The reason why Cellor-sun was so adamant about saving her friends despite risking her life to do so was because if she didn't she risked the Natchlor absorbing her powers and in turn causing the destruction of the whole vessel. Yes she loves her friends but she needed to take the risk, it was a big part of the plot, how do people not see that the first time they watched??
Also I hate how they forcefully gave Cellor-sun a love interest. Soma was an interesting character as Cellor-sun's new companion but they didn't have to force the love interest trope on him. I feel like the trope was so one dimensional, like two different people wrote him. The Cellor-sun I know would never instantly fall in love with someone like that! Their arc was literally 20 minutes long!!! She has high standards and yet just happened to meet someone who has all those exact standards??? Where do you find a cell that happens to be into all your interests, mesh well with your friends, and don't mind that you are a magical girl constantly risking your life for the sake of the vessel?? Soma would've been fine if he was just a friend of Cellor, he could've been her love interest, just stretch it out realistically. He has interesting powers that interact well with the rest of the cast, I really just wish his arc with Cellor would've been written better. Whoever wrote that needs to post a public apology right now.
#cellor-sun against the univessel #cellor-sun #soma-san catu #i could've written it better for real #catu

How (I imagine) Red Blood Cell and Band Cell find out U1146 likes to sing:
Band cell was assigned to patrol near the dendrite (dendritic cell's post). On his way there, he suddenly he sees a familiar figure passing by
Band Cell: Oh! Hey Miss RBC!
RBC looks around, finding the source of the voice and sees Band Cell
RBC: Oh hey there Band Cell!
Band Cell: It's nice to see you again! I'm sorry, am I keeping you from making your deliveries?
RBC: No, not at all! I just finished my deliveries a minute ago. I'm on my way to the cafeteria to buy some food.
Band Cell: Oh I see, by any chance are you going to be passing by the dendrite?
RBC: Yeah, I am! Why do you ask?
Band Cell: I'm headed that way too! Do you mind if I tag along with you?
RBC: Sure! I could use the company!
They chatted about everything they could think of as they made their way to the dendrite. Dendritic Cells spots them as they were walking towards his post.
Dendritic Cell: Hey there you two, care to join me for some tea, sandwiches and cookies?
RBC: I would love to
Band Cell: I guess I could join in as well
As Dendritic Cell prepares their food, RBC spots a book on the table. She picks it up and realizes it was a photo album of the WBCs. She then opens the album and flips through the pages
RBC: You sure do like keeping pictures of other cells, don't you, Dendritic Cell?
Dendritic Cell: I do. I like to hold on to the memories. Plus, they serve as inspiration for young cells like Band Cell and motivation for mature cells like his senpais
He places the food on the table, sits down and fills their cups with tea as he asks
Dendritic Cell: By the way, I haven't seen U1146 around. Is he okay?
RBC: Now that you mention it, I haven't seen him in a while
Both RBC and Dendritic Cell turn to Band Cell
Band Cell: He's fine. He's just working hard this past couple of days. I have to admit though, he needs to take a break once in a while
RBC: *chuckles lightly* That sounds very much like him. Though i wish there was some way we could make him take a break and just have fun
RBC and Band Cell sigh. Dendritic cell finishes drinking his tea and responds
Dendritic Cell: I have an idea! Why don't you take him and his friends out for some karaoke? I think he'll enjoy that
RBC: I didn't know he liked to sing!
Band Cell: Yeah, he doesn't look like the type of person who enjoys singing. Are you sure taking him out for karaoke is a good idea?
Dendritic Cell smiles and motions for RBC to give him the album. He flips through the pages then finally finds what he is looking for and shows them a picture of U1146 singing (if you've read the manga, you'll know what this picture looks like...but i'll put it here just in case )
Tumblr media
Dendritic Cell: I'm sure *smiles*
Meanwhile, somewhere in the body, U1146's receptor suddenly pings
U4989: There's no bacteria here, is your receptor broken?
U1146: I don't think so...
Suddenly a shiver makes it's way through his body. He drops to the floor, shivering, with legs to his chest, arms around his knees and his eyes wide open
U4989: What the heck is wrong with you?!?
U1146: I got the chills, I feel like someone is trying to see the embarassing stuff I've done in the past!

Aw those hcs are adorable!Ā
I like that green tea is such a staple for 1146 even cells who know him treat getting accepted by him like a pet owner does when their cat bring them a dead animal offering. At least he brings them tea instead of a dead germ. XD
Iā€™m now being reminded of the S1 ending where Platelet sits on top of 3803ā€™s cart. Only replace it with NC now. I can imagine all the weird looks they get when sheā€™s carting around adult Normal Cell like heā€™s a child. Neither of them care. NC probably just gives off a smug ā€˜you wish a strong pretty girl would give you a ride on her cart all over the bodyā€™ (and heā€™s right. Some are jealous). But I also see Leader Platelet come running after them because sheā€™s used to 3803 doing that for her too. Instead of making NC leave, Leader Chan plops gerself in his lap all three go on a adventure together (3803 is a disaster and curiosity magnet so eventually things could always get wild).Ā
Itā€™s funny to think NC is in fact very protective of her. But because heā€™s a Normal Cell now heā€™s much weaker then her. She ends up acting more protective over him and carrying him around when he canā€™t walk. That or she gives him piggy back rides.Ā  It probably takes him awhile to get used to this new reversal. But then heā€™s like 'eh sheā€™s caring about me and thatā€™s all that mattersā€™. He definitely still acts very protective but heā€™s more of the nagging type like 5100. But he does it more grumpily. Heā€™s actually bonded with 5100 when it comes to worrying about 3803 (which is pretty ironic). The only difference is he focuses more on how tough she is too and likes it when 3803 goes off the beaten path and does things a RBC isnā€™t known to do. Since 5100 thinks so little outside the box, NC also sasses her but she sasses right back and then they can squabble (in a non hostile way that never goes to the levels he and 1146 squabbles can) about how she thinks 3803 should just do as expected of her. While NC praises 3803 for doing more then whatā€™s expected of her and even uses the time she called the Calvary on Cancer as an example (which is also ironic).Ā
Lol, 1146 takes awhile to figure out heā€™s not over senstive about NC acting affectionate with 3803 because of the past (at least post finally accepting NC in their lives by giving him tea). Heā€™s just straight up jealous and territorial. Heā€™d hate any guy kissing her on the cheek. 3803 doesnā€™t mind because she actually gets that NC is not doing this out of romance (heā€™s just as dumb if not dumber then 1146 when it comes to that). Granted she knows he has a crush. But heā€™s also still very affection starved and not very good at getting social norms. Heā€™s trying his best though and these days wouldnā€™t dare do anything to upset her. After awhile she notices 1146ā€™s sheer grumpiness and NC tells her heā€™s upset heā€™s too shy to kiss her cheeks too. 3803 being 3803 quickly tells 1146 what NC told her and she informs him 'of courseĀ  he can kiss her cheek tooā€™. She waits for him to kiss her cheek but he just stands there frozen like all the life got sucked out of him. NC is trying not to laugh out loud. 3803 gets tired of waiting so - thinking it might help - she gives a quick kiss on the cheek to 1146. Then his clothes explodes off him as his face turns more red then her hair. Normally NC would get a little jealous but even heā€™s in a little awe by the reaction. 0_0
Normal Cell would cry tears of joy that NC managed to find two friends. Thatā€™s a lot more then he expected. Heā€™d be such a busybody like that overly enthusiastic momma bear whoā€™s so proud and invested in her child. NC would stop him from getting too excited over 3803 being his girlfriend because sheā€™s not. Normal Cell also shows 1146 all of NCā€™s most embarrassing photos because he sees 1146 as a nice upstanding guy who is like NCā€™s best friend. 1146 is polite enough to leave before laughing his head off and subtly making fun of NC about it later. Thatā€™s the quickest way to get NC to behave once he realizes all the blackmail ammo 1146 has on him.
Ā Aw, I bet 1146 gives the best hugs to 3803. He just envelopes her into his big arms and she feels so safe and warm in them. Sometimes when heā€™s particularly happy or sentimental, he sweeps her off her feet for a tight hug while she laughs.Ā
I can imagine 1146 just has his iconic dour face when heā€™s carrying them and thinking heā€™s the only adult in this trio.
