Destiel Fic Recs

Who needs to stuff your face with turkey when you can stuff your brain with fanfic? Fresh out of the oven, please enjoy these fic recs.

Raise the Black by valleydean (emmbrancsxx0) @valleydean (Explicit, 246k)

There are passion projects and then there is Raise the Black which takes it to a whole new level. It's not surprising that the author of The Shawnee Trail and A Ghost Story knows how to write historical fiction, but there are so many gorgeous bits of pirate life in this fic from the superstitions to the metaphors tied to the sea. 

The story is a Pirate AU. A chance encounter has left Cas, an officer from the Royal Navy, with a lasting obsession with Dean Winchester, the notorious pirate Captain of the Impala. When presented with the opportunity to defect and save his son from the abusive practices of the Royal Navy, Cas finds himself a part of Dean’s crew. 

I cannot overstate how good this one is. The underlying pirate mythology and superstition, the horny sparring, the epic battle scenes and of course the incredibly unhinged Dean and Cas that drive this story. The story had me anxious, like literally unable to focus on work because I had to know what happened.

It's @valleydean so she gives us a happy ending, but she makes us pay dearly for it in angst (so sexy of her really). 

And it isn't just the Destiel. The casting is phenomenal. I would die for pirate Meg. The use of the younger generation (Jack, Emma, Claire, Kaia) is amazing. Sam, Benny and Charlie as pirates. Truly we get so many great characters in this one y'all.

Without giving too much away, I'll just day that this one falls into the sweeping epic category and the results are staggering.

o weary traveler by dothraki_shieldmaiden @dothwrites (Explicit, 107k)

OK. So you know when you are in like Chapter 1 of a fic and already know it's going to be one of your favorites? That was this fic for me.

A mash-up of the Odyssey and Beauty and the Beast, this fic grabbed me and refused to let go. When Dean and his crew are shipwrecked on an island, they inadvertently anger its inhabitant, Castiel. Cas, an exiled angel, decides to take revenge, culminating in a Beauty and the Beast style pact for Dean to accept punishment on behalf of his wayward crew. 

Cas in this fic is very much an ancient being lacking the human perspective and Dean is just some guy who hunts monsters. It's my favorite dynamic. The way they dance around each other and eventually come together is beautiful to watch.

Throw in some delightful worldbuilding and poetic prose and you have a powerhouse of an epic tale.

The Common Hours by quiettewandering @wanderingcas (Mature, WIP 29k so far)

I very rarely recommend WIPs, so you know when I do it's because I think there's something special about the fic. I honestly think this one and the process of getting a bit more information each week is worth diving into, even if you are normally a "wait until it's done" kind of reader (and if not, this one is worth at least marking to be read with stars and highlights and little hearts).

The fic is a twisty mystery that has me throwing out theories every chapter. Cas is an amnesiac trying to recover from trauma he doesn't understand or remember. Luckily, he met Charlie who has been helping him rebuild his life. But Cas is haunted by half memories and a forgotten life, especially the memory of a man with green eyes who inhabits his dreams.

I don't want to say too much because half of the joy of this fic is pulling at threads and watching to see how it unravels. I'll just leave it at this: the story is captivating and fresh and these versions of the characters instantly grabbed me and wouldn't let go.

Vibrato by Tiamatv  (Explicit, 69k)

Tiamatv really does write some bangers. I couldn't put this one down. They are both disasters in this fic, but in a way that makes you to hug them and smoosh their faces. Dean meets a cute boy, has a full blown bi panic, realizes he was an ass, and strikes up a friendship that morphs into a friendship with benefits that morphs into basically a long term relationship but they're both idiots. It's idiots to lovers (but still idiots) at its finest.

Oh and also Cas is a super old genetic vampire. Whoops. One of the most delightful things about this fic is how well tiamatv captures the ancient and terrible being and also just some accountant dynamic that makes Cas so deeply loveable.

Despite some heavy stuff, this one is fluffy cotton candy most of the time and it's really about their irresistible dynamic. It is immensely readable.

