The small cloud white mare with black mane and tail was industriously clipping the grass and weeds around the tomb of Colonel Goodheart. The marble of his monument was softly lighted by the moon overhead. Done with her weed and grass tending, she raked up the trimmings into a tidy pile, ready to gather them up and take to the tomb that she shared with the liches Zom and Junea.
Even though she had heard it before, she listened politely to the Colonel's ghost as he talked to her while she worked, “Kind of ironic, you know, Bonnie, my mare.  I fought in two Prance Incursion Wars and didn't get a scratch.  Home on leave, despite my name of Goodheart, it was my bad heart that got me!  Heart attack and here I am!
“I am so glad that a mortal like you lives among us who have passed on. It helps to have somepony like you to chat with.”
Bonnie smiled, “It works both ways, Colonel Goodheart.  I was abandoned as a small filly because of my stunted horn.  If Zom and Junea had not taken me into their tomb, I would have died that first winter.  Since then, you ghosts and liches have taught me so many neat and useful things!”
Bonnie was just reaching her limited horn magic down to bind her tasty grass and weed clippings into a shock to take back to the tomb that she lived in, when a pony came charging up and careless hooves scattered her dinner!
The intruder announced breathlessly, “I am Melissa Newsnose, reporter for the Ponyville's Dark Secrets magazine!  I am here to demand . . .”
Very irritated, Bonnie did not wait to hear more.  She pulled out a whistle and blew three sharp blasts!
Pulled up short, Melissa, now irritated herself, snapped, “What was that for?”
Bonnie replied angrily, “The police!  It is after visiting hours and this cemetery is CLOSED!  Whoever you are, whatever your errand, you will be arrested for trespassing.”
Drawing herself up haughtily, Melissa replied, “I am a REPORTER working on a story.  You have no right to . . .”
Return police whistles cut her off.  There were nightwatch lanterns visible at the cemetery gate.  Official voices called, “Miss Bones!  Where are you?  What is happening?”
Bonnie called back, “Over here by the Goodheart monument!  We have an after hours trespasser!”
The police ponies converged on the scene.  One addressed the reporter, “Melissa, I am afraid that Bonnie is correct.  You have no business here at this hour.”
Argumentatively she retorted, “Then what is SHE doing here?”
Bonnie waited while the officer replied in a mild tone, “Miss Bones works here as a caretaker, usually in the evenings or after dark.  She tends the graves and keeps the grass trimmed.”
Bonnie agreed, “And part of my payment from Duchess Red Hoof is the right to graze the trimmings.”  She pointed to Melissa and growled, “Clumsy hoof there just ruined my dinner trimmings.  I had some nice dandelion flowers and greens and a nice thistle bloom but she trampled them all and even scattered my grass.”
Melissa drawled, “Sorry, I am sure.  You can just go pick some more.  I am here to solve the Morgripe murder case.”
Bonnie looked up with interest.  “Oh, have you found some shred of proof that he was murdered?  Something not in the police reports on the case?  Last that I heard, he was listed as a missing pony.”
One of the police ponies nodded.  “That's what we concluded.  I was on that case.  Bonnie here, stopped Morgripe, Gabe and Chaz from vandalism by knocking both Morgripe and Gabe flat.  Chaz ran and brought us.  He was spouting all sorts of nonsense about Miss Bones dropping from the sky on them!  Gabe got up and ran too, abandoning Morgripe.
It appears that after Miss Bones picked up their tools and paint brush, that Morgripe got up and left on his own.”
Melissa pounced on that.  “How do you know that she did not kill him, then?”
He replied, “Easy.  The grass and sod where he and Gabe fell made excellent impressions.  Besides, the spilled paint marked the spot beautifully.  If he was killed, his body would have to have been dragged off or carried.  She is too small to have carried him. Likewise, there were no deep tracks made by a heavily laden pony and no drag marks.  There were some hoof prints going back to the gravel path.  QED, he left on his own.
“I suspect that he finally actually saw Miss Bones during and after she flattened him.  He was always liar and braggart.  For years he and his buddies were saying that there was a monster in the graveyard.  I think that he realized that his monster was a filly way smaller than any of them and knew that the truth would get out.  Embarrassed, he just sneaked off and left town.”
Melissa snorted, “I saw the police reports.  Very unsatisfactory.  How could such a little wither horn as her possibly take on three ponies, all bigger than she is?”
Before Bonnie could respond to the insult, one of the police ponies cut in, “That last entry in the Morgripe file was made by constable Crager. That report came about because he saw Bonnie get ambushed by both Gabe and Chaz.
“She flattened both of them and put a sleeper hold on Gabe, knocking him out for ten minutes or so.  Her involvement in the Morgripe case came up in conversation.  She then provided a statement which gave us better detail but changed nothing basic.”
Bonnie acidly pointed out, “This LITTLE WITHER HORN will be happy to demonstrate how I flattened those evil ponies.  All that you need to do is agree that I am not responsible for your injuries in front of these nice police ponies.  Once you do that, the demonstration can begin at once.”
Melissa turned to the police ponies and demanded, “Are you going to just stand there and let her threaten me like that?”
Calmly one of them replied, “Ma'am, you have been nothing but rude and unpleasant since we arrived.  We were called to deal with your trespassing in the cemetery after closing, which IS a crime, if a minor one.
“Bonnie did not threaten you, either.  You asked a question that was very rude and contained a direct personal insult.  She offered to answer it by a physical demonstration, which I gather, from your response, you have refused.”
The other put in, “Bonnie has been most forbearing in not demanding your immediate arrest and removal.  However, that is why we responded and what we must do.  Will you come to the station house, or must we put you in manacles?”
As they led her off, Bonnie heard Melissa expostulating, “But I am trying solve the Morgripe murder case!  She is a witness!”
Bonnie turned back to her work and found a pleasant surprise.  The ghost of the Colonel had been busy.  All of her clippings had been regathered. That was not all.  There was a nice sized helping of dandelion flowers to replace the few that had been ruined by Melissa's hooves.
The old warrior's ghost smiled down at her from where he was sitting on top of his tomb.  “Gathering that together and finding you more dandelions was pretty tiring, Bonnie.”
She smiled up at him and, gathering her meal with her weak magic, ghost floated up to his level to eat it.  Her legs folded comfortably under her, as if she were resting on a nice cushion, instead of empty air, offered, “I know that was hard for you do do, Colonel.  Here, even if you can't eat any of it, at least you can share the scent of it.”
They completed her meal in companionable silence.  Taking her leave politely, Bonnie went home, walking into Zom and Junea's crypt through the door.  As usual, she did not bother to open it, but simply passed through the solid oaken panels like she had been taught to do so long ago by the many ghosts who shared the graveyard with her adoptive parents, Zom and Junea.  There were other liches of several sorts and a few vampires too.  They all had good things to add to the education of an abandoned foal like she was.
She settled herself on the empty coffin shelf that had been her place since Zom and Junea took her in.  The attentive liches that she loved so much, carefully tucked her in before retiring to their coffins to wait out the passing of the day.
The next evening they arose as usual and shared a quiet breakfast. Technically, only Bonnie ate the fried hay twists but her loving liches took pleasure and emotional nourishment from watching her eat.
Since ponies rarely look UP, Bonnie floated ghost-like, up and put her head through the stone roof of the crypt to look about.  The way being clear, she floated over to the gravel path and trotted quietly towards the gate.  She floated up to peer cautiously over the wall.
Sure enough, there was Melissa Newsnose sitting in the omnibus weather shelter, keeping an eye on the cemetery mail box.  Bonnie went to the corner of the cemetery closest to the forest and emerged from the brush there, making it appear that she had come out of the Everfree. She trotted up the street to check the mailbox.
She was removing a letter and a note when Melissa spoke up.  “I wish to apologize for my behavior last evening, Miss Bones.  Would you be willing to show me where you encountered Morgipe, Gabe and Chaz?  I really am working on a story for Ponyville's Dark Secrets magazine.”
Bonnie chuckled, “You are new there, aren't you?  Your first story? Right?”
Melissa nodded as she got up.  “Yes, it is.  They told me that it was an important unsolved case.  Why do you ask?”
