New publishing announcement!
Hi guys!
I know it’s been a long time since there’s been news about The Wicked Powers. I’ve actually been sitting on information for a long time because I was not allowed to talk about it. It was making me pull out all my hair, so I am super glad to be able to share the following announcement with you: The Wicked Powers is scheduled for publication, and will be published by Walker Books in the UK and Random House in the US.
There’s a bunch more about this announcement, including the announcement of a brand-new YA romantasy series I’ll be doing called In Fire Foretold. That will be published by Pan Macmillan in the UK (same people who published Sword Catcher) and by Random House in the US.
I know there will be a lot of questions about what my schedule is, why things are coming out when they are, whether I have anything coming out next year (Yes, The Ragpicker King, the sequel to Sword Catcher, and also for those who participated in the Kickstarter, those four books) and the overall future of everything Shadowhunter-related. So I will be doing followup announcements to address all that stuff, but first, here are both press release from my publishers in the US and then in the UK with all the info!
GLOBALLY BESTSELLING FANTASY PHENOMENON CASSANDRA CLARE TO PUBLISH FINAL TRILOGY IN THE ‘SHADOWHUNTER CHRONICLES’ AND NEW DUOLOGY WITH ALFRED A. KNOPF BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS First book in THE WICKED POWERS to release in Spring 2026
(New York, NY, April 5, 2024)—Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, will publish five new books from #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cassandra Clare, whose novels have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, been translated into 43 languages, and published in more than 60 countries. The new publications will begin in Spring 2026 with the first book in THE WICKED POWERS trilogy, the sixth and final series in Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy franchise The Shadowhunter Chronicles. Also slated for publication with Knopf is a brand-new YA romantasy duology, IN FIRE FORETOLD. The news was announced today by Melanie Nolan, VP and Publisher, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, who acquired North American rights from Suzie Townsend and Joanna Volpe of New Leaf Literary & Media in a highly competitive auction. Michelle Frey, Senior Executive Editor, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, will edit both series.
Cassandra Clare mesmerized readers across the globe with the publication of City of Bones (2007), the first book in the Mortal Instruments series, and was quickly dubbed the “New Queen of Fantasy” by the Wall Street Journal. The Mortal Instruments became the basis for the far-reaching Shadowhunter Chronicles, an intricately drawn world that has seen global success and has been adapted into both a feature film and television show. The books follow the Shadowhunters, a secretive race of humans born with angel blood, whose mission is to eliminate the demons that plague the Earth. Knopf’s first publishing collaboration with Clare, THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels.
IN FIRE FORETOLD is a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set in a new world with entirely new characters. The story centers a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers—the kingdom's princes, born to a cursed royal bloodline. The publication date for IN FIRE FORETOLD, as well as news of additional books to come from Cassandra Clare and Knopf, will be announced.
Says Cassandra Clare: "I am delighted to have Knopf and Penguin Random House as my publishers for this last trilogy in the Shadowhunters world. They truly understand what it means—both for the story and for my readers—to wrap up such an epic tale that has been told over so many years. I'm also excited to be launching my next YA series — a kickass portal fantasy that contains a ton of things I love, from a bold and reckless heroine to a magical wasteland filled with terrifying monsters that must be fought, to a love triangle with two very unusual cursed princes. I can't wait for us to bring these stories to the world."
Says Michelle Frey: “Cassandra Clare is a beloved author whose work has a massive following for good reason: she sucks you into a fully imagined world and never lets go until the last, satisfying page. I have long admired Cassie and am thrilled to be working with her on both the delectable final trilogy in the Shadowhunter Chronicles and the heart-stopping new love triangle she has dreamed up with IN FIRE FORETOLD.”
Random House Children’s Books (rhcbooks.com) is the world’s largest English-language children’s trade book publisher. Creating books for toddlers through young adult readers, in all formats from board books to activity books to picture books, novels, and nonfiction, the imprints of Random House Children’s Books bring together award-winning authors and illustrators, world-famous franchise characters, and multimillion-copy series. Random House Children’s Books is a division of Penguin Random House LLC.
UK/AUS/NZ:
Walker Books will publish three new books, the final trilogy in Shadowhunter Chronicles, the first coming in Spring 2026.
