I got my first laptop in 2009 when I turned 15. It’s a late 2008 aluminum MacBook and praise the lord it still fucking works. But I had to fix it. I replaced the battery twice. I’ve replaced the charger at least 3 times. I replaced the speaker. I’ve upgraded the RAM twice and once was recent because I’d JUST found out my laptop can support 8 GB. Cannot thank iFixit enough!

Mac enthusiasts will tell you that past a certain point (it was either 2014 or 2015 MacBook) you can’t fix it up. Because Apple is hostile towards people who fix their computers at a cheaper price than they’re offering.

I was recently looking into getting a new laptop because out of the three I have, 1) MacBook is too old, 2) the Dell I have is rebooted with Linux Ubuntu so it doesn’t support all apps that Windows/MacOSX has, 3) old Chromebook is kinda useless now.

So naturally, as one does, I started looking at MacBooks. Just to see what these flashy new ones are like.

And I’m so mad because NONE of the new ones except the Studio desktop one had a USB port.

I freely admit I’m a bit behind on the times in terms of technology— I don’t go for what’s new and trendy, I go for what works and what I can afford. I literally got my first iPhone in 2021. I was a preteen when the first iPhone came out.

I USE usb ports. I NEED USB ports because my flash drives and external hard drives and devices USE USB PORTS and you’re telling me Apple decided we don’t NEED ports anymore!? Because they get a say in what tech innovation is???

Whatever they’re doing isn’t innovation for the sake of technology it’s sales advancement for the sake of profit. They package something shiny and new for you with the biggest inconveniences and try to assure you you’re doing the right thing. The new thing is good.

I ended up buying a refurbished 2016 Lenovo Thinkbook with like 16 GB RAM and 200+ GB for like $175 off Amazon. It runs Windows 10. Has touchscreen, thumb scanner, facial recognition. It’s beautiful. I love it.

My late 2008 MacBook can run old versions of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro I found online. Sure my laptop is slow sometimes, but I still use it more than my other laptops. My MacBook at this point is worth less than that Lenovo.

More expensive doesn’t mean it’s better alright? Don’t buy into the Apple hype because like ms-demeanor mentioned above, you can get equivalent parts at a better value.

What you need to look into when getting a laptop/computer and you’re just shopping around is 1) what do you need it for, which leads into 2) how much storage you want, 3) how much RAM you want for what you do, etc. Don’t ask me about gaming stuff because I’m not a gamer at all and I don’t know what good parts are for gamers.

And it’s overwhelming because there’s a lot of brands and computers out there! But to be real like, any Apple app out there, there’s a cheaper Windows equivalent too. Or an online one. A free one, perhaps. There’s a reason so many people love building PCs.

Am I a hypocrite for getting an iPhone? Well I wanted a new phone, I wanted to try an iPhone, and I wanted a phone with a good camera because I take a lot of pictures. And I like my iPhone 12. It was a learning curve since I’d been using Androids since 2012 but it’s alright. Will I buy another iPhone after this? Probably fuck no because this cost me $700 (paid off in like a year)!!!

tl;dr if you think Apple is superior then you’re new to tech and need to do more research into what YOU want out of a computer rather than what big brands tell you you want.

Since some people might want a Mac, I'll offer a Mac equivalent of your laptop guide from the perspective of a Mac/Linux person.

Even the cheapest Macs cost more than Windows laptops, but part of that is Apple not making anything for the low end of the tech spectrum. There is no equivalent Mac to an Intel i3 with 4 gigabytes of RAM. This makes it a lot easier to find the laptop you need.

That said, it is possible to buy the wrong Mac for you, and the wrong Mac for you is the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. Get literally anything else. If it has an M2 chip in it, it's the most recent model and will serve you well for several years. Any new MacBook Air is a good pick.

(You could wait for new Macs with M3, but I wouldn't bother. If you are reading these guides the M3 isn't going to do anything you need done that a M2 couldn't.)

Macs now have integrated storage and memory, so you should be aware that whatever internal storage and RAM you get, you'll be stuck with. But if you would be willing to get a 256 gig SSD in a Windows laptop, the Mac laptop with 256 gigs of storage will be just as good, and if you'd be willing to get 8 gigs of RAM in a Windows laptop the Mac will perform slightly better with the same amount of memory.