NC would make fun of 1146 for liking boring vanilla best. 1146 would defend his choice saying itā€™s vanilla Bean! Very different from ordinary vanilla. Then heā€™d point out lemon suits NC just fine because theyā€™re both so sour to deal with.Ā
Aw NC trying his best to find a good dynamic with 1146 and 1146 leaving to cool off instead of exploding at him. Theyā€™d definitely have a ways to go and NC would be grateful deep down how patient and kind 1146 really is with him. The sass will always remain but NC is definitely forcing himself to learn how to not hurt others when previously thatā€™s what his entire existence was about. NC probably cried once when he accidently made 1146 REALLY upset. Then 1146 ended up getting flustered and giving NC way more treats then he could consume in one sitting because those tears would stop coming. Thatā€™s their weird dynamic.Ā
NC will never stop treating 3803 like a queen. Making her happy is the one thing that eases his guilt a little. She definitely sees herself acting like a big sister for him and always accepting his gifts. Sheā€™ll pat him on the head and hope someday heā€™ll hate himself a little less for a life he hadnā€™t picked. Her forgiveness is the one thing that helps him sleep at night.Ā
As much as NC would never admit it, he doesnā€™t want to ever move out of Normal Cellā€™s apartment. He knows heā€™ll get lonely without his creator and sees him as a security blanket despite all his visible annoyances over said mentorā€™s clingy ways. Heā€™ll probably treat Normal Cellā€™s next clone like that annoying younger sibling he never asked for and is his mortal enemy by birth (you know in a normal sibling way).Ā
~~~
Hiya! Are you new? Your email is unfamiliar to me....
Hahaha, now Iā€™m getting images of 1146 covered head to toe in blood while dragging around the mutilated remains of a bacterium for his friends. Itā€™s somewhat adorable but also terrifying.Ā
Thatā€™s a great callback! I actually wanted to reference that time in 3803/NCā€™s relationship back in RBA (basically one of the first times they meet and 3803 saves Cancer by running for her life with Cancer hanging on for dear life in her cart). But the reference to the season one ending is also a great detail! And yes, Leader Platelet (and a few of the other platelets), also like to ride on 3803ā€²s cart.Ā
(Sometimes, other RBCs will get their own platelets and theyā€™ll go have races around the body).Ā
I am living for the friendship with NC and 5100. Although Iā€™m pretty sure 5100 will never know the true story behind the kidnapping and NCā€™s true origins, they will surely bond over 3803. (But letā€™s face it, NC gets 3803 roped up in his shenanigans and itā€™s up to 5100, 4201, or 1146 to bail them out. And no. NC regrets nothing).Ā
Protective NC is best NC, even when heā€™s being a sassy little child when doing so.
1146ā€²s CLOTHES EXPLODE??? HEHAHAHAHAH! 3803 is left mystified while Dendritic Cell swoops in for a few photos.Ā
(NC pays Dendritic Cell with a few humorous stories of 1146 in exchange for a few photos... to which Normal Cell promptly sticks into his budding scrapbook for NC).
1146 gives the best hugs. Sometimes, when he swoops 3803 in his arms, he sees NC looking off to the side, an angry blush on his cheeks. 1146 isnā€™t one to gloat, but thatā€™s probably what heā€™s doing when he sees the look on NCā€™s face.Ā
(Donā€™t worry... some day down the line, 1146 hugs him... but they will never admit it).Ā
If thereā€™s anyone interested in the Abnormalities verse and also happens to be an artist or likes to doodle... please draw grumpy 1146 holding his two friends like theyā€™re a sack of grapes? Please? It would make my day, haha.Ā
Hehehe, I gave NC lemon flavor because of hisĀ ā€œlime green eyesā€. But he is definitely pretty sour to begin with.
Aw NC trying his best to find a good dynamic with 1146 and 1146 leaving to cool off instead of exploding at him. Theyā€™d definitely have a ways to go and NC would be grateful deep down how patient and kind 1146 really is with him. The sass will always remain but NC is definitely forcing himself to learn how to not hurt others when previously thatā€™s what his entire existence was about. NC probably cried once when he accidently made 1146 REALLY upset. Then 1146 ended up getting flustered and giving NC way more treats then he could consume in one sitting because those tears would stop coming. Thatā€™s their weird dynamic.
^^^ I wonā€™t expand on it, because you worded it better than I ever could. You broke their relationship into their barest essentials.Ā
Oooohhhh, I love the image of 3803 patting him on the head. While NC isnā€™t that much taller than 3803, the height difference is still apparent. I can just imagine that whenever NC gets really down or especially guilty, he hunches over himself, becomes smaller, and bows his head (reminiscent of his first reincarnation as a child trying to hide from the big, bad immune cells). When 3803 sees this, she immediately goes into mother/big sister mode and starts patting his head and smoothing his locks. Maybe she even kisses him on the forehead/cheek (depending on how sheā€™s still dealing with the trauma).Ā
After that, NC beams at her, but doesnā€™t sass or say anything.Ā
Heā€™s content with what she has given him.
Hehehe, I bet Normal Cell has to explain that there are rules and regulations to this sort of thing. So, they compromise. NC and Normal Cell will live on the same floor of their apartment complex and NC gets to visit whenever he wants.Ā
(He totally comes over every day just to annoy his younger sibling).Ā
Thanks for the lovely add ons! They were really cute and adorable! :D
ā€œOh, good. I really donā€™t know if I could have taken another bickering moment between those two.ā€- Elena now sipped a bit of the blood-wine, and then grabbed a cherry-chocolate muffin from the table, taking a big bite.
ā€œI know exactly what you mean. I really wish they get it together, because now it is beyond tedious. Hereā€- Elijah now saw a bit of butter cream left on the side of her lips, removing it with his thumb, drawing down her lips, giving her a sultry look. He then licked the thumb off, his eyes smirking delectably at the doppelganger.Ā
ā€œSweet, right?ā€- Elena said.
Elijah gulped a little nodding.Ā
ā€œVeryā€- he then said suggestively.
Elena now put the muffin aside and smiling cheekily, she now came up to her Original boyfriend-
ā€œSince you put up with my overbearing friend this weekend and her love drama- you deserve a little treat.ā€
ā€œOh, I do?ā€- let out looking down at his darling doppelganger girlfriend.
ā€œYou doā€- Elenaā€™s hands now landed on Elijahā€™s jeans, unzipping them.
Continuing to talk, she tugged them down, palming his already hardened cock. ā€Did I tell you that I love that you now continue wearing jeans, despite you getting all your memories back - though I so like you in the suits as wellā€
ā€œYeah-?ā€- Elijah muttered with a little throaty grunt escaping his lips.
Elenaā€™s hot breath against his lips had him now pleading with his eyes, arching his hips upward. He wanted inside her mouth.Ā
The doppelganger smiled crouching down, enveloping his hardness with her lips. The Original shut his eyes as she now drew him deeper in her mouth.
Elijah groaned, sending his blood racing higher as Elenaā€™s tongue twirled around his tip again. He shuddered as she now sucked him whole in. Elijah's hand clutched the thick brown strands of her hair as she again darted her tongue over the head of his cock. And then she bobbed up and down, her lips sealing tighter as she neared the head. His every muscle stiffened, adding to the strain in his body. Every chord, every nerve and every cell in his body was ready to explode. Arching forward now with his hips, Elijahā€™s groans became more ragged and more louder as she pumped him faster and faster until he neared orgasm, coming hard, his whole body now convulsing delightfully.
ā€œFuck - this was goodā€- he murmured trying to gain some of his breath back, smiling at the doppelganger, who brushed a bit of the come from her lips.
Tsuna and Cells at Work.
this hit me where it hurts all of a sudden and now I need to note it out.
Sawada Tsunayoshi dies, in a world where he was never in the mafia, yet had memories of it because both Byakuran and Yuni were in on it, still trying to find his place in the world.
Only, he ends up not so much dying as everyone thought he did; he just got microscopic.
Cue Tsuna ending up in The Body; he is very much a confused. (it takes him a ridiculously long time to realize just where he is.
He thanks everything and anything he has flames, because Immune Cells are terrifying.Ā
Likewise, he is so glad he is a Sky, because he needs all flames on hand to get threw this shit.
Still wonders why everyone looks so human, but at this point he is not going to question it.
He helps where he can, being a sneaky little guy and using his hyper intution when needs must.
He may or may not have kidnapped a cancer cell.. or three...
He may or may not have accidentally fixed them..
He may or may not have a new found interest in medicine now.
He ends up friends with Red Blood Cell (RBC) and White Blood Cell (WBC), and gets lost even worst then her.Ā
Yet somehow, whenever he and RBC get together, they either find just where they need to go or get into ten times more trouble.
Of course he ends up getting found out eventually, what with being an actual body.
he runs away a lot, but still keeps in touch with his friends.