Separately, First Ink will publish a brand new YA duology, introducing readers to a fantastical new world of Clare’s creation, filled with enticing new characters and heart-racing action. With sales figures for Cassandra’s novels exceeding 40 million copies worldwide, translated into 43 languages and published in more than 60 countries, these are exciting and major acquisitions for both publishing houses.
Walker will launch THE WICKED POWERS in Spring 2026 with the first book in the trilogy, The Last King of Faerie. THE WICKED POWERS is the final instalment of Clare’s 23-book, young adult fantasy series, Shadowhunter Chronicles.
THE WICKED POWERS (Spring 2026), will follow Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn, and Drusilla Blackthorn from The Dark Artifices series as they are drawn into the final massive conflict between the demons and the angels. The novel marks the beginning of the final trilogy in Clare’s globally beloved series.
Cassandra Clare Says about THE WICKED POWERS: "I’m thrilled to be taking this momentous step in the Shadowhunter chronicles with Walker! They published City of Bones in 2007 and now we will be bringing this huge epic to a close together. With their creativity and dedication, I know they’ll do it justice."
Denise Johnstone Burt says: “We at Walker are immensely proud to have been Cassie’s publishers from the very beginning, when City of Bones launched the Shadowhunters into the world. Since then Cassie has become one of the most beloved writers in YA fantasy all over the world, and with very good reason. Her world-building and character portrayal are absolutely second to none and her books never fail to mesmerise her fans. I am delighted that we will be returning to the world of Shadowhunters once again in THE WICKED POWERS, and know Cassie will bring the Chronicles to a conclusion with her trademark brilliance and consummate style.”
First Ink will publish IN FIRE FORETOLD, a pulse-pounding YA romantasy duology set to delight all fans of Cassie Clare. UK and Commonwealth rights were acquired by Samantha Smith, Publisher of First Ink and Macmillan Children’s Books’ Fiction, Non Fiction and Picture Book List, from Danny Baror and Heather Baror-Shapiro at Baror International. The duology will be a super lead title for First Ink and will launch with a significant multi-channel communications campaign including national media, influencer and fan events [HBS1] and multimedia advertising.
IN FIRE FORETOLD sees the launch of a brand new world and set of entirely new characters for Clare. The story centres on a young woman who must learn to control her dangerous magical abilities in order to save her kingdom, all while finding herself torn between two brothers - the kingdom's princes - born to a cursed royal bloodline.
Cassandra Clare says about IN FIRE FORETOLD: “I’m so excited to be publishing IN FIRE FORETOLD with First Ink. This story contains so many things I love- it’s a portal fantasy that swings between worlds, where the gritty LA streets exist alongside a dangerous magical world filled with deadly monsters - and a uniquely tough heroine who’s ready to do battle on all sides. Not to mention some gorgeous princes with shady pasts. I know how much Pan Macmillan loves fantasy and how well they publish it so I’m thrilled for this partnership."
Samantha Smith, Publisher at First Ink, says: “Cassandra Clare is a phenomenon author who has delighted and surprised her millions of readers across the world for decades now. As a huge fan of both her YA Mortal Instruments series and latest adult fantasy Sword Catcher, I cannot wait for her to turn her formidable pen to a new, heart-stopping series in In the Fire Foretold and could not be more excited to welcome her onto the First Ink list”
Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, Managing Director at Macmillan Children’s Books, says: “ Welcoming Cassandra Clare to First Ink with a brand new fantasy world is very exciting - both for us and her fans. Her storytelling is second to none and her new duology on our list is the perfect partner series to her brilliant publishing that sits on our Tor list at Pan Macmillan.”

Successful policy innovations often come from the most unexpected people and places. As citizens quipped for a half century, only arch Cold Warrior Richard Nixon could open up Communist China. Today, perhaps, only some Donald Trump acolytes such as Elon Musk can make black lives matter, undoing years of bloody damage from progressive activists and indifference from everyone else. If there was ever a tempting target for the Trump administration’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), American policing and criminal justice is it, boasting whole orchards of low-hanging fruit. Success in protecting black (and all other) lives could simultaneously increase President Trump’s already substantial support among racial and ethnic minorities and free sensible Democrats from the grip of their party’s extremists.
