BOOKS!

Books are cool. Reading is cool.

Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. I love books. I read a lot. But some stuck out. Here are the ones that came to my mind first.

The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien. Read it when I was twelve and then every year when I was dragged along on yet another lonely summer holiday with my parents. Until I started travelling on my own. I will never not love this book.

Die Leiden des jungen Werther – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. At the age of fourteen, the idea of dying of unrequited love seemed perfectly logical to me. It touched me deeply. I probably was the only one in my class though *lol*.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. That lanky, driven, addiction-ridden detective stirred something long before I ever heard of fanfiction…

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams. Virtually taught me how to treat life (if only I could live by my own standards). Don´t panic. Always know where your towel is. And of course, it provided me with THE answer. I strongly recommend “The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul”, too.

On the Road - Jack Kerouac.I thought myself very sophisticated reading beat literature.., I had just finished school and the first four months of adult freedom lay ahead. I wanted to do so many things (oh my, I was young…). Dind´t do that many drugs though.

No One Here Gets Out Alive – Jerry Hopkins/Daniel Sugerman. A Biography of Jim Morrison that brought me to Kant, Nietzsche, Aleister Crowley and Aldous Huxley. I´ll spare you the details.

Illuminatus – Robert Anton Wilson. If I wasn´t paranoid before, I was then.

House of God – Samuel Shem. My final exams were drawing near and I didn´t find the book funny. NOT ONE BIT.

The Hero with a thousand Faces – Joseph Campbell. As the subtitle says “a brilliant examination of man´s eternal struggle for identity”.

Last to die – Tess Gerritsen. One of the best crime fiction writers ever. Picked the most recent of her books, although all of them are good. Reminds me that I have still a long way to go if I want to follow my dreams…
