Don't get me started on how they blatantly downplayed all of Mey-Rin's scenes and dialogue in the anime. I nearly cried rewatching it this week. Also, Charles Grey is a big jerk!
{my only complaint is that thIS DIDN’T MAKE IT INTO THE BOM ADAPTATION IN BEAUTIFUL ANIMATED COLOR. I FEEL CHEATED}

*vibrating in excitement for platonic yanderes*
Ok, so I haven't watched black butler in years, imma re-watch it soon tho, so if none of this makes sense it's cause my memories shit and you can just ignore this lol
Anyway, here's my idea/request, Obv platonic yandere Ciel with a young reaper reader (14-16)? Like maybe they meet through Grell who mentors the lil reaper. Or maybe like a young ghost reader, he meets during an investigation or smth.
Your free to pick which one obv, anyway. I hope you are having a wonderful day luv, make sure to eat and stay hydrated!
.。*♡ A/N: Lemon, I made you wait a little but I finally finished this request hehe, despite having changed it a little and distorted some historical facts. Funfact: Ouija boards were created in 1891, but for the sake of this fic let's all ignore that Ciel was born in 1875; btw yesterday was his birthday. Congratulations Ciel <33. Also, many people have a hc that his real name has something to do with stars, hence the nickname present in the fic. Having said all that, I hope you enjoy Lemon, I loved writing this! Happy reading everyone!!
.。*♡ Warnings: Platonic yandere content, spoiler about Ciel's brother in case nobody knows about it, ouija board and some typos probably!
Ciel likes to watch the sky. He likes to watch how the clouds race to overtake each other, he likes to watch the sun dancing alone in its place, twirling its colorful skirt of orange, yellow and pink during the hours that pass until finally the moon takes its place.
Quiet moments like this now, where he just sits in his armchair, his work all done and Sebastian far away, is when he can think about the things he's lost. But also the ones he won. If Sebastian had any knowledge about such thoughts, Ciel would certainly be subjected to his jokes and mockery.
The demon, while bound by the contract, could still make fun of his little master and he knew exactly how to embarrass the young lord. But Sebastian didn't need to know how the boy thinks about his twin brother, his parents, the employees and his childhood friend, Y/n; If they were alive now they would be maybe thirteen or fourteen, just like him and his brother. It was a fateful day, indeed.
The murder, the cult, Ciel hates remembering it, but he doesn't know how to let it all go. He's a child and there's no one he can ask for help - even if there was, perhaps his pride wouldn't allow it. He didn't ask for help when he was kidnapped, he didn't ask for help when he went through countless assassination attempts, nor did he ask for help with difficult tasks that the queen assigned him. He was the Phantomhive heir, the family's leader, he couldn't just simply ask for help.
The count narrows his blue eyes at the brooding darkness that has settled in his office, counting how many grains of sand fall into the hourglass and how long he has left in peace before Sebastian shows up to annoy him.
Maybe fifteen minutes.
With enough time for the boy to put his small plan into action, he pulled a wooden board from one of the drawers and placed it on the table. Ciel, by and large, was not superstitious, but recent events had left him puzzled. Moreover, he had a demon as his butler, a boy with super strength as his gardener, a sniper as his maid, and a soldier as his cook. In any case, he had even encountered death gods.
Therefore, if he suspected that the presence lingering over his shoulders while he worked or the entity hiding his items and making them appear in different places was something to be investigated, then he would investigate until his doubts were cleared. The giggles and whispers were becoming unsettling. Of course, he heard voices, but they were the voices of occultists, screams and cries from when they died at the hands of Sebastian.
But this particular voice was incredibly irritating and almost familiar.
Ciel scanned the wooden surface, wondering if he was a fool for buying it. The boy was almost certain that Sebastian knew about the board, but he decided not to comment; the butler had been rather distant since they returned from London that morning. Ciel didn't mind, quickly reading the rules and holding the pointer in his hands, trying to see something through it.
There was nothing… yet.
Ciel laid the pointer on the board and sighed, placing his fingers on it, ready to start. He hadn't said anything yet, but an aura already seemed to completely envelop his office. Or maybe he was anxious; he couldn't tell.
"Is there anyone there?" Ciel murmured, his firm voice echoing in the silent room.
For several moments, nothing happened. He really didn't expect anything to happen, judging this whole thing as something foolish that only became popular because of the horror stories that circulated in cities. He stared at the board intently, each letter in cursive, every mystical symbol adorning it, waiting for a response that would satisfy him. Impatiently, he repeated the question once more.
"Is there anyone there?" He looked at the pointer and then around. "If there is, give me a sign."
This time, the pointer began to move slowly across the board as if the entity on the other side was drowsy, gliding from one letter to another with a calmness that Ciel himself didn't possess. Ciel watched with intensity, his expression impassive. But inside, a strange feeling took hold of him.
It was real, after all. As real as shinigamis or Sebastian. He stifled another sigh in his throat.
"Who is there?" He asked, the words leaving his lips with determination.
Who behind the veil was tormenting him, holding on to him tightly so as not to be pulled into the forgetfulness of eternal sleep. He put more force on the pointer as if everything depended on the answer he would receive.
The letters came together to form words, and Ciel remained focused, but a hint of skepticism was present in his gaze when the words spelled out a name. Your first and last name.
"Y/N?" He wondered aloud.
Ciel may have lost a lot, but he also gained a lot. He gained another family, gained new friends allies, gained a new chance.
And yet… He hadn't gained you back. Or had he?
For a second, he let the pointer rest on the board, feeling a heavy sensation settle in his chest as he thought about the days when you used to stay by his side when he was bedridden with asthma, telling him your silly stories and jokes, all while holding his hand and looking tenderly at him. You were his best friend. And he missed you a lot.