For more than a decade — Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012, Michael Brown in 2014 — Black Lives Matter has been an untouchable sacred cow for progressive Democrats, attracting at least $10 billion in donations and goosing progressive voter turnout, per serious scholars such as Harvard’s John Della Volpe. The dominant BLM narrative paints police as an existential threat to black people. Activists even claim, falsely, that modern police evolved from antebellum patrols organized to apprehend escaped slaves. In reality, of course, such institutions as the city watch and the king’s guard date back to an era when there were walled cities and kings. Robin Hood’s great opponent was the sheriff of Nottingham, and, as Guy de la Bédoyère notes in his excellent book Praetorian, the first true lawmen were probably pensioned-off Roman legionnaires. Any paradigm that simply denies all of this essentially requires that activists smear critics as racist, contributing to the toxic state of contemporary discourse.
Moreover, progressives sympathetic to the BLM narrative, and some of the movement’s scrappers, occupy key positions in governmental and private bureaucracies, which — as we noted at a recent conference — they use to censor others. The paradigmatic example is Harvard administrators’ attempt to fire star economist Roland Fryer after he published a sophisticated article showing that, controlling for behavior, police do not disproportionately kill black people. Sociologist Musa al-Gharbi details how thousands of woke activists and bureaucrats have until recently enjoyed high salaries for and considerable emotional satisfaction from their imposing the “correct” paradigm and purging critics.
This sort of virtue-signaling seriously damaged Democrats at the polls, likely enabling Donald Trump’s decisive electoral win this past November. But has it saved black lives? Sadly, it has not, and neither have activist reforms. Nevertheless, since the BLM era began around 2014, more police have died on the job, and activists’ demonization of cops has likely contributed to this trend.
In fairness, the 2014–19 period saw a small decrease in police killings of civilians, with about 200 fewer dead. Alas, as we document in “Black Deaths: How Black Lives Matter Took Lives That Better Policing Could Save,” thousands more citizens, mostly black citizens, died during this period as homicide rates among black males spiked from 30 to 56 per 100,000. And even the era of declining police homicides — for all groups — appears to be over. As Covid-19 and the post–George Floyd anarchy contributed to a striking surge in crime, American law enforcement officers fatally shot 1,050 people in 2021, 1,097 in 2022, and 1,164 in 2023, compared with 995 in 2015.
For all our lambasting of activists and academics, city mayors and officials have hardly covered themselves in glory. The graphic murder of a single wealthy white tourist in 1991, with its implications for the travel industry, turned New York City policing around in ways that the killings of thousands of regular New Yorkers could not.
Decades later, top cops continue to protect important (and disproportionately white) people in downtown business districts and tourist spots, while throwing bones to progressives by de-policing the poorer, blacker parts of town that need protection the most, and where homicides have soared in the BLM era. One thing that police-union leaders and street activists have in common is a remarkable callousness toward poor lives, often “black lives.” That’s horrible but understandable given that high homicide rates among low-income minorities rarely get police commissioners fired or mayors voted out.
Enter the DOGE.
While supporters claim that the Department of Government Efficiency, headed up by Musk and until recently co-led by likely Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, can potentially save the U.S. hundreds of billions of dollars, smart critics note that most big federal spending today is in middle-class welfare programs such as Social Security and Medicare — the famous third-rail programs that politicos, including Trump, fear to slash. Absent such action, as National Review’s own Yuval Levin laments, “so far, the DOGE is pretty much a bunch of memes and an X account.”
With respect to Levin, he fails to see an opportunity. The reason to have smart, wealthy outsiders such as Musk onboard is that, unbound by the status quo, they can bring creativity and transparency to failing bureaucracies. Given that 87 percent of government employees are in state and local bureaucracies, there is no reason to limit the DOGE’s insights purely to the federal level of government. Though its role would be purely advisory, state and local governments that are open to unconventional ideas could greatly benefit from the DOGE’s counsel.
Regarding policing, for example, since the 1990s, the New York Police Department has transformed itself by learning how to hire better cops, fire bad cops, and use information technology to replace a costly paper-based system and position cops where crimes were most likely to occur. The results: an 80 percent reduction in police shootings of civilians and a more than 80 percent reduction in homicide, alongside a decrease in incarceration. In just a few years, New York went from being one of the nation’s most dangerous cities to one of its safest.