Bonnie produced a key and opened the gate for them to enter.  “Because PDS pulls that on just about all of their new staffers.  Seeing how fast they catch on that is a missing pony case rather than a murder is part of their testing new hires.”
“You just blew their game, didn't you?”
“Why not?  They aren't paying me.  Besides, you can still make a good story out of his disappearance.”
Carefully locking the gate behind them, Bonnie escorted Melissa into the cemetery.  Shortly she pointed, “I was doing some mortar repair on that tomb.  Since I was behind it and down almost at ground level with the work, they did not notice me.”
Bonnie crouched behind the tomb.  “When I heard enough of their plans, I jumped from here to the middle of the path, right between them and gave a Morgripe double buck.  I followed that with a forehoof strike at Gabe.  Chaz ran like a rabbit.  While I was gathering up their hammers and prybars, Gabe got up and ran too.  Morgripe just lay there blubbering.  I got his paint brush.
“Since I had seen him, his tools were gone and his paint all spilled, I figured that he wasn't going to do anything more and left to get ready for a Nightmare Night party.  When I got back from that, it was nearly dawn.  I looked, but there was no sign of him or any vandalism.  Went home.”
Melissa looked everything over carefully.  “I see.  That was quite a jump, but nothing impossible.  No wonder they thought that you fell from the sky!”
She made copious notes.  “I have two more things to ask, Bonnie. First, what do you think happened to Morgripe?  And second, would you please look over my story draft before I turn it in?”
As they were approaching the cemetery gate, Bonnie gave a cheerful laugh.  “Sure.  I will be happy to look over your story.
“As for that other one, I see three possibilities.  First, it was after the Nightmare rose and was sharing the sky with Celestia.  At such times, according to witches, the border between here and Nightmare Lands is thin.  He may have wandered into Nightmare and vanished from this Equestria.  Second, he may have gone into the Everfree, which is close by, to try finding my place to get even for being stopped.  He was like that.  Bad things can happen to any pony who does not know what he is about in the Everfree.  Third, the police version.  He left out of shame when he found out that the monster that he was talking up for years was a filly, smaller than any of them.”
As Bonnie was re locking the gate, Melissa said, “The Everfree angle was not in the police reports.  Thanks.  I think that I will use that one.  As for your first one, do you really believe that?”
Bonnie gave another giggle.  “I spend most of my time in a graveyard.  I just had to say it!”

Daybreak Academy: Chapter 49
Romantics For Life
Summary: In which Ventus wins a teddy bear, Lauriam and Strelitzia discuss her crush, and Ephemer gains an intense hatred for Skuld. Word Count: 1,706 First | Previous | Next ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆ ⚬ ☆
Ventus was starting to think that absolutely no one like resting around here. Not the Dandelions, not the headmasters, not even Lauriam's sister and Anora. Sure, the Star Festival was a given occasion that they had to participate in, but seriously- they had only arrived at the beach four days ago. When were they going to stop running around and actually relax for once?
At least the activity kept his mind off of Vanitas. That must have accounted for something.
Ven walked alone, trying to not get too overwhelmed by all the carnival games and the smell of deep fried food as he walked down the boardwalk. He didn't know where everyone else had gone. The last time he had seen everyone, Skuld, Anora, and Strelitzia had put on rather nice looking yukata, and Ephemer and Lauriam were simply wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Brain had gone to the festival far before anyone else, so Ven definitely had no idea where the older kid was now.
That is, until Ven happened to stumble across the balloon dart game. Brain was actively trying to predict his current throw- Ventus almost laughed when he noted that the older kid had one eye closed and his tongue sticking out in concentration. Brain finally made his throw, and then immediately let out a disappointed “Drat!” when it missed. Ven couldn't help but laugh, which earned him Brain's attention.
“Hey Ven!” Brain called over to him. “Wanna try this dart game with me?”
Knowing he had been spotted, Ven let out a nervous chuckle as he scratched the back of his head. “S-sure.” he agreed as he walked over to Brain.
Suddenly nervous as he picked up the balloon dart, Ventus gave Brain a quick side glance before turning his attention to the balloons. There were five rows of balloons- each row corresponding with a different color of the rainbow, which indicated what kind of prize could be won if they were popped. The higher the balloon, the higher the prize, obviously. Ventus tried to carefully line up his shot with one of the middle tier balloons and made a silent prayer to himself before tossing it.
His heart nearly leaped into his throat when the dart popped the exact balloon he had been aiming for. Barely. Just barely.
“Congrats Ven!” Brain cheered for him, giving the kid a hearty pat on the back.
“It was just a lucky shot...” Ventus sheepishly said, reached a hand behind his head.
“Lucky or not,” the older kid mused, “You get to pick out a prize now. So Ven, which one is it?”
Ventus jumped a little before looking at the prizes he could get. His heart was pounding far harder than it should have been as he looked the prizes over. “That one!” he finally declared as he pointed to a medium sized teddy bear.
Brain tried to hold back his laughter as the game's operator got down the teddy bear for Ven. The younger kid happily hugged the stuff toy in joy.
“Don't ever change Ven.” Brain then mused, placing a hand at the back brim of his fedora.
“Huh?” the younger questioned. “What's that about?”
But his only answer was a laugh, right before Brain messed up Ven's hair a bit. Ventus recoiled out of the way with a grimace. But, despite himself, he also started to laugh.
. . .
“Oh, look at that one.” Lauriam said to Strelitzia as he pointed out a line of fukinagashi streamers. “It looks like they hand painted those symbols on. The detail is so intricate.”
“But what about those paper cranes?” Strelitzia offered, motioning to a booth that sold origami creations. “Imagine how long it took for them to create all those little cranes!”
“True enough.” her brother laughed. Strelitzia gave him a bright smile of her own before joining in. It was a small relief seeing his sister's relaxed demeanor after several months of watching her slowly agonize over an unrequited crush.
“Would you like some mochi?” he asked her some time later. “I think I saw a food stand offering some earlier.”
“Sure!” she grinned. For a fleeting moment, he could see so much of their mother in her. He wondered how their mother would have handled Strelitzia's crush; surely their mother was the type that would have loved to have grandchildren. Unfortunately, it seemed both he and Strelitzia seemed to be slightly more deviant in that regard- but they were still young, there was still time.
The siblings found a stand offering mochi, and Lauriam paid for two. They then sat down on a nearby park bench to feast on their sweet treats. Truth be told, Lauriam didn't have much of an appetite at the moment.
“How are you doing?”
“Hmm?” Strelitzia turned to him with her spoon still in her mouth. She took it out -making a little 'pop' sound in the process- before inquiring, “What do you mean?”
“Well, if your cabin is anything like ours, it means that you girls are all sharing the same bedroom.” he said to her- sounding as if he were speaking more of a thought “I wanted to make sure you were getting enough sleep since she would also be sleeping there.”
“She…?” Strelitzia started to question before it hit her. Her face quickly flushed as she looked away from her brother. “It… it was hard, at first. But she goes to bed pretty early, so it's not that bad, I guess. I don't think I slept well the first few nights though. Just thinking that she was right there...”
Strelitzia looked down at her mochi. The ice cream inside was starting to melt and threatened to dribble over the outer coating.
“Have you ever just…” she started to say, faltered, then started again, “Have you ever just wanted to kiss someone so badly that you'd be willing to forget that other people will notice? And… And you're afraid that everything will change between you two, even if you never truly knew each other before then?”
Lauriam was silent for awhile. He lulled his head from side to side as he thought the idea over. “Can't say I have.” he finally decided. “But I've never felt an actual attraction to someone either.”
“Oh...”
“Strelitzia,” Lauriam sighed. “I really want to help you, but I don't know how. I've been wondering a lot lately on how Mother would deal with this.”
At the mention of their mother, Strelizia's head popped back up. She looked at Lauriam with wide eyes and her jaw slightly agape.
“Mother?”
Lauriam nodded. He reclined a bit on the park bench, looking up at the sky. “The thing is, the more I dwell on it, the more I come to realize that I'm not the one that can help you. It's time to make a choice Strelitzia; you need to talk to Anora.”
Well, if her jaw hadn't hit the ground yet, it certainly did now. “H-how?” Strelitzia questioned, her voice sounding more like a strangled cat. “I… I can't…!”