And now you were here. You were here.
He placed his finger on the pointer again, still feeling doubtful if it was really you or some other spirit. Confidently, he asked something that only you knew. "What was the nickname that only you called me, and why?"
The nickname you used for him when it was just the two of you. Not for his brother, not for Ciel. If it was really you there, you would notice the small differences, as you did when you were alive.
The pointer moved, taking with each movement a beat of the young earl's heart. One by one, the letters formed a nickname forgotten by time and bitter memories of the only Phantomhive still wandering through this tedious world.
"Pleiades, that's what I used to call you." There was a pause, and Ciel felt his entire body trembling with the confirmation that yes, it was you on the other side. He straightened up in his chair, trying to show that he was calm — little did he know that you could perceive how surprised he was.
And you would tease him about it later.
"Just like your hair, they are blue, an optical phenomenon caused by the dispersion of light in the Earth's atmosphere." You explained, nodding as if he could see you. Ciel rolled his eyes but almost unconsciously smiled.
"I see you remain a know-it-all." He teased.
And you stuck your tongue out at him, moving your arms to make the chair he was sitting in slide backward. Ciel's cheeks immediately turned pink as a little yelp escaped his lips. He hadn't expected you to have more tricks up your sleeve, but soon he regained his composure and cleared his throat, watching you move the pointer.
"One of us has to be clever," You chuckled. "Obviously, I'm the smart friend."
Ciel let out a long sigh. "Your knowledge is all random, though."
You shrugged. What importance did any kind of knowledge have now that you were dead? You said nothing for a few minutes, running your fingers over the wood of the board and the supposedly mystical symbols. Being dead was boring, different for everyone, and you weren't even sure how your soul managed to escape the shinigamis for so long.
But you had one certainty; you were stuck in this world for some reason still. In many stories, there would be an unfulfilled desire or a want, and you had several, but you had made peace with the fact that you could no longer fulfill them. So what was still keeping you there?
"Hey, can I ask you something?"
Ciel nodded, gesturing with his hand for you to continue.
"Can you free me? Can you invite me out?"
Ciel had already broken some rules, especially the one that said he couldn't play alone and that the player should have a form of spiritual protection, whatever they had faith in — a crucifix, a talisman, anything. Ciel, however, had a mark on his eye, so you assumed that nullified this rule. Did that thing serve as a protective mark, though?
The boy remained silent for some time, seemingly weighing the pros and cons of taking such action. To bind a spirit to himself, to the world of the living, when he knew he should let you rest in peace, when he knew such agreements were dangerous.
But he was still the selfish earl who liked to monopolize your time; he was still that same sickly boy who needed a friend. And no one else could be his friend but you. Only you understood him, after all.
He nodded.
It was foolishness, but not even Sebastian could have stopped him. He pressed the pointer harder, desperate for it to work, but of course, it would work if you were already in front of him, the dead proof that there could be life in death.
"I invite you, Y/n, to leave this board."
A warm feeling flooded your chest, as if your skin were kissed by the sun again after so long. You savored it for a moment, smiling, feeling strangely more alive than before, and withdrew your hand from the pointer.
"Can you see me?" You asked, your voice hoarse from not speaking for months.
But Ciel didn't seem to understand, not yet at least. So you touched his cheek as you did when congratulating him on a chess victory, and he felt it, his eyes widening as he assimilated the situation. You figured that now that you touched him, he could hear you, so you asked the question again.
And slowly, he nodded. You could only imagine what he thought of your bloodstained shirt and disheveled appearance, so different from the one you once proudly preserved. Times change, and so do you, and you were like this now, a lost ghost that not even death seemed to want.
You smiled, squeezing both of his cheeks and watching him shudder. It was good to see him, good to be back, even if nothing would be the same. Nothing could ever be the same again, but being able to touch him again after so long, you didn't hesitate to hug him.
You were together again.

Invisible String (Sebastian x OC) Part 1: Prologue I
link to next part
tags: not beta read, Non-Traditional Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, like demon ranking stuff, Demon Deals, demon biology, Mentions of Myth & Folklore, Family Feels, Platonic Relationships, Eventual Smut, Eventual Romance, Song: invisible string (Taylor Swift), Cross-Posted on AO3, eventually part of a collection
characters: Sebastian Michaelis, Original female character
Summary:
-One single thread of gold tied me to you-
Demons, angels, and grim reapers roam the streets of London in the latter half of the 18th century. Adelaide DuPont knows that whatever killed her parents was not human. Someone, or something, killed them and left no trace. Adelaide and her brother, Luca, are left almost desolate. Their only hope is to get the Earl of Phantomhive on their side as an investor in their parents' company. Sebastian Michaelis is a leashed demon. However, that does not stop him from smelling his mate. He will not let the fate of humans in this world take her away from him. He can balance two goals at once. He can care for his master and convince his mate to return to the pits of Hell with him.
Every faith in history holds some shred of truth. No one faith holds all the answers to the way of the world. No one being that exists on the mortal plane can answer all questions. No piece of folklore is entirely true. Many creatures exist, from the yokai of Japan to the Selkie of Europe. Many wives' tales are also true. Our story is based on a few shreds of folklore and faith. Demons, angels, and grim reapers roam the streets of London in the latter half of the 18th century. Within these streets, one earldom houses many strange people and… entities.