An agency like the DOGE could make suggestions of this kind to any governmental agency worth talking to. In the context of policing, this could look like advising departments not currently doing so to identify and incarcerate the few most serious criminals in every jurisdiction who are responsible for most crime, end the bizarre anarcho-tyranny of cities and larger entities that fund costly campaigns against such groups as clinic protesters and crosswalk desecrators while allowing theft below a certain dollar amount to go on at will, and most notably to ditch any expensive ceremonial activities unrelated to making arrests (“Throughout Pride Month, our painted cars symbolize . . .”).
If nothing else, the DOGE could intentionally become — as in some cases X/Twitter recently has — a go-to source for real data on topics that citizens fear to frankly discuss. High-dollar civic campaigns against “systemic racism and other root causes of crime,” for example, are unlikely ever to accomplish much — because “systemic racism” is not a significant causal factor for crime in 2024. In one of the most important and unremarked trends of the past 50 years, serious violent crime has increased by almost 400 percent between 1963 and 1993 — as welfare use increased and family stability dropped like a rock, but as racism steadily declined. This point should be made often and publicly.
Beyond policing, the potential scope of the DOGE is breathtaking. In our opinion, most things that large bureaucracies like government agencies and nonproductive Fortune 500 departments do are total wastes of space and time. Musk famously fired 80 percent of the staff of Twitter, and his platform runs slightly better today. That said, a very specific first goal for the DOGE should be to recommend that state and local governments cut the parasitical alphabet soup functions (BLM, DEI, CRT, ESG, SEL, NU-HR, AA) of as many public agencies as possible, at every level.
Doing that, and redirecting the focus of as many police departments as possible toward reality, would save not only billions of green dollars but also tens of thousands of black lives. Let’s go!

Act 4:15 - Honesty (Page 1)

Daniel
It was...weird, I guess. I'd never seen him so angry before, yet he stormed in and immediately started yelling at me.
Gideon told him. He told him everything! My father always says he'll do 'anything for his boys', then goes and tells Eli about my time as a witchfinder?!
He shouted that I should've told him sooner, that 'maybe he would have understood' if I hadn't have kept it from him. No, of course he wouldn't have understood! He'd have still been pissed off about it, of course he would have!
I bluntly told him it would have made no difference, because Eli's over-emotional and always jumps to conclusions every single time. Even after he knew it wasn't my fault and knew I didn't kill anyone, he's still annoyed at me. He seemed less annoyed at Father, who's killed hundreds of witches and stabbed Oskar in the leg, when I just scratched him. I told him that as well. I don't get it - why do father's and Oskar's bloodshed get swept under the rug when I'm being treated like a demon for doing comparatively little harm, in circumstances hardly within my control?
Eventually, he completely gave up listening to me at all, and simply told me to get out. Wouldn't hear me out any longer despite the fact that what happened was Volpe's fault, not mine. I attacked Oskar in self-defence. I wasn't going to let him kill me, was I...whether he was Eli's beloved adoptive father or not.
I grabbed what I could that was mine, and made my way out. No soppy goodbyes or anything like that. If he wasn't going to listen to what I had to say, then I didn't see the point of leaving on good terms.
I slightly regret it now, but did lose it with him. I told him that maybe Father was right, that I should have never trusted an Annorin- that they're all entirely self-serving. I tried not to be swayed by what everyone said about them, and in trying to be open-minded- well, look how that turned out.
It's been a while since. There's no point trying to fix anything with Eli. He doesn't want to listen to me, he doesn't want to think about the complexities. He wonders why everyone lies to him when he can never handle the truth, or he refuses to believe it. I don't see why that should be my problem.
"Daniel? It's nice to get a surprise visit-"
"More than a visit. I'm living back with you again because my partner kicked me out! Why couldn't you keep your mouth shut?"
Father sighs. He was expecting this, wasn't he?
"He deserved to know, Daniel."
"And I bet he reacted the same to you as he did to me. Now do you know why I didn't tell Mr. Over-Emotional about it? He doesn't care that I didn't kill anyone. I left a scratch on his father and nothing more. Yet you and Oskar can kill whoever you like and it's fine!"