But then things get sad when the body, for real, starts dying.
He knows it, the cells all know it, but not one of them gives up.
It is only near the end, when Tsuna feels nothing else can be done, that he makes the offer, letting his voice be heard throughout the entire body
ā€œAnyone who can still hear me, anyone still there, if you want to keep living, working, thriving, if you wish to still stay by each otherā€™s sides and laugh and cry... Come with me to the Outside.ā€
oddly enough, no matter the world, Tsuna is still very good at public speaking. Every Cell that still can, goes with Tsuna outside into a whole new world
Humanized Cells are very, very noteworthy, and a bit hard to miss. Civilains wouldnā€™t accept them.
Tsuna doesnā€™t know whether to laugh or cry at actually following in Giottoā€™s footsteps and making a vigilante/mercenary/doctors without border like organization. he really doesnā€™t.
(Of course so many Cells would go into medicine; it is as fascinating as it is horrifying.)
(of course there is killing; Immune Cells live to kill and protect.)Ā  Ā
Some Cells gets Dying Will Flames; this will be as terrifying as you think.
Dendritic Cell(DC)Ā is a Sun/Mist and knows so much; everyone is terrified, except Tsuna.
Macrophages are all Skies and are just as loyal to Tsuna as any other cell. This is even more terrifying then you think.
(many in the Varia have a crush. NK is also a Favorite.)
No one knows what to think of Tsunaā€™s group.
Everyone does on the other hand very much want an alliance with them (because good doctors are rare, but ones that can use their flames at the same time? yeah...)
Tsuna may not be a Mafia Boss, but damn does he have a place in the underground still.Ā
Tsuna may not know how this is his life, but sharing cookies with DC asĀ  Macrophage gets some more tea, discussing the new medical technique recently discovered, he canā€™t help but enjoy it.
This is home for him.
Human Papillomavirus An Infection: Administration And Treatment
Human and animal studies have proven that AHCC boosts the number and exercise of pure killer cells referred to as dendritic cells and cytokines. Smith said that these cells enable the body to answer infections and block tumor growth. As I stated above, one of many irritating things about HPV is that there aren't a lot of proven issues you are able to do to help your body's immune system battle the virus. The human immune system could be very complicated and generally terms, we're nonetheless undecided precisely the means to enhance it - see how difficult it was to search out and approve antiviral medication for Covid, for example.
This signifies that taking colloidal silver when sick may delay the duration of the sickness. When you take no much less than 15ml of colloidal silver twice a day, and in addition apply colloidal silver cream. People say that you can ensure of getting it killed especially colloidal silver for hpv when it's mixed with maintaining a wholesome diet meals. It may be contagious, meaning you will get it from contaminated individuals. The virus can also get into the body by way of open wounds, and might unfold when it treated.
In brief, he was crushed colloidal silver erectile dysfunction by Trekadoo Family Vacations colloidal silver erectile dysfunction him. The boy kept staring Trekadoo Family Vacations colloidal silver erectile dysfunction at her, with out blinking his eyes. Xiao Lin, who was never Trekadoo Family Vacations colloidal silver erectile dysfunction afraid to take a glance at others, tilted his head and checked out him.
The hormone containing IUD was simply shown in a research to scale back clearance of HPV,ā€ she said. Women with HPV need to decide with their physician if they want to cease taking the tablet and will end their present pack earlier than planning for their next methodology of contraception if they wish to defend in opposition to being pregnant, Landa suggested. Seed warts can hurtā€”so you might want to velocity healing. If you do not have signs, you may not know when the infection has cleared your system. If you've signs, your doctor will have the power to inform you whenever you no longer have the infection.
Benign focal lesions within the liver mustn't have computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging routinely, until there's a main change in clinical findings or symptoms. Patients with benign focal liver lesions who donā€™t have underlying liver illness colloidal silver for hpv and have demonstrated clinical and radiologic stability don't want repeated imaging. Repeated testing of hepatitis C viral load isn't essential except antiviral remedy is being given.
One widespread diagnostic methodology is in your physician to use vinegar to the warts which causes them to show white and turn out to be extra seen. Because these warts can grow inside your anus, your physician might conduct a bodily examination with an anoscope to verify the rectum space for extra warts. A biopsy could additionally colloidal silver for hpv be required to make sure the spots are indeed warts once they do not reply to preliminary remedy. Through CDCā€™s AR Lab Network, the Maryland Public Health Laboratory provides nationwide gradient strip technique antimicrobial susceptibility testing ā€”at no costā€”to assist in care of sufferers with doubtlessly drug-resistant gonorrhea infections.
In addition, they simply enter cells or tissues to reach targeted organs such because the cervix, liver, spleen, or others. Because of their biodegradability, heat sensitivity of buildings, and pH, they possess controlled-release attributes which make them capable for drug or molecule supply . For widespread warts, if receiving no therapy is acceptable to the affected person, this may be a viable choice.
My Struggle
My counselors that Iā€™ve had in the last year and a half suggested I should express what Iā€™m feeling in some form. I finally decided to give in and give it a try. Iā€™ll start off with a little back story before I jump straight in.
Iā€™m 22 years old, currently enlisted in the military and battling depression/grief/stress and everything else that comes with it. Almost 4 years ago now my father told me he was diagnosed with cancer. I wasnā€™t given any information on it, except that he was receiving treatment. At this point in my life I had just graduated boot camp and started my schooling for the military. I was 1000 miles from home and couldnā€™t do anything. My father, who was also prior military, told me to focus on school instead of him. But how could I? My father, my best friend, the man I looked up to and the man who taught me everything I know was fighting something that could so easily take his life. What could I do? Sit there and feel sorry for myself? Be worried about my dad? No, he wanted me to finish this schooling and so I would do it just for him. In the process of this 6 month school I lost 80% of my class. Not once was I deterred from making my father proud as I followed in his footsteps.
Upon graduating my school I received orders to a base about an hour from home so I could be close by during his treatment. It was not until then that I found out the extent of his diagnosis. He was diagnosed with Blastic Plasmacytoid Cell Dendritic Neoplasm (BPCDN) which is an extremely rare form of Lymphoma with no cure. With how the cancer presents itself, to most doctors who are unaware it seems to be Leukemia. When doctors begin treating for Leukemia, there is no response and time is wasted. Because of how rare it is, there is not much literature or research. After diagnosis most patients who receive treatment and a stem cell transplant will achieve remission for about a year before it returns. This was the case with my father as well. After seeing him suffer through the chemo, the bone marrow biopsies and the pain, I was glad to see him mostly back to his old self. When you have a successful stem cell transplant they refer to it as your ā€œnew birthdayā€ and have cake. The process is lengthy but they basically chemo you until you have absolutely no immune system, then give you healthy stem cells from a donor in hopes of the new one being able to fight it off.
During my fatherā€™s year long remission gave me memories that I will never forget. I was able to buy my first car on my own. He taught me how to drive stick on it and taught me how to work on it. My father taught me how to appreciate cars and sprouted my love for them. There were so many smiles, so many laughs and so much frustration (if youā€™ve ever worked on a car you will understand). Not that I didnā€™t have any great memories from before, but these were different. They were more profound to me, because after my fatherā€™s battle he had become himself again. A man I always aspired to be, but someone who he would never see me become. There are many more memories that occurred over this year, but I wonā€™t dig into all of those.
He relapsed in March of 2015 and it was back more aggressive than before. Time in between chemo was shortened as it would return in his bone marrow much quicker. An opportunity arose for him to become part of a drug trial at Duke University, so we quickly jumped on it and headed down to North Carolina. For 6-7 months my father was never within ā€œstandardsā€ to begin the trial. One of his blood counts would be slightly too low and it would get delayed. You couldnā€™t start the trial until there was at least a 2 week break from your last round of chemo. 6-7 long months of hoping and praying to hit the exact specifications of this drug trial and it never happened. Months before the fateful day of my dad passing, we went to an ice cream shop in NC that he had seen on TV. They served ice cream made with habenaros (named ā€œcold sweatā€) and another made with either ghost peppers or carolina reapers (called ā€œexit woundā€). We drove about 45minutes to get to this shop. He recorded my reaction to ā€œcold sweatā€ (they wouldnā€™t let me eat exit wound without eating its predecessor first and I didnā€™t want to destroy my stomach by compounding it) and laughed as I suffered (it was pretty funny). And just a month before he left us, was my step momā€™s birthday. We went to a restaurant called ā€œThe Angus Barnā€ which is voted top 5 steakhouses in the entire US. I ordered the absolute biggest steak they had on the menu, dubbed ā€œThe Tomahawk Chopā€. It was a 44oz bone-in ribeye and I absolutely devoured it. My dad and step mom were amazed at my feat and we all laughed about it. We all decided to have dessert on top of it all, of course with an after dinner cappuccino. Later that night my father was back to being in terrible pain, barely being able to walk and a completely different person than the man I knew. That night was one of the last times I heard my dad laugh and saw him smile.
