He’d been inside when the rain had begun. Of course, he hadn’t minded at all. There was an umbrella in his bag for situations exactly like this, and he was perfectly fine inside with his coffee and newspaper. Yet his eyes had been drawn to the window at precisely the right moment to see the Italian find shelter outside. With a sigh, Ludwig lingered on the article he’d been reading for a moment longer before his conscience won the better of him. Frustrated with his own heart he aggressively folded the newspaper and returned it to the table he’d taken it from, put a lid on his coffee, and yanked the umbrella out of his bag.

After getting outside and opening up the umbrella and offering it to Romano he wasn’t about to let his kindness be ignored. “I’m headed out anyway. This umbrella is big enough for both of us.”

Romano gave the other a puzzled look, of all the peoplepassing he hadn’t expected them to be the one to offer him shelter from therain. He had spent a good ten minutes watching the rain from the awning of thebuilding with other people barely giving him a second glance as they dashedinto the rain with their own umbrellas. So why had Ludwig, of all people,stopped and offered him a spot under his?

“Erm, grazie,”He muttered, “But, I think I’ll just wait for it to stop.” Turning back to lookat the rain, he almost instantly regretted his statement. It was pouring itdown and showed no signs of stopping any time soon. He would probably have torun for it after the other had left.
