Detective funnies Centaur Publications 1938–1942 --- Centaur consisted of Centaur Publications, Inc. and the Comics Corporation of America. Comics published by both of these publishers were advertised together and referred to as being published by the "Centaur Group" in those ads. Later comics by Comic Corporation of America were also advertised together, including Amazing Man Comics which had also been part of the "Centaur Group." Centaur almost never put any brand identification on their covers, and instead used internal ads to connect their titles. Several additional companies have historically been lumped under "Centaur" on the grounds that the titles they published were later purchased and continued by Centaur Publications, Inc. The earliest of these were the Comics Magazine Company, Inc. and Chesler Publications, Inc., both of which sold titles to Ultem Publications, Inc. Many sources include these predecessors as Centaur issues, but the companies are all distinct, with different ownership. Ultem in turn sold all four of their titles to Centaur Publications, Inc., which is the proper beginning of this group. Dangerous Liesis the type of movie you expect to find on TV — simple, basic, but enjoyable. The film won’t linger in your brain for long but does manage to entertain…

Cassel: This article accomplishes many things. Though I have a few quibbles with bits of style and phrasing, it’s on the whole very impressive. Its great accomplishment is providing a broad picture through three or so main specific stories that illustrate the impact of a little-known industry that concerns our daily lives.

The main areas the journalism focuses on are biology, medicine/health, industry, law, and animal rights. It defines a problem and then zeroes in on the story of those scientists that have defined the problem in detail, thus explaining the problem in comprehensible language. It then offers them a platform to propose their solutions.

The stories that Chesler uses to highlight these issues are: the journey of horseshoe crabs to a facility that harvests their blood and back to the ocean, the scientists that have been inspired by their research on the crabs to study the effects this has on their biology, the use of horseshoe crab blood in detecting E. coli, and Chesler’s own story of following the scientists around.

Chesler weaves these stories together to create a broad picture. By inserting herself into the story, she puts the reader into her shoes as a curious, inquisitive spectator, able to learn about scientific jargon and relevance that would otherwise be inconvenient to learn about on one’s own without training. She also employs a conversational style reminiscent of radio journalism that further adds to accessibility. Though it is not representative of traditional print journalism, its effect is not to be downplayed at the expense of other research she included in the article.

I just read in Jonathan Kern’s “Sound Reporting: The NPR Guide to Audio Journalism and Production” some advice from producer (?) Barry Gordemer: “It’s most interesting talking to people when they’re doing something… There might be something about his activity that clues you into his location” (80). The idea is to find in a place a scene that brings out in the interviews the character of the place, person, activity. Chesler accomplishes this to huge effect in her piece, both at the beginning in the harvesting facility and later on when she’s with the scientists. It’s a powerful tool that she absolutely nailed.

By relying on both her conversations with the scientists studying horseshoe crabs and her own research into the medical industry and biology of the crabs, she is able to bridge the historical, scientific and literary to present a picture of a situation that exists out of public consciousness. Though relying on the scientists to a great extent helps the article with understanding this aspect, her article fails to provide complementary time to other perspectives, such as those professionals in the medical industry harvesting the blood. This manifests in some hypotheticals about the degree to which those professionals know the effects their industry has on the crabs and some implicit bias against them.

It is, however, a good piece of investigative journalism on an obscure, interesting subject with a killer lead and sufficient length to provide an introduction to the topic while not exhausting the reader with length or level of detail.

"I was terrified. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the idea, to be honest," Amy candidly explained in an interview with Today. Upon giving birth to three boys - Hunter, Jackson, and Kaden - Amy and Mike received some more unexpected news: they were all born with craniosynostosis, a rare birth defect wherein the skull is unable to develop properly due to the plates not properly fusing together. They were the first set of triplets to all be born with craniosynostosis. Not only that, the chance of each boy having the same rare condition is one in 500 trillion, according to CBS New York. Following the successful surgery, Hunter, Jackson, and Kaden had to wear helmets nearly all day for the next six-to-nine months. The molecular and neural mechanisms underlying these sensory functions remain poorly defined. The stretch-gated ion channel PIEZO2 has been shown to be essential for aspects of mechanosensation in model organisms. Methods We performed whole-exome sequencing analysis in two patients who had unique neuromuscular and skeletal symptoms, including progressive scoliosis, that did not conform to standard diagnostic classification. In vitro and messenger RNA assays, functional brain imaging, and psychophysical and kinematic tests were used to establish the effect of the genetic variants on protein function and somatosensation. Results Each patient carried compound-inactivating variants in PIEZO2, and each had a selective loss of discriminative touch perception but nevertheless responded to specific types of gentle mechanical stimulation on hairy skin. The patients had profoundly decreased proprioception leading to ataxia and dysmetria that were markedly worse in the absence of visual cues. However, they had the ability to perform a range of tasks, such as walking, talking, and writing, that are considered to rely heavily on proprioception.