The days leading to my fatherā€™s last moments are very hard for me to talk about. Being there for it all has imprinted on me and haunts me. He was in so much pain that it took us an hour and a half to move him 20 feet to try and go to the bathroom. No person should have to deal with that. With that amount of pain, with that struggle and frustration. I could see it in his eyes, despite all of the pain management medication. I couldnā€™t take it and I called an ambulance in hopes the hospital could help him regain strength. (At this point I had already been in North Carolina for about 4-5days helping my step mom so she could relax and get some chores done. I was running low on sleep because I would stay up at night and give him his medication on time. Doing what needed to be done.) We slept at the hospital in the room with him. He was in less pain the next day, but still visibly not himself. They ran some tests and tried to get a handle on what was going on. The day after that I saw my father, not a man who just looked like him. He was there, back to normal and joking around like his old self. He was smiling and lit the room up just as he always had done. There was a small flash of hope, but then a complete and utter downward spiral. Doctors said there was nothing left they could do. Our plan quickly changed to try and get him home so he could be surrounded by family and be AT home. That soon became a non-option as he quickly declined. (This next part will be very hard for me to talk about and I know you canā€™t tell how long it will take to write, but believe me it is awhile. Having to take frequent breaks to either hold back the tears or letting them go.) The morning of February begins with my Aunt and I driving to the hospital at 7am. We walk into his hospital room with my step mom playing Jack Johnson (one of his favorite artists). He was not responsive and had very erratic breathing. We sat there and talked with him, we knew he could hear us. He had a constant stream of morphine to keep him comfortable. I held his hand to keep him warm. He was progressively getting worse and worse. I called my sister (who hadnā€™t talked to my father in years) and told her that I needed her to talk with him, the end was near. I put her on speaker and she apologized to him for their fight and being so estranged. I couldnā€™t let him pass and neither of them ever have closure or have regrets. I knew how much he missed her in his life and how he wished he had a relationship with her. I couldnā€™t have that weight on my shoulders of them not having closure. My step mom followed suit and called all of his brothers, sisters and his mom. Everyone told them how much they loved him and how strong he was. After we got through the phone calls my step mom got the nurse and told them that it was time. As we sat surrounding him, the nurse delivered a large dose of morphine, which started shutting down his organs. I knelt next to his bed and held his hand. We all told him ā€œIts ok. You can let go now. We love you.ā€ It was the absolute hardest thing I have ever done. How could I tell the person who means more than anything in the world to me that it was ok to go? It wasnā€™t ok. I couldnā€™t lose him. Not now. His breathing slowed and he opened his eyes. He looked me straight in my eyes and I could see him thanking me for calling my sister. Telling me how much it meant. Expressing how much he loved us all. Just seconds later I watched him take his finals breaths and he was goneā€¦ 10:53 on February 23rd, 2016.
Almost a year has passed now and it isnā€™t any easier. Everyday is a struggle. I donā€™t want to get out of bed, I donā€™t have the motivation to do anything. I probably drink more than I should, but I canā€™t escape the reality that he is gone. I have had nightmares of his final moments, waking up and I canā€™t breathe, just as he was no longer able to. I try and remember the good memories and I sometimes can, but his last moments on this planet are forever burned into my mind. I miss him more than anyone could understand. After losing him, I am no longer afraid of death. I welcome it. I welcome the day I am reunited with him and we can go back to normal. I will not seek death, but if it should find me then so be it. The thing that kills me absolutely more than anything in the world is thinking how he will never meet his grandchildren or great grandchildren. I know how excited he would have been and how involved in their lives he wouldā€™ve been. And how everyone is now missing out on those memories.
I miss talking to him. I used to call him almost everyday after work and just catch up. Talk cars, football or anything else to keep his mind off treatment.
I am fragmented. I am not the same person I used to be and I never will be. I will never be whole again and that is just a fact. How will I get through it? I donā€™t know, but I will do my best to document it as things happen.
I am not the only person to go through this, but I hope that I am able to help others with my experiences or even open up conversation between people. I do hope that if you are in a seriously dark place that you would seek help. There is no reason to ever be ashamed for doing so. All you need to do is ask.
Can man ever build a mind?
The idea that we might create machines more intelligent than ourselves is not new. Myths and folk stories abound with creations such as the bronze automaton Talos, who patrolled the island of Crete in Greek mythology. These stories reflect a deep, atavistic fear that there could be other minds that bear the same relationship to us as we do to the animals we eat or keep as pets. With the arrival of artificial intelligence, the idea has re-emerged with a vengeance.
We are condemned to understand new phenomena by analogy with things we already understand, just as the anatomists of old named parts of the brain after fruit and nuts ā€” the amygdala (almonds) and the olives, to name but two. Although Hippocrates, in the fourth century BC, had firmly placed the brain at the centre of human thought and feeling, most early medical authorities had little use for it.
Aristotle thought it was a radiator for cooling the blood. The importance of the brain, for Galen 500 years later, were the fluid cavities ā€” the ventricles ā€” in its centre, and not the tissue of the organ itself. With the rise of scientific method in the 17th century, the brain started to be explained in terms of the latest modern technology. Descartes described the brain and nerves as a series of hydraulic mechanisms. In the 19th century the brain was explained in terms of steam engines and telephone exchanges.
And in the modern era, of course, the brain is seen as a computer. And yet, others argue, any metaphor is deficient: we have never met brains before and lack the appropriate language or concepts. The human brain, it is suggested, will never be able to understand itself. You cannot cut butter with a knife made of butter, as a neuroscience friend recently said to me.
As a neurosurgeon, I have to accept that everything I am thinking and feeling as I write this is a physical phenomenon. Throughout my career I have seen patients who have suffered personality change (almost invariably for the worse) as a result of brain damage ā€” it is difficult to believe in any kind of ā€œmindā€ separate from the brainā€™s matter when you see your fellow human beings changed, often grotesquely, in this way. And yet it is a deeply counter-intuitive thought. I remember one of my patients, when I was operating on his brain under local anaesthetic, looking at the computer monitor that showed the view of his brain down the operating microscopic that I was using. ā€œThis is the part of your brain which is talking to me at the moment,ā€ I told him, pointing with my instruments to the speech area of his left cerebral hemisphere. He was silent for a while, as he looked at his own brain. ā€œItā€™s crazy,ā€ he said.
The human brain, it is often stated, is the most complex structure in the known universe. It consists of some 85bn nerve cells, each of which is connected to many thousands of other nerve cells, with some 150tn connections. You can, however, if you wish, reduce it to something that sounds quite simple. Each nerve cell is an input/output device that processes data. The input is electrical stimulation (or inhibition) by the thousands of other nerve cells whose output limbs, called axons, are connected to it via one-way connections called synapses.
The human brain, it is suggested, will never be able to understand itself. You cannot cut butter with a knife made of butter
Diagrams of brain nerve cells resemble trees in winter ā€” the tangle of bare branches are the dendrites, where the synapses are found, and the tree trunk is the axon. The output is a train of electrical ā€œspikesā€ fired down the axon, in response to the input of the nerve cells connected to it via the synapses. The axon is in turn connected to other nerve cells via the synapses on their dendrites. And so it goes, on and on, in a hugely elaborate dance. So, superficially, you might think the brain is a massive array of interconnected electrical switches. With modern, high-speed computers, which are massive arrays of interconnected electrical switches, surely it is only a matter of time before we build computers ā€” artificial intelligences ā€” that are smarter than we are? But how does such a simple design produce the extraordinary richness of human life and thought? And, for that matter, of animal life as well?
Recommended
Explainer: Towards conscious machines
Even our profound knowledge of physics and chemistry doesnā€™t begin to explain how this electro-chemical activity generates conscious experience ā€” the feeling of pain and the redness of the colour red, or the mysterious way that these seemingly identical electro-chemical processes produce sensations such as sound and vision that feel so different. And then there is ā€œtheĀ binding problemā€: how does all this disparate neuronal activity, spread out in both space and time, produce coherent experience? With vision, for instance, we know that there are separate ā€œcentresā€ for colour and movement and other features such as vertical or horizontal lines; somehow, these bind and resonate together to produce a single image without, as one might naively expect, reporting in to some final integrating centre, synonymous with our sense of self.