But Lauriam shrugged. He had nothing else to offer. However, in some attempt to assure her, he mumbled, “May your heart be your guiding key.”
. . .
There were very few things that Ephemer truly hated. Skuld insisting that they make Tanabata wishes was starting to become one of those things.
“It'll be fun.” she assured him and Anora. 'Fun.' Right. Sure. As if she wasn't the one to make the girls wear yakuta, or purposely grant them all the best application of smokey eye this world has ever seen. And then there was Anora. Anora who, despite saying nothing so far this whole festival, made Ephemer's heart rush with a single side glance. The wonder in her eyes almost made her shine under the festival lights, drinking in every colorful lantern and origami crane like it was her first time out in the world. How could anyone be so… adorable? At this point, Ephemer was going to keep biting his lip until it bled.
The three of them had moved away from the main festival to a quiet picnic area on the beach. Anora had chose to write her wish at a different table than Ephemer and Skuld. Not that it mattered, they were all going to see the wishes when they hung them up anyway.
“Are you done yet?” Skuld asked him, her voice hushed so Anora couldn't hear. “Or are you going to keep gawking all night?”
Ephemer looked up from his wish strip and gave Skuld a funny glare.
“What are you talking about?” he asked her.
An impish smile crossed his friend's face when she said, “I know you have a crush.”
“I do not-!” Ephemer immediately tried to shout back, but caught himself before hissing, “I do not have a crush on Anora.”
“Never said it was Anora.” Skuld smirked. “But now that you mention it...”
“Skuld, you're ridiculous.”
To this, she let out a rather unflattering snort. “Me?” she mused. “I'm the one being ridiculous? You were the one who drooled over themselves at the formal!”
“That was different.”
“No it wasn't.”
A small growl escaped Ephemer's lips. “Yes, it was.”
“Urg, fine.” Skuld decided, throwing her hands in the air. “I've known you for six years, I know when to cut my losses.”
But the words stung. They lingered in Ephemer's mind as the three of them hung their wishes up on a palm tree. And you know what? Forget Skuld. She knew how to get under his skin, and (unfortunately) it worked. He hated her. He hated her more than these stupid wish strips, this stupid festival, and the mere fact that she might have even been right.
But then Anora's wish strip flickered at him from the corner of his eye. There was a word he was able to catch- a word he really wished he hadn't had seen. Making sure that Anora and Skuld had left, Ephemer moved a bit closer to the wish strip to read it in full. A part of his heart sank. He knew so little about her. This wasn't fair. There was no way that he could…
“Skuld, I freaking hate you.”

Summer’s Solstice in the Northeast Kingdom
Tumblr media
First I’ll start by saying the Solstice here in the Kingdom is by no means “midsummer” it is truely the beginning of the summer season. Summer’s Solstice (0° ♋︎) falls around June 21. The spring ephemerals have just lost their petals and summer time blooms have taken over, the trees finally have their leaves fully grown, and a deep hue of green covers the hillsides. The spring time energy of growth begins to settle and weaken things start to move slow and steady. Summer is here ! The Sun is ruling and shows its greatness on the longest day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Feast of Flowers: summer time blooms are tempting bees and humans alike with their sweet smells and bright colors. On the Solstice we indulge in a feast of edible flowers incorporating them into all sorts of dishes: a salad with calendula and peppery nasturtiums, fried squash and day lilly fritters, candied bee balm and lavender cakes topped with dandelion jelly.
Tumblr media
On the longest day we give Sacrifice to the Sun. Offerings of herbs and flowers, the burning of a bees wax or yellow candles, resins from spruce and pine, a bonfire, a libation of mead, are given to the sun in thanks for bringing the seasons especially the ones of growth. Other summer time energies, especially the pollinator spirits, are recongonized on the Solstice and are also left offerings and gifts. Some summer animals that are also honored are: bees, song birds, fire flies, and loons.
The Summertime brings back the dense forest growth and on the longest day fairies and other forest folk are more active. Use this day to explore or meditate somewhere in nature and perhaps you’ll come across one of these spirits.
Solstice gives extra energy to magic. Utilize Solstice as a time for ethnogens or flying ointments. Perform summer magic and energy gathering rituals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The altar is decorated with: an orange/yellow or pure bees wax candle, a deep green candle, herbal incenses, fresh picked flowers, symbols of the sun and other seasonal curiosities and finds from the forest.
Things to do on the Solstice: Eat fresh food! Collect flowers and herbs, make a summertime wreath or flower crown. Solstice is a perfect days for working with herbs and flowers and adds solar energy to oil infusions, tinctures and other potions. Make sun tea! Have a picnic, visit a body of water. Bonfire! Watch the sunset.

Music I Listen To: Daniel Caesar, Dua Lipa, Drake, Destiny’s Child.  Movies I’ve Seen: The Darjeeling Limited, Django Unchained, Definitely, Maybe, Dreamgirls, The Danish Girl,  Dumbo. Names I Like: Dakota, Deirdre. And now, onto the random questions! What is today’s date? It just turned June 17th a minute ago. Have you ever had a dog? Yes, I still have one at the moment and he’s lightly snoring in front of me. Have you ever gone on/been put on a diet? No, I never really had to. Did you know that donkeys can mate with zebras and with horses? Sure, I learned about hybrid animals from the numerous encyclopedias my dad bought me from as soon as I learned how to read haha. Do you ever feel like you want to die? Do you have any loved ones who have died? It’s not as bad as before fortunately, but I still have those days. And yes, I do. I didn’t experience loss until I was 17 with my grandpa’s death, but ever since then I’ve had more relatives pass away. Did you know that degus are actually a type of rodent that can be kept as a pet? I’ve never even heard of them. What do you like to drink? I like coffee, milkshakes, milk tea, and plain ol’ cold water. Have you ever tried to count the spots on a Dalmation before? Nope. I’ve never been that physically close to a dalmatian, but even if I got that chance I don’t think I’d be spending time counting its spots. What’s your favorite kind of dinosaur? I don’t really have one. I do have a favorite dinosaur character though – Rex from Toy Story haha. What’s your favorite dessert? Macarons, cupcakes, and cheesecake. Daffodils, daisies, or dandelions? Honestly had to google each of these because I don’t know what they look like lol and looking at all of them, I’m drawn to dandelions the most. How often do you cook your own dinner? Never, I can’t cook. Do you remember your first date? As clear as day. We went to a museum and an Italian place and she spent the night at my place. Have you ever kept a diary? It was something I kept trying to maintain throughout my pre-teen and teenage years but my interest would always fizzle out after a few weeks. I definitely tried to keep a total of more than ten diaries. Eventually I just gave up and started my first survey blog. Are you a daring person? Do you take lots of risks? Err in some contexts I’d say I am. I like trying out new food no matter how gross or potentially dangerous it is to eat, or being in unfamiliar places and dabbling in activities I haven’t tried before, that kind of daring. I don’t like breaking the rules though. Have you ever filed for divorce? No. Even if I was married and wanted a divorce, I can’t file for one where I live because it’s illegal. Do you have a doorbell? Yep, we’ve had the same one for like eight years. Do you ever feel like you are doomed? This isn’t a usual mood for me, no. Have you ever smoked dope? No. Do you ever experience dysphoria? No, not in any form. Which day of the week is your favorite? These days I don’t have a favorite because all days have been feeling the same...but back when I was still in school and life was ~normal I enjoyed Mondays because I wouldn’t have classes on that day. Mondays generally allowed me to both sit back and relax, and to also catch up on readings and other schoolwork that I wasn’t able to do on the weekend. Do you know anyone who has diabetes? Yes. How many DVD’s do you own? We have a bunch of them but I wouldn’t say it reaches the hundreds. What is your dad’s name? Edgardo. Do you like to dance? Only when I’ve had a lot to drink and only if a bar/club is super crowded, because then no one would remember me and how I dance. Do you drive? Do you have your license? I do, and yes. I just haven’t been able to drive since March because of Covid. Do  you believe in destiny? No. Have you ever been dumped before? Yup. It sucked, but ultimately I’d still rather be the dumpee than the dumper lol. How often do you experience diarrhea? Uhhhhh not too often, only when I’ve consumed too much dairy. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done before? I’ve done too many dumb things...but I think nothing’s been as stupid as the time I licked a battery that was leaking something that definitely shouldn’t have been licked. That is up there with the time I tried to plug a power cord that had been clearly gnawed at by my dog and had its wires sticking out in all directions...I was quite a ditzy kid. OH and I also once touched a clothes iron while it was plugged in and was therefore unbelievably hot. Boy did no one ever watch over me lol Have you ever dyed your hair before? Never. My hair has been a bit dry for the longest time and I don’t want to damage it further. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever dressed up as for Halloween? I’ve never dressed up as anything that would be considered strange I think. I always just dressed up as characters. Do you know how to dab? I guess but that’s so old now, anyone caught doing it these days would be a super cringey thing. Plus it was always annoying, so I never did it. How often do you go to the doctor or the dentist? Only when I’m not feeling well...which isssssss not very often. How often do you dust your house? Are you allergic to dust? My mom does it once every couple of weeks. I’m not. What’s the last good deed you’ve done? I assisted my girlfriend in crafting her resumé and gave her tips, advice, and my input whenever she needed them. [a-zebra-is-a-striped-horse]

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM:SPARKLING ROSÉ aka PINK BUBBLY akaA GOOD TIME!