Father hangs his head back, covering his face with his book. "If you love someone, you have to be honest with them. He would have understood if you explained this closer to the time-"
"No, he wouldn't have! Watcher forbid I was too busy worrying about having to murder innocent women or risk having my entire family killed to tell him about any of it! I wasn't going to say this, but I don't care anymore- would you have told Ruth about what you did?"
His face says it all. I've gone too far. "Daniel!"
"It's a simple 'yes or no' question."
"I'd like to say I would have done, but in reality...I don't know." He changes the subject almost immediately. "Listen, Daniel, I know it feels awful now, but you're still young - you still have your entire life ahead of you. Maybe Eli will come around after some time-"
"I'm not taking him back."
"Then there's plenty more out there that would be interested in you-"
"Here I was finally thinking I could start a life for myself, and now I'm back here catching fish with my father!"
I don't realise what I've said until Father looks down at the floor, and back at me.
"Is that so bad, Daniel? Is this not good enough for you now?"
I shouldn't have said that to him, should I?
After my time as a witchfinder, I got so used to the money and the fancy clothes that I completely forgot about my own father, and everything that he's done to keep both Josiah and I clothed and fed.
"No, Father. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-"
"Why don't you go and study? Your brother's doing well."
"You know it as well as I do, Father...Josiah's always been the smart one."
"That's nonsense. You're both capable of brilliant things. I'm more than proud of both of you."
"The weather's not so bad. Should we go fishing?"

💛 Gabarie
💛 reunion kiss / relief
The mission had taken longer than initially planned. Nearly two weeks longer. Him and the horses were tired. However, Gabriel finally caught the Daemon Lord, even if it cost him three of his brothers. He looked at the wagon behind him, quietly praying for their souls.
"Son, you've done well," he felt Cardinal Volpe touch his shoulder, "go home and rest. I'm sure Marie would be delighted to know you're alright." The tone sounded off, but he was too tired to care at that moment. Placing the mechanism that carried the Daemon Lord in it in the Cardinal's hands, he turns and heads back to his cottage. He had a wife to hold.
A wife who was more than happy to run out the door to greet him.
"My love! I'm so glad you're ok," she threw her arms around his neck and they met in the middle for a kiss. There was clear relief, but something else in her voice. "I was so worried when I hadn't heard from you."
"I know Marie. The demon took longer than expected, but I'm home." He smiled happily. Her arms felt more like home than their cottage.

≥ what's your role in the tragic play?_
desperate narrator
this story is a cycle, and you're spinning around it like a hamster in a ball being tormented by a cat. you know how this story ends. after all, you've told it a thousand times. but you try to change it every time. you love the people in this story more than anything. so watching them fall victim to the narrative breaks you in a way you can't begin to describe. but all you can do is tell the story── their story── with tears in your eyes. you're prone to anxiety and feelings of helplessness. you have so much love in your heart, and for once you wish it would change something. it didn't. it doesn't. it won't. but you refuse to stop telling the story. and you refuse to stop loving the people in it. in this way, no one is stronger than you. you just wish being strong hurt less.

palm.
you give and give. you are a gentle heart, broken but still standing... always lending a hand for those who need it, expecting nothing in return. you deserve someone taking your hand and kissing your open palm, the hands which have selflessly helped so many others.

Ds- chew toy please!
of course!!! thank you for the ask!! (and slight smut/nsfw warning)
Ray chances a glance at Fraser, but the Demon won’t meet his eyes. The figure steps into the low-light, single earring glinting against smooth, dark skin.
“Ray.” Volpe purrs, warm brown eyes roving over every inch of exposed skin. “Isn’t this a… surprise.”
“Volpe.” He rolls his eyes, fighting the urge to cover his crotch. “Didn’t know you associated with the creepy crawly of the pits.”

