Resto and Custom Muscle From the 2019 Detroit Autorama

A Sure Cure for the Late Winter Blues

For many, the Detroit Autorama is first and foremost about the Ridler Award, which is viewed as the most coveted trophy for custom-car builders. The award was created in 1964 in memory of Don Ridler, who had been commissioned by the show’s organizers to make the Detroit Autorama the greatest automotive extravaganza in the world. The success Ridler enjoyed prior to his untimely death at just 54 years of age prompted the creation of the Don Ridler Memorial Award.

One of the wildest cars in the building, and one of the Great 8 contenders for the Ridler Award, was Sonny Freeman’s 1965 Chevelle named Reflection. Built at Mike Goldman Customs, the Chevelle had such body modifications as a 1967 Chevelle roof, extended rocker panels, machined door handles, lowered wheel openings, a custom billet grille, and lengthened 1967 Chevelle SS hood bulges with custom machined vents. Power comes from an LS7 engine with a Bowler Tremec T56 transmission.

Each year, eight cars are selected to be in the running for the Ridler Award prior to the public opening of the show. The Great 8 are displayed at the main entry doors to Detroit’s Cobo Hall. The entire weekend is abuzz with debate as to which car deserves the Ridler. It was of little surprise when the late Steve Barton’s spectacular Cadillac/Nomad mashup, Cadmad, was declared the Ridler Award winner for 2019.

Harold and Pat Ehlert are the original and current owners of this 1970 Plymouth Superbird. The Limelight wing car was parked in 1973 and restored by Nathan and Paris Ehlert in 2016. A 440ci four-barrel engine rated at 375 hp sends power through a four-speed manual transmission.

Muscle cars have a presence at the Detroit Autorama, but they are not the main attraction. That said, there are enough of our 1960-1974-era muscle cars on display to warrant making the trip to Detroit. The 1970 Monte Carlo SS owned by John and Connie Fifer was remarkable, as was the 1965 Tri-power, four-speed GTO that belonged to Scott Tiemann’s parents, which was looking assembly-line fresh following its restoration. There was a number of original, unrestored muscle cars on hand, including a 4,495-mile unrestored 1969 Z/28. Check out some of the other muscle cars and a few of the wild hot rods that were at the 2019 Detroit Autorama.

The big-block A-body Mopars have been tearing up the dragstrips for decades. Darin Gehr restored his 383-powered four-speed 1968 Dodge Dart GTS to perfection. Paint work was handled by Pat O’Connor.

One of the most incredible restored muscle cars at the Detroit Autorama was John and Connie Fifer’s 1970 Monte Carlo SS. The drivetrain consists of the 360hp, 454ci LS5 engine; M40 Turbo 400 three-speed automatic transmission; and 12 bolt 2.56-geared differential. The Fifer’s Monte Carlo was researched and restored to make sure all numbers and date codes are matching and correct. Every bolt, nut, clip, and clamp was cleaned and replated. All factory chalk marks and paint code markings were accurately reproduced.

Charlie Pate owns this restored 1970 Chevelle SS. The LS5 454/360hp engine, M21 four-speed transmission, and 12-bolt 3.31 Positraction rear provide the ultimate muscle car driving experience. The Cranberry Red SS454 has only travelled 34,482 actual miles and is well equipped with Cowl Induction hood, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, SS five-spoke wheels, bucket seats and console, gauge package, AM/FM radio, and power windows.

Scott Tiemann’s parents, Jerry and Carolyn, purchased their Fountain Blue 1965 GTO at Royal Pontiac on May 21, 1965. The car is absolutely loaded, with options that include the Rally gauge package, wood steering wheel, padded dash, power windows, power steering, mirror group, lamp group, console, AM radio with rear speaker, and rear window defogger. The GTO’s Tri-power 389 is joined to a M20 four-speed transmission and 3.55 Safe-T-Track axle. Scott handled the entire restoration at his shop, Supercar Specialties in Portland, Michigan. Fantastic provenance, history, and restoration make this car a standout, and easily the one car I would have loved to drive home from Autorama.

The 1968 Hurst/Olds owned by James Kryta is one of 515 produced. The Peruvian Silver H/O is powered by a 455ci engine that produced a factory-rated 390 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. A Turbo 400 transmission and 3.90-geared differential finish off the powertrain. Paint and bodywork were performed by Nyle Wing at Wings Auto Art. Scott Tiemann handled the restoration detail and assembly. Chrome work was from A&W Chrome.

