Tell him I love him. Those were the last words his mother said as she held her crying child. Childbirth was always extraordinarily difficult for werewolf mothers, even dormant ones, and as the sheets became stained with blood and her vision became blurry she knew she was on borrowed time. Dagfinn was born in the middle of a blizzard in the extreme north of Norway in a small fishing town. Dagfinn became the son of a widowed father just six hours later.

His childhood was not anything out of the ordinary, he had a small group of friends and pack that helped look after him. His father was a dormant wolf, and in their small village the wolves took care of the people by going on the more dangerous fishing expeditions. They were stronger, they were hardier, it made sense and it made the deeply superstitious Norwegians trust the wolves more. It also meant that Dagfinn lost his father to the sea.

At ten, he was taken in by his alpha, who was only 18 and newly married. They raised him, and while it was more than fine, he yearned to leave. At sixteen, he did. Gifted with the ability to play piano, he spent four years traveling Europe and loving above bars while playing piano for a meager living. His name went from Dagfinn to Dags to Dax — a name he decided to keep. He explored and relished Europe, careful never to spend too much time in one place. The only issue was that Dax’s moon nightmares had always been more vivid than others. He’d wake up screaming, dripping with sweat, with the taste of blood in his mouth. His lineage remembered who he used to be.

Only the sea could remedy the nightmares. So home is where he returned, trying to get a grasp on what he was. Going back home was like returning to a place that was frozen in time. Now twenty, he was quick to help his community and not be a freeloader, suddenly grateful that he could sleep the night. A few years ticked by, he saved his money and bought his own boat, and the old friends of the past became new friends. Things moved in a happy routine -- until a new girl came to town. A tourist, apparently. Dax didn’t realize that he was falling for when he was, but suddenly it seemed obvious to him. It was also obvious that she was in love with his best friend.

The sea is dangerous. He said it all the time, a man filled with respect and love and fear for the waves that crashed on shores and lapped against his boat. Some years passed, he never stopped loving the girl or the sea. She, however, got her wish and Dax watched his best friend and the girl he was in love with start a romance that rivaled all others. He convinced himself he was content just being the best friend, after all it was better that than nothing. A week after she got engaged, she wanted to surprise her new fiance with the fact that she could sail too. An eye on the weather told Dax that it was a bad idea, but she persisted. She was going to sail with or without him, so Dax came along.

Tell him I love him. And those were the last words she said when her hand slipped from the railing of the boat. He dove in after her, abandoning the vessel. He was born on the sea, he was friends and enemies with the sea -- a sea who had claimed his father, and almost claimed his hand in a fishing accident on rough waters. That day proved that the sea was vengeful, and the waves swallowed her. That day proved that the sea never wanted him, and they vomited him onto the shore, with battered pieces of ship scattered around him. She was gone, and he was too. Rejected by what was supposed to be his, he threw himself into work and staying away from the town. People would never admit it, but he knew they blamed him for her death. He blamed himself.

When the weather reports came on the radio, it was too late to return to port. Alone, watching the storm approach, Dax tightened down the sails as the dark clouds engulfed him and blistering cold wind battered the boat. Waves crashed around him, and he went below deck, content to be lost with the sea. Everything went black, and when he awoke, it was clear that the storm was over. Climbing the deck, he stepped onto his boat that was wrecked, but floating just inside the harbor of New York City. There was no way, none at all, and he knew something was wrong the moment he stepped onto the docks.

The liminal space was something that his buddies used to tell campfire stories about, laugh about things like goblins and dwarves, and while he saw none of those -- he saw plenty of werewolves and vampires, even some witches. Dax tried to sail out of the space, but always seem to find himself back inside, and after numerous attempts, he knew there wasn’t an easy way out. He accepted his fate here, and quickly took a job in construction and carpentry. From there he skimped and saved until he could afford to build his own houseboat in the harbor. This feels like a fresh start, but he’s been tricked by that before.

Dax has a warm personality, he’s very kind and sweet for someone who is six foot six with full sleeve tattoos. There is an air of superstition that surrounds him, weird little quirks that shape the way he acts and walks. Fluent in Norwegian and English, he has a few other languages that he’s familiar with that give him an air of being somewhat educated but those who know him best know that he’s more down to earth and goofy than anything. Dax is someone who will whole heartedly pursue something that matters to him, recklessly throwing away everything. He bought his boat with just enough money in his pockets cover the costs and nothing else until payday.
