ahhh thank you! here's some syb after she surrenders to the cult! hope i managed to do your girl justice!

Sybille knew of Dove, but she never had the opportunity to properly meet her. At most she’s seen her in passing, during firefights, the top of her ombre hair ducking under cover while she provides covering fire for retreating Peggies. She’s brave, Sybille will give her that, and anyone who willingly puts up with John Seed must have the patience of a saint, but all interactions she’s had with her, brief as they were, have exclusively been from across the battlefield. 

Never on the same side. 

She supposes that’ll change considering they’re family now; now that she’s pledged herself to Jacob -- and, by extension, Joseph and the rest of the Project. 

Dove had been present at the ceremony where Joseph officially welcomed her into the cult. Sybille had hated being the center of so much attention, but every time her gaze met Dove’s, the woman was always quick to offer her a sympathetic and encouraging smile. 

The afterparty -- if you could really call it that -- is a family dinner hosted at John’s ranch. No other Project members. Just her, the Seeds, and Dove. 

Jacob pulls his truck behind all the other vehicles parked outside the ranch and she gives him a pleading look. “This really necessary?” she asks. “Can’t we just go home?”

“You don’t get to be part of the family and skip out on the actual family bullshit,” Jacob says, but his expression is soft. She’s had a damn long day, and he knows she’s getting tired. “We only have to stay through dinner, okay? Can you do that for me?” Sybille huffs a frustrated sigh and he clicks his tongue. “Come on, you’ve endured worse.”

“I’d rather the trials,” she grumbles, slumping in her seat and crossing her arms. 

Jacob shakes his head. He pulls his keys from the ignition and, draping his left arm over the wheel and angling his body towards her. “Sybille, look at me,” he says -- orders -- firmly. She knows she’s acting like a child, but fuck, she really doesn’t want to be here. Stubbornly, she keeps her eyes straight ahead, but Jacob reaches towards her, index finger curling under her chin to guide her look at him. “Just through dinner. Once that’s over we can leave. Okay?”

Sybille sighs. “Fine,” she says reluctantly.

“That’s my girl,” Jacob smiles, and he pulls her in to press his lips against hers before they’re both exiting the cab of the truck.

Dove is there opening the front door before they even reach the porch steps and she eagerly welcomes them inside. Joseph and Faith are already inside, and as she and Jacob enter, John pours them both glasses of bourbon. All the house staff had been sent home, leaving the entire ranch to just the six of them. 

It doesn’t take long for them to segregate based on gender. The brothers settle in the living room, talking by the fireplace while the ladies chat idly in the kitchen. Eventually, Faith is called over to join the Father and her fellow Heralds, leaving Sybille and Dove alone. She watches as Faith flounces over to her family, and she can’t help but smile at the sight of Jacob genuinely enjoying himself -- and she feels guilty for wanting to deprive him of this. He seems softer in the glow of the fire; he smiles easier, laughs quicker. The tension in his shoulders is almost entirely gone. He’s relaxed. At ease. 

“They don’t do this often, do they?” she asks. 

Dove hums and sips her cocktail. “They don’t,” she confirms.

“When was the last time they did?” 

Dove uses her straw to idly stir her drink. “When John brought me in. It wasn’t for very long -- not like tonight. The Reaping was still going on and everyone was busy trying…well…” The look she gives Sybille is adorably sheepish. 

She huffs a quiet laugh. “Tryin’ to catch me. Yeah, I know.”

“But it’s nice, isn’t it?” Dove continues. She peers through the doorway to where the Seeds are gathered in the living room. Laughter rings out, Jacob’s in particular booming out raucously from his chest like thunder. “It’s nice seeing them act like family.”

Sybille hums in agreement, and a pleasant warmth kindles in her chest -- a warmth she can’t attribute to the bourbon. “S’pose we’re family too, then,” she says. 

Dove blinks at her and smiles gently. “Guess we are. Gotta say, I am glad you’re on our side now.”

But before Sybille can continue the conversation, the oven beeps and Dove hops off her chair to check on the roast. Then, she looks at Sybille and nods towards the doorway. “Go tell everyone dinner’s ready!”