Anita Klein, Angel Drinking Pink Champagne from the 'Ordinary Miracles' portfolio 2004, Screenprint with woodblock www.anitaklein.com
We hope y'all had/are having a great holiday. We love to celebrate here at Dandelion and when we do, we love to pop bottles of pink bubbly. There's something just so festive (and delicious) about it. So during this rosé season, consider drinking the fizzy version. Tonight our very own David Johnson will be manning the bar with 4 sparkling rosé from around Europe. You don't want to miss this one! It's gonna be a good time... plus as always cheese fromEastern District and bread from She-Wolf Bakery. DANDY LOVES YOU! XOXO
RAVENTOS I BLANC, CONCA DEL RIU ANOIA 'DE NIT' 2016
42% Xarel.lo, 37% Macabeo, 14% Parellada, 7% Monastrell
“Conca del Riu Anoia”, Catalunya
methode tradicional, 18 mos+ sur lies
Seriously Biodynamic & Certified Organic
This perfect pink bub is back! For years, it was my go-to wine for getting ready to go out, like the Beyoncé of pink bubbly, it always puts me in the right mood.
Dandelion's Jed says this abut it: “'De Nit'” means 'of the night' in Catalan, and that is definitely when I want to drink this. Everyone says the Monastrell is the key; for color and for kick. For me there’s a lot of soft, perfectly ripe and zesty pink fruit here, and a little citrus, draped over a well-structured backbone of high acid and fine, persistent bubbles. Nice volume and a clean, chalky finish. Unbeatable value at this price for those who value crisp over all things." $25
CAVES SÃO JOÃO ESPUMANTE ROSADO BRUTO 2016
40% Baga, 40% Touriga Nacional, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon
Bairrada DOC, about halfway up the coast from Lisboa, coastal, clay & limestone
De-stemmed and lightly pressed, methode tradicional, 3 mos sur lies
One of my 'no brainer' picks after a trip to Portugal... it was so well-made and well-priced like many wines coming from this region, but hard to deny given the nature of this wine; pink and bubbly.
Olé Imports says this: "Touriga Nacional gives intense rose petal aromas and Baga a bright red fruit character. Cabernet lends depth and herbal notes. On the palate, delicate and persistent bead makes for a silky, rich texture. Bright strawberry and red raspberry on the mid palate, complemented by mineral, white pepper and more floral tones. Racy acidity cuts a beam through the middle, making for a food-friendly sparkler." $21
LISE & BERTRAND JOUSSET EXILÉ ROSÉ PETILLANT 2016 VDF
Organic, old-vine Gamay on clay and flint with siliceous limestone in Montlouis sur Loire and Touraine
Natural: “living soils”, hand-harvested, native yeast fermented in neutral barrels, disgorged after four months
unfiltered, unfined, minimal-zero sulfur at bottling
I was surprised to hear this would be in the line-up tonight as Exilé is one of those bottlings that is as often out-of-stock as it is in-stock. A popular Pét-Nat (Pétillant Naturel), this is very dry with strawberry and meyer lemon notes. Not as "natty" as some Pét-Nats... clean and crisp, like many of the wines that hail from the Loire. Lise and Bertrand believe in "living soils" with high microbial activity, a "living" vine, and a balanced life between plants and animals. There is zero use of herbicides or pesticides across the 25 parcels ranging in age from 30-130 years for the oldest vines. Drink it ice cold on a hot day on it's own or with a light lunch of mezze. I'd suggest grabbing a couple bottles, as one usually isn't enough of this stuff. Get it while you can. $24
GD VAJRA N.S. DELLA NEVE VINO SPUMANTE ROSATO NV
50% Nebbiolo, 50% Pinot Noir
Calcareous soil in Roddino, where Barolo meets Alta Langa in Piemonte
Saigneé, metodo classico, on lees for four to five years
The Vajra family of Barolo are some of the most charming people I've met in the industry. And this is a fun wine; the ruby red color, the flavors of wild strawberries and orange rind, the richness yet dryness suitable for a serious meal, and named after a small chapel (“Nostra Signora Della Neve”) that is situated on the slopes of the vineyard. How much more charming can you get?
Here's what Jed says: "Apparently inspired by some apocryphal story about Thomas Jefferson popping by Piemonte and proclaiming Nebbiolo 'about as sweet as the silky Madeira, as astringent on the palate as Bordeaux, and as brisk as Champagne.' I personally love this wine and find the combination of these grapes in a Spumante unsurprisingly racy and fun, the garnet color exciting and the deep red fruit flavor a fun detour in the world of sparkling. Pair with hangar steak and fries." $40

MEDICINAL HOPS FOR HEALTH BENEFITS
Tumblr media
by Crooked Bear Creek Organic Herbs
While we know it best for the bitter flavour it imparts to beer, we celebrate hops as an increasingly valuable herbal medicine – and as the 2018 International Herb of the Year.
Step into a hop field and you will witness a gorgeous feat of herbal engineering. Whether flourishing in towering lush columns or luxuriously sprawled on garden trellises, Humulus lupulus displays strength and beauty. Pungent and sharp, hops’ unique bouquet creates an impression, while its remarkable medicinal properties have stood the test of centuries. It’s no wonder that The International Herb Association has chosen hops as 2018’s Herb of the Year.
Garden Growth
Many folks are surprised to learn that Humulus lupulus is a member of the Cannabinaceae family, a small group of aromatic flowering plants that includes the cannabis genus. Both share some similar sedative characteristics; however, hops have a much milder effect. Native to Northern Europe, hops was widely cultivated for beer brewing, with England’s southeastern region once the largest exporter. An introduced species to Scotland and Ireland hops now thrives in most countries throughout the northern hemisphere, Asia, and Australia.
Growing from a stout branched root, Humulus is a hardy perennial and vigorous climber, reaching at least 20 feet in a growing season. Its fibrous yet flexible stems contain downward-pointing bristles that facilitate its twining growth, placing hops in the category of “bine” instead of a vine. Rough and stalked, its dark-green serrated leaves are heart-shaped and often lobed. Lower leaves are opposite; upper leaves exhibit single or alternate leaf patterns.
Being dioecious {male or female}, both plants are needed for pollination. Female plants produce catkins or strobiles one-and-a-quarter-inch lovely, yellow-green oblong bracts with papery overlapping scales. Inside these bracts, glands hold powdery, golden pollen containing lupulin, the source of hop’s bitter character. Hops are harvested at summer’s end for brewing and medicine.
Hops prefer partial to full sun and deep rich soil, growing in Zones 5-10. Plant them in rows 7-8 feet apart, training the bines to climb lines or other supported structures. Cut back bines to the ground every fall after harvest. If you’re cultivating it for home use, be careful. Hops are very invasive.
Hops in History
The name Humulus lupulus is believed to originate from humus {rich soil} and lupulus, from the Latin lupus, meaning wolf. Its common name hops derive from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan, meaning “to climb.”