The fact that the brain is a physical system must mean, of course, that it is subject to the laws of physics and is therefore computable. As the physicist David Deutsch has argued in his bookĀ The Beginning of Infinity, following on from Alan Turingā€™s groundbreaking paper ā€œOn Computable Numbersā€, published in 1936, computers are not just another metaphor for the brain like steam engines or telephone exchanges. Computers are ā€œuniversal simulatorsā€ and can, at least in theory, simulate all the information-processing that a human brain carries out, although it might take an almost infinitely long time. This is not to say that the brain is like a computer ā€” a common misconception of Turingā€™s position.
The fact that the brain must be subject to the laws of physics poses problems for the philosophers, who continue to ponder determinism and free will. Some, such as Daniel Dennett, end up claiming that consciousness and free will are illusions, a position that I, for one, find rather hard to apply to my day-to-day life, especially as I struggle to get out of bed on a cold winter morning. The more interesting questions are the practical ones ā€” how close are computers to matching the human brain? How close are we to understanding how our brains work? And can AI help us understand our brains and vice versa?
The complexity of the brainĀ resides in the way in which the nerve cells are connected. Nerve cells are not, in fact, simple electrical switches. They are formed by organic molecules and not of the silicon and metal of computers. The connection at synapses is carried out by chemicals ā€” neurotransmitters, of which there are upwards of a hundred different types. Neuronal networks are dynamic ā€” they are constantly changing. They weaken or strengthen in accordance with how much traffic is passing through them. The brain is ā€” to a certain extent ā€” plastic. It can re-programme itself. In blind-folded people, for instance, cortical areas that normally process vision will start processing sound within 48 hours. The brain is topologically complex ā€” it may consist of billions of similar brain cells and their connecting axons ā€” but they are arranged in physically very distinct and precise groups and networks. Furthermore, neurons come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, even though they all share the same basic plan of dendrites, cell body and axon.
Brains do not come as isolated entities as do computers. They come with bodies, to which they are intimately connected. The bodies are their interface with the world, through which they learn to move, and, some would argue, there cannot be thinking without embodiment. The most plausible explanation for the evolution of brains is that they are prediction devices. To move effectively to find food, shelter and sex, we navigate using a model of the outside world created within our brains. Think of how confusing it is when you go down a staircase and there is one more or one less step than you unconsciously expected, or of the strange feeling as you reach the top of an escalator and the steps shrink. Perception is in large part expectation. Recent research is starting to reveal just how complicated the brain-body relationship can be ā€”Ā intestinal bacteria, for instance, seem to have a significant association with Parkinsonā€™s disease and autism ā€” well, at least in mice. Human brains also come as part of social groups. We are, after all, utterly social creatures.
The philosopher David Hume wrote that ā€œreason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passionsā€. Human intelligence is inextricably linked with emotions ā€” the pleasure mathematicians find in an elegant proof, the curiosity that drives a young child to learn by exploring the world, the fear that helps us judge risk. The disembodied, isolated and emotionless ā€œintelligenceā€ of a computer is far removed from all this. This is not to say that true artificial intelligence ā€” leaving aside the serious difficulty of defining the word ā€œintelligenceā€ in the first place ā€” is impossible. Itā€™s just that creating it might be rather difficult.
There are significant practical limitations on the extent to which we can experiment and explore our own brains. The resolution of the best MRI brain scanners, for instance, is about one cubic millimetre, and one cubic millimetre of cerebral cortex can contain up to 100,000 neurons and a billion synapses. The temporal resolution is a little less than one second, and much cerebral activity is measured in milliseconds, so what we see with MRI scans are, in effect, blurred snapshots. Although higher resolutions are possible, they involve immensely strong magnetic fields with which there are many problems. Electrodes inserted into the brain can sometimes be used when operating on patients as part of their treatment work-up, and this can allow very limited experimentation, as can computer-brain interfaces implanted into paralysed patients who can then control, after much practice, robotic arms. But this is, so to speak, only scratching at the surface. We often have to use animals instead, and they can never tell us what they are thinking.
Brains do not come as isolated entities as do computers. They come with bodies, to which they are intimately connected
One of the many major research projects into the human brain is the US-ledĀ Human Connectome Project, a multi-faculty collaboration that aims to produce a complete 3D wiring diagram of the brain. This has recently been achieved, but only at intermediate resolution ā€” not down to the level of individual cells and axons ā€” for the mouse brain. It will take decades, not years, to produce the complete connectome of the human brain. One complete connectome has been established ā€” that for theĀ tapewormĀ C. elegans, which has some 307 neurons and 7,000 synapses. But even this took many years to unravel, and a connectome is only the beginning of trying to understand how a nervous system functions, just as looking at a map of a city is only the beginning of understanding a city. A connectome is necessary but not sufficient. Even when the human connectome has been created, ethical considerations may well limit the extent to which the connectome of dead brains can be related to the thoughts and feelings of living ones.
AI came into existenceĀ in the 1950s when the first digital computers were being built. At a famous ā€” some would say infamous ā€” conference at Dartmouth College in 1956, the early AI pioneers, such as Marvin Minsky, confidently asserted that machines would outstrip human intelligence within a few decades. But AI progressed unsteadily over the next four decades, with several ā€œAI wintersā€, when funding dried up as a result of the signal failure of the field to deliver its promised results.
The breakthrough in AI in recent years has resulted from the miniaturisation of computer chips. Computers have become more and more powerful, permitting massive and rapid data processing. It has also been made possible by abandoning attempts to programme computers with symbolic logic, which the early AI pioneers thought held the key to imitating human intelligence. The remarkable progress in AI in recent years is largely based on ā€œneural networksā€ and machine learning, ideas developed decades ago but only recently put into practice. Neural networks only resemble brain networks in a very loose way. They consist of layered assemblies whose output can feed back and modify their input in accordance with a pre-programmed target, so that they ā€œlearnā€. They are engines of statistical association and classification. They neither explain nor do they understand. They have no internal model or theory of what is being analysed.
The literature, however, abounds in anthropomorphisms ā€” AI programmes are said to ā€œseeā€ and ā€œthinkā€. Googleā€™s DeepMind programmeĀ AlphaGoā€œvanquishedā€ champion Go player Lee Se-dol. This is all nonsense. It is easy to get carried away. The predictive texting on your smartphone prompts you simply by calculating the probability of the next word from mindless analysis of previous text. Google Translate has trawled the entire contents of the internet without understanding a single word.
This statistical approach to AI has nevertheless yielded remarkable results. And yet all current machine intelligences can only perform one task. This form of intelligence is reminiscent of the patients described in some of Oliver Sacksā€™ writings ā€” people who can carry out remarkable feats of calculation but are utterly helpless in normal society. And yet, despite the profound differences between the deep learning of AIs and organic brains, some recent research by the American neuroscientist Doris Tsao onĀ facial recognition in monkeysshows that the facial recognition area in their brains uses algorithms very similar indeed to the ones used by AIs.
The Holy Grail for AIĀ is ā€œgeneral intelligenceā€ ā€” a computer programme that could not only play games with simple rules but also perform other tasks, such as speech and face recognition, without being re-programmed. On present evidence it looks unlikely that neuronal networks and deep learning will ever be able to do this. Google recently created an AI that could recognise cats in photographs without even training the AI initially with pictures of cats. But this required the AI to be exposed to millions of pictures (it did not ā€œlookā€ at them), whereas a child probably only has to meet a few cats to be able to identify reliably all cats in future.
The energy consumption of a human brain is 20-30 watts ā€” a dim lightbulb. An exascale computer, capable of a quintillion calculations per second, scaled up to the size of a human brain, would consume hundreds of megawatts. Computer engineers talk of the ā€œvon Neumann bottleneckā€, a problem with classical computer design in which memory is stored separately from the Central Processing Unit, and one of the reasons why computers use so much energy.
Just as ā€œneural networksā€ were inspired by biological brains, there is now great interest in ā€œneuromorphic chipsā€, where computer chips are designed to physically resemble nerve cells rather than merely mimic them in the software program. This should, in principle, make computers much less energy-intensive. TheĀ Human Brain ProjectĀ (HBP), a multi-centre European research effort, funded by the EU to the tune of billions of euros, started with the grand ambition to build a brain ā€” initially of a mouse, then of a human ā€” from the bottom upwards, using computers. By creating a brain out of computer chips, the hope is that we might understand our own brains better. This is a somewhat optimistic inversion of Richard Feynmanā€™s famous remark: ā€œWhat I cannot create, I do not understand.ā€ Whether the HBP will achieve this or not is highly controversial, given that our current understanding of how brains work is so limited.