Fritz Helmuth owns this one-of-100 1970 Trans Am Javelin, which was restored by Lavine Restorations in Nappanee, Indiana. The 390ci engine is restored to absolutely new condition. A ram-air hood provides fresh air induction for increased horsepower. A BorgWarner T10 four-speed transmission and 3.91 Twin Grip AMC 20 differential combine for spirited acceleration. Dealer-installed Sidewinder pipes and an eight-track radio were hot items in 1970.

For 1970, AMC built 4,116 AMXs. Joe Papelian owns this Golden Lime example, one of 1,632 built with the 390 Go Pack. The AMX features a Ram Air hood, a four-speed T10V BorgWarner close-ratio transmission, a 3.54 Twin Grip rear, and leather seats. Rob Eppler and Willie Shaw performed the mechanical restoration of this outstanding AMX.

Diversified Creations brought out this red 1970 AMX modified with an AMC 401 engine with a 3/4 racing camshaft and a high-rise intake manifold. Also onboard are a 700R4 GM four-speed automatic transmission and a Vintage Air A/C system. Smart updates make for a great-driving AMC with plenty of visual pop.

Mark Bonnet doesn’t mind the manual steering and manual brakes found in his 1964 Dodge 440. The 426ci Wedge engine and 727 TorqueFlite transmission make a perfect combination for street/strip speed and reliability. This Mopar was built at Geno’s Custom Paint and Moe’s Body and Paint.

The Cream, a 1966 Dodge Hemi Charger, is owned by Mark Kersher. It was restored by PSI in Sterling, Michigan, with a numbers-matching 426 Hemi engine built by Ted Spehar. The car originated from the Chrysler Lynch Road Assembly plant.

The 1966 Dodge Charger owned by Mark Lavelle is powered by a 383 V-8. The GG1 Dark Green Poly Charger was restored in loving memory of John Quinn at After Hours Restorations LLC. A 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic and a 3.23-geared 8 3/4 rear were the bread-and-butter combination in 1966.

Black Betty, a 1967 Chevelle SS396 owned by John and Felisha Marecki, was looking strong in day-two attire. The engine is a modified 396/402 big-block with LS5 heads and a Holley 770 Street Avenger carburetor. It’s all about stance. Debra Borsos’ 1967 RS/SS Camaro had plenty of it with the vintage American Racing 200S wheels and BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The Camaro was looking ready for comfortable cruising with its rare fold-down center armrest and column shifter.

This unrestored original 1969 Z/28 Camaro has 4,495 original miles on its DZ302 engine. Diversified Creations had the car on display. An original 2×4 cross-ram manifold was found in the trunk.

This unrestored original Wimbledon White 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra only has 33,000 original miles. It is equipped with the 428 four-barrel engine, four-speed Top Loader transmission, and bucket seats. The rare Cobra was purchased at Dils Motor Company in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

The Ford guys were happy to see Kevin Shelton’s restored 1970 Super Cobra Jet Mach 1. The Shaker hood and Magnum wheels looked great. The highly detailed engine compartment was sporting all the right stickers, details, and factory markings.

Cadmad, a custom 1959 Cadillac, was the 2019 Don Ridler Memorial Award winner. The stunning two-door Nomad-style wagon is powered by a twin-turbo 632-inch big-block Chevy built by Nelson Racing Engines. Jordan Quintal Sr. and his crew at Super Rides by Jordan in Escondido, California, built the car. Owner Steve Barton passed away prior to the completion of Cadmad, but his brother, Craig, displayed the finished car in his memory.

Another Great 8 winner was ZL69, a customized 1969 Camaro owned by Pat and Debbie Moran. The original taillights were replaced with 2012 Camaro taillights in reverse position. A Camaro SS roof was grafted on and chopped 1 inch at the A-pillar. A 6.2L LSA supercharged engine rests comfortably in the Schwartz Industry G Machine chassis featuring rack-and-pinion steering, Ride Tech adjustable coilover shocks, and Baer Brakes.