Scientists discovered its distinct yellow pollen in excavated prehistoric sites in Britain, revealing its use by ancient people. Hops grew in popularity over the centuries, in part because of medieval beer brewers, who began using the strobiles in the 19th-century. Before hops, brewers used “gruit,” a mix of bitter aromatic herbs such as mugwort, ground ivy, dandelion, and wormwood to flavor their ale. When brewers discovered that hops preserved the ale while imparting a pleasant flavor, they soon began to replace these other herbs. Rumours also circulated that some gruit contained hallucinogenic, aphrodisiacal herbs {perhaps due to the thujone content found in wormwood}, while hops tended to quell the male libido, making it “safer” to consume. By the 14th-century, brewers used hops almost exclusively. The rest of northern Europe adopted this practice, sparking the large-scale cultivation of hops that still exists today.
Hops were not without its detractors, however. Henry VI and Henry VIII both banned it, calling it a “wicked weed that spoils the taste of the drink and endangers the people.” Hildegard von Bingen wrote that hops were “not very useful in benefiting man because it makes melancholy grow and weighs down his inner organs.”
Despite its critics, hops were well-established for centuries as a medicinal herb, serving as a treatment for a myriad of symptoms. Medicinal beers or “draughts” were brewed with hops and other herbs to ease pain and settle nerves and digestion. In 1653, Nicholas Culpepper recommended hops for the “heat of the liver and stomach” as well as for skin infections and headache. In England, they combined it with bread to make a poultice for stubborn sores and ulcers. Pillows of hops were prescribed to guide some of our most distinguished world leaders off to dreamland, including King George III and Abraham Lincoln.
English and Dutch colonists brought European hops to North America in 1629, where Native American tribes were already using our wild species, Humulus lupulus var. lupuloides in warm poultices for an earache and dental pain, and to ease the discomfort of pneumonia. A tea from the blossoms provided sedation and relief from intestinal pain, fever, and urinary disorders.
The United States Pharmacopoeia {1831-1916} listed hops as a treatment for anxiety, but it was used for almost every ill: as an external poultice to relieve chest colds, internally for bronchitis, and inhaled for sore throats. Mixed with lobelia and thornapple {Datura stramonium or jimsonweed} it remedied constipation. As a tea, it relieved headaches, menstrual pain, indigestion, and cystitis. A hops mouthwash targeted thrush, and flannels dipped in a hot infusion served as a compress for mumps. More strangely, people applied hops in heated bags to the wrists and feet to sweat fevers and sometimes fried it in lard to apply if for breast pain.
Hops Stranger Side
For generations, folk remedies included hops. It was believed that placing a hops-filled pillow under your bed would alleviate rheumatism, and women wore an amulet bag filled with hops around the neck to prevent morning sickness. One interesting custom suggested visiting a hops vine for seven consecutive mornings and biting the end of a shoot to cure epilepsy.
Traditional lore associated hops with sleep, dreams, and protection against bewitchment. Often people blamed malevolent forces and night visitations for their interrupted sleep and nightmares, and hops-filled pillows yet again came to the rescue, sometimes combined with other sedative herbs to promote peaceful sleep and ward off night terrors. Mothers would wash nursery room floors with a strong infusion of hops to help fussy children sleep through the night. Burning the herb at night also served to ward off evil spirits. Mixing hops and calendula flowers in a pillow would grant the sleeper dreams of lucky numbers. Combined with other “dreamy” herbs like mugwort and lavender, hops could stimulate vivid imagery and promote dream recall. In Celtic folklore, hops were connected to the wolf spirit, used to both conjure and tame this wild energy.
Modern Medicine
If beer makes you sleepy, blame it on the hops. Its soporific, nervine effect is a go-to remedy when nothing else works for stubborn insomnia. Hops relax the whole nervous system, calming anxiety, stress, and even nervous digestive disorders, thanks to its components humulone and lupulone, which mimic the active chemical in valium. In 2013, a study from the Indian Journal of Pharmacology found that hops combined with valerian and passionflower had an equal effect on sleep latency {the amount of time it takes to fall asleep}, sleep length, and night-waking as zolpidem [AAmbien}. And it’s considered a safe short-term alternative.
Digestion:
Aromatic and bitter hops is a classic digestive remedy. Because it stimulates gastric juices, it promotes healthy appetite and assimilation, while its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties relax the smooth muscles to ease painful gas and cramping, especially when associated with anxiety. This bitter property also makes it an excellent hepatic, increasing the flow of bile and toning the liver, encouraging optimal function. Traditionally, a cold infusion of hops was taken one hour before a meal to activate absorption, and sherry steeped in hops created a superb vintage digestif.
Hops’ antibacterial and antiseptic properties have been a proven, time-honoured remedy in eradicating intestinal parasites in humans and livestock.
Hormone Balance:
A 2016 study conducted by the midwifery department of Tabriz University in Iran confirmed the traditional use of hops for hormonal difficulties. A randomised placebo control group used to evaluate Humulus extract on menopausal symptoms found that women taking the extract had significantly fewer hot flashes than women in the placebo group. Researchers concluded that hops can be an effective treatment for early menopausal symptoms.
Yet these hormonal virtues aren’t limited to women. Preliminary research in Germany discovered that the flavanoid called xanthohumol found in hops blocks testosterone, thought to be a contributing factor in the onset of prostate cancer, prompting further investigation.
Pain Relief:
Less well known are the anodyne {pain-relieving} qualities of hops. Myrcene, humulene, and caryophyllene, the primary terpine properties in the herb, work together to provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic action. Combined with valerian, hops has made its way into traditional cough syrups to alleviate pain and calm spasmodic coughs that can accompany colds, flu, and allergies. Hops may be used internally and externally as a poultice or compress to soothe the inflammation and discomfort from cramps {including menstrual cramping}, and the pain of arthritis, earaches, and dental issues.
Wound Healing and More:
Topically, a hops poultice effectively alleviates chronic skin inflammations, mild wounds, ringworm, eczema, and painful swelling. In 2014, researchers found that the bracts of the hops strobile contain antioxidants that inhibit the dental bacteria responsible for cavities and gum disease. Recently, hops has become a trendy addition to natural deodorants for eliminating odour-causing microbes.
Essential Oil of Hops:
Sharp, bitter, earthy, and the hints of citrus, essential oil {EO} of hops is intriguing. The terpines concentrated in the oil create a highly antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, sedating, and pain-relieving action. For inhalation, hops EO works best when diffused, calming nerves, insomnia, and respiratory issues. To boost its effectiveness on sleeplessness, apply several drops to your pillowcase. For topical pain relief or to alleviate skin irritations, add a few drops to a soothing salve, carrier oil, or unscented lotion. Because its fragrance may not appeal to everyone, hops blends well with citrus oils, balsams, pines, nutmeg [also excellent for insomnia}, and spicy scents.
Hops Flower Essence:
To those needing a boost of self-esteem, youthful energy, and balance, hops flower essence imparts its exuberance and robust “personality.” Hops renew enthusiasm for living, creativity, new ideas, and travel while keeping one focused and centred. Great for overactive, frenetic minds, the herb helps to corral scattered energy, providing a feeling of control. Hops flower essence is wonderful for adults and adolescents who experience chronic over-stimulation, but also fatigue caused by this long-term, jittery stress.
Cautions:
Pregnant and nursing women, prepubescent children, those with estrogen-sensitive diseases, and those on hormonal medications should avoid hops due to its phytoestrogen content. This herb is contraindicated in people suffering from depression. Hops may interfere with sedative medications and alcohol.
Throughout history, hops has been a venerable staple in home remedies. The next time you’re struggling with sleep, anxiety, or a case of nervous digestion, consider reaching for hops. This time-tested herb may just provide the relief you need.
In this recipe, we temper strong hops and dandelion with chamomile and warming ginger for a vinegar that you can use as a mild digestive bitter or add to vegetables and salads. Use malt vinegar for sweetness [hops and malt are a traditional combination} or apple-cider vinegar for a crisper taste.
1 part hops {to taste}
1 part chamomile {to taste}
1/2 part dandelion leaf
1/4 part dry ginger root
1/8 part dried orange peel
Malt or apple-cider vinegar
In a glass jar combine herbs and cover to top with vinegar. Cap with a plastic or glass cover {vinegar is corrosive}. Store in a warm place for one to five days, shaking often, and testing for desired strength. Starin and bottle. Keep in the refrigerator for up to a year.