Sybille slides out of her chair and wanders into the living room to relay the news. 

Sybille never had a sister before. 

Something tells her that Dove is going to be a good one. 

At the very least, she’s sure she’ll help make this family dinner significantly more bearable. Hell, she might even enjoy herself.

When the Bones Sing review

5/5 stars Recommended if you like: ghosts, Southern Gothic, crime thrillers, the Ozarks

Big thanks to G.P. Putnam Son's Books, Netgalley, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

First off, can I say how gorgeous this cover is? Sain always gets the most interesting covers, and I particularly like the style of Dark and Shallow Lies and the Italian edition of Secrets So Deep (edizione italiana) , so I was excited to see this cover got that treatment.

Dovie can feel the bones of the dead sing to her, and the only way to get a body to stop singing is to dig up that body. You'd think this would be helpful to the local police department, and indeed it is, particularly since more and more hikers seem to be turning up dead.

Something I liked about this setup is that the sheriff and his deputy not only believe Dovie, but also that they willingly camp out and follow her into the Ozarks to find those bodies. The lot may not always get along, Dovie in particular doesn't take too kindly to them tossing her grandmother's sweet tea, but there's a sense of trust and a shared burden there, and I liked that they didn't butt heads just because Dovie's a teenager.

Part of the reason the sheriff so readily believes Dovie is 1) she dug up her first body when she was 4 years old, and 2) the 'power' is passed down through the women in her family, so both her grandmother and mother were able to hear the bones as well. This, naturally, leads the other inhabitants of Lucifer's Creek to look at the family askance, just about the way you'd expect in any small town. I thought it was really interesting to see the way the traditional practices and older magical beliefs of the Ozarks came into play in this book. I don't really know a lot about the region, so I don't know how much Sain is relying on real beliefs people had/have and how much is made up, but I definitely liked reading about the hill people and the little magicks and charms people sought in their everyday lives.

Speaking of magic, it's actually kind of hilarious how much Dovie doesn't believe in magic or spirits or ghosts. She can sense bones and her grandmother and best friend, both of whom she loves and adores, believe in and practice magic, but she simply will have nothing to do with it. Okay, that's a little disingenuous, she'll participate somewhat because she loves them, but Dovie will also straight up say magic isn't real. Like...girl, you can feel and locate dead bodies, what do you think that is? (her answer is: a talent, like learning languages, lol). I do feel kind of bad for Lo though and wonder how he doesn't lose it being friends with Dovie all while she insists he can't really see ghosts.

The murder of the hikers is what really takes the main stage in the book. 24 hikers in three years is a lot, but it isn't until Dovie and her best friend, Lo, start looking at things more closely do they realize just how unusual it is. Like with any good mystery, they have a few false starts and end up pursuing the wrong suspect more than once before finally figuring it out. I think Sain did a really good job making the different twists believable and each suspect really did feel like they could have done it. I feel like sometimes with mysteries like this it's easy to tell when someone is a red herring suspect, but it was really well done here. I enjoyed trying to figure out who did it alongside the characters, and even had some guesses of my own.

Something that did feel a little odd to me though was the scene at the end with Dovie and the townspeople. People, especially those who are becoming fanatic in some way, are not just going to change their mind and be like 'oh, sorry, I was wrong' just because they were...well, wrong. I expected more to go down between the inhabitants of Lucifer's Creek and the Wilder-Clover clans, and it didn't feel right for things between them to just kind of slide into lukewarm territory.

Overall I greatly enjoyed this! I suppose it's less of a horror book and more of a crime thriller, with some light magic and mysticism thrown in.

So this doesn’t exactly feel done, but I did my best!! I hope you enjoy it! Just two gals being pals :)

“Am I having a bad day? Yes,” said a very obviously half-asleep voice in the hallway. A long pause, then a deep, exhausted sigh. “Am I still on my quest to make pancakes? Also yes.”

