What does Nunnaly look for in a lover.?

A lover? Let’s see. I think that Nunnally has mutually excluding expectations for a lover (or for any romantic-leaning relationship she might develop). She’s looking for a man, who will be respectful and accepting for her need for freedom. She had always considered herself 'a bird in a gilded cage', so she is really looking for someone, who would be willing to open this cage for her. Let her fly alone, make her own decisions, and learn from her own mistakes.

But Nunnally has never had a healthy relationship in her life. She doesn’t know what it means to be in one. She has not had a chance to observe it as well. Her parents' marriage was an abusive one. Her father made sure she could not form any meaningful connection, and that he was the only person she could consider close.

So, as a result she misunderstands 'abuse' with 'affection'. One has to earn to be loved. As much as she dreams about unconditional love, she doesn't believe it exists. And she considers someone, who is open and straightforward, as rude and ill-mannered. That is why she tends to ignore red flags (she says she likes red).

Nunnally wants freedom, but she is also afraid of it. She wants to know that the door of the cage will always remain open, and whenever she is in trouble there will be someone else who would deal with the mess she made. She wants a man who will be there for her and only her. A strong one. And powerful enough so that she can continue to have a luxurious life she has.

And as much as Nunnally wants a change, she is not ready for a change, and was made believed she would not survive the change.

So, she needs a man who is manipulative enough to give her the illusion of getting all she wants…

…or a man that is patient enough to let her grow and accept that would be painfully slow process.
