7. Deja Vu by Olivia Rodrigo
The gazebo had sat in the center of town since long before Josh was born. It was within reason to think that the town had simply been built around it. Around the gazebo, the old fountain a few streets over, and the field that now housed a playground. Of course he was over dramatizing it. Honestly, Josh hadn’t paid the gazebo much mind. Not until last year.
It was starting to fade in the way that memories did. Out with the old to make way for the new. But it wasn’t all gone. He still remembered going there for the first time with a girl. And every other time he went for the next few months, hoping to see that same girl but settling for passing notes. That girl who was pretty and smart and funny and
 weird.
Weird never felt like the right word. But it was the only one Josh could think of. He’d thought she was a little weird while they were dating but now, in the aftermath, it wasn’t the right word. Secretive maybe. The whole school thing was a bit of a hurdle. Although given Josh’s reaction he couldn’t necessarily blame her. If she’d been worried he wouldn’t like her if he knew what school she went to he hadn’t exactly proved her wrong.
A bell on a bike dinged as it went by him and Josh was jogged out of his thoughts. Zoning out on the side walk probably wasn’t the best idea. How did that even happen? He looked up and his eyes locked on the gazebo again. There was a boy, looked to be Josh’s age, sitting there on the steps. Josh was still a good distance away and also behind the boy so he could only see the back of his head. But he swore the clothes he was wearing looked like a school uniform. The only private school in town though was the all girls one. The Gallagher Academy.
Josh continued his walk through town, keeping the gazebo in the corner of his eye. Before his thoughts could get away from him again he stopped dead in his tracks. He couldn’t see more of the boy from that angle but he could see who he was with.
There, standing in front of the boy on the steps, was Cammie. She was exactly how Josh remembered her just now in a school uniform. He almost felt the urge to rub his eyes like she wasn’t real. She approached the boy on the steps as they had a conversation Josh couldn’t overhear.
He wondered what they were doing. It wasn’t often the girls came in to town and even less often they wore their uniforms out. It was also the middle of a school day technically. Did private schools have half days like public schools? He wondered if the two had just walked there or if Cammie had brought the other boy to the gazebo on purpose. And he wondered if she was thinking about him and their memories there too.
“Hey,” Josh nearly jumped at the voice and the feeling of someone come up next to him. Spinning around he came face to face with DeeDee. He must have looked a little out of it because she smiled and giggled at him. “You alright?”
“Oh. Yeah,” Josh said but even he wasn’t convinced. He put his arm around DeeDee and steered them in the direction away from the gazebo. He gave one last glance back at it. “Just deja vu, I guess.”

Closed off from the chaos outside, Jasper remained curled up in the bathtub, sobbing quietly over being rejected by her Diamond, over how nothing seemed to go right for her on Earth, and how she'd rather have gone back to Homeworld with the Diamonds rather than stay with all the other healed Gems. However, her misery wouldn't last any longer.
"Can you keep it down?! I'm trying to mope!" Jasper bellowed before she finally burst from the bathroom and marched on outside as she heard roaring from the beach. However, what she saw was a shocking sight. "What is that?"
"Is that you Jasper?" Lapis exclaimed as she hovered over to her orange frenemy. "Where have you been this whole time, you'd be pretty useful here but it seems like you don't want to!"
"I was busy being depressed, brat." Jasper snarled at Lapis. "Depressed over how my Diamond left me again. Now where is he? I want to give him a piece of my mind!"
"Funny you should mention that," Peridot replied loudly. "That monster thing is Steven!"
"You're kidding!" Jasper replied before she began sounding more insecure. "Please tell me you're kidding and that this isn't all my fault because he shattered me, I'm begging you guys!"
"Are you okay?" Pearl asked the big Quartz as Lapis brought Jasper over to the Gems. "You're sounding a bit more frantic than usual."
"Sorry," Jasper began, cringing at the thought of apologizing for something she did. "I just think this might be my fault, since because of me he went mad with power and shattered me."
"It's not your fault Jasper," Garnet said comfortingly. "I think we all might be to blame here. But it could be worse." The fusion followed up by kissing Jasper on the forehead, much to her disgust.
"Ew, what did you do to me?!" Jasper yelped in disgust as she harshly rubbed at her forehead before her vision began to distort. "Wait, what's-"
--
What Jasper then saw was not a beautiful seaside where a monster stormed about, but the remnants of Little Homeworld, now reduced to ruins in the middle of a desolate wasteland. As far as she could see, no life could be seen for miles, all except for a ragtag band of survivors finding their way in this apocalyptic future.
"Any sign of He Who Must Not Be Named yet?" the possible future version of Peridot, easily distinguished from her regular self through wearing Pearl's blazer, asked a young adult version of Connie.
"No, thankfully." Connie said as she looked through the skies with her binoculars. "But we gotta move at some point, he could be here at any moment now!"
"No, I say we stay and fight!" Bismuth declared. "I don't care if that's still Steven, you all seen what he did to our friends!" she added despondently. "Ruby, Amethyst, Pearl, Lapis, they're all gone now, all thanks to him!"
"Bismuth, you're being irrational." Sapphire calmed the blacksmith down. "But I do agree, there's no future I see where we calm Steven down and rebuild society."
"Well, let him come." Peridot stated tiredly. "Anything to be with Lapis again. I'm just so tired of fighting."
As the surviving Crystal Gems bowed their heads in shame of how powerless they were to save their loved ones, a hoarse, piercing laugh rang out, causing the four to take up arms against whatever foe crossed their path. That foe in question turned out to be Black Rutile, now without her cape and her visor showed many visible cracks.
