CDE Asia becomes a proud patron of the gigantic Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway Project
16 August 2022
CDE Asia on its 16th anniversary, added another feather to its cap with their key contribution to the construction of India’s largest Greenfield route alignment- Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway
India will soon witness the inauguration of its biggest expressway project- Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway, officially known as Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. The expressway will link Mumbai, the financial capital of India, to Nagpur, the major hub of Vidarbha Region, and reduce the commute time from 14-15 hours to 8-9 hours. This is considered to be the largest and most ambitious road project in Maharashtra till date.
In view of the project’s enormity i.e., spanning 701 km, it required around 43.3 Lakh Tonne of sand. CDE Asia, being the market leader of wet processing equipment industry serving a constellation of 24 countries in the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, came to aid this critical project. The company in its sixteen years of existence, has created a sand production capacity of 56 million tons per annum with its machines’ operating time of 3000 hours each year. We have created a dominance in the M-sand market with 5 percent of total sand capacity in India, making us one of the largest contributors to the sand industry whose volume requirement stands at 1 billion tons per annum. Thus, reducing the consumption of river sand in India.
The Nagpur-Mumbai expressway passes through ten districts – Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Aurangabad, Jalna, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Thane covering 701 km and 16 packages. The project consists of 50 plus flyovers, 24 plus interchanges, more than 5 tunnels, 400 plus vehicular, and over 300 pedestrian underpasses. Almost 45% of the expressway has been constructed with the sand produced by the CDE Asia plants.
As on date, a total of 13 plants have already been commissioned by CDE Asia for this project, involving most of the frontline contractors of the construction industry. This includes Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, Dilip Buildcon Ltd, NCC Limited, Navyuga Engineering Company Ltd, Raj Infrastructure Development (India) Private Limited & Roadway Solutions India Infra Ltd. (sub-contractor for Reliance Infra).
Availability of river sand being a major issue in Maharashtra, the construction of this expressway by MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation) demanded a continuous supply of IS 383 grade M-Sand. This is when CDE Asia flung into action with the goal of providing comprehensive sand solutions and a sustainable and scalable resource of sand for the project. In need of an economical, ecologically sound and quality-controlled supply of M-sand, we were the first sand washing company that occurred to the contractor on commencement of the project.
Combo X70, from CDE Asia’s flagship Combo platform, was the most sought-after wet sand processing equipment for this colossal project. It is equipped for feeding, grading, dewatering, water recycling, conveying and sludge handling, all in one machine. The ambitious plant has zero liquid discharge and 95% water recycling solution with minimal maintenance to process an accurate cut point of 75 microns of fine particles. The patented Hydrocyclone and thickener combo technology ensures consistent production of M-sand quality as per IS Standard (Zone I-IV). In line with the basic environmental requirement for this project, Combo X70 guarantees zero waste and controlled silt production which places it ahead of its competitors. Given the significant volume requirement for the Expressway, contractors also benefit from the high ROI afforded by Combo X70.

Waste to Energy – Achieving Self-sustenance in Sewage Treatment Plant
The successful operation of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) not only lies with achieving the desired standards but also with value additions & overall plant operation, economical as well as technical ease. There is lot of concern on the present growing dependence on Power supply in Developing countries like India. This has driven the Wastewater treatment market to look for alternative sources of energy. Bio sludge, the major waste generated in an STP is a valuable carbonaceous resource, which can be efficiently utilized for generation of energy with well-designed Sludge Treatment units employing Anaerobic digesters, Biogas harness facilities and Biogas based GenSet systems. These systems are capable of generating electricity to fulfil the self-sustenance of the Plants, from where energy is harnessed in the form of biogas. Some of these STPs are successfully operating for more than ten years for Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board with consistent and enhanced power generation from biogas in Chennai, India. The fine-tuned operations have helped in reducing energy requirement from State Electricity Grid/Diesel Generator Set (DG) and at the same time sustaining its sole purpose, sewage treatment.
The Sewage Treatment Plants at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi are two among the four sewerage treatment plants
of Chennai City executed by WABAG during 2006. Both STPs were designed based on Conventional ASP for capacities of 110 MLD and 54 MLD respectively. Other two STPs of 60 MLD at Koyambedu and 40 MLD at Nesapakkam were executed by other contractors. In all these STPs, emphasis has been laid into sludge treatment and generation of power from biogas, utilizing the same to run the whole treatment plant thereby significantly reducing the electricity import from the State Electricity Grid.
The treatment of sewage is typically done through primary treatment for removal of solids/grit etc., followed by biological treatment in conventional activated sludge system. The primary and excess biosludge produced is thickened and digested in anaerobic sludge digestion, producing methane rich biogas and well-digested biosludge suitable for disposal after dewatering in a centrifuge. The biogas produced is collected in a gas holder and used as fuel in biogas engine (1 MW capacity) after passing the same in bio-scrubber for removal of hydrogen sulfide, which is corrosive to the gas engine.
Success of plant operation and achieving even better results is possible through close monitoring and control of process. Dedicated efforts by the technical team provides the consistent successful operations of the plant for not only achieving the desired parameters but also the energy produced by non-conventional energy has helps the environment and eases the burden of the precious resource – “Electric Power”.