Filled with a fervour reminiscent of the Second Coming and the Rapture, people talk of the Singularity, a time when AI will equal human intelligence
One part of the HBP, using neuromorphic design, is Professor Stephen Furberā€™s experimental and newly launchedĀ SpiNNaker computer at Manchester University. It is designed to be both energy-efficient and to run models of brain function, among other things. It is too early to know, he tells me, whether it will lead to major breakthroughs or not, and this unpredictability is, of course, the very essence of science.
There are many other approaches. Simon Stringer and his team at the Oxford Laboratory for Theoretical Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence have recently published a paper arguing that better theoretical models of neuronal transmission, in particular trying to account for the binding problem, hold more promise of progress. The timing of the firing of nerve cells, and the delays that occur in the time it takes the nerve impulse to travel along axons, could, they argue, be of critical importance in explaining the binding problem. There can be no doubt that much more fundamental research of this kind is required.
I find it strange that some people are so certain that the arrival of ā€œsuperintelligentā€ machines is only a matter of time. Filled with a fervour reminiscent of the Second Coming and the Rapture, they talk of the Singularity, a time when AI will equal human intelligence. This belief ā€” which is all it is ā€” often comes with the hope that the human brain and all its contents can be re-written as computer code and that we will find the life everlasting as software programs. These ideas are not to be taken seriously, although they certainly sell books.
The future is always uncertain, and the future of AI and neuroscience is uncertain. Given the vast amount of current research in both fields, it is inevitable that tremendous progress will be made. Machine-learning AIs in their present form are already having a profound economic and social impact and will continue to do so. There is no risk, however, in the foreseeable future, of superintelligent AIs replacing us, or treating us as we have so often treated, and continue to treat, animals. Whether the effects of AI will be beneficial or malign will depend on the uses to which we ourselves put them. As to the possibility of machines acquiring general intelligence ā€” ā€œtrue AIā€ as some call it ā€” itā€™s anybodyā€™s guess. All that is certain is that even if it is possible, it is still a very long way away.
CaWF characters and (in my opinion) their cooking skills
Squad leader: The food he makes is absolutely amazing, very good and very healthy. He does not compromise on his nutrition as it's important to him. 10/10 he only eats outside if he's lazy to cook
2145: He does not care at all for how good, healthy or appealing his food is. It's whatever. He would eat a raw egg whole for breakfast, he would ask you if you want one too. Worst case scenario 2/10 best case scenario 5/10
IM1235: Decent, she could make a meal and it would be pretty good. As a red blood cell her sweetness tolerance is higher than most, so her dishes are probably very sweet. 8/10 kinda dishes if you don't mind the glucose
Reg T: Doesn't cook a lot but she probably wouldn't mess up if you gave her a recipe. She doesn't really know what to add to a dish to make it any better or what to avoid so it doesn't become worse. 6/10 at least it's edible and you won't hate it too much
HT: His taste for food is insane. He can make food that he enjoys but if you tried it you would question everything you know about him. 2/10 order your own food than rely on him.
B Cell: Surprisingly good, he would get infinitely more maidens if he were to show them his cooking skills rather than invite them to parties or the like, he can do both baking and cooking, very good for him. 8/10 in general
Memory Cell: I'd imagine he was the one who taught B cell his skills, prefers bitter tastes over sweet ones, 7-9/10 depending on how similar your taste is to his
Mast Cell: Terrible. He can only do cup noodles. All his effort goes into Cellor-sun, not self preservation. 1/10 if you were to make him make an actual dish.
Eosinophil: I like to imagine she can bake pretty well, but her cooking is more or less average. Baking 10/10 cooking 6/10
NK: She is prepared for every scenario her little head can think of, taught herself cooking because what if she gets stranded and lost out in the wilderness?! 7/10 She will not risk herself dying from food poisoning
Dendritic Cell: Surprisingly horrendous. You do not expect a sweet guy who has good sewing and knitting skills be this bad at cooking, so it makes it all the more worse. 0/10 always eats with his colleagues who can cook or goes outside to eat.
M cell: A bartender who sells food on the regular definitely knows how to do it. Maybe his depression dampened his skills but it's very good, the bad reviews on his shop never mention the cooking, only his personality after all. 10/10 KT is on par with him which is why he only asks KT to help him at the bar sometimes.
3033: If you gave him the recipe, he'd find a way to mess up something (he doesn't even know how it goes wrong). He gets frustrated at it so he doesn't do it that much, at least he can make instant noodles with a few extra bits here and there. 3/10, he wishes he could do something about it.
Cross: Surprisingly very good. Maybe it's a hobby of his, maybe it's just him trying to imitate his squad leader, who knows. Good at improvising with ingredients, especially since the budget at the T cell station is so limited, he has to make whatever work. 9/10 he could somehow make bacteria taste decent
I Asked a Med Student What He Thought About Cells at Work!
Cells at Work! has become one of the biggest hits of the season, entertaining and educating fans about the fundamentals of our own biology. Social media has been watching the series closely for hidden lessons taking place in the background. But with every story arc of the series, important new questions arise. How accurate are the events in Cells at Work!? Can I watch this instead of going to Biology class? I went to great lengths in search for answers, asking my friend, former housemate, and current med student Jean to fact check the series. I got a whole lot more than I bargained for, as he believes an education in biology can help forecast the trajectory of the entire series!
Letā€™s start with a bit of self introduction. Can you share some of your credentials?
Jean: Sure! My name is Jean and I'm currently a 3rd year allopathic medical student in the US. Prior to medical school I obtained my degree in molecular biology and worked as a research coordinator in the field of cancer clinical trials.
Ā  And youā€™re pretty familiar with anime, right?
Jean: I started watching anime in my early teens with Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho on Cartoon network and once I realized there was a whole world of other genres and series, I was pretty much hooked. I generally will read the manga accompanied with any series I watch since I think there's some visual storytelling lost in the transition from paper to animation. I'd say I'm somewhere closer to a casual anime fan and tend to watch more shonen series' than anything else. Recent stuff I have been into have been My Hero Academia, Boruto, and Overlord.
When I came to you with this, Cells at Work!Ā was already on your radar. Where did you first learn about it?
Jean: Yeah, it was intriguing! I saw a clip of it on Youtube and within a few seconds realized what the premise was. I just recently finished taking part 1 of my medical licensing boards so certain things really jumped out at me.
Ā  Now we just passed episode 3 and youā€™re caught up?
It's pretty amazing. I realized that, when studying for biology/physiology/immunology, you create these quasi narratives in your head about how some things work. Great example, neutrophils are generally your first line of defense to any sort of inflammatory insult. I like to think of them of single-minded little soldiers roaming and ready to respond to anything when need be. ā€˜Lo and behold, the anime pretty much conveys this exactly.
There are some other things that I didn't expect as well; platelets have easily become one of my favorite things. [Laughs] Biologically, I think they're kind of boring, but the anime attaches this really funny and endearing image of these little kids just trying to do their best and itā€™s super important!
Not only that, I've been really struck by how accurate certain things are thereā€™s a scene that jumps out at me which is of the platelet kids laying down a massive fibrin clot. Ask any medical student about the coagulation cascade. Itā€™s probably one of the more annoying things to memorize leading up to boards, but the basic idea along with some key initiator molecules were all there in the scene!
GP1B binding to Von Willebrand Factor, the addition of the coagulation factors to lay down the fibrin clot and the grand follow up of secondary hemostasis of everyone being brought together to keep the clot stable, it was pretty brilliant! Obviously, some details were missing (there are 13 coagulation factors) but the idea was conveyed very clearly and way closer to reality than I would've predicted out of an anime.
Ā  I did wonder about that. Both Red and White got caught in the clot but they make it back into circulation. I sort of doubted that would be the case?
I think thatā€™s a bit of the anime offering a happier and less complicated picture of the reality. Some of those cells might make it back to circulation, but more than likely would be cleared from the bloodstream via the spleen shortly after. Basically what you're seeing is a scab by that point, and what do we do with scabs? [Laughs]
I was worried they might end up seeing the outside world...
Also, the 3rd episodeā€™s depiction of T-cell activation is another really really tough concept in medical education that was tackled pretty well. I'm actually really looking forward to keeping up with the series because I'm really curious about how they will start portraying pathology associated autoimmune disorders and cancer.Ā For an anime this adds a fun a plot twist since some of the characters may not always be heroes!
Ā  So that's where you hope the series will go next?