Buy a small external hard drive and hook it up so Time Machine can make daily backups of your laptop. Turn on iCloud Drive so your documents are available anywhere you can use a web browser. And get AppleCare because it will almost certainly be a waste of money but wooooooow will you be glad it's there if you need it.

I get that you are trying to help and I am not trying to be mean to you specifically, but people shouldn't buy apple computers. That's why I didn't provide specs for them. Apple is a company that is absolutely terrible to its customers and its customers deserve better than what apple is willing to offer.

Apple charges $800 to upgrade the onboard storage from a 256GB SSD to a 2TB SSD.

A 2TB SSD costs between $75-100.

I maintain that any company that would charge you more than half the cost of a new device to install a $100 part on day one is a company making the wrong computer for you.

The point of being willing to tolerate a 256GB SSD or 8GB RAM in a Windows laptop is that you're deferring some of the cost to save money at the time of purchase so that you can spend a little bit in three years instead of having to replace the entire computer. Because, you see, many people cannot afford to pay $1000 for a computer and need to buy a computer that costs $650 and will add $200 worth of hardware at a later date.

My minimum specs recommendations for a mac would be to configure one with the max possible RAM and SSD, look at the cost, and choose to go buy three i7 windows laptops with the same storage and RAM for less than the sticker price of the macs.

So let's say you want to get a 14" Macbook pro with the lowest-level processor. That's $2000. Now let's bump that from 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD to 32GB and 2TB. That gets you to $3000. (The SSD is $200 less than on the lower model, and they'll let you put in an 8TB SSD for $1800 on this model; that's not available on the 13" because apple's product development team is entirely staffed by assholes who think you deserve a shitty computer if you can't afford to pay the cost of two 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredos for a single laptop).

For $3000 you can get 3 Lenovo Workstation laptops with i7 processors, 32GB RAM, and a 2TB SSD.

And look, for just $200 more I could go up to 48GB RAM and get a 4TB SSD - it costs $600 to upgrade the 14" mac from a 2TB SSD to a 4TB SSD so you could still get three laptops with more ram and the same amount of storage for the cost of one macbook.

I get that some people need to use Final Cut and Logic Pro, but hoo boy they sure are charging you through the nose to use products that have become industry standard. The words "capture" and "monopoly" come to mind even though they don't quite apply here.

"Hostile" does, though, especially since Mac users end up locked into the ecosystem through software and cloud services and become uncertain how to leave it behind if they ever decide that a computer should cost less than a month's rent on a shitty studio apartment in LA.

There's a very good reason I didn't give mac advice and that's because my mac advice is "DON'T."

reMarkable 2 Review

I had some requests for a review of this device, and I am glad to oblige in this case. I've been closely following digital pen stylus tech for about eight years. I'm just old enough that I still need to handwrite a lot of things to tap into my creativity, but greatly dislike clutter in my life.

The reMarkable is for the person that writes enough by hand to fill several notebooks a year. For someone that wants the tactile and somatic component of writing on paper to associate with their process. The new reMarkable 2 does basically what the reMarkable 1 did; faster, better, and with a much improved piece of hardware.

If you've read my previous review from May 2018, you know I basically raved about the first generation reMarkable. I had a few criticisms of the Gen 1, and a lot of that has been addressed with the Gen 2.

Support & User Experience

I've used a reMarkable tablet continuously for almost three years. I've never had a support issue with one. The software is updated regularly, features added, and user experience improved with each iteration.

There is really no comparisons to be made with that kind of uninterrupted usage. No smartphone, tablet, or computer you ever own will be that reliable. A 3-4 year old Thinkpad, running Linux, is about as close as it gets to that level of, switch-on-and-use, every day, without fail feeling.

The reason is that the reMarkable 2 is leveraging the most reliable hardware, user input methods, stylus technology, and operating system basis available. My fear has always been that my reMarkable wouldn't be as reliable as a regular piece of paper, and a good pen. So far, that fear has never been realized with the reMarkable 1, or 2.

Pen Stylus Input

The majority of what one picks up and uses will be Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) stylus tech, with Microsoft Surface Products, or Wacom AES (Active Electrostatic) like that found in a lot of Asus, Dell, Lenovo, and so forth. The older Wacom EMR (Electromagnetic Resonance) is used less frequently, and usually only with their own products, or a version thereof with Samsung Phones and Tablets.

Of the three options, Wacom's EMR is still the best.

