do you think kanan ever thought about the clone who tried to convince him he was trying to help?
DO YOU THINK KANAN EVER ASKED REX ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT HE KNEW CLONE FORCE 99? DO YOU THINK HE ASKED REX IF HE KNEW GREY?????
.... DO YOU THINK. THAT BEFORE HE EVER EVEN MET REX, GREGOR, AND WOLFFE, HE THOUGHT ABOUT ALL THOSE SOLDIERS WHO CALLED HIM LITTLE COMMANDER AND CARRIED HIM ON THEIR SHOULDERS??? AND HOW THEY KILLED DEPA WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT?
and then rex explains to him what happened. order 66, the chips. everything. DO YOU THINK HE REGRETS ALL THE SHIT HE SAID ABT THE CLONES BECAUSE THE CLONES WERE HIS FRIENDS AND THEN HE FINDS OUT THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING TO STOP IT?

I like the idea of Kanan at some point opening up to Rex about the clones he'd known in Depa's battalion. He's mourned Depa and the Jedi, he's learned the truth about the chips, he's started to build a better relationship with Rex, but he's never truly allowed himself to mourn the men he'd considered friends and lost during Order 66.
Rex didn't know them, of course, the clones wouldn't all have known each other or anything, but it doesn't really matter. He listens as Kanan talks about Grey, the commander who took him under his wing, or Styles, the captain who liked to tease him. Kanan talks about how different the four survivors of Depa's original battalion had been from the rest of the men, the way that history with each other had defined a part of their relationship to each other that just wasn't there with the rest of the battalion, but how protective they were of the men who'd joined afterwards (including Kanan himself).
Kanan expresses his regret that he never realized the truth or went back to try to find any of the men, and Rex assures him that this would have been a death sentence and not a single one of those men would've wanted him to make that sacrifice for them any more than Depa would've. His men couldn't tell him to run the way Depa did, but if they could've spoken to him, that's what they'd have told him, to run and not look back. Rex says that while he hadn't known Kanan's battalion, he had met other clones who'd ended up with younger padawan commanders and the one thing all of them (including Rex) were able to agree on was how proud they'd been of the padawans and how lucky they all felt to be able to serve alongside them. So he KNOWS Kanan's men loved him and would've wanted him to be safe, even if it meant leaving them behind.
And Kanan finally allows himself to shed tears for his men, for the loss of the friends he'd only just started to get to know. Rex holds him and stays until Kanan cries himself to sleep on Rex's shoulder and that's how Hera finds them hours later.

Anyone who has read the Kanan comic books knows Depa Billaba is almost a mother figure to her padawan Caleb Dume in those books. So I thought this commission of Depa & Captain Grey kissing and Caleb peeking in and calling her Mom would be funny.

Okay but-
am I the only one who thinks that a young Caleb/Kanan looks like Grey and Depa's secret love child ?
This is young Caleb/ Kanan :
Tumblr media
And these are Grey and Depa :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here they are all next to eachother :
Tumblr media
Caleb's got Depa's eye shape and Grey's skintone. He also has matching black hair to the two adults and a similar (if not the same) hair texture as Grey. EVEN HIS NOSE LOOKS LIKE A SMALLER VERSION OF GREY'S !!!! The only thing tha's rly diffrent between the three is that Caleb has blue eyes. But I'm like- 50% sure that Jango Fett had a sister in some comic with blue eyes/a lighter eyecolour. (Let's all be glad that Grey and Depa can't be Caleb's bio parents due to general timeline reasons, otherwise the GAR might have had an actual scandal on their hands)

The rare Depa and Grey post. A little interlude before the cannon events of Haruun Kal
“I have an old friend who was born here.” His general says, sudden in the silence of the lander but conversational. “In my heart, part of the reason I took this mission was to protect the planet that made him who he is.”
Grey isn't sure what to say to that. It somehow feels too personal, even after all they have been through. His general speaks about her life before the war and outside of the war often, but never of sentiment.
“If you think he still lives down there and can give me a name or some characteristics, I can have the boys keep an eye out.” He offers. “Off record, just to give you a shout if they see him.”
She looks at him with warmth. “No need, he's a Jedi and far from here. My words are just the musings of an old woman.”
She's been on an “old woman” kick lately. Grey hasn't understood any of these jokes that she does, though some of the men find them hilarious. So does she, apparently. Stars know why. But this time she says it with an air about her that seems almost sad, and he finds himself with the urge to participate, just this once.
“Not too old to slash some clankers, I hope.”
He cringes under his helmet as the words leave his mouth, but they have the desired effect. His general brightens, her lips quirking upwards around the edges.
“Not quite. If Master Yoda can do it, I suppose I have a few centuries left in me.”
“Centuries, sir?” Grey knows what her exaggerating tone sounds like, and that was all serious.
“Oh, yes. He's coming up on nine, if the force wills.”
“Doesn't sound like he could die, even if the force willed.” Grey mutters in astonishment. Depa chuckles, but the air of heaviness is back upon her, either from his comment or the shuddering of the lander as they pull up for touchdown.
“We all die, Grey.”
Call him paranoid, but he does not like to hear a phrase like that from his general just before they begin a ground assault. “Sir?” He inquires, a bit forcefully.
“My apologies, I didn't mean to alarm you.” She cuts herself off, but Grey somehow hears the “Just the ramblings of an old woman” anyway.
“Alright.” He'll ignore it then. He pushes the bad feeling welling in the pit of his stomach to the side as the lander doors open and he can feel the blast of jungle humidity even through his helmet. “Let's get to work.”

