And a nod to @probablylostrightnow  and @thisonelikesaliens  - a bit of love for my beloved dwarf warden (and excuse me - its been a couple years since I revisited Derry and DA:O and suddenly, I have a burning desire to replay her game...)

06. Ideal mate: Listen. A man who can make her laugh AND get all the things off the high shelves AND is basically the human version of a golden retriever?  As far as she’s concerned, Alistair is her ideal

07. Turn-ons: a sense of humor and kindness - after her rough and abrupt exit from Orzammar, she never underestimates how important true and sincere kindness is

08. Favorite food: hot, sweet tea

09. Crushes: Zevran is a snack, you guys, and Derry is only a mortal woman.  Alistair is her love, her one and only, but she can LOOK still, right?

10. Favorite music: a good, rousing folk song, with plenty of bawdy innuendos and a good beat to dance to.  If it makes Alistair blush, all the better

11. Biggest fear: getting lost to the Deep Roads forever, and becoming like Branka.  She’s lived some of it already, and she dreads going back to deal with her conniving brother.  

12. Biggest fantasy: settling down in a nice, normal, boring, painfully happy life with Alistair.  No blight, no worries about being a Warden and what runs through her veins.  Just her husband, her found family, and maybe a baby or two.  

13. Bad habits: biting her nails

14. Biggest regret: getting forced out of her home without putting up a fight, and believing Bhelen until the very end.  Not being there when her father died. Convincing Alistair to perform the ritual with Morrigan.

15. Best kept secrets: how she got the brands on her face.  It comes out eventually, but even Zevran knows better than to ask her about them until then.

16. Last thought: This is how it ought to be.

17. Worst romantic experience: Definitely watching a very reluctant Alistair and a very determined Morrigan walk off together.  It’s necessary.  She has to be strong and not let him know how much it hurt to see.  This is for their future, but she hates every second of it.

18. Biggest insecurity: Orzammar did some serious damage to her confidence - is she good enough to lead?  Will she only lead the people she’s grown to love to their deaths?  How can she protect them if she couldn’t even protect herself?

19. Weapon of choice: Short sword and a genlock dagger.

20. Role Model: her mother, who was graceful and smart and loving, and was the real ruler behind the Aeducan crown.

Wip Wednesday

I don’t know if you’ve been tagged, but @oxygenforthewicked and @kirkwalls-dumbest pls join me should you feel like it!  Here’s a bit of OT3 DA:0 for fun!

Focusing on her duty, Liana shadowed the riot for another ten minutes, hanging onto the occasional scrap of Derry's voice in the far distance echoing back.  It was hard to hear over the noise, but it had become so familiar to her that somehow she could still find him.  Every time he spoke she felt it, somewhere deep in her chest. He was safe.

His name flickered across the screen of her phone as it picked up his name in every feed.  Photos, videos, moments of fire and death and love captured and sent across the whole of Thedas.  Their boy, their hero.

Darian Tabris, the real Hero of Ferelden.

He was safe.

With a long breath, she tried to clear her head and her heart.

The only altercation she ran into in those last few minutes was one already half-finished, a small cluster of Jennies taking down a few people they claimed were trying to incite violence.  At this point, as much as it pained her to say, it didn't matter if they were paid provocateurs or opportunists.  A good beating would get rid of them regardless.  They were spread too thin for nuance.

At least they didn't kill them, unlike the assassins.

After the fight was over, she found the intersection for her meeting.  Arriving before Zevran, Lia calmed her mind and tried her best not to pace.  Instead she finished her water bottle and chewed on a few dried apricots, for the sugar and for something to do.  The night was far from over.

“Incoming.”

The warning was necessary, because even so she startled when Zevran dropped down from a roof behind her.  Spinning, she was bringing up her hands to defend herself when he abruptly snagged her out of the shadows, pulling her in by the elbow.  Shocked, she was stiff and still as he hugged her, his arms winding tightly around her.  He kissed the top of her head.

It took a second or two, but when she breathed in a shudder and the stiff panic faded, the hug tightened.  

“He is safe.  You are safe.  We are safe,” he told her quietly, and she could hear from the small catch in his voice that the hug wasn't only for her.