That's what you'll find on the reMarkable Tablet, and if you get their Marker Plus (it's the black one) it has the magical EMR eraser tip opposite the drawing point. There is no better pen stylus experience, for general use, sketching, handwriting capture, tilt sensitivity, and so forth.

What if you're like me, and you have a drawer full of pen stylus products? Mostly, this is all of this seems to be true. Also, as mentioned before all the new Marker Plus has a built in eraser, all the new accessories snap together with magnets, and it charges with USB-c.

The screen is capacitive touch capable now. No more page turning buttons, and you can swipe down from the top to back out of a document or folder. You can turn pages with the swipe of a finger now. It takes a second to get the gestures down, but they're crisp and reliable once you do.

The tablet runs off of a dual core ARM process (a good thing, in my opinion).

My only quibble is that it is supposed to be able to connect to both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz WiFi, but so far I've only gotten it to connect to 2.4. It might be something with my specific router, and I'm not sure if my experience is typical.

On the lower left hand side of the tablet there are 5 connection points. This suggests that the tablet may have the ability to connect to other accessories in the future. If reMarkable added a Plain Text Editor, and a keyboard cover to the reMarkable, I would be over the moon.

There is no evidence that they will do this, but a guy can dream. Having what's basically an e Ink Typewriter this thin and light would be the ultimate for this writer.

The Software

It is much the same experience as the reMarkable 1 with a few new additions.

You can convert your handwritten notes into text, cursive or block letters, and share by email. There is support for 33 languages.

With a Google Chrome plug-in, you can read web articles and pages on your reMarkable. If you're already battling with eye strain from looking at glowing screens all day, this is a nice feature.

Reading large PDFs and eBooks is still not crisp and snappy, but it is a vastly improved experience when compared to the reMarkable 1. Large graphically intense documents can be navigated without it taxing your patience. What I store on my reMarkable is vastly different now because of how much improved document handling has become.

I find the small sacrifice in speed rendering pages worth it, compared to the eye strain I get reading on other screens.

More pens, features, page templates, and ease of organizing have been added incrementally over time. With regard to the core functioning (Linux Based Codex OS) of the device, the manufacturer has only ever improved and supported the reMarkable.

Aesthetics

The reMarkable 1 was good for what it could do. It wasn't a bad looking product, but compared to the reMarkable 2, it was a rough prototype. Most tablets do not feel as nice in the hand as the reMarkable 2.

Rubber no-slip nubs on the back, rounded edges, satin finished glass and aluminum, make the tablet itself feel like it's from the future. I bought the Polymer Weave Book Folio, a step up from the regular Folio. A close friend got the same device and marker options as I did, but opted for the Premium Leather Folio.

Definitely, get the Book Folio, and if you can scrabble together the extra money, get the premium leather. That's my only regret is that I didn't spring for the best accessory offered. Is the Polymer Weave good? Absolutely, worth the $99. It is rigid, will protect your investment, and it's very classy looking.

My friend who picked up the Leather Folio is a graphic designer, and has greatly informed my sense of aesthetics over the years. She says the Leather Book Folio is well worth the extra. She is, most certainly, correct.

So, yeah, if you're going to get a reMarkable 2 and want a slightly used Polymer Weave Book Folio (mine), I'll let it go for cheap (so I can atone, and get the leather version, ha ha).

Value

The reMarkable 2 doesn't have a web browser, app store, Merge Dragons, audio player, or other third party applications. It won't replace your iPad, or Android Tablet. It will replace all the paper, notebooks, and pens in your life. This is especially true if you have a small scanner (like a Doxie), and leverage reMarkable's Smartphone app and cloud sync feature.

This tablet is for people that like paper, a lot, but don't want to carry it around or keep track of it. It is for people that fill 8-12 Moleskines a year, and mark up hundreds of pages of documents, for themselves, and others. It is for people that tap into their creativity by writing things down, sketching diagrams, and making lists.

The act of holding a pen or pencil against paper is a cognitive trigger, built into their implicit memory, every day, for years, that allows them to do their things.

$399 will buy a decent Samsung or Apple branded tablet, but neither of those is designed to emulate the experience of writing on paper like the reMarkable 2 tablet is. The reMarkable 2 will run you $399, a Marker Plus $99, and a Polymer Weave Folio $99, bringing it all to almost $600.

Unless you lurk reMarkable's website, and wait for a promotion. They did run a promotion for their pre-order, and will likely do something similar within a year of release. It is my recollection that the manufacturer ran at least two promotions for the Remarkable 1, and the savings were significant.

