TW: alcohol usage

Vincent leans back his chair and holds the small glass of something sweet and alcoholic. His fingers tap against the glass mindlessly as he loses himself in the nightclub’s music. The familiar buzz that comes with alcohol drapes across his senses. Dmitri gently holds Vincent’s other hand. He feels Dmitri’s thumb rub circles into the top of Vincent’s hand. Like a boat floating out in a harbor while still tied to the dock, the feeling is strangely grounding.

Vincent shifts his weight around and sits forward. The hood of one of Dmitri’s hoodies slips off Vincent’s head.

“You look so small in that,” Dmitri chuckles, sipping on some rum & coke, “You get swallowed in it.”

Vincent rolls his eyes and pulls the hood back over his head, “It’s because you’re a giant, Dmitri. What are you even doing?”

“People watching,” Dmitri says as he tilts his head in Vincent’s direction, “There was a pride event in town today and now there’s a bunch of new people.”

Dmitri brings the glass back up to his lips, it was his only one so far. Vincent had already had five. There is a tiny bit of guilt swirling in the mess of Vincent’s mind over it. Dmitri was paying for all of their drinks tonight and Vincent is already walking the tightrope between tipsy and drunk.

“Why don’t you ever drink much?” Vincent asks as he presses into Dmitri’s shoulder. The colors of the nightclub are slowly beginning to dance around Vincent’s vision, drifting in places they shouldn’t.

Dmitri shrugs and exhales, “I just don’t partially like being drunk. I’ve woken up in jail after nights drinking too many times for me to count. I get stupid whne drunk.”

“And you get honest,” Vincent chuckles and he reaches forward and takes some of Dmitri’s food that materialized between now and when they sat down. It’s french fries. “The one time you got drunk around me you told me a lot of personal details that you would have avoided when you’re sober.”

Dmitri shakes his head and snakes his arm around Vincent’s waist, holding him gently. Vincent rests his head on the tall man’s shoulder. The hood falls past his face and he is clouded in darkness. Parts of his head stop spinning as the lights stop reaching his eyes.

Just Dmitri and his smell.

Then, words left Vincent’s mouth that surprised even him, “I shouldn’t have drunk that much.”

Dmitri chuckles and Vincent basks in the rumbling of his chest. He feels Dmitri lean over and kiss him on the head.

“Yeah, you’ve probably drank enough to kill a horse so I’d stop.”

“No,” Vincent mutters as he pulls himself upright. He takes another sip of his drink, the sugary liquor burning through his esophagus. He licks his lips and the sugary residue washes over them. “It’s not that easy.”

Dmitri reaches into the bowl and hands Vincent a couple of french fries, “I get it, you want me to get you mocktails? Cassie makes them so well they taste alcoholic.”

Vincent takes the fries and nearly swallows them whole. Leaning forward, his eyes scan the crowd of people. Many dance close with partners. They embrace under the changing lights of the nightclub. Music fills the spaces between. All have wide smiles from either carefree joy or drunken bliss.

An envy blooms in Vincent’s chest.

“Vee?”

Dmitri looks down at Vincent with a warm smile, “If you want I can order you mocktails?”

“Yeah,” Vincent replies quickly, “We can do that.”

Dmitri’s smile deepens and it bleeds over to Vincent.

“You’re contagious,” Vincent pokes as he drags Dmitri’s fries in front of him, “And these are mine now.”

“Really?” Dmitri says leaning down.

Vincent laughs and presses his nose against his, “Yes, yes they are.”

A smile widens across both Vincent and Dmitri’s face. They share breath.

I wanna kiss you.

“Dmitri!” Kauri, someone he shouldn’t be surprised to see here, surprises him and he drags a chair up to their table, “You haven't been here in awhile.”

Dmitri leans back and shrugs, “Could say the same for you. You used to practically live here before.”

Kauri laughs and Vincent can’t tell if it’s genuine or whether it's an act. If it’s that latter, it's a damn good one. “Who’s this?”

Vincent rips himself away from Dmitri and hides back inside the hoodie. Pulling on the strings, he tries to hide away from the pair of prying eyes that know too much.

He watches, for a moment, Kauri’s expression shift. The blind curiosity vanishes and a deeper, more knowing desire strides in its stead. Vincent feels his stomach drop and masks the anxious anticipation that threatens to spill across his face.

Please Kauri, don’t say anything.

“Is he someone new?” Kauri asks with his typical playful mischief.

Dmitri shakes his head. A flash of pride flickers in his eyes as he responds, “Nope, been on his arm for awhile. Where’s yours? What’s blondie’s name?”

Kauri laughs as he turns around in the chair and clicks his tongue, “Jake’s somewhere. Don’t worry about him, he’s better at taking care of himself than anyone else I know.”

Dmitri chuckles and takes another sip of his liquor, “You two out enjoying the festivities?”

Vincent wiggles a finger into Dmitri’s hand. Dmitri takes his hand gently and gives it a firm squeeze. He lets himself fade into the music, buzz, and salt, trying to avoid eye contact with the man sitting across from him.

“Just the night, out enjoying the eye candy,” Kauri coos, eyes flicking across Dmitri in less than a blink. Kauri, the master of eye flicks, keeps glancing back down at Vincent.

Vincent stays quiet.

Dmitri rolls his eyes and rubs Vincent’s knuckles again. He gives Kauri a look akin to a slightly annoyed father, “I have my own eye candy, so don’t worry about me.”

Vincent rests his head on Dmitri’s shoulder and pulls more on the strings. He wants to just vanish into the music or into Dmitri. Either works for him.

Kauri glances over his shoulder at Jake, who is emerging from the crowd of people, “Speaking of, my eye candy’s here.” Kauri snatches Vincent’s glass of sweet liquor and shoots the rest of the glass down in a gulp before setting it down and spinning it on the table toward Vincent, “Kiss him goodnight for me will you.”

The singing of the glass against the metal table makes Vincent’s dental implants vibrate in his skull. He winces and stops the glass with his free hand.

Vincent watches Kauri trot up to Jake and take his hand, pull him close, and whisper something in his ear. Jake rolls his eyes and Kauri just smiles. It was probably about him.

“You look tired,” Dmitri says, wrapping one of his legs around Vincent’s, “Wanna head out soon.”

Vincent nods silently. It is the truth, he is tired, but he just feels worn.

Looking up at Kauri and Jake or any of the happy, young couples around, the one thing Vincent could think of is, That could’ve been me in a different life.

Dmitri places a kiss on Vincent’s head and hands him some more fries.

Vincent just lets himself be lost in the smell of Dmitri and the sounds of life around him.

Kauri and Jake sit snuggled up together on the couch listening to the TV and Antoni cooking breakfast in the kitchen. The sounds of life slowly begin to emerge around them.

Nat holds up her phone and looks at Kauri, “Kauri… why did Vince text me this morning to ask you ‘Why.’ What did you do?”

Kauri looks up from Jake’s shoulder and says contently, “I got within three feet of Vincent fucking Shield, are you proud of me Nat?”

“What did you do?”

“The answer to his question is, why not.”