Brace yourselves, muscle car buddies! This is a real A12 liftoff-hood 440 Six Pack car. But when it was found, it was a cut-up and butchered drag car with the original drivetrain long gone. For that reason, owner Brian Storm decided to build a killer Hot Wheels–style 1969 Super Bee. He had legendary chassis builder Jim Homier of Speed & Custom in Woodstock, Georgia, build the car, with help from Noah Storm. Beautiful paint and bodywork were done by Newberry Bodyshop. A 572ci aluminum Indy Wedge powers the radical Mopar. Gargantuan Budnik wheels complete the radical Hot Wheels theme.

The Doctor’s Orders 1965 Dodge Coronet Hemi two-door sedan is owned by John and Kim Barich. They started with a one-owner Florida car with factory tinted glass and heater delete. The rear springs were relocated, and subframe connectors were installed. Bodywork and paint were handled by PSI Automotive in Sterling Heights, Michigan, while the Hemi was built by Automotive Machine in Fraser, Michigan. The engine features an original 1965 magnesium cross-ram intake, Holley carburetors, Stage V aluminum heads, and TTI long-tube headers.

The Shadowoods Auto Center 1968 SS/A Hemi Barracuda is owned by the Tignanelli Brothers, Jim and Tom. Both brothers have shared driving and wrenching duties. Tom was a Chrysler engineer who helped catapult Chrysler drag racing into the spotlight in the 1960s and 1970s.

Since Chrysler built only 83 LO23 Hemi Darts for 1968, Jerry Helfman decided to build his own Hemi Dart clone car called Red Beauty. The 580hp 426 Hemi features aluminum heads, cross-ram intake, and two 770 Holley carburetors. A Passon Performance A833 four-speed transmission with Hurst shifter sends big torque to a Dana 60 4.10 rear. Special features include a lightweight front end and doors, Lexan windows, A100 seats, and original-style steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps. Gorgeous EW1 white paint and V1W white vinyl top set off this 1970 Challenger R/T, equipped with a 440 Six Pack, a Shaker hood, and a four-speed. According to the owner, the Track Pack with Dana 3.54 rear, R/T stripe, and other options make this E-body a “one of one known to exist.”

2018 Best Driver’s Car: A Record-Breaking Year

There is a heavy stillness in the air, the weight of expectation.

Less than an hour before, our resident pro driver, Randy Pobst, had flung the mighty McLaren 720S around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 1 minute, 29.78 seconds—the fastest lap ever recorded in the history of our Best Driver’s Car competition. Now, he’s powering the 911 GT2 RS down the infamous Corkscrew, the echoes of the Porsche’s barrel-chested bellow, so much like the iconic 935 racer, cascading through the surrounding hills.

A silent crowd clusters around the giant Racepak monitor in the pit garage. The folks from Porsche North America HQ are here, as are Chevy handlers from Detroit, the McLaren and Aston Martin support teams from the U.K., the Lamborghini guys from Italy, a pair of helpful Honda people, and a posse of Motor Trend editors. We hold our collective breath, transfixed by the real-time trace showing the Porsche’s progress around the 2.2-mile track. The clock deconstructs the lap, by fractions of a second. The 911 explodes onto the front straight and dashes for the finish line.

Distance. Time. Time. Distance. Eyes flicker across the screen; synapses snap the calculus.

Let’s back up. Our Best Driver’s Car shootout is not about a lap time. It’s about confidence: the confidence a car gives you when you take it to the limit, be it your own or the car’s. But when the lineup includes four of the most powerful supercars sold in America, lap times add spice to the competition. At stake? Bragging rights. The fastest car around Laguna Seca may not be Best Driver’s Car. But it will be king of one of the world’s most famous road courses.

Along with the McLaren and Porsche, the big dogs of BDC 2018 include Chevy’s refreshed Corvette ZR1 and Lamborghini’s Huracan Performante. “Seven hundred horsepower is the new 500 horsepower,” Chris Walton muses as he eyes this 2,786-horsepower quartet. And 500 hp is the new middle ground, with the 600-hp BMW M5 and 400-hp Audi TT RS bracketing a group that includes the 460-hp Mustang GT with Ford’s Performance Pack 2, plus Aston Martin’s all-new 503-hp Vantage and the 505-hp Alfa Romeo Stelvio Q4 Quadrifoglio.

Wait … an SUV in BDC? Yep. The Stelvio is so fast and agile, it damn near defies the laws of physics. It’s a driver’s … er, SUV.