In combination, hops and valerian create a powerful sleep remedy. The addition of passionflower and skullcap quiets overactive minds and relaxes the body. Use this during bouts of insomnia to help facilitate peaceful, restorative sleep.
1 part hops
1 part valerian root
1/2 part passionflower
1/2 part skullcap
Combine herbs in a canning jar of your choice and cover with your favourite 80- to 100-proof alcohol to the top and cover. Store in a warm, dark place, shaking often, for four to six weeks. Strain and bottle. Dose: 20-30 drops one hour before bed and again upon retiring. Repeat dosage if you awake during the night. Use for up to two weeks.
Try this for a bittersweet zesty cocktail, aperitif, or with mineral water. For extra zing, add a pinch of freshly grated ginger.
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup honey
2 Tbls dried hops
1 tsp fresh lemon zest
Combine water and honey over low heat until well-mixed. Add hops and lemon zest. Remove from the heat, stir, cover, and steep 30 minutes. Test; if you prefer a stronger flavor, steep longer.
Get creative with this craft pillow, using different fabrics. These pillows also make great gifts for loved ones struggling to find sleep.
2 parts dried hops
2 parts dried lavender
2 parts dried mugwort
1 part dried chamomile
1 part dried roses
1/2 part dried marjoram
1/2 part dried catnip
Combine these aromatic, relaxing herbs and spoon into a 4 x 4-inch pillowcase, muslin bag, or sock. Secure the open side and place next to your pillow at bedtime for calming sleep and pleasant dreams.

Here Is How To Detox Each Organ And Never Be Sick or Tired Again
Moreover, genetic derangements occur due to stress, spiritual shallowness, hormone disrupters, parasites, viruses, bacteria, Sugar, refined carbs and food-like products, pesticides, heavy metals, and the like., body and spirit are one. True medicine addresses all three areas.
The immune system is brilliantly constructed to be able to expel toxins with fevers, diarrhea, and vomiting. Yet, if a rather silent toxin is continually exposed to the system, it will lead to an autoimmune condition.
Autoimmune conditions are disorders in which immunity has gone awry, causing the body to turn on itself. The remaining “toxin” continues to alert the immune system.
Many autoimmune conditions are triggered by diet, as sugar, wheat, pesticides, gluten, heavy metals and genetically modified organisms cause distention and eventual pH changes.
Acid blockers like Pepcid, Nexium, Prilosec or diet can raise the pH higher than 3, which stops the release of pepsin. Pepsin is essential for protein breakdown.
These excess proteins leak through the permeable gut wall where it alerts the immune system and are detected as a foreign intruder. At this point, the body revs up immunity and inflammation ensues.
Inflammations are the defense reaction of the body and they are short- term, but they can lead to long- term chronic conditions.
These following are some instances of autoimmune conditions:
Blood-leukemia, lupus, hemolytic conditions
Nerves-diabetic & peripheral neuropathy
Muscles-fibromyalgia, muscular dystrophy
Thyroid-Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease
Brain-MS, autism, Guillain-Barré syndrome (caused by flu shot or a virus)
Bones-rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, polymyalgia rheumatica
Lungs-Wegener’s granulomatosis, asthma
GI tract/pancreas-Celiacs, IBS, Crohns, ulcerative colitis, diabetes
Skin-eczema, psoriasis, scleroderma, vitiligo
Immunosuppression, or depressing our natural immunity rather than finding the cause can be the answer to these diseases, according to allopathic medicine. Humira or Prednisone is an example. However, it is as counter- intuitive as it sounds.
Namely, in that case, we would hinder our body’s natural response to a foreign intruder, rather than trying to pinpoint that said intruder. Instead of eliminating the issue, we would put a band-aid that causes another side- effects.
Nevertheless, there are completely natural ways and methods which can help youdetoxify the entire body and strengthen the immune system in order to prevent diseases of any kind.
Here is how to detox all body organs and boost your immune system:
Diet
You should not consume wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, processed and fried foods, all kinds of GMO and focus on organic foods only. Many of these foods are not inflammatory in their unprocessed, natural states, but due to refining, pasteurizing and genetic modification, they are now disease- causing.
Therefore, avoid sugar, aspartame, MSG, trans fats, hydrogenated oils like canola or vegetable oil. Also, you should not indulge in excessive caffeine and alcohol.
It would be of help if you keep a food elimination journal.
On the other hand, you should consume healthy fats like coconut, avocado, omega-3’s, olive oil or nuts and seeds, and probiotics. Buy a Berkey filter or reverse osmosis filter to remove birth control, toxins, metals, and fluoride from your tap water. Alkaline diets can be of great help- they are low in sodium and high in potassium foods.
Liver cleanse
In order to pull out toxins, you can use burdock root, dandelion root, milk thistle, beets, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, turmeric or curcumin, fermented foods, and castor oil packs on the abdomen. The liver cleanse should always contain ornithine. The liver is also supported by some sorts of tea, such as tulsi and dandelion. Lugol’s iodine is also supportive of metabolism and liver detox.
Olive oil cleanse for liver
Drink carrot juice and eat tart green apples for a week, in order to soften your gallstones and to prevent them become dislodged during the detox process. Then, take a shot of olive oil with lemon juice and do a castor oil pack at night.
Kidney cleanse
Helpful herbs include horsetail, Flor-essence tea along with Uva Ursi capsules, Ginger, Goldenrod tincture, Vitamin B-6, Black Cherry Concentrate, and Vegetable Glycerin all help flush the kidneys. Extremely beneficial can be the following: lukewarm lemon water, magnesium, organic cranberry juice, apple cider vinegar, and Epsom salt baths. Moreover, note that you should stay away from pesticides as they cause kidney failure.
Colon cleanse
You should be having 2-3 BMs/day. Indian gooseberry or Triphala is a great colon cleanse. Coffee enemas are irreplaceable and double as a colon and liver cleanse. Drink plenty of distilled or fluoride free water, plant based organic diet, aloe Vera water, coconut kefir, ginger, garlic, fennel, bentonite clay or activated charcoal to bind & remove toxins, magnesium, and vitamin C.
Heavy Metals
Zeolite clay and activated charcoal are great chelators. Furthermore, cilantro, chlorella, high sulfur foods like cabbage, onions, garlic and brussels sprouts are amazing natural chelators. You can get a professional IV chelation. Also, avoid unnecessary vaccines which contain heavy metals.
What’s more, mercury is not safe, as it is a neurotoxin and can lead to autoimmune conditions, mood disorders, and mental degradation. Hence, you should see a biologic dentist who specializes in removing Mercury amalgams safely.
Parasites
Important ingredients, in this case, include wormwood, black walnut hull, cloves, as well as cinnamon, garlic, coconut oil, psyllium husks, bentonite clay and coffee enemas, which are also invaluable. Be sure to get organic coffee, distilled water, complete sterility, and lie on your right side, holding for 10-20 minutes.
Lymphatic system
This is the sewer system of the body, but it does not have a pump like the heart. Therefore, for a proper lymphatic movement, you need to be physically active, walk, practice yoga. Also, deep breathing, rebounding, and dry brushing are other excellent methods for the same cause. Lymph massage can remove toxins from the body through soft massage.
Skin
Slathering lotions, makeup, deodorants or fragrances contain parabens, BHT or other endocrine disrupters which can lead to hormone dysregulation, PCOS, endometriosis, and fibroids.
On the other hand, in order to stimulate your lymph system to eliminate chemicals and toxins, you should use infrared saunas, sweating, hot yoga, Epsom salt baths, and dry brush.
Also, you need to exercise and sweat a lot. Avoid any mainstream or synthetic toiletries and go organic. Furthermore, research suggests that vitamin D prevents breast and prostate cancer.
You need to take care of your own health and your body. In order to restore its strength, as well as its functions, you need to detox and help organs work properly. Therefore, remember to take care of yourself.

Love Your Liver And Live a Longer Life!