I'm about 90% sure it will. The progression of the episodes is actually very reminiscent of how you teach biology/physiology/immunology:
1. Establish and define the roles of the various players in the system2. Establish where they are and how they interact3. Start introducing pathology that alters these roles and interactions in ways that cause disease.
Funnily enough, that's kind of how anime plots work too, so I guess I would be surprised if they didnā€™t go that direction!
Ā  Wow, so the narrative has sort of been structured like a biology course?
Yup! Our hero is our friendly blood cell. Her pathway, job, and friends on her way are important to understanding the narrative as well as how we understand what blood is supposed to do biologicallyĀ Ā World building in anime is important and actually the body offers a convenient blueprint for doing this in that our little blood cell has to get to certain places all the time! They've already set up some foreshadowing that we'll learn a bit about the spleen, lymph nodes, etc. The metanarrative is very much is lending itself to a systems based model on teaching biology/physiology/immunology from the starting point and perspective of a red blood cell which, to a bio nerd like me, is pretty damn cool.
Social media has taken to the series showing off examples of biological features that have been introduced but not necessarily explained as sort of submarine lessons, like the idea of platelet satellitism being represented by the platelet riding on Whiteā€™s shoulders. Did you pick up anything like that?
I think what is 'submarined' are actually some really cool basic things and not as esoteric as platelet satellitism. Streptococcus pyogenes and staphylococcus are a really good example. One of the big differences between Staph and Strep is that Staph forms clusters and Strep forms chains. The Strep villain has a long tail made up of little balls, like a chain, and our Staph villains dress is essentially the classic morphology of staph aureus. Both are gram positive cocci, meaning they show up purple/blue on a gram stain, and what are cocci? Cells that look like balls! Thereā€™s so much just right there in just the design. Additionally, Staph classically causes yellowish golden exudates, so it makes sense that sheā€™s yellow in the anime.
Ā  Also, Strep hiding in the box! Strep can actually use something called antigenic mimicry to avoid detection by the immune system, specifically the neutrophil receptors.Ā Oh, and those boxes the platelets needed help opening! If you noticed, they read Ca2. Thatā€™s calcium! All our cells have intracellular stores of calcium and those little platelets need that calcium to do their job properly. Itā€™s super underemphasized, but I thought was a cool detail.
Earlier on it sounded like you had some predictions for where the series would go?
I am really really looking forward to how they flesh out more of the Lymphocytes. The relationship between Neutrophils, Killer T cells, Helper T cells, Macrophages, Dendritic cells, and Activated T cells + B cells is super complicated. Lymphocytes have a bad rap for leaving a lot of collateral damage (that's one of the mechanisms of autoimmune disease) so spoiler alert! Our heroes may find themselves at odds with each other soon enough.
Ā  Ā Ā  Are any of your fellow students aware of the show?
I'm not sure! I know a few are anime fans like me so I'll probably bring it up soon and see. I think a few might wish the show came out earlier when we were studying for boards! [Laughs]
New curriculum?
Honestly, I was impressed with how they portrayed T cell activation. That visual has essentially replaced my internal paradigm on how I remember it now. It has been a really fun and fairly accurate picture of the big concepts at play, but I should be clear that cells at work in no way replaces a medical education.
Ā  Ā  Alright, final question. How do you think youā€™d enjoy the series if you werenā€™t in medicine?
Itā€™s hard to detach from that as a med student. The best I can describe is similar to what I loved about The Magic School Bus as a kid but, in a lot of ways, itā€™s a lot better. There's a continuous narrative here and I'm really invested on what our clueless young red blood cell gets herself into next. I absolutely think anyone who has any vague interest in biology/science would enjoy it. By no means do I think having any sort of official education on anything is required and if anything its just a cool homage to how amazing our bodies and how hard their working for us!
Also, random thought. Itā€™s funny because our brainless Red Blood Cell hero kind of has an excuse for always getting lost: RBC's don't have nuclei! They don't come with instructions like many of the other characters, they kind of just carry whatā€™s around and move on.
From an anime perspective I think its fun, itā€™s engaging, and for whatever reason I'm invested in the characters and I want to see where the RBC gets lost next; I want to know how she meets back up with our heroic WBC and gosh damn it, it's cute seeing those platelets just trying to do their best!
Whoa I sent you a lot of asks! (Sure thing. I never know how long,a thought grows but Iā€™ll try to be more mindful. I can imagine how messy that could get).Ā
Lol those fic snips are adorable. 3803 thinking sheā€™s confiding a big secret about 1146 possibly liking her (she would confess to a platelet XP) only to discover sheā€™s talking to one of 1146ā€™s confidanteā€™s in love advice.Ā
Killer T is a overly sensitive mess of social drama. He would feel like the world was out to get him, when only two cells were teasing him (Commander T and Dendritic would totally be the ones poking at his non existent love life ā€˜if even someone hopeless and workaholic like u1146 can get a doting girlfriend whatā€™s that make you? =D). Poor u1146 would get the brunt of his ire. 3803 would be in the dark because 1146 wouldnā€™t tell her. Sheā€™d just think Memory T was being a good friend with all of the 'congratulatingā€™ he does.
1146 rethinking his all calls being friends dream should exclude his friends with 3803.Ā
Ooh. A RBA sequel with this plotline would be awesome! Honestly even after I posted that I wondered if 3803 forgiving Cancer now Normal cell quickly would be likely. Then I read more RBA and I was like nope she wouldnā€™t be that at ease. I think thinking about it, 1146 would talk to her about it. How Cancerā€™s were made. If only because I think sheā€™d ask for one reason or another (I could see her asking him before a newborn ex Cancer cell pops up. Just to get more closure and info so she knows what sheā€™s dealing with better just in case). I think with 3803 sheā€™d forgive. But she wouldnā€™t forget. Like you said sheā€™s not obligated to be his friend and Cancer cell has A LOT to apologize for. But at the same time she knows logically heā€™s not a threat so she has no reason to be afraid of him. But she still doesnā€™t like being alone with him.Ā
That would actually be a nice way to give a newborn Cancer normal cell character development. Heā€™s lost his one excuse to hurt others and now can live pain free w/o persecution. Even better only a select few immune cells know of his past as Cancer and 3803 is the only non immune who knows. Ex Cancerā€™s journey could be earning 3803ā€™s and 1146ā€™s true friendship and forgiveness. Basically learning how to really love someone and maybe some different perspective on the world. Idk. I kind of like the absolute monster learns humanity if done well.Ā
But who knows if heā€™d ever do it well. =P Cancer did a lot of bad things and heā€™s got a lot of entitlement and god complexes to work out. He probably still would stubbornly deny heā€™s as responsible as he is of the things he did.Ā
How ironic. Cancerā€™s dream of a world where heā€™s accepted and itā€™d start out as a nightmare. Heā€™d still hate what he hated. Heā€™s just useless to do anything about it now.
Iā€™m thinking his and 3803ā€™s relationship would be the most complex. Not just because of how he hurt her. But heā€™d have to decide if she was soneone he wanted as a lover or a mother. Near the end of RBA it seems 3803 leaned on seeing Cancer as a child.
Oh boy 1146 would not even want to tell 3803 about Cancerā€™s new situation. But heā€™d have to because the thought of her being scared/confused while running into ex Cancer cell w/o any warning would be unbearable for him. Like you said, as much as heā€™d understand and pity ex Cancerā€™s situation. Ex Cancer still hurt the cell he loves most (and is in love with? Yeah I could see 1146 refraining from confessing to 3803 if he hasnā€™t by then. If only because of what Cancer did to her and being afraid he was pushing too much on her too soon). But the way I see it. Ex Cancer has this same weird ability to wind up everywhere 3803 is. They get in all sorts of situations. Even situations where 3803 would have to rescue him because sheā€™s still a RBC and she will help any non threatening cell she can. Itā€™s her job (she wonā€™t be happy about it. But sheā€™ll do it).Ā
Pfft, just imagine if 3803 and ex Cancer wound up caught together in the platelets. Theyā€™d be smooshed together and ex Cancer wouldnā€™t mind. 3803 wouldnā€™t get ptsd flashbacks and wonder how her luck is so bad. Meanwhile a agitated 1146 is on the outside for once asking for someone to bring the darn scissors for once so he can rip ex Cancer cell out of there.Ā Ā
Yes. Ex Cancer would totally be devoted to her even when canā€™t stand his presence and wish heā€™d go away or never came back. If she was injured heā€™d visit her in the infirmary and refuse to leave her side. 1146 would definitely try try to be sympathetic but heā€™d totally be overprotective of 3803ā€™s wellbeing and make her state of being a priority (can you imagine the drama if 1146 ended up saving ex Cancer because he was closer but lost track of 3803. Heā€™d have to deal with the fact he did his job but wants to find 3803 and hope sheā€™s surviving this latest invasion. Then ex Cancer runs off to find herā€¦ Total mess).Ā
Yeah Iā€™m rambling. Itā€™d all be a messy mess of relationships and scars and whether or not some can heal. For everyone. Ex Cancer has a lot to consider and isnā€™t exactly All Right either. Which I guess would drive him to obsessed over 3803 again. Be it to ensure her safety and warn her friendship. Whether heā€™s doing it because he genuinely feels bad and wants it for real or because heā€™s at a lost and needs something to fuel his drive for life. Not even he knows
Thanks for the responses and again for RBA! Have a great day!
