9: Discuss deepest fears

“It’s pretty dark in here, huh.”

Of course, as soon as you said that, you heard the scrape of a match on the wood of the closet door, and your world was thrown into a smeared halo of clementine gold, before Droll’s little face melted out of the gloom to look at you, eyes scrunched up with self-importance. You looked up at the coats dangling perilously above you--faux fur, no doubt drier than the old hag that used to wear them, and easy to light up. You swallow, lick your thumb and index finger, and put the match out with a sense of unease. His little smile disappears with the light.

“What’d you do that for?” Shit, you didn’t upset him that much, did you? His voice sounded so much littler all alone in the dark.“You could have lit the coats on fire, Droll. I appreciate your help, but I think I would appreciate you a bit more if the two of us stayed alive, yes?”

He brightens at that, you can hear him shift to look up at you. He didn’t seem to expect words like that, especially from someone like you. You sigh and reach through the dark to find him, picking him up and holding him in your lap. He certainly wasn’t expecting that.

“Are you scared of the dark, Droll?”“No..I’m alright. I know you’re right there, and there isn’t much else in here, so it’s fine.”

You take a stab in the dark. Well, metaphorically.

“Are you scared of being alone?”

He makes a quiet noise in the back of his throat, a dying note of surprise, and you shift a little bit, trying to find a comfortable spot against the wall so you could hold him with one arm and pet him soothingly as well.

“It’s alright. I’ll be right here until we get out.”“What are you scared of most, Droog?”“Well..” You’re glad he can’t see how pale you turn. “I guessed what you’re scared of, so it’s only fair if you guess too.”“Is it snakes? I bet it’s snakes. No! Clowns!”

The last of the time goes rather smoothly, all things considered.