Ciel Phantomhive, a dark-haired young man with fair skin, houses a rather odd band of servants. Mey-Rin, an outwardly bumbling and clumsy maid with maroon hair and wide glasses, has extreme farsightedness. She has an impeccable vision for seeing afar and is an invaluable sniper. Baldroy, a former soldier with dirty blond hair and lightly tanned skin, is a very headstrong man. He is stubborn and determined to prove himself, but he could be a better cook since he is a chef. Finnian, a walking ray of sunshine with equally sunny hair and freckles, is abnormally strong. Having previously been an experiment subject, he is not used to his strength and breaks objects easily. Tanaka, a butler from Ciel Phantomhive’s younger childhood of Asian descent, does not provide much in the form of serving. And finally, there is the “leader” of the servants. Ciel Phantomhive’s personal butler, Sebastian, is not human. He blends into the human servants well, given that they are all so peculiar. Their own non-human characteristics may help them ignore the russet red eyes and sharp fangs that protrude from his lips. The dark hair on his head matches the dark color of his nails and contrasts his inhuman pale skin.
As we take a peek into their lives, we may observe the servants preparing for guests. The non-human butler cleans up the messes the bumbling staff make as they lay out provisions for these guests. He glances around at all of the staff, taking note of the auras that glow around them. Mey-Rin and Bard glowed with bright red energy, Finny glowed a brilliant yellow, and Tanaka a soft blue. He watched as his young master came down the stairs, speaking in that too-grown-up tone that masked the young boy inside, as he glowed in muted colors that were filtered by his blocked energy. The servants, including our demonic butler, all bowed to their master.
“Where are our guests, Sebastian?” the young master asked.
“They should be arriving any minute, my young lord,” the butler answered. As if on cue, a knock resounds on the door. Mey-Rin scrambles to open the door for the guests. On the doorstep stood a young woman with light skin like fine porcelain. Her cheeks were hollowed and her emerald green eyes were dull and sunken. She wore a dress of cheap blue material that highlighted her strawberry blonde hair. Next to her stood a boy with matching hair and eyes who wore a suit of the same material. His figure was much healthier than that of the young lady, though.
Sebastian took stock of the pair. The boy’s aura glowed a vibrant indigo, but he oozed introversion and anxiety. The female’s aura was a dull, almost black shade of grey. It was a dulled shade of white, a very rare aura color. He looked her up and down when he noticed a shimmer of gold near her hand as she curtsied to the master of the house. He did not hear her words, however, as his ears rang and hummed with his pulse. His heart raced as he took a deep breath, smelling the most alluring scent of discontent mixed with florals and musk. His eyes traced the thread as it flowed into the manor. His mind raced as he saw the thread reach him and go around his neck, tying and binding him to the thing human female standing before him. His face briefly showed his shock before he masked it in a smile.
His master, the owner of the contract binding him to the mortal plane, spoke to him, “Sebastian, show Ms. DuPont and Mr. DuPont to their seats. We will dine and then discuss business,” he said sternly. His visible eye glowered at him, noticing his flustered state.
Sebastian’s heart raced in his chest, thumping rapidly with excitement. The need to claim his bondmate was strong in his veins.
“Of course, my lord,” the demon said. He glanced up at the siblings, “Please follow me, my lord and lady.”
He led them to the dining room, desperately trying to ignore the scent that was filling his nose. The scent of his mate. The one who held the thread of his fate.

A Review: Black Butler Vol. 1
Author: Yana Toboso Illustrator: Yana Toboso Publishers: Yen Press Age Group: Older Teen Genre: Shonen, Josei, Dark Fantasy, Occult Type: Manga
Content Warnings: Violence, Demons
Spoilers ahead
Plot
Just a stone’s throw from London lies the manor house of the illustrious Phantomhive earldom and its master, one Ciel Phantomhive. Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce e, Queen Victoria’s faithful servant…and a slip of a twelve-year-old boy. Fortunately, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young master’s wishes. And whether Sebastian is called to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of London’s underbelly, there is apparently nothing Sebastian cannot do. In fact, one might even say that Sebastian is too good to be true…or at least, too good to be human…
Character Development
Ciel Phantomhive is an overly serious twelve-year-old in charge of a vast toy and sweets commerce empire. Not only that, but he’s the guard dog to England’s underbelly. If the Queen needs a problem fixed, he’s there. He enjoys games, but won’t allow anyone to outwit him. He cannot afford it. Having lost his family and home once already, he’ll do anything to get revenge.
Sebastian Michaelis is one hell of a butler (kudos to A-1 pictures for that line). He doesn’t complain…not outwardly anyways. He’s good at everything including throwing forks and knives at enemies, fighting Reapers, and gathering information in the blink of an eye. He’s also a demon in service to Ciel until Ciel’s revenge is accomplished.
There are a variety of other kooky characters surrounding Ciel that makes the story interesting. Everyone from his sniper maid, Mey-Rin, to his tea enthusiast butler, Tanaka. Did I mention the Reapers and his fiance, Elizabeth? Each have their roles to play in Ciel’s life but also add color to the world around him.
World-building
Victorian England is our setting with the occult mixed in like it’s always been there. The illustrations work fabulously to bring that air of sophistication and backdrop color to the world. The outfits and speech stylings create the world around the audience.
Themes
Always trust your butler (unless you’re playing Clue).
Observations & Predictions
While I’ve seen the TV series, my hope is to get context on when everything happens as the series doesn’t put most of the storylines in order.
I hope to see more of Ciel’s personality and how he handles his trauma. The banter between Sebastian and Ciel is not to be underestimated as well. I hope to see more of Elizabeth growing out of her “everything must be cute” phase so she can Ciel can start a truly deep connection.
And of course, I want to see Sebastian beat the shit out of everything that comes at Ciel.

Once all the little group were fully into the study, and Frances herself had darted back to in fact close the door herself for the sake of everyone's all-around desire for privacy during such a meeting, the earl and countess settled into their usual seats. And, for once, the butler and maid too were situated into a seating on the couch near by; clinging to each other still as they constantly kept eyes on one another as well as the marchioness.