god bless. i will prelude this new era by talking about this. fun new au i can't fucking stop thinking about. uhm. im gonna be censoring like it's twitter cus i'm shy lol. uhhhh. we'll call it the lion's mouth.
here's kind of the start of this thought that just. fucking spiraled.
massive spoilers for dunm3shi ahead and linked. please please please please please read for yourself if you can its awesome and this ruins a big twist of the story if you're not aware
so. it's vaf in dunm3shi because ofc it is. the general gist is like, "i asked a wish-granting demon to grant my desire to kill my dad" [gone wrong] [gone sexual]
but the general setting of this au is sorta like. fresno as like a rogue or like a thief going down into the dungeon to get a wish granted [maybe the general allure of the dungeon being wishes and riches] to get revenge on hellmouth, maybe in this universe being some kind of bandit leader that they want to overthrow.
so dungeons in dunm3sh exist to contain demons. and demons themselves are some kind of reality warping eldritch creatures that can grant desires
and of course volpe is the demon in this situation. maybe like lurking at the bottom of the dungeon waiting for someone to manipulate into helping him escape the dungeon. and... fresno is a person with a lot of hidden and repressed complex desires. desires that can be twisted and used by him.
i'm thinking fresno asks for the power to kill their dad and take over after a long and arduous journey thru the dungeon, and maybe there's like some final test on behalf of volpe to see if they're "worthy" [rich in desires enough to devour] and while fresno's initial wish is kinda shit, he sees the Potential in so many of their desires, from the simple to the very complex ones [like wanting someone they can feel safe with, a desire to not be constantly performing a masculinity that feels so oppressive, wanting something to nurture and grow, etc] and turns them into the lord of the dungeon, completely unaware of his plans.
so a thing of lords of the dungeon is that you literally cant control your desires, even subconscious ones, anymore, and it starts a massive snowball of desire as the demons get more powerful and the desires get richer. fresno has a fucked up sense of forbearance in my head, where they refrain from basic and necessary things [like food love help etc] and indulge in more self destructive behaviors learned from hell on wheels and hellmouth because the former is a flaw and the latter is just earning the stripes. so they can't stop themselves from indulging, first with the usual, power, strength, etc... and then start clawing in deeper.
so a fun thing in dunmeshi is that while desires are devoured that doesn't mean they stop desiring things entirely if they like. survive lol.
and because i'm a sap i kinda imagine volpe as keeping fresno around as a source of food and desire as he starts carefully cultivating and curating their needs, infiltrating thru their walls and slowly reaching towards the lonely center. maybe he is lonely too. taking care of a sapling and getting attached to it perhaps.
but he also has an agenda. soooo a plot point is that the lion takes over lyos body when hes lord of the dungeon to grant his own desire to escape since he can't grant his own wishes a demon
sooo im thinking in typical volpe fashion, he tries to loophole himself out of the dungeon.
formulating a plan to grant fresno the desire of someone they can trust and even love, solidifying them as a source of nourishment and one he can repeatedly use to get desires [and maybe even gather followers like in the olden days to devour] and get a way to grant his own desires [i have in mind that he maybe makes it so that a partner of the lord of the dungeon also has power and solidified thru like, a marriage or something. cus lol, lmao] and he has a lot of work to do. mmostly because fresno is a stubborn one but you know, with the right magics... smile
narsty content warning. will use rot13 for this one. you have been warneddddd

Figured I'd offer a key in case anyone was confused on the characters involved.
The focus is on the Castle, which I wrote as The Legion.
The Son-The Father: Jesus and God.
The Fallen One: Satan.
The Snake: Walter Bernhard
Kin: General Demons, the ones summoned by Walter.
The Forgotten One: A boss battle in the DLC.
Four Holy Ones: Carmilla, Cornell, Zobek, and Volpe. Plays into the theory that Cardinal Volpe was an original founder of the Brotherhood.
The Fox: Cardinal Volpe.
The Bat: Carmilla, when she becomes Lord of Vampires.
The Little Bat: Laura
Turned Ones: The demons that were turned by Carmilla, specifically Olrox and Brauner.
The True One/The Prince/The Dragon: Gabriel/Dracul.
Let's play a game called, "What Author is Mono Obsessing Over?"
Or otherwise, Does anyone want to guess the story I was inspired by?
When they first came to life, they heard an overwhelming amount of noises. Noises of smashing, speaking languages they had never heard, footsteps on sand. Its eyes open, before shutting from the blinding light. What light! It had never seen such light! And this body. What body! A body? They had never had a body of their own. That meant the ritual worked!