[ad_1]
When working well, your liver receives and filters 3 pints of blood a minute! A healthy liver removes these things from your bloodstream:
Dead and unhealthy cells
Micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and parasites
Toxic environmental chemicals
Cancer cells
Globules of fat known as chylomicrons
Filtered blood from your liver flows to the right side of your heart, ready to be pumped all over your body. Poorly filtered blood full of unhealthy fats and toxins can damage your heart and your immune system and cause you to age more rapidly.
When your liver malfunctions, the consequences can range from mild symptoms of sluggish liver, to life threatening conditions.
Symptoms Of Sluggish Liver Function
These are many and varied.
· Hormonal disturbances, menstrual problems, testicular problems, breast swelling.
· Food allergies and sensitivities
· Digestive problems such as burping, gas, bloating, pain.
· Skin problems such as itchiness, rashes, eczema, psoriasis.
· Chemical sensitivities (such as reactions to soaps, detergents, cosmetics etc)
· Sleep difficulties
· Eye problems ( sore, gritty eyes, vision difficulties, eye twitches)
· Problems with tendons and muscles (delayed healing, frequent injury)
· Headaches - especially pain at the top of your head and headaches that throb. Gall bladder related headaches are usually over your right eye, at your temples or on one side of your head.
· Irritability, anger, aggression, depression
Meet Your Gall Bladder!
When healthy, your liver produces 1 to 1.5 quarts of bile every day. The bile travels through ducts in your liver and collects in a muscular sac - your gall bladder - ready to be squirted into your small intestine after you have eaten fat or protein containing food. When stones, fats and cholesterol clog your liver and/or gall bladder you can produce less than a cup of bile daily. If the gall bladder becomes full of stones/gravel, you start to develop symptoms of gall bladder disease and even feel pain (gall bladder colic).
Bile Flow and Your Health
Bile is a viscous yellow, brown or green fluid and has three main functions in your body.
It acts as a strong antioxidant that helps to remove toxins from the liver.
It emulsifies fats that you eat so that they can be digested.
It de-acidifies and cleanses your small intestine.
Insufficient bile output means that many foods you eat remain partially or completely un-digested. Poor fat absorption can lead to poor calcium and fat soluble vitamin absorption. Deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to nervous system disorders, dry skin, peeling skin on the soles of your feet and weak flaky nails.
A bile-deficient stool is tan, orange-yellow or pale clay instead of the normal greenish-brown colour. Un-digested fat causes your stool to float.
Healthy bile that flows easily is a sign of healthy liver and gall bladder activity. Good bile production and flow is critical to your body's detoxification process.
Fatty Liver - An Emerging Epidemic
In the Medical Observer Journal, July 2004, is an article titled "Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is the new epidemic of liver disease facing the western world". Before the 1990's fatty liver disease was mainly seen in alcoholics and was rare in children.
Today fatty liver is recognized as the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests in the UK, US and Australia. It is easily diagnosed with an ultrasound scan and blood tests to check liver enzymes. The enzyme alanine amino transferase (ALT) is usually too high, which indicates liver inflammation.
A fatty liver is far from healthy - the liver cells and spaces that form the structure of the liver filter becomes swollen with fat so that they cannot function efficiently. These days it is not generally caused by alcohol but instead is the result of abnormal dietary and lifestyle factors such as
Eating too much refined carbohydrate from sugar and refined grains
Eating too much processed food containing hydrogenated vegetable oils or deep fried foods
Lack of good quality protein
Diets low in antioxidants especially vitamin C and selenium
Diets low in unprocessed plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, peas, nuts, seeds, sprouts
Lack of exercise, especially with a high carbohydrate diet
Fatty liver often leads to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In the USA, 2.6% of children have fatty liver, and some children need liver transplants because their fatty liver is so severe. 52% of obese children have some degree of fatty liver.
A healthy liver helps you to lose weight
If your liver is clogged and fatty, weight loss is difficult and slow even on a good eating plan. Your body needs to remove fat from your liver before it can break down other fat deposits. Once your liver is rejuvenated and detoxified, weight loss is easier and better still - the weight stays off!
Proven strategies to protect and repair your liver.
It's not hard to make slight changes to your diet and lifestyle - the liver responds well to nutritional medicine. Central to your liver regeneration program would be your diet.
Reduce carbohydrate intake - eat only un-processed carbohydrates such as brown rice, millet, whole grain pasta especially amaranth and quinoa pasta, natural whole grain bread that is dense and heavy (not the fluffy multi grain breads found in most supermarkets.
Avoid ALL sugar and refined grains and all processed foods containing sugar
Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, legumes and raw nuts and seeds.
Eat good quality protein regularly such as eggs, legumes, raw nuts and seeds - protein does not raise your blood sugar
Learn to like and drink fresh vegetable juices - such as a tasty mix of carrot, beetroot, celery, spinach, parsley, apple, ginger and lemon.
Take rice bran/psyllium husk daily to help reduce high cholesterol levels
Take good quality liver tonic supplements such as St Mary's Thistle, B vitamins, taurine, dandelion root, globe artichoke, lecithin, green barley and wheat grass powders, beetroot powder, vitamin C and selenium
Your liver can and will repair itself and grow new healthy liver cells and you can reverse fatty damage to your liver - and enjoy a longer, healthier life!

6 Ways To Improve Your Liver’s Function For Better Living
Naturopathic doctors recognize that one of the most important organs of the body, but likely least known by their patients for its function, is the super organ - the LIVER.
The liver has so many functions, many of which are not obvious to us physically, unlike other major organs (lung= breathing, or stomach = feeling full/hungry).
When one thinks of the liver, one should think of the term DETOXIFICATION.
What Does The Liver Do?
The liver is a super organ that pretty much cleans out our entire body. The liver is the largest reservoir (storing blood and iron) and filtering system for blood, ridding the blood of impurities, before it is pumped back in to the bloodstream.
It is a major secretory organ, producing and releasing bile, which is necessary for proper digestion and absorption of fat-soluble nutrients, as well as the excretion of waste products. As a metabolic organ, the liver metabolizes and stores our everyday basic macronutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
The liver also activates/deactivates medication, hormones (such as estrogen), and toxic environmental chemicals (such as pesticides, BPA, food additives), through three stages of detoxification.
The liver is essential for the production of antioxidants, molecules that protect the body from oxidative damage from the toxins listed above.
Many health conditions, such as mood disorders, cardiovascular disease, hormonal disorders, cancer, and inflammatory disorders are started by oxidation, highlighting the importance of liver function to our long term health.
How Does An Unhealthy Liver Impact Me?
There are a number of daily habits that can slow down liver function.  The consumption of large amount of saturated and trans fats, excessive caffeine, sugar, and alcohol use, and foods high in preservatives can overwork the liver, draining the liver of its resources to function.
Also, these types of toxins do not provide anything useful to regenerate and rejuvenate the liver. Our daily exposure to environmental pollutants will do the same thing.  Once the liver function is compromised, many people can experience a number of symptoms such as fatigue, skin eruptions, poor digestion, and headaches.
For example, a congested/sluggish liver can also be related to digestive problems due to the poor production and secretion of bile necessary for digestion and breaking down fat soluble substances; after many years of sluggish bile, that stagnant bile can form in to stones.
The skin is also an organ of elimination and when the liver is unable to process toxins, and metabolic by-products, they will find other routes to be excreted, such as through the skin, manifesting as conditions like eczema and acne.
Poor liver function can also increase cholesterol levels, as regulatory mechanisms to stop endogenous production become compromised.
What Can I Do To Improve My Liver’s Function?
As our exposure to toxic environmental chemicals increases, we will be relying on the strength and health of our liver to keep us healthy and energetic.  Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) we get through our diet are ESSENTIAL for our livers to function optimally.
If we continue to feed our bodies foods that do not possess any use for our bodies other than quick sugars and sustenance, and turn away foods that offer a melange of vitamins, minerals, our livers will not be able to keep up with toxic burden and our health will decline.
Along with a healthy, vegetable-rich diet, here are 6 ways to make sure you liver is functioning at its best.
Lemon water
It enhances liver enzyme function, encourages bile production, and is a good source of the antioxidant, vitamin C. Antioxidants protect oxidative damage of the liver by the very toxins the liver is required to process.