But then Astre finally broke the tense silence.
"How long," he practically hissed through his teeth, looking up almost fearfully at his aunt, "have you known Sebastian is a demon, Aunt Frances?"
The Marchioness didn't respond right away, though she did cross her arms tightly and shut her eyes.
She let out a loud, long sigh, as if she'd been holding that in for years.
"As you know very well by now, Nephew, your father- my brother -took on his new title as Watchdog of the Underworld almost too merrily. Gladly delving down that dark path, his taste and desire for adventure and thrills unmatched, and no matter what kinds of adventures and thrills awaited him, he carried on with head held high.. until... the very end, it seemed."
She'd petered off as she'd slowly opened her eyes, only to just stare on down at the rug before her, though her face belied she was definitely somewhere else. Some other time.
"And while doing so, made curious allies and brought forth strange and unusual facts and encounters.. Some including but not limited to our own family's bloodline.. Which you also by now know.. after everything..."
Undertaker
Was on the air from all parties, and the young earl's narrowed suspicious eye widened, shimmering in the dimness as he looked on expectantly at his aunt for more of this.
"Not long after, as my brother and I grew into our separate roles, went- in a sense -our separate ways, even stranger cases came forth under the guidance of the Queen for my brother, some most definitely involving things such as demonic forces. Demon cults. Demon worship. Sacrifices. Possession-"
"How did you get wrapped up in all that, though, Aunt??"
Astre had suddenly snapped out, as if purposely to stop his aunt from continuing down that line of explanation in particular.
And, of course, this reaction lead to the older woman staring the young man down.
Knowingly.
...
Until her features softened drastically out of the blue.
And her crossed arms fell away to her sides, as she openly sighed.
Frances could look no longer then at the boy she knew damn well was in a contract with this demon just a few feet away, sitting among them.
Nor the maid that kept her hands firmly clasping his, her shoulder pressed into him. Her piercing sniper's gaze staying on the Marchioness without falter this whole meeting.
"I didn't," Frances finally answered, at first quietly and defeated
But then she finally looked back at Astre.
"I never dared to get directly involved in a mission. It was not my place, and I knew that well."
Her tone said much different.
"...However, that didn't mean I never looked into things by my own means."
Once again her arms lifted, but more to hug herself than to cross themselves over her front.
"Researching... studying... Many nights I'd spend after your father had tucked away to bed.. up wide awake, reading the most strange and unusual of tomes about demons and spirits and other such inhuman beasts..."
"Why?" Astre asked, unable to resist his reaction, and what he assumed was the everyone who knew Frances Midford in this room's question.
""Why"?" Frances parroted, voice rapidly becoming borderline laughter at such a question, "Why would I go to the trouble to bother researching these things my brother, my dear only sibling, had to deal with on a monthly basis? Or perhaps.. Why couldn't I ignore it and carry on, acting as if I never caught sight of his face's grim transformation after finishing a mission, staring down at graves of those he could not save or staring hard at the newspaper headlines the next morning, recounting what everyone thought transpired when he was there on that very night..."
Another laugh, weak and shaking escaped the woman, and she turned away from everyone. Turned, and faced the warm, bright blaze of the study's fireplace.
"You know exactly why, Astre. As I'm sure, at one point, far into the past... Ciel knew as well."
Frances smiled. But it was certainly not a warm smile.
"We are siblings. Brothers and sisters. Twins. Family. Bound. By blood."
She took a breath, and closed her eyes.
"And I was going to be ready, whatever it took, to help... if need be.. If it came down to it..."
She whirled back to face her nephew and lifted her chin as a brief moment of stirred-up pride and determination came forth.
"Even in the most hellish of situations imaginable."
Astre's equally grim expression remained; mouth stuck in a thin line, but he visibly swallowed, and nodded a tiny bit in understanding and... well, agreement.
"And you used that knowledge you'd gained from all those years of studying to come to that conclusion of what Sebastian was."
Astre finished for her, but certainly wasn't finished with his questioning.
"Though you chose, for some reason, never to call Sebastian out on this.. Nor me, for that matter.... Why?"
Frances huffed another humorless laugh, and lifted a brow at the young man.
"Would you ever call a demon of Hell out on their ruse and try to stop them? Despite being in fact the one in a contract yourself, surely you can imagine it is.. difficult for any outside parties, other humans, to simply go up to a demon, and even just.. say anything that might give them awareness that one outside influence knows of their ruse. It could cause so much more trouble than the human bargained for. It could cause a chain effect.. and lead to the undoing of the very human they are trying to free from that demons grasp."
...
Astre merely smiled bitterly.
"And yet... here we are, Aunt."
Immediately Frances shook her head.
"Oh no, do not assume I plan to try anything other than what I've managed thus far, Nephew. I said my piece, did what I had to to make a point, and now I merely hope it and my words are enough... of a warning."
Frances then locked gazes with Sebastian once more, and once again the air grew tense, even in the cozy warm little study they'd relocated too.
"Despite all your surprisingly diligent years of service to my remaining nephew thus far... "butler","
Frances started, making sure now to lay on her disdain extra thick when saying that title in regards to him.
"This news of a baby, that I have just now been informed of, has crossed the line entirely. And... not only because of it being a butler and a maid, not only because it is a demon and a human, but mainly because you've foolishly decided to do such a thing.. before you've even MARRIED her- And I do not care if you were planning for marriage beforehand, it is THE PRINCIPLE of the thing. This type of disregard is the HEIGHT of taboo, as you SHOULD damn well know-"
"M-My Lady, th-that's enough, it is!" Mey was snapping out again, and not stopping just there, her face rapidly growing as red as the Marchioness' had in the small time she'd stood there carrying on in her tangent.
