Design Jam 1

6th March 2017

For our first design jam we focussed on designing for the small screen. We were to replicate the design of Facebook from the app on our phones. This tasked proved to be quite challenging as you really had to tune into the fine details of the different pages on the Facebook app. 

I teamed up with Kathy to replicate the design of the Facebook home page and notifications page. We used three different adobe applications (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) to replicate the design. We used colour match to reproduce the exact colours of the social media application. Replicating the small icons from Facebook proved to be quite challenging and time consuming, as there are so many different icons all representing different events.

The next task for our design jam was to take our replicated images and redesign the Facebook app. 

Firstly we wanted to pick a new colour identity for the platform to completely change the feel of the app. I designed the home page, while Kathy designed the notification centre. 

The idea behind the home page was for it to open into a swiping menu as soon as you open the app. The background behind the menu icons would reflect which icon you are on (the home page would be behind the home icon, and notifications behind the notification icon etc..) however it would be slightly blurred. This gave the user a chance to quickly choose which part of the app the would like to access as soon as the app was opened. I do however think that this slows down the user experience and functionality of the app as most people would want to immediately open to their home news feed. 

The notification centre follows a similar theme with a reappearance of the circles and the menu options. This idea stemmed from the current Facebook notification centre showing every notification that you receive with no form of categorisation. The extra step that this ‘new’ design requires the user to do before reaching their notifications does take more time although providing a more minimalistic look.

New York Times Design Jam

For our second Design Jam, we were tasked with recreating a News website that was mainly text based, and we chose the New York Times. It has so many different text components, that we found using the paragraph styles function in Illustrator helped greatly with making everything look well put together. Next week, we will be redesigning the same website, so hopefully that goes well!

NYT Website Typography - Helvetica Conversion

After defining the grid and replicating the layout, I converted the original Serif typeface (Georgia) into Helvetica to discover how much this impacted the design as a whole. 

I found that the newspaper loses its traditional and classic NYT value and looks more modern and technical. Unlike many other news websites who primarily use San-Serif typefaces (eg. CNN) the NYT relies heavily on their Serif typeface and is one of few who are successfully able to use it on a digital platform while still maintaining legibility.

Design Jam 001 took place on June 26, 2014 and was held at TEAMS Design, an industrial design firm located in the Kinzie Industrial Corridor. Our kickoff event drew a talented bunch of about 40 participants from across Chicagoland. After dinner and a bit of socializing, we gathered to learn about SKOL Manufacturing, a metal fabricator and job shop located in the Ravenswood corridor with capabilities ranging from bending & brake pressing to cutting, welding, and stamping. Then we broke into ideation groups centered on three areas: lighting concepts, outdoor gardens, or Chicago-themed. Over ninety different sketches emerged within an hour and a half. We had an opportunity to come back together at the end of the night and share back what was imagined and get each others' take on what resonated most. 

A few of the most promising and doable concepts have now been mocked up and will be shared back with SKOL in the coming weeks. We'll learn what the manufacturing considerations are with each design and decide how to best move forward with one or more products.

The inaugural design jam received press covereage from the Chicago Tribune and has also been featured on the TEAMS Design blog. We are grateful to all our participants, whose names are listed below. It's exciting to be at the start of this journey together.