Jey stirred, opening her eyes to see the red light of sunset sprawling into her apartment. She stayed back a few moments, adjusting to the new time, before reluctantly swinging her legs off of the couch. She padded across the room, still groggy enough to completely disregard the fact that she was still wearing her extra fluffy napping pants. Of course, given the seeming tiredness of the person in the hallway, that probably wouldn’t be a problem.

She swung open the door to see a single, beaten-down looking woman. Jey smiled. “You all right there, sweetie?”Dovie turned around. Dark circles spread out from under her eyes. “I’m okay.”Jey examined her up and down. Pallid skin, dark eyes, looked to be shivering a little bit- yep. She was sick. And it had to be at the same time that John was out of town on some trip, too.

She really didn’t like John Seed, but his choice of girlfriend was definitely something Jey approved of. Dove was an absolute angel of a girl- how the hell she put up with John was far beyond the realm of human understanding- and honestly, she was out of his league and then some.

“Come here, Dovie,” Jey coaxed. “You look pretty sick. How long’s this been going on?”

Dovie sleepily walked over, rubbing at her eyes. “Just since this morning. Oh, no- you don’t have to-” she quickly added, seeing the determination in Jey’s eyes.

Jey laughed and pulled her inside the apartment. “It’s no trouble, I promise. I’m calling Faith, okay?”

Dovie smiled obligingly, but shook her head. “I’m not that sick.”

Jey paused dialing the phone number, reached over, and felt the woman’s head. It burned like hell. “Yes, you are. I’m not leaving you to fend for yourself with a fever like that. Besides, Faith won’t mind, I’m sure.”

Dovie just let out a small mumble of protest before sitting down on the couch.

When the call reached Faith, Jey was greeted with a soft voice. “Hello?”“Hey, Faith. It’s me. Your brother’s girlfriend’s sick, can you come and get her?”“Dove? Oh, no,” Faith sighed. “I’ll be there in thirty minutes.” She promptly hung up. Probably had things to do, people to see; residential wasn’t being easy on her.

Meanwhile, Jey turned on the stove. “You said something about pancakes?”“Oh, really, it’s-” Dovie signed in defeat when Jey gave her a warm, but firm, look. “Yeah. Something about pancakes.” She yawned, looking so pitiful that Jey felt a little bit of her heart break. “Would it… be okay if I used your TV?”“Sure. Remote’s on the table.”

Dovie switched it on, scrolling through the channels until she finally settled on something to watch, with a lot more gunfire than Jey would have expected from the understated woman. Jey let muscle memory take over for the pancakes, and eventually, as the sun continued to dip below the world, Faith’s signature gentle two knocks called Jey to the door.

“Hey, Faith. Come on in, she’s…” Jey glanced over, only to see that Dove had fallen peacefully asleep to a mystery program. “Asleep, I guess. Good luck with that.”

“You’re not really going to-”

Jey laughed. “No, no. Come on, let’s get her to your car.”

JJ looks at her phone walking up to Rossi. “Let's get them.” 

Hotch walks in “Rossi, JJ, you go to the home of Randy. Find him and bring him in. Emily will take the deputy to pick up, Christopher and I'll take agent Right to go and see Tod.” They walk outside. 

JJ says to the others “Keep us up to date!” before getting in the car and driving to the home address of Randy Baumgarten.

“You seem stressed.” Rossi says without looking away from the road.

“Yes of course, Spenc is out there. With some sexaddicted maniac!” 

“JJ, you can't call Morgan that.” He smiles bright. 

“God Rossi, no I don't. Let's just say I am not only scared for the person keeping them. But also to the role they now play.” 

“How do you mean?“ 

“Well, everyone can see that Reid is like a girl with a crush around Morgan. And Morgan keeps on playing the 'I'm a bad boy' part. I'm scared he will hurt Spencers feelings by this.” 

“Ever thought about it that maybe Derek likes the kid the same way?’ 

“uhm well wait here it is!”

Rossi parks the car. Together they walk towards the door. 

“FBI. RANDY open up.” They hear some sounds. The door opens slowly. 

“How can I help?” 

“We would like to bring you in for some questions.” 

“Yeah sure.” they walk to the car. That's one.

GARCIA POV There must be something more about these people. Wait. What if i do the search different. Back to the beginning. Adding having a gay relationship.