Mey's arms tightened around Sebastian, and she even unconsciously leaned her smaller form even more into her love, till her form was threatening to almost be on top of his while on the couch.
"We.. We both know very well.. very much how screwy this is, we do!! We.. we know for certain the.. babies were likely made the night of young master and lady Elizabeth's wedding, when we got to celebrate below stairs, and so.. we had some sherry.. both of us, and well.. What happened happened, so.. It ain't just Sebastian's fault, no matter what everyone says, no it isn't, and e-even then.. I'd never ever blame him for makin' me pregnant, no I wouldn't. Because becomin' a mum has always been a thing I've wanted.. eventually.. in me life, whether I'd still be a maid at that point or not, is uh.. it don't matter, no it don't! the point is... I am marryin' Sebastian. I was plannin' to before then. I was the one t'ask him for marriage in the first place! So.. what I'm sayin' is.. We've never needed your approval, Lady Frances. And we sure as hell don't need it now."
And then, Mey Rin sat back into the couch, as if finally allowing herself to breathe after that.
Which she did openly; letting out a loud sigh, ad letting her eyes flutter shut for a few seconds.
And meanwhile in those few seconds everyone stared on at the maid..
The earl and his wife with shock, Alexis and Frances herself with open surprise, and the butler- who had to try his damnedest not to start purring right then and there and wrap her tight in both his arms -with pure adoration and love.
[ confess ] With Sebamey (because I also feel like trying to write Mey Mey for once~) "Se-Sebastian.. I.. I h-have somethin' I really wanna tell you." The maid squeaked out, hands grabbing the ends of her maid skirt and squeezing as she stood on the spot, trembling. "I-I.. I-I think I.. I m-m-might l-l... l-li... " She covered her eyes with both hands then. "IthinkI'minlovewithyou!!" And then instinct made the girl try to run.
Well. Sebastian was very much aware that Mey Rin fancied him, but he’d hardly expected a full-blown confession. To his chagrin, the demon realized it made him feel different than previous declarations of “love” from idiotic mortals. He knew how to handle lust and selfish greed. The depravities humans committed for the sake of a conventionally attractive physique disgusted him. But the shy, adoring look Mey Rin had given as she stared up at him wasn’t tainted by such lowly appetites. It was intriguing (though he sensed that that didn’t fully describe the peculiar excitement coursing through him). The demon’s hand shot out and grabbed her by the wrist.
“A moment, Mey Rin. Did you say just now that you were in love with me?”

i started rereading black butler again!! i was looking at the tags abt baldroy's past, tho i think some takes on how natives were also awful need to be handled with a bit more light in order to provide context to the time period.
dont forget that the native americans were colonized, their culture and rights to their own homeland forcibly revoked from white colonizers. it didn't matter how benevolent other white farmers were to the native americans, the trauma of losing your right to live by your own life will never be cured by the exception. the native americans were expected to live by colonial ideals and traditions, standards that were completely unfair and non beneficial to the marginalized community. with how their people has been exploited for hundreds of years, in various degrees of crimes against humanity, why wouldn't they react violently?
the violence between natives and colonizers brought a shitload of casualties on both sides. losses were prominent on both sides. there were unspeakable murders on both sides, and obviously baldroy was a victim of this war. again, keep in mind the period this was set in, and keep in mind how wars are mistakenly "educated" to the people as a simple black and white matter. baldroy, in his grief, blamed the entire native community.
i personally think that toboso clearly showed baldroy's dark side. the war against native americans will always be bad, and baldroy had willingly participated in the war and fed into his hate. it wasn't just natives he killed, it was anyone who came into his path that he deemed as a threat. his humanity was basically burned with every conflict he joined, and it didn't help that he always came out alive in every fight, while his fellow soldiers always died.
toboso showed how monstrous baldroy was as a soldier, it wasn't meant to only fully sympathize with him; it showed a very flawed person in a traumatized individual. and while baldroy will never forgive those who killed his family, he grew to understand why they did. he started to recognize his white privilege was at the native americans' own expense, and that war wasn't as simple as he thought. again, he still couldn't forgive those who killed his wife and child, and that's obviously valid.
in meeting sebastian, baldroy was forced to grow out of his small bubble. the latter still thought the responsibility of cooking and cleaning was merely a woman's job, and sebastian had to call him out for his (ironic for the time period) outdated notion.
it's heavily implied that baldroy had a background of carrying a very backwards view of gender roles and racism. he's what you'd expect of a white american in his time period. however, with his admittance to the phantomhive household coupled with his post war guilt, his beliefs and "traditions" were constantly challenged.
you've got an asian maid whos clumsy as shit, but the best sniper with an owl-like vision he knows. you've got a teenager of a gardener who accidentally destroys plants, but is the best shield and brute force of all servants. then theres the japanese ex butler who's served the phantomhive family at every angle, and even the current butler (although not known hes a demon) who does EVERYTHING what both men and women are expected to do. sebastian especially is seen as a super progressive adult man of their period.
tldr i love baldroy bc u get to explore his very flawed character, and sebastian that practically bullied progressiveness into baldroy by going "i can change him", AND HE FUCKING DID.

The Phantomhive Household: Mey-rin
I haven’t professed my love for Mey-rin. The maid fascinated me ever since I saw her in the anime’s season 1 shedding her demure goofy appearance only to appear so BAMF toting guns in both hands shooting the Earl’s enemies. And in turn, her fascination with Sebastian is terribly understandable. She’s us, the audience (well many of us, I just realised lately that some people really do hate him even though he is the titular character), who desire the talented evil butler.
