Week Three: Notes
History of Western Design
Timeline: BC / AD -> 1450 - 1880 / 1910
BC / AD: During this time period design was based on communication with the introduction of patterns, symbols, letters and illustrations as alphabets. This form of design was widely spread across the globe however was very secluded to the location due to the lack of travel. From this many forms of type and symbols were developed such as, hieroglyphs, the Greek alphabet and Chinese movable type.
1450: During this time period the scientific revolution and the ‘enlightenment movement’ took place. This effected art and design as print and illustrations were used to communicate the findings and emotions directly relates to the world changes. Though this era had heavy emphasise on science, design was also revolutionised with the creation of the Gutenberg Press and further printing processes.
1880-1910: Arts and Crafts Movement: This movement was post the industrial revolution with the introduction of heavy use of machinery and factories founded by John Ruskin and William Morris. They opened the Morris & Co in 1880 to revive the Beaty of hand made goods. During this era there was an emphasis on craftsmanship over style and mass production. This lead to exclusivity for those who get their hands on said goods increasing the value of the higher quality, unique and limited edition products.

Though I cannot understand the Korean voiceover, the graphics are a clear indicator of the point. The “-=+” graphic was very clever and over all the video was successful in displaying a representation of Mies van der Rohe’s career.