They looked at themselves in a mirror. They were a tan man, with brown curls atop their head. Its hands rub through its hair. Is this what it was like to feel hair? With hands? It never had hands that could touch. Nor did it ever have hair to feel. They touched its face. It never had a face of its own. It could never obtain a face of its own. It never minded.
Stumbling on feet, graceful as a human child, it danced through the streets. The man this body originally belonged to was no longer present. Not that it would've given it back. They made a deal, and he followed through. This is their body now. The Prince called to it, and now it could fulfill his request!
But it did not get a chance to. As it grew tired, as was the nature of a child who had burned through their energies, a man in robes came before it. Though it did not know his name, it knew who he was. He was the son of the Father. Of Him. The Father who had casted out The Fallen One. It knew that he would exorcise them. So they fell to their knees, begging in multitudes of stumbling voices. Begging in voices that spoke in languages it didn't know.
They begged to not be sent back to the abyss with those who did not believe them. They needed to prove their Prince was real, and was stronger than The Fallen One. He did not grant it the mercy. They begged to be casted into the herd of swine, at least they could travel better, to find their Prince. That did not happen either. The swine dove into the cold abyss of the salted ocean, taking it back to the heat of the core.
The man was not saved. It claimed his soul, and made him a spot within themselves. It wasn't his fault that they couldn't fulfill their duty. But now they were stuck again. They needed to get to its Prince. The true One. The Ruler of Hell. So it began to scheme and plan. Sand dunes, changed into lush forests. Small villages and towns, turned into a grand Castle.
Within this Castle was the Snake. A man who was only interested in his own gain. A man, who was smart, without the wisdom in place. His arrogance could only be rivalled by the Fallen One, but it couldn't complain. Not when he summoned both it, and its Kin, to possess the castle. They grew stronger within his reign. Lived longer within the realm of man. It followed its rules from the man, even brain washing others to create an army unlike any other. Its kin, the Forgotten One, however, was not like them. It was aggressive, powerful, far more dangerous than it. No sane human would have tried to contain it, yet the Snake tried.
They hid, as four Holy Ones marched through its walls. The Holy Ones came to seal the Forgotten One away. It watched with curiosity, though caution. Its slithered and pulsated and dripped down the marble pillars, following these Holy Ones. It watched as the Snake lied to the Holy Ones. Lied about what brought about its kin. Only one of these Holy Ones didn't seem convinced. This one, The Fox, had found a relic in his patrol for its kin. A powerful relic. He took a shard of this relic, its black surface shimmering, showing the Fox parts of the future. Though, he did not tell any of the other Holy Ones of his find.
Seasons changed, as did the times. The Fox played his role beautifully. Soon, three of the Holy Ones became monsters. It had heard the gossip from many servants within its walls. It was stronger than the tie it had with the Snake. And the Snake knew he was only on borrowed time. The Snake tried to redeem himself, tried to send them back to the fiery abyss. But the Snake was too weak now.
It devoured the Snake, bringing forth the Bat and her offspring. Though all were illegitimate, it didn't care. It never minded human politics on offspring. She turned its kin into more of her offspring, taking their abilities from ever returning to the fiery abyss they had called their homes. It was never home to it. This was where they belonged. In wait for their Prince. Their saviour.
It waited for centuries. Centuries of serving, building, devouring the knights that stormed its walls. It waited for its Prince. It waited for the day for the True One to come. Its patience was rewarded. It overheard the Bat speak to one of its turned kin. "My lady, I fear the one to destroy you has been born. He is in the hands of the Brotherhood." The Turned One says.
"Many humans have tried, but none have succeeded, how is an infant to bring mine and my brothers destruction?" Was The Bat's arrogant answer. Oh, how it wished to answer her, but it knew better. The Bat would die to its Prince. As would many of her offspring. Even the Turned Ones. A few more decades. It could wait.
Compared to the millenniums it had waited, the decades felt like a breeze. Three decades and four years. But its Prince finally crossed the thresholds of its walls. It observed the man. Distastefully human, yet broken close to beyond repair. It just needed to wait a few more moons. A few more fights. A few more tragedies.