And because I ship everyone with almost everybody in “Kuroshitsuji” and Sebastian is a demon, who doesn’t mind being entangled with humans he sets his eyes upon according to his needs and purposes, he’s honest to goodness impressed with her whenever she meets his expectations and more.
Look at how flustered she is after she’s received a praise from Sebastian. Not only she finds home in the Phantomhive household, she’s found her usefulness and her superiors thoroughly appreciate it.
A few head canons:
• Sebastian might appear he’s had enough of the domestic helpers’ peccadilloes but at the end of the day I don’t think he minds it.
• When Mey-rin used to have a problem making the ribbon behind her uniform straight, Sebastian would have sneaked in, standing very close to her, tsk-tsked over her clumsiness, and finally arranged it for her making her more red-faced. And come to think of it, aroused, which at first bothered her, but the second time it happened, she enjoyed it.
• Sebastian from time to time loves to tease her. And so Mey-rin is puzzled by this. She is wishing, nay, hoping that the butler means it. Does he really care for her? No wonder, during the “Book of Murder OVA/The Phantomhive Manor Murders arc” she quipped, “Mister Sebastian, are you worried about me? Are you?” After the preceding scenes/panels where Lord Siemens tried to assault her and she lamented that she wouldn’t be able to get married. Poor maid.
• Does she ever think of her lost homeland? I think she does. Hong Kong, the only place she knew. She still knows how to write Chinese unbeknownst to the rest of the Phantomhive household members. And she keeps a diary of sorts in her room where she writes in her fluid mother tongue. She thinks of her dead parents. Both Irish who left their country and settled in Hong Kong only to find themselves going back to Europe and being victims of the epidemic. She used to have an Amah who taught her Cantonese and told her about Chinese folklores. That’s why it makes her happy to relay the traditions she still remembers to her colleagues (Chapter 120, The Butler, Lyrical)
• It is strange but she feels more secure in the Phantomhive household. Yes, she is now the resident sniper. Yes, she still has nightmares of her deceased friends, but with the company of her newfound friends and the handsome butler and her young Lord, she’s found a purpose and a will to live. Though sometimes, it disappoints her when her seniors don’t care at all. At least, Finnian understands.
• She might find the tailor Nina Hopkins intimidating (but hey, not that often might be enough), but give her more of these women rather than those men like Lord Siemens.
• The day she mustered the courage to ask the Butler to spend a day with her in London for her birthday, Sebastian, in kind, surprised her with a ballroom ticket, a red ball gown, and they danced the night away capping the end of her birthday and it was the best day she ever had.
• She’s jealous of the Young Master. (Mainly because the Butler is devoted to him. And they are very close.) Full stop. But that doesn’t mean she despises him. Sometimes, she has the sisterly feeling for him and she cannot help it.

It goes without saying....
Sebastian says this sort of thing quite frequently, and until recently, I thought he was just showing off because he’s a demon.
However, now I think it’s merely a slight exaggeration (because he’s a demon)... and the Phantomhive family has long been an employer of highly skilled private soldiers. Particularly the highest servant positions, like Head Steward, the butlers, and possibly even the Housekeeper and the lady’s maid. Others, too, like someone in gardening, the coachman, etc. Anyone who is likely to be around when there is an attack should have at least some basic training, and a few positions are likely to require more combat training. Because of what the Phantomhives do.
We know Tanaka is a skilled fighter, and I cannot imagine him being the only one from Vincent’s days who would have been useful in combat.
Even though Bard, Finny, and Mey-Rin are not very good at the cover positions they have been given, they are useful as protectors of the manor. But they all have particularly odd backgrounds. Sebastian and our earl found Finny at a research facility; he has “absurd strength”, as Sebastian puts it, and he doesn’t always think too clearly, so it’s really brute strength that can get out of hand. Mey-Rin showed up with her owl-like long-distance vision, already skilled as a sniper. Sebastian found Bard on a battlefield, probably on US soil, and he’s an explosives expert. They have become professionals at what they really do, and Sebastian and our earl have made a point of it, at least to Joker.
Tanaka has been working for the Phantomhive family since Vincent was a kid. I think previous discussions I’ve had with other bloggers place him joining the Phantomhive household around 1854 or 1855. It would make (some) sense with Japanese politics at the time. He might not have been the House Steward at first, but he definitely was by the time Vincent died. We see that when he describes what the Phantomhive household was like when it was fully staffed.
So, at least a few of these people had to have been skilled at some sort of combat, not just Tanaka, who seems to favor swords, particularly the katana. In those previous discussions with other bloggers, we sort of came to the conclusion that Tanaka must have been one of the last true samurai, or better yet a rōnin, and that he left Japan while the borders were open... to get away from the turmoil in Japan at the time... while hoping or choosing to serve a new master.
It would make sense for Tanaka to train new staff in combat techniques that he knows. Recall that Vincent is “good with knives” — not just hog-tying — so he might have taught some combat skills, too.
So, when we see these (mostly) smiling faces...
...we need to consider that at least a few of them (not just Tanaka) are also highly trained killers. Another requirement for working for a family like the Phantomhives? Loyalty. Unlike Jane’s contract at Heathfield’s manor, these servants would likely have to swear an oath of loyalty. Because of what the Phantomhives do.
Imagine what would happen if one of these loyal, devoted servants (say a butler)...
...died the day of the attack, but their body wasn’t destroyed by the fire?
Imagine how little work it would take for Undertaker to use this person’s own goals (to serve and protect the Phantomhive family) to extend their cinematic records.
The resulting bizarre doll would have a demented sense of loyalty, bordering on religious zeal, to protecting and preserving the heir of Vincent Phantomhive...
**cough cough Polaris cough**

Kuro 161 Summary & Thoughts
その執事、執拗: 狩るか、飼うか? That Butler, Tenacious: To hunt or to keep?