If you don't need one right this minute, check the website every week or so, their Amazon Store edifice, and whatever other options they have for your region.

Competitors

In the last few years, reMarkable has only acquired more competition in the e ink Tablet market. That competition varies depending on where you live in the world. In the US, no one makes a thing that directly competes. I looked at other products, didn't see anything that made me pull out my reMarkable 1 and make a list of pros and cons for comparison.

That isn't to say there isn't a better thing for your use case, but there wasn't for mine.

Final Thoughts

If I didn't drive this point home earlier, I'm going to make it now. The reMarkable 2 will not replace your laptop, mobile OS (iOS/Android) Tablet Device (meant to replace your laptop), or Smartphone. There isn't even a calculator app on the reMarkable 2.

The Remarkable 2 will replace the pens, pencils, highlighters, notebooks, and print outs cluttering up your daily carry bag, desk, and life. It's a digital paper option, not a personal computing option. When used for that purpose, it is exceptional, and well worth the investment.

So I've been running Linux on various systems — servers, desktop machines, and laptops — since around 1995. I've been sysadmin on public-facing, mission-criticsl webservers, and I've even had formal training. So it's kind of frustrating that my laptop, running Ubuntu, stops being usable approximately every three months

Now, this is an old laptop — a Dell Precision M4500 for those playing at home — so you'd think that the great curse of Linux on laptops, the lack of support for newer hardware, would be solved by now. And it mostly is; the smart card reader and the fingerprint scanner don't work, but then I don't need them. No, what's causing the frustration is the video card.

The Precision M4500 was a top-flight graphics workstation in 2010ish, and so it has an NVidia graphics chipset, the Quadro FX 1800M. Now, graphics drivers under Linux are a problem. Video card makers don't want to release open source drivers, so the source-available drivers are always lagging (and only really support what the developers have on hand, which is why mine doesn't work there). You can get binary-only drivers, assuming the driver is available for your software versions and CPU. But the manufacturers also don't want to keep maintaining old stuff in their newer drivers, so for old cards, you have to seek out the older versions. The Quadro FX 1800M was last supported in the 340.xx series drivers, as opposed to the newer 390.xx, 418.xx, 430.xx, 435.xx, 440.xx, 450.xx, or 455.xx drivers which are also available.

But I'd gotten that sorted out and things were running fine — until an automated upgrade of the kernel about a week ago. I only figured this out today; until now, I'd been able to boot into a text mode but not graphics. It ended up that when the kernel upgraded, it didn't install the source code headers for it — and therefore couldn't and didn't build the special kernel module that the graphics card has to have to work. Once I figured that out (after several days of dead-end attempts), I got it back to a proper working order.

I don't know if there's a point to this story, but I felt like unburdening myself in semi-public.

L'approccio a sciame alla guerra: un'introduzione per chi si trova in prima linea

Quanto segue è inteso come un'introduzione al concetto di “swarming” quale approccio alla guerra, come teorizzato da John Arquilla e David Ronfeldt in “Swarming and the Future of Conflict”, pubblicato nel 2000 per conto del National Defense Research Institute della RAND Corporation. Si spera che le tendenze emergenti dalla prima linea che sono migrate dal Movimento per la democrazia di Hong Kong del 2019 alla Ribellione di George Floyd del 2020 possano utilizzare la teoria dello sciame per elaborare la massima spesso citata, “essere acqua”.

La tecnica di guerra a sciame [swarm warfare] consiste nell'utilizzare la comunicazione orizzontale in modo che le unità possano agire in maniera autonoma e congiunta senza strutture di comando gerarchiche e centralizzate. Se questo suona familiare, non è una coincidenza: Arquilla e Ronfeldt citano la strategia degli anarchici e degli attivisti dell'alter-globalizzazione nella preparazione della battaglia di Seattle del 1999 come esempio contemporaneo di sciame nel momento in cui scrivevano. Prendendo insegnamento dalle tendenze della guerra alla fine del XX secolo, il loro lavoro propone il “Battle Swarm” come dottrina militare, cioè come approccio normativo alla conduzione di una guerra. Il Battle Swarm è quindi una istanza dei nostri nemici che imparano da come combattiamo per applicare le nostre esperienze contro di noi.