Captain Styles, Caleb Dume, Depa Billaba, and Commander Grey
Grey and Styles aren't perfect, but I tried my best to get close to their appearance in the Kanan comics as I could

Unresponsive
[read on ao3][masterlist]Febuwhump prompt: unresponsive
There's a tight stitch in Depa's chest. She feels a profound emptiness, a hole in her heart that feels almost physical. She cannot feel Caleb's happy warmth where she felt it only seconds previous, only a pulsing umbilicus of a Force bond clenched in agony. She cannot feel Caleb. She cannot feel Caleb.
Tumblr media
Characters: Depa Billaba, Commander Grey Wordcount: 510 Warning: Major Character Death
Tumblr media
SIGNAL LOST. SIGNAL LOST. SIGNAL LOST.
Depa cannot tear her eyes away from her commlink, nor can she feel her heart beating. The sensations of her world have been replaced by an overall tingling numbness, as if she had meditated for a full night and day and returned to the physical plane in the same position she'd started in. Static on her skin, and bright red letters blinking SIGNAL LOST where the tracking beacon for Caleb's crashed ship had been only moments ago.
"Sir, are you alright?" Commander Grey shouts, crawling on his elbows towards her. There's a massive stripe of of jungle mud smeared all the way down his front, covering everything from his visor to his shinplates. "We've got to get under cover before they launch another mortar! Sir, can you hear me?"
Depa ping's Caleb's commlink to get his location. The channel is unavailable.
"Sir please, we've got to move!"
She tries it again. And again. Even if the beacon is down, they were close enough before the strike to ping Caleb's location off his commlink to find him. The Felucian jungle is infested with battledroids. They must find him and evacuate before another mortar strike hits.
"Damn it, General… Bosun, this is Commander Grey, do you copy? Bosun, did you make it?"
Depa pages back over to the tracking beacon and restarts the signal connection. She doesn't have time to waste on technological problems! She blinks rapidly and wipes away something dark leaking into her eyes from her stinging brow.
"I'm here, Commander! I'm here!"
"General Billaba is in shock. I think… I think that mortar hit Commander Dume's ship."
"Oh, no, no, stars and tides say you're joking—"
There's a tight stitch in Depa's chest. She feels a profound emptiness, a hole in her heart that feels almost physical. She cannot feel Caleb's happy warmth where she felt it only seconds previous, only a pulsing umbilicus of a Force bond clenched in agony. She cannot feel Caleb. She cannot feel Caleb.
"She's unresponsive to any stimulus. I'll give her a jab and we'll drag her off. Last thing we need is for her to come to in a panic while we've got hands on her."
"You're the medic."
She feels the questing probe of Mace, alarmed at whatever he must sense on his end of their bond even from light years away. She doesn't remember how to touch back, and instead she slips away like a silk scarf from his metaphysical touch. She feels a fear that is foreign, sharp and hot and very much not hers. She doesn't remember ever sensing her Master's fear before.
"Easy, General. This'll just be a little pinch. There you go, lay back. I've got you."
"You carry the General, I'll shoot. Got it, Sergeant?"
"Yessir!"
Depa floats into the air, secure in a pair of plastoid arms. She cannot feel her body. She cannot feel Caleb. She cannot feel much of anything, anymore, but she does hear the whistle of another mortar right as the darkness overtakes her.

Today, Someday — Grey/Depa/Styles
Modern au. First/surprise date, requited love, married Depa/Grey, valentines fic (don’t @ me I know it’s summer).
Read on ao3
Summary:
Some years ago, not long after Depa’s sister died, Caleb had pronounced him the Best Uncle Ever.
“Really?” Styles had asked. “What about Grey, hm? Surely he’s really the best.”
“Grey makes me go to bed at seven o’clock,” Caleb pouts, nose wrinkling very sweetly. “And he doesn’t let me have any biscuits before dinner.”
“That’s because he wants you to eat your dinner. His cooking is very good, it would be a shame to waste any.” Caleb had sat up and flopped back onto the sofa with a huff that made Styles laugh. “And anyway, I’m not a very good cook and I’m not feeding you every day. I’m allowed to give you treats and let you stay up late, yeah? Our secret.”
Caleb seemed to accept this answer, but he’d been insistent. “Youre still the coolest uncle. You love auntie and Grey very much, don’t you?”
“Of course I do,” Styles had assured him despite the knot in his throat. “I love them even more than you do.”
“Not true!” Caleb had protested vehemently. Styles smiled and let him win that argument.