In the previous chapter (160) we see what Rin had been trained for at last; big target assassinations. She failed at her mission and made Sebastian spill the tea. But now chapter 161 will spill... even more tea.
“Failure of a mission means death, there is no time to think, I gotta run,” Rin reasons and runs for her miserable life. It is but a simple phrase, but it adequately sums up the ways of the underground society she belongs to.
Back in the Phantomhive manor O!Ciel is understandably distraught. Sebastian however seems too amused to be bothered by such an assault on his master even though he only narrowly managed to prevent it seconds ago. I do not blame Sebastian for his peculiar priorities however.
As he claims, he cannot sense the presence of humans within the possible range of shooting, nor were his demon ears able to hear the sound of the trigger being pulled. So who or what could possibly have been able to handle a rifle and aim for his master’s little head with such astonishing accuracy and skill? Quite impressive indeed. As discussed previously in S&S Kuro 158, Rin did indeed turn out to impress Sebastian enough to spare her life.
However amused, the butler’s duty never ends. Hastily Sebastian washes and dresses his master with such astonishing speed, I bet even the dirt on the boy’s body had not noticed they were made to leave.
Without further ado Sebastian excuses himself, and the hunt is on!
Within all normal common sense, Rin believes to have secured enough distance between herself and the Phantomhive manor to be in safety. Despite her logical judgement however, she cannot help but be overcome by paranoia and check her surroundings. This shows just how much knowledge and fear Rin has gotten in her during her profession as assassin.
Then, almost like in a Looney Toons series, a figure bolting from afar leaving a train of dust and smoke behind itself approaches. The figure’s steps leave a loud train of ‘doh doh doh doh...” sounds like an overly aggressive rain dance performed by a seagullzilla. Surely the unsuspecting worms underneath the ground would at least pop out their heads to check what kind of weather would be responsible for this monstrous rainfall.
Seagullzilla’s face is now in sight, and Rin identifies it to be the butler of the household. She is shocked, but allowing the shock to sink in is a luxury that she does not have on her hands, so she decides to finish her pursuer and takes aim.
With great ease and a smile on his face, Sebastian dodges all the bullets headed for him. We know that the demon is very confident about his speed, and now even more so that he estimated to have enough time to first wash and dress his master, seat him at a table, and still be able to catch the assassin. This is yet another reminder of how terrifying our Trash Demon™ is, and that if anyone were to try escape him, they would merely have a snowflake’s chance in Hell.
Only a second ago, Sebastian was still so far away from Rin that she could take immaculate aim for the target’s vitals. Rin probably only had the time to blink, and suddenly the butler has already appeared right in front of her with apparent murderous intent.
Murderous intent indeed, but it was not her life the butler was after, but the man named Pigeon behind her who was about to silence Rin for her failure.
Again Rin does not get the time to ponder about the meaning of all that had happened, and she is already engulfed by Sebastian’s black miasma. “At last we meet.”
“Young master, pardon my insolence, but I have caught you an owl.” Sebastian has brought his prey in really not unlike a tied animal. Rin is pinned against the floor with only her hands tied back. Presumably, even Rin knew why her captor did not bother tying her feet, as any attempt to flee would prove to be moot.
“Haku of the Qing Syndicate keeps an incredibly skilled sniper named ‘Owl’ who is after my life...... it appears that this intel was correct,” the young Earl says. This catches Rin’s immediate attention and she makes the educated guess that there must be a traitor within the Syndicate. “K-kill me! Torturing me will only make your floor dirty!” Rin quickly pleads.
“Torture? Oh I will do no such inefficient thing,” Sebastian scoffs with a ridiculing smile. As it appears, the demon disagrees and looks down on torture. As discussed in this post and this post, Sebastian is indeed not unnecessarily ‘actively’ cruel; he simply does not care about the well-being of anyone he is not interested in. Or in the least, Sebastian is not cruel in a physical way (when it comes to psychological torment though, his cruelty is without peers, of course).
It is very interesting to see how the image of demons most people have is that they would resort to cruel behaviours like impaling or skinning people alive. To Sebastian who 1. is only interested in the soul of a human rather than their flesh, and 2. does not have a physical body of his own but is simply an embodiment of his mind, naturally psychological torture is so much more meaningful.
Though not entirely related to the current chapter, this bit does give a nice little insight of Sebastian’s personality. Thought for later!
Returning to the main case; clearly somebody with accurate information had informed O!Ciel of ‘Owl’s’ existence and the Qing Syndicate’s agenda. Who is this ‘traitor’? The first person to pop up in my mind was Lau, but is this instinct correct? Not very likely, but not impossible. It also entirely depends on whether Lau already knew O!Ciel or not.
Previously in chapter 159, Sebastian delivered a letter from his master’s “dearest”. Was this letter just another one of Queen Victoria’s to send her Watchdog on a mission? Or was this the letter sent by “the traitor”? Judging from the way the letter is wax-sealed, it seems more likely the sender is a person of acknowledged social standing, so the probability of a mafia member to have sent this is somewhat lower. Still, this does not rule the possibility out entirely.
Again, this is material for future speculation and revelation.
After Sebastian makes clear that he will not do anything like torture, he instead proposes something rather outlandish. His proposal is something readers like you and I have known for at least 14 years (waow...this manga is 14 years old now...), but to O!Ciel and Rin, it is something beyond their wildest expectations. “Instead, won’t you come work for the Phantomhive family?”
“What do you mean, Sebastian!?” The boy protests. “I meant my words in a literal sense,” the butler replies. “To speak entirely honestly, we have a severe staff shortage in this household. We just had to be employed be a bizarre master who just seems hell-bent on not employing new servants. If what occurred today were to happen again, Finny would simply not be equipped to handle the situation. Owl’s eyes seem to be especially efficient for far distances, they could prove to be effective in keeping watch in security.”
