My mother was the first feminist I knew.

By the time my mother had me in 1985, she had already traveled to over 35 countries on her own. Ammi’s travels took her to countries far and wide. She was hand picked by Pakistan International Airlines to attend a delegation dinner with President Ronald Regan in the U.S. She climbed the Great Wall of China. She partied at a discotheque in Greece. Oh, and how can I forget the highlight she boasted about the most from her travels? “I shook hands with Yanni after attending his amazing concert at the Acropolis,” she would say with a smug expression on her face. Despite societal and familial disapproval, she chose to pursue the call of her heart. It is my duty to do the same as I find myself retracing her rebellious footsteps. Irrespective of how her health shifted, she did not allow the cancer to stop her from fulfilling all of her life’s goals. In fact, if man, society or family said “you can’t” she shouted back “watch me!” As I retrace my maternal history, in order to better understand who I am and where I come from, I realize that women like my mother and I are breaking centuries old traditions. My maternal great-grandmother was only 11 years old when her marriage was arranged. My maternal grandmother was 14 when she was married. As the generations go by in my maternal lineage, there is visible, commendable progress in women’s liberation, literacy, thought, sexuality and independence. It is humbling to learn about all of the QUEENS that came before me, who have defied, disobeyed and disrupted ( @monaeltahawy ) society, in their own unique, intersectional ways, and have fought to gain complete control of our destiny. This has taught me an important lesson: there is nothing more valuable than my freedom and liberty.