Clutching at his back, she returned it fiercely.  One breath, two, and then she pulled back from him with a firm nod.  It was only a small reprieve, but it helped calm the tempest inside of her for now.  There would be no relief until she had them both, but this was enough for the deed that must be done.

“It would be best if you stay-”  Zevran stalled and laughed apologetically as her eyes narrowed.  He lifted both gloved hands to cradle her cheeks, and leaned down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.  “Yes, darling dear.”

“He will confess,”  Lia told Zevran quietly, leaning her cheek into his palm, taking what momentary comfort there was to be had.  It wasn't enough for Howe to die, not with how complicated things were.  They needed an enemy to give to the public to keep Darian firmly in the position of hero, and she could think of no better man to be it than Rendon Howe.

She had promised Coran and Leliana she would get leverage against their enemies so that negotiation was possible.  What had they said?  Beg, borrow, or steal?  The time for begging had passed, she thought, and they had borrowed Anora's.  Now it was time to steal.  They would steal their leverage from the very hands of people who rapaciously stole from the alienage, and from the mages...

And from the Dalish.

Zevran's expression was troubled.  “Even if we can...gently convince him to record a confession, it will be obvious to anyone even remotely trained that it was under duress.  A clean kill and a mocked-up suicide may be better.  If we can find some handwriting samples, I can manage a passable suicide note.”

Lia searched his face.  Zev and Darian had given everything they had to this endeavor, and she'd been holding back.  She couldn't tell anyone this, not even Aeducan, but maybe Zevran would understand.  If they were going to be together, he and Derry should know the full truth.

He should know she was a blood mage.

“Zevran, I will make him confess.”

Just cuz I was thinking of it, this is usually what my OC profiles look like (for Derry and Lia, my DAO protags).  I found that in writing original stuff I needed templates like this to help me keep from getting my characters ‘muddy’.  When editing or if a character starts to feel off character I can go back and look it over.  

The character traits help guide me to look at how they would make a choice or cause a wrinkle in the story.  Likes and dislikes are good for conversations and how they interact with other ppl.  The emotional arc of the character, so I don’t forget to give them growth throughout the story (I make them even for small bit players, just make the arc suitably small or petty).  This isn’t like...guided by any book or writing advice or anything smart like that.  

It’s just what I’ve found helps me.

Keeping it real today - frames for my ECCC art (the large Himouto! Umaru-chan, and the sweet mermaid boy from @kristinkemper ) and for the tiny original pieces from @topbanana-jam (the cute as all hell Derry Aeducan that I can't stop squeaking over) and @doomandnachos (Merida's glorious hair that she sent me years ago which I will forever love.) Also finally got to rock my geeky Yuri!!! On Ice keychain on my geek purse. (From ECCC as well. It's sparkly and @feoplepeel has a matching one and it is a delight. Look how miserable Yurio is. What a darling. =p)

So FOREVER AGO, I was tagged by (I think??  Forgive me if I’m wrong) @continuousspec to do OC wedding outfits, and I spent all afternoon finding pics for Derry (because I love Derry to distraction) and then...never actually posted them.  Ugh.  But I was going through my pics on my phone and realized “Hey.  I still have all these!” so here you go.  Wedding dresses, Aeducan style!

In all honesty, Derry would probably outwardly prefer gettin’ hitched in her good ole Warden armor.  Properly polished up of course.  But there’s a small part of her - the part that remembers being a princess - that doesn’t mind so TERRIBLY much when Alistair insists upon actual wedding attire (because he would.)  Considering the time period and setting, she’d most likely end up in something like this:

The color is SPOT ON.  The Wardens took her in when she was nothing, less than nothing, and she will bleed blue and silver.  Also, imagine this dress below in that same blue with a silver overdress instead of red (and less dripping with sleeves.  Derry is a dwarf, and those sleeves would end up being taller than she is) :

But I can’t help but think she’d still have some sort of armor component, even if it’s purely for show.  Depending on how grand the affair is, I can totally see this piece with that simple dark blue dress (see also: a wee little flower circlet for her glorious red hair):

HOWEVER, my ultimate Derry wedding dress?  Totally modern AU version, where she wears this lovely little thing (also Alistair in 2/3rds of a slivery grey suit three piece suit - the pants and the vest - with a lavender button down because I have always loved that combination and he would look SMASHING in it):

This is nothing about this dress I don’t like.  The blue velvet lacing, the antique creamy white, ugh.  This dress is everything.  Modern!Derry would re-wear this every. single. chance. she. got.