The young master does not seem to be convinced, and understandably so because the candidate the butler has his eyes on had indeed just made an attempt to murder him.
Sebastian assures his master that there is no need for worry as the assassination attempt has failed. He explains that failure in the underground society is not ever met with toleration. Once someone fails, they shall only be chased to the end of the world and live a life of a fugitive. Rather than being a fugitive for the foreseeable future, Sebastian proposes to Owl that starting a new life as a servant to the household would be a win-win situation for the both of them.
“Besides, Young Master, did you not say you wanted one maid in appearance alone before?”
“A maid?” the young Earl repeats in puzzlement. “Indeed. “Owl” is... from a human biological point of view, a woman.”
For many years Rin has lived as a man to protect herself from danger. The 19th century was especially unfair to person viewed as women, indeed. Though the butler exposed her secrets in an unacceptable manner, could it be that this also liberated her from having to live hiding true self from the world?
Regardless, I bet that in the next chapter, we shall find out whether Rin views this ‘exposure’ only as sexual harassment and undue exposure, or whether there is also a sense of relief mixed within.

what if like meyrin and sebas switched personalities. he was shy and klutzy she is confident and smooth. ;)
This is such a cool idea, I LOVE scenarios like this!! 😍😍😍 I headcanon that Sebastian had no control over whether HE in particular was summoned or not, it was like a luck of the draw thing, instead of the cult having a specific demon in mind like I assume they really did in canon (They had a name for the demon and all when they summoned him, so they knew SOMETHING..) So usually Sebastian tries going for quick easy meals, which is sometimes hard and sometimes easy, it’s really up to what he finds when summoned!
In this case, he discovers a child master awaiting him, and immediately assumes this will definitely be an easy and quick job!
...Little does he know this child wants to find the real people somewhere out there who did all this, having such a big urge for REVENGE that he wants to tear down everyone in his path!
Oh, and by the way, he has to take on the role as a secret agent of the Queen of England, called the Queen’s Guard dog, and manage the underbelly of ALL of England, in his father’s- the former Guard Dog -stead!
Hooo BOY this is harder than the poor demon thought! He also needs to learn quickly how to be a butler and all the little things that come with THAT role.. cooking and cleaning, and greeting the Earl’s guests while trying to pretend he’s HUMAN...
Ugh, he is almost relieved when Tanaka is out of the hospital to help out, even though the old man doesn’t know much cooking. He and the boy insist they DO need more servants..
It just so happens the first they really gather is this strange boy in Germany who was also held captive and experimented on! And it turns out.. he’s really, REALLY strong and boy howdy do a lot of things in the manor get destroyed after a few days 🙈 But they really still try to teach him English and to be a gardener!
Then.. and assassin almost snipes the young master through a window, and the poor demon almost has a heart attack!! He runs after the sniper... and manages to catch her! But boy is this girl feisty...
Mey Rin stubbornly refuses to fully trust the butler and earl for the longest time, but well.. she does have to stay here now, or else the Chinese Mafia will come kill her! So... VERY RELUCTANTLY Mey Rin becomes the head maid of Phantomhive manor!
However she is definitely not gonna make this easy for this so-called Butler!
He tries to order her around like a butler should, and yet his heart isn’t in it and it’s so easy to tell with how he sweats and pleads with her to clean and polish and put things away..
The demon honestly regrets all of this entirely now.. not only is he stuck being a butler and taking care of a boy, but he also has to deal with a gorgeous human woman who has a confident air about her in her abilities as a sniper, but a temper when it comes to trying to get her to be a maid!
Oh, he wishes so much he, too, didn’t have to make her a maid.. to let her be the fierce and gorgeous killer she is meant to be...
Oh goodness, it’s so unseemly... a demon having a crush on a human!!
Sebastian really thinks he’s hit the lowest point now. He HAS to have..
That is... until the former soldier joins them, and the poor Earl Phantomhive has given up hope that he’ll ever have a good meal in his short sad life ever again. orz;;;

But don’t worry, by the time you’re done with this guide, you will no longer be pulling your hair out and instead, you’ll be embarking on the wondrous journey of claiming the titles you seek. Let’s begin!

Idk if you’re as familiar with the Witcher series as you are with black butler, but if you are,you might like this ask.
Imagine how much more infatuated Grelle and Sebastian would be if Mey-Rin was a witcher. She’d be able to hold her own against other supernatural beings, and she’d also be slightly more badass
Although I saw the first season of the Netflix adaptation and thoroughly enjoyed it, I’m not familiar with the lore—aren’t witchers magically-enhanced humans?
I’d have to respectfully disagree with you there. In my mind, part of the reason why Grelle and Seb fall so hard for Mey in fanon is because of her humanity. She’s a mere mortal, yet she outfoxed a demon and nearly slew his contractee. Merely mortal, but capable of standing her ground against a goddess (this is just my conjecture, but if both ladies were armed and fighting at maximum strength, I bet they could go toe-to-toe). Since neither Grelle nor Sebastian have encountered many humans like her, Mey Rin catches their attention. And her kindness, her sweetness, her sincerity…those are the qualities that would ultimately capture the hearts of reaper and devil alike. How could any being who spent decades or centuries without love or intimate attachments possibly resist her charm?
I’m sure they’d delight still further in the maid’s exploits if her power received a boost, but they’re already impressed with their girlfriend. After all, Mey Rin’s a deadly sniper and private soldier for one of Her Majesty’s most feared and notorious operatives within the British underworld. She’s pretty damn badass just the way she is! 🔥