Eppure, le lezioni vanno in entrambi i sensi: nel formulare il concetto di guerra a sciame, i nostri nemici ci hanno aiutato a individuare gli aspetti tattici, strategici e logistici chiave che possiamo migliorare nelle nostre lotte. Pertanto, la seguente introduzione allo sciame come approccio al conflitto dovrebbe essere usata per valutare in modo critico e creativo le nostre tattiche nelle strade e quali tipi di infrastrutture e pratiche di comunicazione sono adatte a coordinare i nostri sforzi [1].

Il contesto storico dell'ascesa dello sciame in guerra.

Arquilla e Ronfeldt collocano la guerra a sciame all'interno della crescita delle tecnologie di comunicazione digitale che permettono di collegare le forze in una rete dove possono condividere le informazioni orizzontalmente in tempo reale. Tuttavia, per contestualizzare pienamente la guerra a sciame, vale la pena collocarla nel contesto dello spostamento storico mondiale che ha comportato l'ascesa della guerra “non lineare”, o “senza restrizioni”, nella seconda metà del XX secolo.

Durante gli anni Settanta e Ottanta, la guerra ha iniziato ad assumere una forma non lineare, o illimitata, a seguito delle guerre di decolonizzazione e delle guerre per procura [proxy wars] tra le potenze capitaliste e comuniste. Non lineare si riferisce alla mancanza di “linee del fronte” nelle guerre contemporanee, o al modo in cui la guerra oggi non si svolge tra due nemici definiti territorialmente, ma viene combattuta su popolazioni che a volte si estendono oltre i confini nazionali. Questo tipo di guerra è anche detto senza restrizioni perché elimina ogni distinzione tra mezzi di conflitto militari e non militari, tra obiettivi militari e civili, e persino tra la guerra e la pace stessa.

Il fine ultimo della guerra senza restrizioni non è quello di ottenere uno stato di pace tra belligeranti. Al contrario, tale guerra mira alla pacificazione indefinita delle popolazioni-bersaglio, generalmente considerate come focolai di potenziali insurrezioni che minacciano la stabilità minima necessaria al capitalismo. La guerra senza restrizioni prende il suo nome non solo dal fatto che riduce la politica a un'operazione permanente di polizia militare, ma anche perché estende i mezzi di guerra al di là dell'uso della forza militare. La guerra ha sempre più spesso comportato l'uso del capitale finanziario per far leva sui programmi di “aggiustamento strutturale” delle nazioni indebitate, l'uso delle guerre commerciali per manipolare le monete nazionali e il valore delle riserve monetarie rivali, e la manipolazione delle informazioni per influenzare le percezioni e il comportamento degli avversari politici come delle popolazioni bersaglio [2].

In questo contesto, le tattiche di sciame sono state usate non solo dai combattenti cineticamente orientati (cioè quelli che usano la forza materiale e la potenza di fuoco, siano essi militari statali, società di sicurezza private o forze di guerriglia partigiane), ma anche da attori non statali in tutto il campo sociale. Per esempio, lo sciame può caratterizzare gli attivisti e le ONG che cercano di aumentare la loro influenza sui responsabili politici attraverso zaps telefonici in congiunzione con le campagne dei media pubblici, gli hacker che interrompono i sistemi di comunicazione attraverso attacchi DDOS guidati da botnet, e i social network di parte come il movimento Boogaloo che si è formato attraverso la creazione e la circolazione di meme che elaborano una sensibilità strategica per lo sciame sulle crisi politiche [3]. Infine, lo sciame caratterizza a volte anche il blocco nero, coloro che si trovano in prima linea, e i saccheggiatori che utilizzano metodi non letali per combattere o eludere le forze di polizia più pesantemente armate.

Guerra a sciame

Che cos'è, allora, la guerra a sciame? Arquilla e Ronfeldt affermano: “Prevediamo lo sviluppo di nuovi tipi di piccole unità militari chiamate ‘pods’ che possono operare in ‘cluster’. Queste unità dovrebbero essere disperse per mitigare il rischio rappresentato dal fuoco ostile. Tuttavia, esse sarebbero caratterizzate da grande mobilità, modesti requisiti logistici e ‘topsight’ [...] Possedendo sia la mobilità che la conoscenza della situazione, saranno in grado di colpire, brulicando da tutte le direzioni, tanto con il fuoco quanto con la forza”. Scomponiamo tutto questo in tre distinte caratteristiche della guerra a sciame.

