada will mark director Aparna Singh's debut and has Arshad Warsi reuniting with his Ishqiya co-star Naseeruddin Shah. Falguni Sheth, the producer of Irada, told Mid-Day, "Our film is ready and we are looking at an early release. We were eyeing a window next month and February 10 appears ideal."

February 10 is the day Akshay's Jolly LLB 2 hits the theatres. The Republic Day weekend will see Shah Rukh Khan's Raees clashing with Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil, and if both the films do well, they are bound to continue at the screens for at least two weeks.

As such, the producers of Irada feel that releasing their film on February 10 will mean not being swallowed up by titans Raees and Kaabil. However, February 10 would mean clashing with Akshay's Jolly LLB 2. Releasing Irada on February 10 is being construed as an angry Arshad Warsi's method of getting back at the Jolly LLB 2 team for replacing him with Akshay Kumar.

Director Subhash Kapoor's Jolly LLB, the 2013 film, was a sleeper hit with critics praising Arshad Warsi for his role of Jolly. Back when it was announced that Akshay Kumar was being roped in to play the lead role in the sequel, Warsi had reportedly said, ""I was supposed to do it, but the studio needed a bigger star. If you have a bigger star, then even if the film is not that good, you still manage to recover the money, so the risk factor from the producer's point of view is less. It bothers me a bit, but not that much. I was the one who convinced Subhash (Kapoor, director) to go ahead and do it [cast Akshay] since he was not willing to."

Earlier, when Akshay Kumar was asked about his comments on replacing Arshad Warsi in the sequel to Jolly LLB, he said, "It is the producer's call. I did 'Welcome' (2007), but not 'Welcome Back' (2015); I did not feel bad. It was my franchise, so should I feel bad?"

Apart from Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Jolly LLB 2 stars Huma Qureshi and Saurabh Shukla in pivotal roles.
