#developed inspection systems for in the first place before we understood germs

Not even a few months ago I was JUST ranting about how so much of the actual implementation of inspection systems operated, ostensibly, by our federal government, just is not and in fact either doesn't happen or is undertaken by the company that's supposed to be subject to inspection, and I specifically mentioned both the USDA and FAA because these are obvious examples of this and now we've got Boeing (for far from the first time, btw) under a spotlight for failing inspections they routinely give themselves rather than being genuinely audited after yet another major failure of theirs cost innocent lives, and children consuming dangerous levels of lead in applesauce, all because we just couldn't be bothered to do or did not fund due diligence on the front end.