(i) Piccole unità da combattimento, o “pods” e “pod clusters". La guerra a sciame comporta l'azione congiunta di piccole unità relativamente autonome. In contrasto con gli eserciti che operano sulla premessa che i grandi numeri sono sempre migliori, Arquilla e Ronfeldt chiedono la “devoluzione del potere alle piccole unità”. Per esempio, un’unità di base di uno sciame può essere un individuo o un “groviglio” di individui (per esempio, un gruppo di affinità). Questi moduli possono, nel corso del loro ingaggio, decidere di coordinarsi come un “grappolo di grovigli” per un periodo di tempo, e poi andare per la loro strada una volta raggiunto il loro obiettivo o quando costretti a sciogliersi dall'avversario. Ciò che è fondamentale in questo caso è che un gran numero di piccole unità possono formare uno sciame mobile in cui l'iniziativa di attacco può provenire praticamente da qualsiasi punto. Esistono qui possibili varianti che possono essere adattate ai piccoli numeri disponibili, come ad esempio i “packs”. I “packs” sono “formazioni semi-disperse” che convergono opportunisticamente per attaccare bersagli deboli o vaganti. Qui loro citano l'opposizione serba a Slobodan Milosevic, che ha reclutato “teppisti da stadio” le cui formazioni a nugoli hanno contribuito a proteggere i manifestanti dalla polizia e a volte anzi spesso l'hanno attaccata [3].

(ii) “Topsight” [vista dall'alto], o conoscenza orizzontalmente accessibile della lotta. Ciò è particolarmente importante per le situazioni di combattimento nella vita reale (IRL). Lo swarming dà priorità alla comunicazione orizzontale tra le unità di combattimento per massimizzare il loro potere decisionale indipendente. A differenza di una struttura di comando militare centralizzata in cui l'autorità e la conoscenza del terreno aumentano man mano che si sale nella gerarchia, lo swarming utilizza il topsight ad accesso aperto per consentire alle piccole unità autonome di agire come una forza comune verso obiettivi condivisi. La vista dall’alto [topsight] si riferisce alla conoscenza strategicamente rilevante del terreno di battaglia; è la visione a volo d’uccello che viene creata e utilizzata da coloro che si trovano sul terreno mentre condividono le informazioni nel corso delle operazioni. Tuttavia, la vista dall'alto include anche le segnalazioni dello sciame, o i segnali emessi dai membri autonomi dello sciame per convergere con velocità su un bersaglio.

Forse i primi black blocs totalmente collegati in rete sono stati quelli del Movimento per la democrazia di Hong Kong, che ha usato non solo walkie-talkie, ma anche canali Telegram che collegavano una vasta rete di telefoni usa e getta anonimi [4]. Gli abitanti di Hong Kong usavano Telegram sia per coinvolgere i partecipanti nei ruoli necessari, sia per prendere decisioni con la sua funzione di sondaggio.

Poiché il tempo impiegato per elaborare le informazioni è un costo per lo sciame nel suo complesso, le unità dello sciame devono fare attenzione a condividere solo le informazioni rilevanti in modo da evitare un sovraccarico di informazioni. Questo è un problema che è stato rilevato per quanto riguarda il canale Telegram di Minneapolis dedicato alla trasmissione degli scanner della polizia durante i primi giorni della Ribellione di George Floyd. Gli utenti hanno dovuto setacciare le notizie sugli eventi che si svolgevano in altre città per trovare informazioni che potessero essere utilizzate per il coordinamento locale. Non c'era inoltre alcuna indicazione sulla qualità delle informazioni trasmesse, e il canale ha finito per diffondere voci sulla Guardia Nazionale e sulle milizie che si sono rivelate false. Il recente sviluppo dei canali Telegram che operano come Remote Uprising Support Teams (“RUST”) specifici per la città, dedicati alla trasmissione di informazioni infografiche e di intelligence aggiornate, sembra avere risposto alla necessità di comunicazioni esclusivamente orientate all’intelligence. Mentre l’uso di Telegram per scopi informativi è migrato da Hong Kong agli Stati Uniti, per ora le sue funzioni di coordinamento non lo hanno fatto. La nostra speranza è che l’uso di telefoni usa e getta e di canali orientati a specifiche funzioni continui a diffondersi, in modo da poter sperimentare le possibilità di connettere le folle in occasione delle manifestazioni.