“Hey everyone?” they all answer to make Garcia know that they hear her. “I did the search again, diffrent way. And I think I found our suspects.”

“What did you find?!” JJ asks

“I found, Bart and James. Both did time in the same prison. I called. They faced each other for 8 months. Then Bart came free. He was held for stalking and James for harassing a boy in a soccer lockerroom. They are now officially living together.” 

“Send us the addresses!” 

“Already on your phones!”

JJ POV “Rossi, what you said, about Morgan. Do you believe that?” 

“Well, I am only thinking out loud, but isn't he showing all the signs?” 

“I don't quite understand.” 

“He always makes sure Reid gets home safe. That he can sleep in the jet. That some news is brought in a different way. He taught him how to shoot. And helped him pass the physical tests.” 

“Now you say it. It sounds like they are all ready in a relationship. But they don't know that.” 

“But, it could be just a really good friendship. But it wouldn't surprise me if after this, they will be a couple.” 

“I do hope so, they both deserve someone like that in their lives.”

REID POV “Derek?”

“yes pretty boy?” 

“I'm hungry. But I don't dare to eat the food.” 

“hmm.. Let's see what he got us.” Rolling out off the bed and onto his feet morgan walks of. 

Damn he looks good. In only those boxers. Where did I leave mine? Oh here they are. 

Reid walks to the kitchen. Finding Morgan looking at the basket. 

“We can eat this. Or I can cook if you want. There is enough for a burrito by Derek” 

“I would like to see you cook.” Morgan looks up to see Reid smiling at him. And he immediately smiles back 

“You'll get it babe.” Pulling Reid in for a kiss, pushing him against the wall.

“Well hello. I see you enjoyed the time here. And now I have a request.”

“What do you want.” Reid's voice sounds defeated. Morgan grabs his hand holding it tightly “You can't break us.”

“I wasn't planning to.” You could hear the smirk through his voice. 

“Were we babe?” 

“No definitely not.” 

Wait fuck babe how is come we only hear him now where was he?!

“Derek, whatever happens happens okay? Let's just try to keep them pleased and each other alive.” Grabbing his hand even tighter Morgan nobs.

“First of all, eat those burritos and take the pill that is also in the basket. After that, make L O V E.”

Morgan and Reid do as told. After taking the pill. Morgan steps closer to Reid. “Alot of foreplay?” Reid kisses him to agree. Morgan pulls Reid on the counter spreading his legs and stepping between them. Moving his hands up and down his legs.

I'm getting hard already. Must be those pills, viagra of course.

“Look!” She points at some bloodstains dripping further into the room. Walking further they see the glass house.

“What the fuck is this?” 

“It looks like we are in the right place.”

“PRoCeed to the bedroom. Prepare the small on to be bottom!” 

“Hotch I see them. We got two clean shots here.” 

“We see them too. Keep those shots stand by we are going to try and capture them alive. If they run. Shoot. Aim for the legs”

Hmm, I think Dovie would enjoy both, but she would prefer dawn. She’s used to waking up early, so she might as well enjoy it. Haha. Besides, sunrises in Hope County are quite beautiful.

Rovanna is definitely a dusk kind of person. She often stays up late, listening in to the radio to see if Dove has any problems or needs any help. She loves to sit out on the deck of her home and gaze up at the sky just like she and her father used to do when she was little.

“I caught you, my Dear Wrath.”

John had Dove pinned to the ground on the side of the road. He sat on her hips and held her wrists to the ground. He looks down at her with a smile on his face until he hears rumbling come from behind them. His smile drops as he sees a white truck approaching.

Dovie looks passed him as well and sees the cult truck too. She begins squirming under John. He looks back down at her.

“Hold still.” John says, looking directly into Dove’s eyes.

Her eyes dart over at the approaching peggies and back at John. She nods slightly up at him and stays perfectly still. John gives her a quick smile before turning his head back at his followers who were getting out of their vehicle.

“I have her under control.” John calls to them.

“Are you sure, Sir? We can help you.”