Power isn’t everything, however, and the final three cars making the cut this year did so on the quality of their chassis rather than the output of their engines—though with 306 hp from just 2.0 liters, the turbocharged four-banger under the hood of the Honda Civic Type R has the fifth-highest specific output of this year’s field. Joining the Type R are Kia’s Stinger GT, whose poise had impressed us during last year’s COTY evaluations, and Mazda’s MX-5, back with a 17-percent boost in power and other detail tweaks.

Why no Ford GT? Of course we asked, and Dearborn initially agreed to send one of its low-slung, 647-hp supercars. But two weeks before we were due to start testing, Ford suddenly pulled the car, for reasons the PR department requested we not make public. Send your emails to Ford Motor Company. Maybe they’ll tell you why one of the most exciting driver’s cars ever to carry the Blue Oval wasn’t at BDC.

ROUTE 198

As usual, BDC opens on Route 198 in the sun-bleached hills of Central California. Our 4.2-mile test section, closed to traffic by the California Highway Patrol, allows judges to evaluate the contenders on a real-world road, albeit in closed-course safety. Climbing about 1,000 feet and crossing the San Andreas Fault en route to a turnaround point at the top of the hill, it’s a bewitching mixture of quick corners and mid-pace sweepers (if triple-digit speeds can be counted as “mid-pace”), with humps and heaves that test the limits of suspension travel, shock tuning, and chassis balance. The downhill run puts a different set of loads through the chassis and a spotlight on braking, stability, and steering precision.

Route 198 always throws us some unexpected moments. The monstrously fast 911 GT2 RS causes sharp intakes of breath for some judges when they arrive at corners with a wooden brake pedal and no sign of retardation. The culprit turns out to be the ultra-stiff sport setting for the shocks: It’s calibrated purely for track work, and using it on bumpy Route 198 means the Porsche’s front wheels can be in the air at a critical braking point, causing extreme ABS intervention. “Hated this car on the way down the hill!” Frank Markus gripes as his pulse rate returns to normal.

There are sidelong glances at the Corvette, too. Everyone loves the Herculean supercharged V-8 under the hood, its ferocious power accompanied by a volcanic wall of sound. But no one loves the chassis. The massive brakes haul the ZR1 down from dizzying velocities with insouciant ease, and the hyper-aggressive turn-in response is backed up by impressive front-end grip. After that, it all falls apart, the rear axle failing to provide support on corner entry or traction on corner exit. The big ’Vette is a tail-happy handful. We had all seen the footage of GM product development boss Mark Reuss casually looping a ZR1 into the wall while pacing the Detroit Grand Prix. Now we understood how easily that could happen. “The ZR1 needs to come with warning labels,” Ed Loh mutters.

The Audi TT RS seems quick and has that distinctive five-cylinder thrum that has defined performance Audis since the original Quattro Coupe. But the suspension lacks travel and feels underdamped, leaving the little coupe bucking and bouncing its way up Route 198. “A tad disconcerting,” Erick Ayapana notes.

Thanks to the super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that come with the Performance Pack 2, the Mustang GT has a ton of mechanical grip. But it feels clumsier and less composed than the Chevy Camaro SS 1LE that impressed us so much in 2016. “It’s hard to have a lot of confidence in this car,” Mark Rechtin grimaces.

There are pleasant surprises, though, like the Aston Martin Vantage. “It’s fascinating to drive the Vantage on U.S. roads after Jonny Lieberman and I tried it in Scotland,” Jethro Bovingdon says. “Over there it seemed a real monster—wide, stiff, and always shouting at you to drive faster. On 198, it’s different but no less engaging. The whole vibe is one of effortless control, and the car hums with feedback.”

Although at entirely different ends of the BDC spectrum, the McLaren 720S and Mazda MX-5 perform as expected. Those of us lucky enough to have spent time in the 720S beforehand knew the big Mac’s endless surge of acceleration, delicately detailed steering, outstanding brakes, and remarkably fluent ride would impress first-timers. And the MX-5 did what Miatas have always done best: offer one of the purest driving experiences you can get, at any price.

Honda’s Civic Type R is another crowd pleaser, and not just because of its remarkable engine and precise gearshift. At $35,595, it’s the second-cheapest car in this year’s shootout (just a couple hundred dollars more than the Miata), but the chassis feels like a million bucks on Route 198. Tremendous front-end grip is complemented by a rear end that tracks faithfully, regardless of throttle condition and road surface. “Incredibly capable and confident and easy to drive fast,” Scott Evans gushes.