(iii) Attacco onnidirezionale. Come un alveare che attacca un intruso, il movimento caratteristico di uno sciame è quello di attaccare da tutte le direzioni in “impulsi”, o brevi raffiche che coprono il bersaglio, seguite da dispersione e disimpegno. L'onnidirezionalità richiede sia un numero sufficiente di persone sia un’ottima visibilità, in modo che i grovigli possano momentaneamente ammassarsi intorno ad un bersaglio condiviso per sopraffarlo.

Per esempio, i canali Telegram sono stati utili ai dimostranti di Hong Kong per mappare collettivamente gli obiettivi della polizia, che hanno permesso a più “maghi della luce” e “maghi del fuoco” di disattivare otticamente e attaccare cineticamente gli obiettivi in modo coordinato da tutti i lati. Gli impulsi di convergenza e le successive dispersioni dovevano essere rapidi per evitare di essere rintracciati da altre unità di polizia.

Qui può essere utile introdurre la terza variazione di Arquilla e Ronfeldt sullo sciame oltre agli alveari e a nugoli, ovvero le “folle” composte da individui o piccoli gruppi che agiscono convenientemente in numero sufficientemente grande da creare un effetto di massa complessivo. Il saccheggio emerge spesso in questo modo, poiché il potenziale che risiede nella dimensione numerica e nella velocità della folla permette ai suoi membri di prendere iniziative individuali. Questi primi atti di furto con scasso oltrepassano una soglia che apre nuove possibilità, ma è solo la diffusione o la ripetizione di questa prima azione in tutta la folla che la trasforma in una folla di “saccheggiatori”. Anche se alcuni membri rimangono cauti e si fanno da parte, continuano a preservare efficacemente il potere della folla, fungendo da barriera protettiva contro coloro che vorrebbero intervenire.

Distinguere la guerra degli sciami da altri tipi di guerra

Per aiutare a illustrare la guerra degli sciami, Arquilla e Ronfeldt la distinguono da altri tre tipi di combattimento visti nel corso della storia umana. Li riportiamo qui di seguito non solo per chiarire ulteriormente lo sciame, ma anche per suggerire che gli insorti non dovrebbero essere ortodossi riguardo ai loro metodi di combattimento e dovrebbero trovare il giusto mix che si adatti alla loro situazione.

Il primo di questi è la “mischia caotica”, “uno scontro di armi caotico e non diretto a distanza ravvicinata”. Questo si vede spesso in scontri disorganizzati con la polizia, soprattutto quando quest'ultima si affida a manganelli e bastoni. Le mischie tendono a favorire quelli con un numero e un armamento superiori, ed è per questo che Arquilla e Ronfeldt sostengono che il “massing” (o guerra di massa) molto probabilmente si è sviluppato come una evoluzione della mischia. La guerra di massa privilegia il numero di combattenti e istituisce gerarchie di comando. Anche se questa comporta un piccolo numero di passi avanti - l’articolazione di un esercito in sezioni e linee, così come lo sviluppo di “semafori” [dal greco, portatore di segni, ndt] come i segnali a mano, le bandiere e gli inviti a comunicare direttive su tutta la distanza del campo di battaglia, tutte tecniche sviluppate esplicitamente a Hong Kong nel 2019 - sia la mischia caotica che la guerra di massa si basano principalmente sulla "forza bruta” dei numeri per vincere. Con alcuni progressi tecnici e comunicativi, tuttavia, la guerra “di manovra agile” è nata per consentire agli eserciti più piccoli di superare i loro svantaggi quantitativi.