The Sweetest Con by aimforsplendor @aimforsplendor (Mature, 19k)

If you are looking for some fairly low angst fun, this DeanCasBang (Taylor's Version) entry is an absolute delight. Dean and Sam are Robin Hood type con men using tech to steal from the rich and give to those who need it. They've finally found the head of a crime network, a billionaire resembling a particularly prominent and news worthy one recently which makes it fairly cathartic actually. But the mission is threatened when Dean gets sidetracked by a particular blue-eyed hottie.

This one is plain fun with a healthy dose of humor and really likeable characters. This one is truly just readable. Fun and fairly light and with enough interesting turns you keep you on your toes. 

Anything You Can Do by FagurFiskur (Explicit, 21k)

From the Dean Winchester is an absolute disaster genre, this is a surprisingly sweet, crack-taken-seriously smutty romp. 

Dean overhears his soon to be ex-girlfriend Daphne talking to a friend about how their mutual rebound relationship isn't working, especially because her gay ex-fiance, Castiel, was better in bed. Dean can't possibly let that stand. 

So he does the only logical thing and tracks Cas down. And hooks up with him. So he can win at the sex. Even though he's totally straight.

Tell me more about that AU were the Winchesters and Castiel are in the One Piece World.

PD: because of you I did my 100° rewatch of Supernatural. Man, I did really miss that show.

It's a good show!!

I haven't really thought about it much yet! Generally, I would set it very early on in S13. I am currently toying with setting it post 13x06 Tombstone, but with the change that Jack doesn't run off. The fact that Castiel fixed the situation for him (the guard survived) is both beneficial but also an issue going forward. Because if Jack uses his powers and it backfires, Cas will be there to fix it, right? It leads to a dangerous mix of "there's a part of me that is evil and monstruous, but what makes me evil and monstruous also makes me useful for Dean and Sam" and "if the world blows up, Cas will fix it :3".

So when he opens a portal into another world, one of Team Free Will's main concerns is that the kid will a) blow up that world if he's not under parental supervision or b) topple the interdimensional card house that Billie warned Dean about.

They're not sure how it works with world within worlds, because for them, this is world that exists as fiction within their own dimension. (Much like the Scoobynatural episode, but they haven't experienced that yet at that point) Castiel probably has some complex mathematical equations to philosophize about whether this is real or a pocket dimension created by Jack. But whatever metaphysical reality applies they can still get hurt and they don't want to change the world in a way that means Dean is going to see his face appear in the actual real world manga, Carver Edlund's Supernatural books are bad enough.

I don't know for sure where the portal would drop them apart from straight into the ocean. Would they start where Luffy started, in the East Blue? Or would they land on the Grand Line? When would this be set in the OP storyline? Are they already in the New World? I imagine that Jack quickly gets involved with Luffy's crew because he knows the story, he knows where to have adventure. And I think that's what he cares about at this point? Parents at work, kid is bored, might as well have an adventure (and he completely loses track of time and the portal back home.)

In any case, TFW's goal is to find Jack before something bad happens. And since this is Destiel, Dean and Cas probably also have to figure out their romance while they're sailing X'D

(I assume that Baby shows up in the world too, like in Scoobynatural, just as a ship, which Dean has a fit over. But since this is a goofy world, he can just navigate as if it was a car and it miraculously works. It has no weapons, but it has Cas as defense and compass, which is why they can also cross the Calm Belt. They also have radio and whatever the Teleschnecke / Den Den Mushi is called in English reception at all times due to Sam's wifi powers)

I don't think they'll pose as pirates. I'm not sure what cover Dean comes up with (since he's the one who is familiar with the manga/ anime). He could say that they usually hunt monsters or that they're researchers, "not from around here" and that they are looking for their kid that ran away. Everyone can tell that there's something bizarre/ not quite right about them. Maybe they assume they are from an island in the New World or maybe even from the Red Line.

At first they will have absolutely no idea where Jack is and angel radio doesn't work here (but the air is full of voices, Cas barely can hear anything because the world is constantly screaming at him when he tries to communicate with Jack).

I think it would be fun if the first clue they get is because a wanted poster is issued for Jack because he destroyed a whole fleet of ships just like that (and this is where TFW starts to worry, because sure, this happens in the manga too without much fanfare, but those are hundreds of people that technically die). But since he has such fire power, different fractions are becoming interested, especially if he hangs out with the Straw Hats. Does that mean he's a pirate? A threat to the World Government? Or could he be used?