Forgot to mention. Just imagine in that RBA sexual scenario where 1146 talks about Cancer's origins with 3803 because he's showing he knows two sides in how he deals with ex Cancer now. 3803 crying because she's sorry she can't get over her trauma and forgive easily as 1146 can and thinks she's less kind for it. 1146 feeling horrible for unintentionally making her feel bad and hugging her. Admitting he still feels rage over what Cancer did to her and doesn't believe he'll ever forgive ex Cancer.
~~~
Thank you so much, CAW Anon! I really appreciate you doing this for me. :D
Get ready for the last chapter, Iā€™ll be uploading it soon. ;)
That platelet situation, heheheh. That would definitely be a disaster and a half, especially if Non-Cancer and 3803 were stuck together. I can only imagine how awkward and terrifying it must be for 3803 (depending on how long ago the Cancer incident was and when Non-Cancer was born).Ā
Like:
AE-3803, unfortunately, was having a bad day.Ā
She managed to finish only a tenth of her packages, she managed to get lost en route to the heart, and finally, the body had decided that it was a great day to get their elbow scraped. The abrasion would have been fine (more work for the immune cells and the platelets), but 3803 had taken the wrong route and was now stuck within the blood clot.
Normally, 3803 would have weathered the incident with a smile on her face. However, once she found out that she was chest to chest with him, 3803 knew that sheā€™d rather be phagocytized or sent to the spleen.
ā€œLittle Miss--ā€
3803 scowled up at the cell before brusquely turning away so that she could watch the platelets construct more clots.Ā
ā€œDonā€™t call me that.ā€
The normal cell who used to be Cancer looked taken aback by 3803ā€²s attitude.
ā€œLook, I already--ā€
3803 glared at him before her eyes softened and she ducked her head low.
ā€œLook, Iā€™d rather...ā€ She took a shuddering breath before facing him once again.Ā ā€œJust... Be quiet, please. I canā€™t-I canā€™t do this right now.ā€
For once, the cell who had once been Cancer, acquiesced to her demands as he fell silent and contemplative.Ā
It was going to be a long day.

Flux Cored Arc Welding With Ceramic Backing Tape.
The kind of plastic molding called plastic welding is very similar to steel or steel welding, only plastic welding seals and also molds two pieces of plastic with each other rather than some metal product. When burning cinders land on the roofing surface area, metal roofing is thought about to be a fire retardant product as well as could help reduce the possibility of fires spreading out. 4 key methods in MIG welding consist of globular, short-circuiting, spray as well as pulse spray. Nevertheless, welding rod usage is not the only prospective resource of manganese exposure. If you have accessibility to some steel as well as a welder, you might wish to try to find out welding on your own. Growth or opening is the procedure of shearing a metal plate in a press to create gaps that are surrounded by interlinked bars as it stretches to a sheet. Richard A. Manfredi has created aboutA structural design company concentrating on steel buildings, modular workplaces, material handling devices, custom mezzanines as well as industrial covers. The last one I enjoyed really did not appear to explain certain information of the process he utilized in arc control and also welding thick objects. Steel Slug 3 saw an upgraded Vapor release earlier this year flaunting on the internet multiplayer and leaderboard support. Constantly put on security goggles with side shields under a welding mask or handheld face guard. Given that there has actually been no identifiable change made to these games, there should be no reason for so many fabulous DVD megabytes and also gigabytes to go entirely unused when they might have been carefully filled with other Steel Slug goodness. I believe that steel art is an extremely fascinating topic, although I don't know much regarding it. Thanks for sharing the valuable info. This process is hereinafter described as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or MIG welding (Metal Inert Gas). Side Bar: Make sure you review your MIG welding directions very carefully as well as do exactly what they state. There are some properties of aluminium that makes it so hard to fabricate in the conventional procedure. One more concept is to browse the web & check out the great deals of welding forums & ask about the different welders. While the steel fabricationindustry is growing, it is essential to select the business that will certainly ideal offer your requirements. Oxy-acetylene welding causes two different steel items to bind after the production of some shared pool of metal in the interim room. Work for a Cowboy, Salt the Injury and also Self-destruction Silence continuously grow this genre of death metal songs. I kept flexing a little forward as well as tilting my head and also arms down to kind and check out the display. Welders' flash takes place when the eyes are revealed to the bright ultraviolet (UV) light created by arc welding tools. Yet rather than constructing an item from the bottom up, Carvey carves it from a solid block of material. Air conditioning is still looked after by the huge capacity high volume fan nevertheless a Fan As needed (FOD) system takes care of the procedure of the follower which leads to a cleaner device do to decrease particle consumption when not welding. Late in 2015 Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an effort to bring manufacturing jobs back to New York City; component of this is Futureworks NYC ", a collection of manufacturing solutions and also rooms that call the NYC-owned Brooklyn Army Terminal house. In obtaining the connections between the bending moments and flexure (flexing) tensions as well as in between the Shear forces and Sharing anxieties the list below assumptions are made. Stud welding is regularly used when affixing appearance sheets to sub structures. The pure light weight aluminum ingots could now be reused for later spreadings as well as will certainly not produce as much slag as in the past. This may be the latest re-release of traditional Kojima-helmed Steel Equipment tasks, but Konami is venturing out on its own, as revealed throughout Gamescom, with the distinctly different Metal Gear Endure It's a plain change in direction for the Metal Equipment name, yet it does look intriguing at the minimum. Now we're no mathematicians, but we're fairly confident Metal Slug 4 & 5 do not take up 2 gigabytes apiece. When aluminium and fluoride are with each other in water in a 1:6 molar proportion, AlF6-3 is the most common kind, even in rather reduced focus. Highett Metal sells high quality machining bars of aluminium, copper in Melbourne For wide variety of scrap steel in Melbourne connect with Highett Metal. This procedure can be made by means of matched male as well as female roller dies, or by passing sheet or a strip of steel between rolls of the desired pattern. Metal roof covering doesn't have any type of floor tiles that break short, and also the roof shingles do not fall apart. Since welding is a kind of sculptural or manufacture procedure that can involve extreme warm applied to thermoplastics as well as metals, it is needed to leave such a work to specialists. We're going to cover the metal option, as this has actually become an increasingly strong, prominent choice amongst homeowner as well as home builders. http://unmassagerajeunissant.info -cutting, CNC punch (multi-tool), Computer system Numerical Control or CNC are some of the most contemporary sheet steel cutting treatments. Roof-only structures as well as stores requiring frequent gain access to are restricted by X-braces.
Increase your voltage as a lot of change cored cables like a longer arc length and in wire welding voltage or arc length. The use of polymer electrolyte can protect against dendrite development, though achieving this is difficult as well as has actually stumbled past efforts to advertise lithium steel polymer cells. . If you need to relocate your patient to a wheelchair it is best to rest them upright; turn the body parallel to your personal then positioning your arms around the his/her waistline while flexing at the knees raise the individual to standing setting to put them in the wheelchair. The majority of short circuit transfer welding is finished with reduced voltage as well as usually using Co2 or a Co2 gas blend. Individuals who use cutting equipments normally possess the abilities called for in manufacturing as well as creating of various sort of completed items such as furnishings, signposts, frameworks, and a whole variety of metal, plastic as well as other strong surface items. No. Placing http://unmassagerajeunissant.info/garcinia-clean-rapide-et-une-perte-de-poids-efficace/ in your microwave will certainly start a fire prior to and also damage the toaster oven before it thaws. In the immersed arc welding a granular change is included right into the weld zone which creates a thick layer, safeguarding as well as protecting the liquified slag. There have actually been various styles by several welding set makers for many years, from nylon-coated to even push-pull systems (that have a tiny drive electric motor in the weapon). There's currently a scarcity of competent welders (great deals of jobs) and also the pay is as great or far better than coal mining.