Elfroot for Derry :0)

Elfroot :: What is a small, mundane thing that brings your character great comfort?Derry learns all about simple pleasures once she's exiled to the surface world (not that she particularly bought into a lot of the excesses of her rank and station, but she was a princess - and a pretty favored and pampered one at that - so "simple" wasn't often something actually available to her.) And she learns that you can't waste it when some small good comes along. The feel of her mabari's soft little ears under her cold hand; Zevran's self-satisfied little smirk as he tells more and more outrageous tales around the fire; Alistair's huge hand holding hers so carefully, like it’s something precious; a hot meal and/or a bath after days, weeks of rain and damp travel; the taste of hot, sweet tea first thing in the morning; shamelessly using Alistair as a pillow at night on the road, especially on particularly rough terrain (sorry bro); getting to wear something pretty for the sheer sake of it. Her life out of necessity has to be extremely utilitarian, and her time is uncertain with a very finite end in the not too distance future. Simple pleasures mean a helluva lot.

Derry, Vandal Aria!

Vandal Aria :: How well can your character bounce back from personal tragedies?Derry has her traumas to overcome, and she has days where the darkness threatens to steal everything she's worked for but...in the end, she's dwarva: stubborn and selfish and steadfast, and a splash of her own brand of optimism that seems to shine through. It's rough going, and some wounds might not ever heal fully, but she's too stubborn to give up, for good or ill. (Friends help, even when she doesn't know how to ask for it.)

Deep Mushroom and Arbor Blessing for Derry? Thanks! :)

Deep Mushroom :: What act does your character consider morally foul but practically necessary? Does your character condone morally foul actions for practicality’s or necessity’s sake at allOh man, this is the subject of 100 fics I have heh. Helping Bhelen to keep the throne. She finds even the idea repugnant. Every sickly sweet word he says, every threat, every lie that fouls his mouth makes her want to vomit. (And finally commit the fratricide he framed her for that got her exiled in the first place.) But he is the one ruler who might make her homeland *work* again. Abolish the caste system, let the most marginalized of her people have a shot at a decent life. Harrowmont will rule the way the leaders of Orzammar have ruled for centuries, and it will fail. So no matter how much she hates herself - hates Bhelen - she will sacrifice her personal vendetta for the good of a place that she can never call home again. Arbor Blessing :: What is the happiest ending you can think of for your character?Haha - well, I’ve written about it just a little bit. But long story short, she and Alistair find a way to cure the Taint, run away together to someplace no one knows their faces, get busy having some little dwarf babbies (including one Emery Rose), and grow old together and be in love forever and ever and ever. That’s probably not where their future lies, but I’d like to think that Derry will find a cure and she and Alistair can be deeply, madly, wonderfully in love for however long they have (but I’d still like them to overcome magic and duties and biology to have their little red-headed daughter at least. Something from these two needs to live on, and I just love Emmy so much *weeps*)

Blood Lotus and Rashvine for Derry? :3

Blood Lotus :: Is your character a lightweight when it comes to intoxicating substances? How did they come across this fact?

Derry was raised to sip wine like a princess, and quaff ale like a warrior. She prefers to be clear-headed as a rule, but she’s definitely no lightweight (had to show those guys under her command in Orzammar she could handle her own.) She can still get drunk, it just takes a good reason and strong liquor to get the job done.

Rashvine :: Who/what is the one thing or person your character simply cannot stand?

*cough* her bastard of a backstabbing sorry excuse for a brother *cough* But um, as a less obvious choice, Derry isn’t exactly fond of Eamon and Isolde. Even if you take away the whole “you’re complete and utter asses to my boyfriend and threw him away as a child only to pay attention to him now that he *may* be ‘important’ ” thing, taking care of Isolde’s mess puts her and her companions - her family - at the mercies of insane cultists, dragons, and gods. She does it regardless, but it’s more for Alistair and Connor/the people of Redcliffe than for the arl and arlessa. Derry helps, it’s what she does, but she’s not entirely thrilled with those who manage to bring a horde of the undead into their own damn kingdom.
