I'm re-listening to all Devil May Cry soundtracks and given how many songs share the theme of how one's demonic heritage makes them want to just go around fkin killing everything in sight, I kind of wish this theme was explored more in the games on a deeper-than-gameplay level

Oh, about the agnus scene! It very much is confirmed as Dante being goofy (and also a little bit strategic) in deadly fortune - it describes the scene as actually Agnus having set it up on purpose to monologue with Dante - but Dante sees through the "script" that Agnus wants him to play and so decides to fuck with him by going "off-script", (he messes with the lights so they shine on him, continues Agnus' lines for him, etc) which pisses off Agnus and starts the fight off in Dante's favour
It is HILARIOUS that there's actually an in-game reason for it. I'm not sure that reason actually scans, because -- c'mon, that scene was pure absurdism. But I love that the creators of this game actually tried to explain it. Thanks for clarifying!
(For anyone unfamiliar with DMC, this is the scene.)

Capello Estate - Fortuna Isola
The Capello Estate is located in Mitis Forest, near Fortuna Castle. An excellent representation of Renaissance architecture, the mansion features large gardens, a dome church, and a large centerpiece fountain. The main hall and staircase feature portraits of the family’s members. The last portrait is dated 1985.
The Capello Estate had once been the seat of House Capello. House Capello distinguished itself as a strong vassal of Lord Sparda, with many of its members serving as men at arms and on the Dark Knight’s governing council during Sparda’s tenure as the island’s feudal lord. After Fortuna was granted it’s independence and Sparda took his leave of the island in 1716, the Capello family remained popular amongst the island’s population, with members of the family serving as knights of the Order of the Sword and one individual reigning as the Vicar of Sparda from 1876 until their death in 1897.
During the 20th century, the family began to decline due to many members dying without issue or any surviving issue.
The last notable member of the Capello Family was Titus Capello, the Supreme General of the Holy Knights during the reign Sanctus’ predecessor. Titus had only one surviving child, a daughter, at the time of his death in 1989.
With his daughter’s disappearance and no surviving heirs from matrilineal or patrilineal lines, the House of Capello as it was known came to an end and the once glorious estate has been abandoned for nearly thirty years and is slowly being overtaken by the forest.

what's your interpretation of the Agnus redux scene in dmc4 where Dante and Agnus try to out-camp each other on stage? 4 was the first dmc I ever played so I used to think Dante was just being goofy and playing with Agnus a little before the boss fight, and the writers were just having fun (this part is probably still true), but now I know more I wonder if Dante was having some kind of manic-depressive episode? (is sanity... the price to pay? for POWER??)
LOL, no, I think Dante was just being goofy that time. I also think the devs were just playing with the audience. DMC2 got a lot of flak for making Dante too serious and quiet, and so in 3 they made him the silly trash-talking counterpart to his straight-man brother, and that was a hit. They just doubled down on this in 4, probably since Nero was playing straight man in that game. Same reason we got Dante's moonwalk in 5; at that point the Ninja Theory devs on DmC had pissed off the fanbase by saying nobody wanted Dante as a "gay cowboy," so ha ha, the Capcom devs gave us a supergay dance scene with a cowboy hat, literally spotlighting Dante with rainbow lighting and special effects, just to drive the point home that yes, Virginia, this hack-and-slash game hero is very much a gay cowboy.
But despite this complete lack of subtlety in every other respect, the devs have only ever addressed Dante's depression in (relatively) subtle ways. It's not visible in his silliness, it's visible in what he doesn't do (like barely speaking in DMC2), and the silliness is a smokescreen that he uses to keep his friends from worrying about him. But for the first time in 5, we got a clear glimpse of what he's like when he's not throwing up smoke -- just sitting in the stinking dark, waiting to die -- and it ain't pretty. So I actually respect the hell out of the devs for making it explicit at last, and treating his depression realistically (if briefly).