Soon, the Bat was burned in the light of the sun. But nothing came from the Bat's ashes, as the True One needed to continue his quest.
It could feel when the True One destroyed the Fallen One. There was a feeling in the air. A sense of peace. Yes. It knew its Prince was stronger. Now it could act. Spilling, dripping, sliding down the pillars and walls, it loosened the seal over the Forgotten One. Now, its plan of many millenniums would come to fruition, and it would reap the bountiful harvest it sowed.
The Little Bat, a daughter of The Bat, fought beside the True One. Their techniques were perfect beside each other. It watched as the Little Bat gave her blood to the True One. It could not watch as the True One fought the Forgotten One. It could only sit and wait. Wait for the True One to come back.
And he did. It watched as the broken body of the True One walked through its walls. Watched as the broken human body collapsed, succumbing to the Little Bat's curse. It made its move. Finally, it was able to touch the divinity beneath it. It made its offer, True One, we have waited long for your birth and arrival. Our savior. Our divine. My Prince.
Its tendrils cut through the human skin, the tendons, ligaments, meat, fat, tissue. Organs now splayed out of the corpse. It sliced the veins open, pouring its own blood through it, forcing the heart to slowly start back. It rumbles in glee as the Prince's eyes open. Welcome back my Prince.... We've been waiting for you to grace us with your divine presence.
From the torn human flesh, birthed The Dragon. The true savior of monsters, demons, and humans. As the Dragon came to life, breathing his first breath of life, it guarded him. As he stumbled on limbs he was not used to, like a lamb just born in the field, it was the dog, watching and waiting for those who would prey on its beloved Prince.
Everything it did was solely for the newborn Prince. If that meant tearing apart traitors and intruders alike to feed its Prince. If it meant becoming something akin to its Prince. If it meant towering over, making itself twenty times the size, building more and more, sinking low enough to take parts of the fiery abyss. It did it. For it loved its Prince, and it showed its devotions as offerings of safety and love. Building walls and secret rooms solely for its Prince.
The Prince made the offer. The offer it had strove for. An eternity beside its divine companion. One, it accepted. For the Dragon was nothing without his devoted Castle, nor was The Castle anything without its Dragon.

Áine
Róisín and I have been out most of the evening. I'm trying to get her more in touch with nature, and in turn, with her magic. I notice her gazing at the moon, lovingly, as if she were gazing at her mother.
"Today was fun!" she exclaims, skipping as she walks. "I hope we can do this again. Lunvin even came out and gave us a beautiful bright night to walk home to! That's because she's trying to protect us."
"The Moon is full of wonders and magic, " I tell her. "We wouldn't be safe without Her."
"Father is going to be so excited when I tell him I made another ball of magic!"
"Indeed! He's going to be very proud of you- just like I-"
Sounds echo through the trees, slowly growing louder. Unintelligble rage soon clarifies into fervent chanting...
"Mother! What's that noise?"
"Don't panic, sweetheart."
The voices are chanting against witchcraft- and not just against witchcraft, but about the 'dreaded wolf'... Reynold warned me that, someday, they would come for him. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. And, as usual, when they come for one of us, they come for all of us. I'm sure Volpe's lapdogs and Juniper's have combined forces.
I can't go to the monastery- I'll lead them straight to him. I have to go back home with Róisín.
"Róisín, we need to hurry back-"
"What's the hurry for?"
A man's voice booms out amongst the crunching of footsteps in the snow. When I turn my head, it's exactly what I expect.
The witchfinders approach, swords drawn, the moonlight glowing on their blades. Each one has a sick expression on his face. There's nothing to these men of their own- Volpe moulded them like clay to become his hunting dogs, who kill without question.
"Two young women out in the woods, this late at night? With no man to accompany them? So what are we summoning tonight, then? Ghosts? Demons?"
For a moment, I'm transported back to girlhood- hiding behind the tree watching my mother burn. That's when I feel Róisín's hands against my back, shuddering. She's trying to hold back tears. I am no longer the frightened little girl. My daughter isn't going to watch her mother burn the way I did.
"Get away from us."
"We aren't witches!" Róisín cries out. "We're just on a walk! Please don't hurt us!"