Also, I think it would be even more fun if Dean's got a lot of half knowledge about the world because he hasn't really been keeping up and he doesn't know what's speculation he read on reddit (or wherever) or what's confirmed truth, but he is confidently wrong (or shockingly correct) about things. He does know about Crocodad and just assumes it's real. Is it? Will it be because Dean believes it? Who knows! *lol*

While Jack will be having an adventure with the main characters, I wonder who Team Free Will will end up with working together. Revolutionary Army?

Does this AU have an actual plot? Not really. I don't know how to do a "case fic" format in the One Piece world X'D Like, I have read One Piece but I don't know how to sneak in a canon compliant contained adventure. Pick an island with an issue, fix the issue, sprinkle in some character development or lore that ties in to the bigger narrative, sail on? I guess. *lol*

P.S. I think Cas has a female vessel, but due to the nature of the world the laws of physics don't apply to his boobs so not wearing a bra and having his shirt all open is no problem at all. X'D (It is a problem for Dean though, who has thoughts and feelings about their recently resurrected buddy looking like that.)

One based off the Mummy, one that's a mummy/national treasure crossover LMAO, one off Jurassic Park, one off Twister, one off Beauty & the Beast kinda, one off princess & the frog, one kinda princess diaries 2/how to lose a guy BUT I actually have an insane idea I came up with recently that would be a uhhhhhhh crossover I guess........I'm giggling as I think about it

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? if I post I am going to make myself finish but I have some I've never posted that I doubt I'll finish (one's a rivals fake dating destination wedding)

16. What are your writing strengths? I'd say melancholic fluffy humor and banter, others have told me world building and being lowkey emotional

17. What are your writing weaknesses? being concise and angst actually- I struggle with that sometimes

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Amazing when people can do it, but I tend to avoid writing it since I'm not fluent.

19. First fandom you wrote for? High School Musical and then I took a massive break and started with Top Gun again.

This is not your usual supermegahorny ask, but I'm reading a pirate AU (you know me - it's Destiel).

But both Hob and Dream (and the Corinthian) could be such great pirate Captains!? Like, they'd be rivals at sea, but whenever they'd run into eachother in a tavern they'd flirt outrageously and end up fucking eachother dry. The whole crew would know, of course, and be amused about it.

Please consider: ex navy Hob who was a Big Deal in the British navy but ended up going rougue because it was generally terrible and the colonialism of it all eventually started to bother him. He has a small but loyal crew and he's just doing his best out there u know.

Meanwhile: very much established pirate Dream who looks down his long pretty nose at Hob because umm he's not a proper pirate he's just a navy captain on a power trip. Until Hob saves his life somehow and Dream has to reevaluate his judgements.

Also: the Corinthian used to be Dream’s first mate but got fired for general homicidalness. He meets Hob who is like OK what if I hire you and you can just hang out here until Dream caves and takes you back on? And basically the Corinthian ends up in a very strange custody arrangement between Dream and Hob while the sexual tension grows. Possibly they have a threeway sword fight at some point with extra homoerotic stabbing.

They're all fucking each other at every opportunity of course. Not a lot of piracy gets done and the Authorities are like huh. Why has the pillaging gone DOWN recently? And its literally because of all the fucking. They're pillaging each other's butts babyyy.

here are 5 fics that i read over the last 4-5 months that are over 100k and that i really loved:

Talk Some Sense to Me (Kenopsia) - 244k fix it fic also known as the bunkers fic because they travel around the us opening up the old mol bunkers for hunters (one of THEE smuttiest fics i've read in a while)

Baby's Driver - 142k baby driver au with selectively mute dean (this one is rated E but there is no smut)

A Million Little Times - 123k fix it fic where cas comes back from the empty with no memory (i am not 100% sure but i want to say this one was also rated E but didn't have any smut)

Raise the Black - 246k destiel pirate au. GOD this one is so good. i LOVED the way that dean was written in this one.

Heavyweight - 206k 1920's boxing au. i almost didn't read this one because i usually prefer au fics where they're getting together for the first time but OH MY GOD im so glad i read it!!!! the boxing scenes are sooooo fucking good and the destiel scenes are even better!

also im gonna shout out american oracle (weird as hell bunker horror fic) here too because it's long but under 100k and i loved it SO FUCKING MUCH!