BMWs have underwhelmed us recently, so not many editors expected the new-generation BMW M5 to feel so effortlessly fast and supremely composed. The engine is staggeringly good, a 600-hp iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove. Traction and chassis balance are terrific for a big, heavy sedan. The steering is linear and consistent though still lacking the delicious tactility that once defined Munich’s best sport sedans. “It’s a family car and a sports car at the same time,” Miguel Cortina smiles.

Kia’s Stinger GT and Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio Quadrifoglio also win hearts, because both outperform our expectations. “Beneath the slightly soft-edged responses is a chassis of real balance and a subtle, nuanced delivery,” Jethro notes after stepping out of the Kia. Chris swoons as he exits the Alfa, impressed by its exhilarating twin-turbo V-6, sure-footed chassis, and sharp steering. “Wow! Way better than I had ever hoped it would be.”

Jonny had been saying for months that the Lamborghini Huracan Performante was a supercar to rival Ferrari’s 488—last year’s BDC winner—and the McLaren 720S. Those of us who hadn’t driven it were skeptical. Flashy, loud Lamborghinis have tended to overpromise and underdeliver; the Aventador’s last place in 2012 is a case in point.

A thigh-high wedge of weapons-grade machismo, the Huracan Performante turns heads wherever it’s parked. Early History of Bill Thomas 427 Big-Block Conversions for Nickey Chevrolet Lives in This 1967 Camaro

History is truly the discipline of keeping an accurate record of events and stories. Muscle car people are often history buffs. Some revel in racing history, some are fascinated with factory assembly processes, some obsess over owner history, and some delight in digging up new information. Dean Klein is the quintessential history buff/muscle car aficionado. His historical penchant often drives him to uncover lesser-known stories of 1960s and 1970s muscle cars. Dean is making sure that no one forgets the Bill Thomas Race Cars story.

In the early 1960s, Bill Thomas rose to prominence via his involvement as a research and development specialist with General Motors’ racing program. He designed and built the Cheetah as GM’s response to the Shelby Cobra. He worked with Chevrolet in the development of various powertrain and chassis combinations for Stock and Super Stock racers. He was also contracted by Chevrolet in late 1966 to perform big-block conversions on the West Coast for the newly introduced 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. About that same time, Nickey also contracted Dick Harrell to perform big-block conversions in the Midwest.

Dean owns one of the California-based Bill Thomas Race Cars conversions, this Butternut Yellow 1967 Camaro. In December 1966, a gentleman in California purchased the car, originally an SS350, new for his girlfriend. The relationship ended sometime in mid-1967, and he got the car back. He wasn’t satisfied with the performance of the small-block engine, so Nickey Chevrolet, then “the largest performance parts dealer in the country,” says Dean, commissioned Bill Thomas Race Cars to convert the car to Nickey big-block status.

Dean has the original Bill Thomas Race Cars conversion paperwork for the Camaro, dated October 19, 1967. While most of the Bill Thomas conversions used 427-inch Corvette engines, this car received a “cheater” 427 engine that came in at 467 ci. The car was also equipped with a 12-bolt Posi rear with 3.07 gears. Best guess is that the owner was interested in high-speed highway cruising instead of quick acceleration. A “Bill Thomas Traction Kit” (a set of traction bars) was also installed, as was a set of “special mufflers,” a set of Rader wheels, and a set of “Perrelli” (sic) tires.

The original Camaro SS350 cost about $2,800 new in December 1966. The Nickey-Thomas big-block conversion cost $4,951.36. That puts the total cost of the car close to $7,750. In 1967 dollars, that was easily $2,000 more than the price of a nicely equipped 1967 427/435hp Corvette.

Those wheels are a significant piece of the Nickey-Thomas legacy. Manufactured by Rader Wheels, they were advertised in 1967 as the Nickey/Bill Thomas Camaro Wheel, available in 14- and 15-inch sizes at $120 for a set of four. “I have only seen three sets of original Nickey/Rader wheels ever,” says Dean. “I was able to buy two sets. I paid $1,300 for one set that needed to be restored, and $2,800 for the set that is now on the car, not including center caps.” Quick math shows he spent more than $4,000 just for the proper wheels for this Camaro. That’s dedication.