“Yes, I will be fine.” John looks down at Dovie for a second, “She won’t dare hurt me. 

“We’re just having a little conversation. You may leave.” He adds.

The two cultists hesitate before finally nodding and turning back to their truck.

“Be careful, Sir.” They say before leaving.

John watches carefully as the truck pulls away. He moves his gaze back to Dove. He grins down at her.

“You don’t think I’ll hurt you?” Dovie says, smirking up at him.

John brings a hand to his chest and fakes a gasp. “I’m hurt that you would even joke about doing such a thing, my Dear Dovie.”

“Then why are you still holding me down?” She asks, raising her brows up at him.

John lets out a low chuckle, “So I can do this…”

He leans down and presses his lips to Dove’s mouth. He cups her face and holds her there. She lets out a hum and closes her eyes. John trails his hands to her neck and gently caresses her skin. 

He pulls away from her just a bit to look down at her perfectly healed WRATH across her collarbone. He leans down and presses his lips onto the soft skin. He cups her cheek and presses another kiss to her jaw and then to her earlobe.

Dove lets out a laugh, “My, my John. Aren’t you frisky today?”

“That is completely your fault.” He mutters into her skin.

“Always blaming me, huh, my bad little sinner?” She teases back.

“Do you wish to atone, my Dear?”

“Mmm, what do you think, Handsome?”

“Hmm, I think we’re both going to need atonement after this.”

John lays his weight down on top of Dovie and captures her mouth once again. A rumbling laugh comes from Dove.

“Now that is something I might just say Yes to.”

Introducing...Deputy Dovie Ash!

I’m finally posting some actual stuff about my OC. I decided to post after seeing @edensgay post some stuff about theirs. Ya’ll should go check out their OC too!

Now, without further ado, here is some stuff about my girl!

Here’s a picture of her.

Her name is Dove Marie Ash, but her nickname is Dovie.

She’s 5’ 8” in height.

She has medium beige skin because of her mixed ethnicity. She has Mexican heritage from her mom’s side.

She was born on September 13, 1991. 

Her zodiac sign is Virgo.

She was born in the Texas in a small town north of San Antonio.

Before transferring to Hope County, she worked for a sheriff’s department in TX.

After a couple of years there, she was yearning for something new, a change of scenery. Her family and friends had many different opinions about it, but ultimately she made the decision.

An uncle of hers told her about a friend who worked in Hope County, Montana. That friend was Earl Whitehorse. He told her about an opening for a Junior Deputy.

Dovie has an array of interests and hobbies. She likes sketching, drawing, and even some photography.

She also loves plants and animals and knows a lot about them. She can identify a number of them and can tell the difference between many toxic and nontoxic plants. She’s very outdoor savvy.

Believe it or not, she also has a deep down love for fashion. Despite growing up in a rural area and loving the outdoors, she also loves wearing high heels and dresses. But ever since she joined the departments, she hasn’t had much of a reason to dress up.

Dovie has a good relationship with her family. Her parents still live in Texas. She has an older brother, Matt. He is a few years older than her and works in Dallas as a judge. (He’s 35 yrs old)

She’s an independent lady. She’s only ever had one boyfriend. They were happy, but they later both agreed to end it after he had to move away to New York for a job. It was mutually agreed. Now, she mostly focuses on her own life and career.

But sometimes she wishes she could have someone to stand by her side and have someone to keep her company.

Once in the midst of the cult, she still keeps her independence. She mostly works with her animals friends. Especially Peaches.

She prefers stealth when possible, but sometimes she accidentally triggers alarms and guards without meaning to...

Even though her name is Dove, she is a terrible airplane pilot. She can work with helicopters, but planes? She’s terrible at it.

She loves to laugh. And to pull pranks. (She especially loves making John angry)

Also, she has an immense fear of wasps, hornets, and their other relatives. (Honeybees are cool in her book though. Haha) She will literally take the time to go compeletely around an area even if there’s just a tiny wasp nest.

For the fact swap! My Deputy, Dovie, loves to star gaze and cloud watch. She can lay out in the grass for hours simply enjoying the peace and watching the sky. :)
