Hey poison, where'd you get your jacket?
found it in the backroom of an old peg station just inside the lobby, right before i left for the desert. it was sittin in the bottom of a locker, covered in what i told myself was dirt. these things were standard issue for valued peg employees back in the day but are a rare sight now. so obviously i take it, clean it off, patch it up a little, and call it my own. most of the modifications didn’t come until after i left the city though.

[[ I said I’d write a thing when I reblogged @lone-wolf-the-killjoy’s contribution committing mercy to @killjoys-and-desertkids’s zone word series, and I had the muse, so here it is! (@ing you two both for credit and in case you were interested at all in reading it.)
Trigger warnings for semi-graphic depictions of injuries (i.e., gore), and death, both of which I shall tag. It’s fairly brief on both accounts (meaning not a major part of the piece), but if you’re uncomfortable with that, this might not be for you. :* ]]
“Wait, wait, pull over.”
“Why?”
Midnight muttered unintelligibly under his breath as he awoke from dozing, slowly sitting up in his seat. This had better be important.
“Jus’ -- look.” Omens leaned over the center console--drawing Midnight’s attention to the fact that he hadn’t buckled his seat belt, despite it being perfectly functional, and his decision to sit in the middle seat--and pointed to a dark shape amid the sand a few hundred meters or so from the road.
“It’s no-”
“Pull over,” Midnight grunted, interrupting Raven’s protest. It could be nothing--a dead coyote, or maybe the remnants of a wreck someone had pulled way off the road--but it was better to double check, just in case.
Raven muttered something that sounded suspiciously like ‘are you fucking serious’, but did as requested, letting the car idle but pulling the parking break. “I’ll wait here, in case it’s trouble,” he sighed, leaning forward to rest his forearms against the steering wheel.
“Yeah, yeah, don’t have to tell me twice.” Midnight unbuckled his seat belt and opened the passenger door. He looked over in mild surprise as the rear door opened and Omens hopped out as well. “You don’t have to come along,” he began, but Omens rolled his eyes and flapped as dismissive hand in his direction.
“I saw it, I made ya pull over, I ought’a come with ya.”
“Whatever you say, kid.” He wasn’t willing to argue over it, especially not if it meant they’d still be on the road later when the sun finally lifted past the rolling hills of sand and brought with it the typical heat of summer. “Come on, then.” He drew his handgun from its holster at his side, thumb on the safety as they moved toward the shape.
He made it out before they were even halfway to it--just wasn’t sure if the poor bastard was still alive--which was long before Omens seemed to have much of an idea of what it was. “Wait here,” he murmured, holding an arm out to stop Omens in his tracks.
“What? No way.”
Stubborn punk.
“Omens,” Midnight sighed, closing his eyes momentarily. “You don’t need to see this.” The boy hadn’t made any indication he’d put two-and-two together, yet, and if Midnight could spare him the grisly details, he was going to do it.
“See what?”
Well. If he planned on spending the rest of his days in the desert, he was going to encounter one eventually, Midnight supposed. Might as well tell him what he was looking at, in case he never wanted to get close enough to actually see it. Or smell it. “That’s a body, kid,” he murmured, turning his attention to fix his gaze on Omens’ face, ensure the boy knew he was telling the truth, and that there was nothing pretty about what he’d find, if he kept going.
Horror slowly spread across Omens’ face as the fact sunk in. “Shit,” he breathed, stumbling a step away from the shape--though they were still a short ways out from it.
“Just wait here, okay?”
Omens slowly nodded.
Midnight continued onward, scanning the desert beyond for any signs of movement as he drew nearer to the prone form in the sand. (If it had been sitting there long, he couldn’t imagine it had gone unnoticed by starving scavengers, and he wasn’t looking to have to face down a desperate animal looking for its next meal.)
The stench reached him first--rotting and burned flesh, sick, and other putrid scents he’d become familiar with long before he’d come to the desert. He could make out the body, by that point--what was left of it, anyway--and his steps faltered as his gaze drifted to the body’s missing leg. That was a lot of blood, pooled around the wound. And it was fresh. Well, not fresh, because if that had been the case, he would’ve seen something running away from the body, and he hadn’t. But it was recent. And too much to have been from a post mortem injury. Which meant
“Oh, shit.”
The kid--a young woman, didn’t look that much older than Omens--was still alive. Was dying, still. Her skin was blistering from being in the sun for so long, bright red and peeling, puss oozing from some of the worst of the blisters. Her lips were cracked, just barely parted. He couldn’t see the rise and fall of her chest, and when he risked (he still wasn’t sure what had driven her to collapse in the first place, could only hope it wasn’t a contagion of some sort) holding a hand above her mouth to check for breath, it took a long while before he felt anything against his palm.
“Dammit,” he breathed, lowering his head and closing his eyes. Slowly, he drew back up to his full height.
“Go back to the truck,” he called to Omens, turning to fix his gaze on the boy’s silhouette. He let out an aggravated growl when the boy failed to move in compliance. (He didn’t want the boy seeing this.) “Omens, go back to the truck.”
(He was probably going to have to go back and get the shovel, bury the poor thing.)
He waited until Omens was steadily making his way toward the truck, back turned to Midnight and the girl, before finally flicking the safety off his gun and leveling it with her head.
“Safe passage, kid,” he murmured. Forgive me, he didn’t.
Midnight could imagine the jolt that ran through both Omens and Raven as the gunshot rang out in the open space. He waited a number of heartbeats in silence, head bowed, before finally flicking the safety back on, holstering his gun, and turning back in the direction of the truck.
Omens had stopped moving, turned back toward Midnight, and when Midnight drew nearer, he could make out the alarm and horror and outrage on the boy’s face. “What did you do?!”
Midnight made no attempt to fight or push back when Omens shoved his hands against his chest. He waited until Omens finally stopped pushing at him before loosely curling his hands around the boy’s elbows. “There’s a shovel under the bench,” he began softly, carefully guiding Omens back in the direction of the truck. “I should try to bury her.” They didn’t have anything to wrap her up in, though, which he wasn’t liking the idea of.
“Why?” Omens mumbled, slowly deflating against Midnight. (If he looked over, Midnight was pretty sure he’d find a few tears on the boy’s cheeks.)
Raven had shut off the car, and was sitting in the passenger seat, door open, facing toward them, by the time they got there.
“There was nothing else I could do,” Midnight answered quietly, gently nudging Omens toward Raven.
But he wished to god there had been.