Le manovre agili implicano primariamente la lotta nel creare una disorganizzazione nei ranghi del nemico. A volte questo comporterà la messa a nudo di punti deboli o di bersagli isolati che possono essere attaccati in dettaglio, o l'uso di simulazioni per attirare il nemico in una posizione che ne prolungherà eccessivamente la capacità di coordinamento. Un esempio recente di ciò viene dalla battaglia per la statua di Colombo a Chicago il 17 luglio 2020. Lì, la polizia antisommossa ha tentato di riprendere la collina della statua usando dapprima immense quantità di spray al peperoncino e manganellate per respingere i dimostranti. La folla sparpagliata e indebolita si è parzialmente ritirata in alcuni punti, il che ha spinto una parte della linea della polizia a passare all'offensiva. La polizia che avanzava ha dovuto spezzare la linea in unità più piccole di una mezza dozzina o giù di lì. Tuttavia, almeno in un caso, una di queste unità si è allontanata troppo ed è stata attirata da un piccolo numero di manifestanti che si sono schierati contro di loro. Questi ultimi hanno unito le braccia per formare una piccola linea contro la polizia. L’unità di polizia ha risposto violentemente con il manganello, fino a quando non si sono rapidamente uniti altri manifestanti, alcuni unendo le braccia, altri semplicemente correndo per attaccare gli agenti con proiettili e calci. Ben presto, la piccola unità della polizia antisommossa si è trovata non solo troppo lontana dalla loro linea per ricevere sostegno, ma anche circondata da una fila serpeggiante di manifestanti, che hanno molestato e assalito questa unità fino a imporre la fuga. In quello che si è rivelato essere qualcosa di simile a un'inversione di marcia dello sciamare, questa unità si era sopravvalutata nel rompere la linea, attratta da quello che all’inizio sembrava essere un “bersaglio facile”.

Il limite della guerra a sciame nelle forze armate degli stati avanzati

È fondamentale sottolineare che, come sostengono Arquilla e Ronfeldt, le forze armate statali che usano tattiche a sciame incontrano gli stessi limiti di quelle che usano la guerra di massa o le manovre agili, cioè la guerriglia partigiana. Una forza di guerriglia che combatte sul proprio territorio in mezzo ad una popolazione che la appoggia avrà sempre un vantaggio contro le forze armate statali. Una tale forza conosce il terreno e può scomparire nella popolazione generale, che fornirà ai guerriglieri anche soluzioni a molte delle sue esigenze logistiche. Negli ultimi quarant'anni, gli Stati nazionali sono stati in gran parte contrari alle tecniche genocide di distruzione totale, come le campagne di bombardamento a tappeto e la guerra nucleare, e hanno impiegato questi mezzi solo ad alti prezzi per la loro legittimità tra i propri cittadini.

Inoltre, poiché lo sviluppo della guerra ha favorito forme non lineari incentrate sulla pacificazione indefinita piuttosto che sulla distruzione totale, è improbabile che gli Stati-nazione contemporanei superino il limite posto dalla guerriglia in tempi brevi. I rivoluzionari dovrebbero tenerlo a mente nel momento in cui i nostri conflitti con lo Stato e le forze di estrema destra si intensificano. Nelle città e nelle periferie, avremo bisogno di quartieri in cui poter scomparire, e di residenti partigiani disposti a fornire aiuto reciproco ai combattenti. In un caso, un canale Telegram di utenti anonimi ha addirittura procurato sia una via di fuga che una squadra di recupero per un frontliner attraverso i sistemi di tunnel sotterranei sotto l'Università Politecnica. Come ha detto un giornalista, “è stata un'operazione di alcuni”. Durante i primi giorni della ribellione di George Floyd a Minneapolis, i residenti hanno messo pacchi di bottiglie di acqua e panini ai bordi dei loro prati, una pratica che da allora si è diffusa in decine di altre città. Questi piccoli gesti di cura e sostegno dovranno crescere di numero e diventare sempre più di parte man mano che la lotta avanza.

[2] Due esempi che coinvolgono quello che Arquilla e Ronfeldt chiamano “cyber sciame” sono lo scandalo dell'ingerenza russa nelle elezioni americane del 2016 e le false voci “circolate” o amplificate a seguito di disordini e saccheggi durante la ribellione di George Floyd.

[3] Lo “sciame cyber”, ovvero l'attività di sciame degli utenti di Internet sui social media, è un argomento troppo ampio per essere trattato in questa sede. Arquilla e Ronfeldt sono stati anche i primi teorici di questo fenomeno con il loro libro, “Networks e Netwars: Il futuro del terrore, del crimine e della militanza”. Alex Goldenberg e Joel Finkelstein sono stati recentemente autori di un rapporto sullo sciame cyber del movimento Boogaloo nel corso della ribellione di George Floyd dal titolo “Cyber Swarming, Memetic Warfare e Viral Insurgency. How Domestic Militants Organize on Memes to Incite Violent Insurrection and Terror Against Government and Law Enforcement”. In esso, sostengono che il movimento Boogaloo è cresciuto e si è diffuso come un virus semantico, utilizzando strategie virali per nascondere la loro esistenza, compromettere le strutture immunitarie della società civile, e fomentare le condizioni per attacchi di sciame in relazione alle crisi politiche.
