My scrambled thoughts on Swansea is that he's not a good man. An upstanding man but not a good one.

I think it's important to focus on how Swansea doesn't do the things he does because of some moral code. He is actively rude and condescending and dismissive of the others at many points. Yet, he does his job, he's not a slacker and he's relatively by the books. He has a family he doesn't like and a job he also hates. He brought himself out of alcoholism but isn't really proud of himself for it. He does what needs to be done in a way but he really doesn't put that extra effort in.

He's a jerk but the type of guy where that's the best thing he leveled out to being. He's somewhat content with his life but no where near happy. He's bitter but not angry, disillusioned but he'll hang the wool over his eyes for a sleep mask. He's been through the motions, he's fought his demons and he doesn't want to deal with anyone elses. He's not altrustic in the sense he'd giving or carrying but does what needs to get done, but he's still reactive. He has to hit those points of actions.

In a way he is justified. He's worked on himself and made something awful into something perfectly okay. Perhaps part of him misses that extreme of himself but he knows it wasn't healthy. He worked past it but he's not really striving to feel good about it, he does things out of duty rather than personal convictions. He has them, but he doesn't reveal them to just anyone. No one needs to know and while the abrasiveness is rude its not totally not understandable.