B vitamins
They serve as cofactors for enzymatic/metabolic processes in the liver, allowing the liver to function optimally. Food high in B vitamins include whole grains, legumes and of course veggies.
Dark Leafy Greens
Kale, dandelion greens, rapini, collard greens, swisschard, broccoli, are the superfoods for the liver. These vegetables exhibit a number properties that make them essential for optimal liver function.
They tend to be bitter, a taste that stimulates the secretion of gastric/digestive juices. The general rule of thumb is the more BITTER the veggie is, the BETTER for your liver.
They are rich in folate, vitamin C, vitamin K, magnesium, calcium and potassium, micronutrients important for liver function.  Lastly, leafy greens contain a rich amount of fibre, which takes some of the toxic burden off the liver’s back.
Castor oil packs
Applying castor oil over the liver with heat (instructions here) allows the oil to be absorbed through skin, and positively stimulates the liver function.
It also enhances immune function, and promotes lymphatic drainage, both important in detoxification.
Herbal medicine
Sometimes, the toxic burden on the liver may be larger than what you can handle from just a healthy diet.  That’s when herbs come in to play.
Hepatic herbs such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion root, Artichoke, Schisandra, Chelidonium, and Goldenseal, all have properties to protect the liver from environmental damage, repair damaged liver cells, as well as optimize liver function by directly enhancing metabolic processes of Phase I and II detoxification.
It is important to consult with your healthcare practitioner before using these herbs.
Eat and Be Clean
At the very least, makes sure to check out the Dirty Dozen, a list of vegetables and fruits recommended to be consumed organic due to the heavy pesticide use in their non-organic farming practices.
Also, make an attempt to eat hormone and antibiotic-free meats, and reduce your saturated and trans-fat intake by cutting out deep fried and processed foods.
Try to avoid plastic use, heavy-chemical household cleaners and body products - there are a number of natural, organic and plant-based cleansers on the market these days that a fantastic job.
This will reduced the daily toxic burdens on your liver, reserving it’s energy for chemical compounds you can’t avoid.
You can encourage optimal liver function by adding these few things in to your daily life.
It’s most important that we consume clean, low-processed, fresh, vegetable-rich diets in order to keep our health in this increasingly toxic world.
The key to health is maintaining optimal liver function as liver function affects every other organ in the body.
If you want to know more about how to clean up your daily lifestyle, and to optimize your liver function, book an appointment with one of our naturopaths and we can guide your way to a longer, healthier and energetic life.

Detox Teas Guide
What is Detox Tea?
Detox teas are combinations of tea leaves and sometimes herbs formulated to clear your body of free radicals and aid your cleansing organs such as the liver and kidneys. There are several detox teas that claim to aid in weight loss and increase your fat-burning power.
There are non-caffeinated “tea” blends of herbs and other flavors that can help you wind down before sleeping. It’s important to note that any form of detox works best when supporting a low-toxin lifestyle. Getting adequate rest, plenty of water, logical exercise and nourishing food is a primary factor in building a healthy body and living a robust life. A quality detox tea can aid in building a life in which you have the energy and strength to live as you wish.
Benefits of Detox Tea
Water: By weight, the main ingredient in any cup of tea is water, and water can help you 1) shed toxins out of your system by giving your kidneys a good flush 2) improve your digestion and reduce constipation 3) cut down on the amount of soda or other chemical-laden beverages you may currently drink 4) help you cut down on your caffeine intake when you replace part of your daily coffee intake with hot tea. 5) fill up your stomach with mostly water, reducing hunger pangs and aiding in weight loss. In addition, if your diet has been especially high in processed foods, full of sugar, salt or fat, unsweetened tea is a lovely way to reset your palate and make simply prepared, wholesome foods much more appealing.
Tea Leaves: True tea is made from the tea plant, an evergreen of the Camellia family. All naturally grown and processed tea has some caffeine and offers terrific antioxidant cleansing support to help your organs expel free radicals. White tea is very mild and is made from the first pickings off the plant. Green tea is the acidic beverage made from dried, unfermented tea leaves. Black tea is made from the same leaves following their fermentation.
For those who suffer from an over-acidic digestive system, the acidic bite of black or green tea may be too strong. White tea is a gentle source of antioxidants that offers a lovely foil for some herbal additions. Be aware that white tea can be more costly and is best purchased in small batches that you can refresh as needed.
Black teas are available from many retailers in a wide variety of strengths and with many flavor additives. Black tea has the longest shelf life of any bagged or loose leaf tea. Green tea is becoming more popular in the developed world, and can be purchased in the concentrate known as Matcha.
Herbs: There are several herbal additions to tea leaves that can support the cleansing organs, reduce the acid flavor of tea and aid in taking the edge off the caffeine naturally found in tea. Other herbal blends omit tea leaves altogether and are caffeine free.
The addition of dandelion root can aid in liver function. Ginger tea can help you feel fuller after a meal and cut down on cravings. Peppermint can soothe the stomach, and teas with berries can provide extra support to your kidneys.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Some teas that claim to support weight loss contain an herbal laxative called senna. This product can ultimately lead to dehydration and an electrolyte imbalance. If a sluggish gut has you feeling as though your digestive system is overloaded, a single dosage may help, but this is not a product that should be used on a daily basis.
There are some herbs in tea that do not react well with certain prescription medications, and the caffeine in tea can make some people edgy and irritable. Finally, many find green tea to be especially acidic and hard on their stomach. If you’re considering drinking Matcha for weight loss but don’t drink green tea on a regular basis, it’s important that you make certain you can tolerate green tea before trying the concentrate.
Another unfortunate side effect of the availability of detox teas is that too man people think they are a cure-all to fight the effects of the Standard American Diet. If your daily food intake is loaded with fried foods or highly processed foods, detox tea will have a limited impact. For these teas to really work on you system, you need to make the choice to clear away the unhealthy foods you’re currently ingesting so the teas can work more effectively.
Finally, sipping detox tea throughout the day may load your afternoon and evening with too much caffeine. Not sleeping is a great way to damage your immune system, limit your brain capability and may cause weight gain.
How To Take Detox Tea
The time to dose with detox tea should be considered with care as tea contains caffeine. Excess caffeine too late in the day can damage your sleep patterns and may actually lead to binge eating, which will not help in your weight loss goals.
However, there are herbal “tea” blends that contain no caffeine that can help you wind down at the end of a rough day and get in a better mindset for a night of quality sleep. Combine these teas with a bedtime routine that reduces blue light exposure; for example, if your herbal detox tea requirement is related to weight loss, cut down on screen time after 8 pm so that by 9:30 or 10 pm, you’re ready to drop off into deep sleep. Keep a dream journal for those moments of remembered REM. Consider adding a meditation practice at the end of the day to help you wind down and fall asleep easily.
If you’re using a detox tea to support liver function, consider making other lifestyle changes such as reducing your alcohol intake. This will reduce the burden on your liver, give the tea a better chance to make a difference to your body chemistry, and cut down on the calories you’re consuming when you drink alcohol.
For improved kidney function, combine your detox tea practice with more water during your workout and daily activities. Cut back on soda and other artificial flavors. Add lemon to you water during meals. Avoid salt and cut back on processed foods.
Those with the goal of weight loss with their detox tea might consider adding roughage to their diet to improve gut function and feel fuller longer. Adding raw foods to each meal can help you change your concept of fullness, and your detox weight loss tea can give you a morning caffeine boost for a more intense, calorie burning workout.
Things to Look for in a Good Detox Tea
Your tea needs to match your goals. Here is a good list of Do’s and Don’ts
Do: Start in small dosages to see how your body responds to this new herbal blend or tea grade Take care with your caffeine intake Maintain or level up your current water intake Monitor your physical symptoms for any averse reaction
Don’t: Overload on any tea that contains extra caffeine or Senna, an herbal laxative Use tea as a fix for a poor diet or excess alcohol consumption Add caffeinated tea to your evening routine
When working to improve your physical functioning, detox tea can be a good accessory, but it can never be a primary driver toward good health. A diet of french fries and greasy burgers can’t be corrected with tea, any more than a couch potato lifestyle can be corrected with protein shakes. Your body needs to move, requires plenty of clean water, and works best when fed lean proteins and roughage for growth and gut health.