Bill Thomas Race Cars would end up doing just a small number of 1967 Camaro big-block conversions under the arrangement with Nickey. The cost of shipping cars from California to Chicago made the partnership cost-prohibitive. Nickey then turned to Dick Harrell to perform the big-block conversions, and by the end of 1967, Bill Thomas Race Cars was no longer connected to Nickey Chevrolet.

Dean came to own the Camaro thanks to Bill Thomas himself. He and Bill started working together in the 1990s when Dean’s company, Little Detroit Collectibles, was planning to make die-cast versions of the Nickey/Bill Thomas Camaros.

“While doing that research I sat down with Bill Thomas on a number of occasions, and he kept taking about this yellow car,” Dean recalls. “A couple of years later I was following up with Bill, and he told me he had been called by the owner of that yellow car. I asked him to find out whatever happened to it, and it turned out that owner still had it. So Bill got it for me.”

When Dean took possession of the Camaro in 2004, “it was in pieces,” he says. And not just disassembled—the original owner had started to turn it into a full-blown race car, cutting some of it up in the process. During the restoration, “anything that wasn’t original on the car I put repo stuff on there,” says Dean. “I intentionally did that so people could recognize what had been changed.”

The original Bill Thomas big-block was gone, but thanks to his relationship with Bill, Dean had Bill’s son, Bill III, build a date-code-correct 427 to the original 1967 specs. It even has a Weiand intake manifold “out of Bill Thomas’ stash,” says Dean.

Today only three examples of the Nickey-Thomas conversions are known to exist. And since Dean’s car was converted in October 1967, it is possibly the last big-block conversion completed at Bill Thomas’ Anaheim shop while in partnership with Nickey.

At the dawn of Camaro big-block conversions in 1966, Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago contracted with Bill Thomas Race Cars in California to do the conversion work on West Coast cars. Documentation for this 1967 Nickey-Thomas Camaro includes a Bill Thomas Race Cars work order from 1967 that was written and verified by Ron Ogilvie. Current owner Dean Klein also has a letter of authenticity from Bill Thomas and a complete three-owner history.

The original big-block was gone when Dean Klein bought the car, but Bill Thomas’ son built an engine using a date-correct 427 block. The engine is equipped with a Bill Thomas BT550 cam, a Bill Thomas–modified Weiand intake manifold, and a Holley 3310 carburetor.

The simple interior features basic black bucket seats, no console, and a standard black steering wheel with an SS center horn button. A Stewart-Warner Green Line 8,000-rpm tachometer is mounted on the steering column with a proper hose clamp, while S-W water temperature and oil pressure gauges are under the dash.

Adding to the distinctive look of the Nickey-Thomas Camaro are Rader Wheels’ rare Nickey/Bill Thomas Camaro Wheels. The Camaro was originally equipped by Bill Thomas with Pirelli tires. The rear currently has N.O.S. Pos-A-Traction cheater slicks. Look closely and you can see the original “Bill Thomas Traction Kit” traction bars just behind the wheels.

The SS350 badges remain installed on the car since that is exactly how it emerged from Bill Thomas Race Cars in October 1967.

Bill Thomas and Dean Klein Connection

This Camaro is just one of several Bill Thomas cars that Dean Klein has owned. One of them, likely the only 1969 L78 Nova to get the Thomas touch, was featured in the Apr. 2012 issue of Muscle Car Review (“One and Only”).

Klein and Thomas also collaborated on a very special Camaro back in 2002, when Chevrolet announced it was going to suspend production of its venerable ponycar.

“I said to Bill, ‘You were the first guy to get his hands on a 1967 Camaro to do conversions. We ought to do some of the last ones,’ Dean recalls. “We decided to take the 35th Anniversary Camaro and turn the LT1s into 427 cars.”

Thomas had publically retired from high-performance work with Chevrolet in the 1970s, and yet somehow he was able to get his hands on not one, but two of the 427 race motors built to power C5-R Corvettes at Le Mans. Bill Thomas III did the fabrication work required to fit that motor in the Camaro SS—“everything was custom on that car,” Dean recalls—and once they got the motor dialed in, it recorded 1,240 hp. To the rear wheels. “And remember, this was in 2002, when there was no such thing as 1,000hp street cars.”

Dean took the finished car to the York US30/Muscle Car Madness show, where he happened to cross paths with Bill Jenkins. In conversation, the Grump admitted he and Thomas had been involved with the race motor’s development.