"Ah, yes." Black Rutile said as her laughing turned into smirking. "Tired of something you barely even did to begin with. Maybe if you two weren't tossed to the side after the Cluster and reduced to a comic relief role, that little witch could've stood a better chance."
"Be very careful with what you say next." Connie threatened the Rutile by pointing her sword straight at her gem.
"Oh come now Mama-Say-Mama-Sah-Warren, I've lost people too." Black Rutile grinned while lowering the sword. "I've lost people too. Heck, you saw how Steven killed my old gang, and now he's after me too for all I've done."
"Well frankly, you had it coming for all that." Bismuth responded before turning her finger into a spike. "Now pipe down while I smash you to pieces."
"Bismuth, stop." Connie advised Bismuth. "I think she might be our best chance at surviving yet."
"Are you serious?!" Peridot shrieked in defiance. "It's all because of her that Steven went nuts, shattered Jasper, and then started rampaging across the planet and maybe beyond! All our friends and family are dead because of Black Rutile, and you think she might help us?!"
"We kept you around despite being a Homeworld loyalist." Sapphire told Peridot.
"So anyways, you might be our best chance at stopping Steven." Connie said to Black Rutile before sticking her hand out. "You in?"
"I'm going to assume that if I don't play by your rules, I'll pay with my life?" Black Rutile asked as she shook the human's hand.
"You bet." Connie answered. "When I found White Topaz before Steven shattered her, she begged me, with her last words that when I'd kill you, and make no mistake I will kill you, I'll give you the slowest and most painful death I can offer. And if you try and run away, I'm going to honor that promise."
As the handshake broke, Black Rutile was left completely speechless at both Connie's death threat and her late bodyguard having the audacity to wish death upon her. Before long, her silence was broken by another bout of maniacal laughter at Connie's expense. "Honor? Really kid?" Black Rutile declared. "You know we live in a society, or at least what's left of one, where honor is but a distant memory."
"You talk too much, you know that?" Sapphire snarked before she received another future vision, one that might spell their doom. "My stars, he's coming!"
While Connie, Peridot, Bismuth, and Sapphire prepared for the fight of their lives, Black Rutile looked up at the pink-colored sonic boom in the sky and laughed as a pink glowing figure landed on the ground in front of the rebels, the resulting impact causing more destruction to Little Homeworld.
Connie pointed her sword at their opponent, and her face softened upon discovering who it was. A pink, gargoyle-like monster whose size was equal to Bismuth's with massive horns on his head, scars on his chest forming a star, and a pink gem on his stomach.
"Steven?"
--
"So all that could've happened, because of me?" Jasper despaired as she was returned to the present day before dropping to her knees. "You were right, I am nothing but trouble."
"Okay, maybe you are, but you can still change." Amethyst rejected Jasper's notion. "And you can start by helping us stop him!" She then pointed to the pink monster, who took one look at Jasper and began to run away from her, no doubt the Steven inside it afraid to see Jasper again after killing her.
"Hey, get back here!" Jasper yelled as Steven tried to run straight towards Beach City.
"It's gonna smash Beach City!" Amethyst yelled. "We gotta stop him!" Without even a chance to be asked, Lapis summoned a water rope that she used to lasso Steven and drag him away from Beach City.
"So, is there any way to fix him?" Jasper asked.
"None that we know of so far." Garnet replied. "Not even the Diamonds could solve this problem."
"And now, I don't think there's anything we can do." Pearl declared.
"Anything, except surrender." Black Rutile declared as she, White Topaz, Aquamarine, and Eyeball dropped down from and stood before the group with an army of robots behind them. "Oh look, everyone is here! We got the insipid oppressors, their mindless sheep, and the sorry excuses for monarchs!"
"What's your game Black Rutile?" White Diamond angrily asked her former subordinate.
"It's quite simple really." Black Rutile replied. "Thanks to yours truly, all of you are now enemies of humanity for allowing this to happen!" She pointed at Steven. "And not just your little monster problem, but for all the horrible things you've done to this planet! And all while you were too busy crying like babies for the brat."
"Yeesh, someone likes to talk." Spinel murmured.
"Zip it, playmate!" Aquamarine declared. "Once all of you are out of the way, our master shall claim this galaxy as her own!"
"And maybe become one of the great Universal Lords!" Eyeball added.
--
All across the world, riots began breaking out over Black Rutile's broadcast. Picket signs were made, effigies were burned, and calls were made to eliminate the Crystal Gems' threat to humanity, even though not a single one of them knew of their existence before today.
In Washington, Theresa was showing Suarez a livestream on her phone of a group of people in Russia cursing in their native language of how the Gems deprived them of their ancestors' native land, leaving the president more depressed over the incident just as Wade strolled into the Oval Office.
"I just got off the phone with Prime Minister Sorayama." Major General Grant said. "He's saying the cabinet of Japan is ready to launch everything they've got against the monster and the Crystal Gems. They just need you to give the okay."
"No, we are not nuking anything!" Eduardo screamed, making the vice president and the major general jump a bit. "I know the Gems are good, kind people, but is it really true they're responsible for all that? And who's this Pink Diamond anyway?"
"I know they're your friends Mr. President, but what friends places the world in danger so many times, the only one to address that is another member of their species?" Grant asked. "It's your choice, sir. Your friends or your country?"
"He raises a pretty good point, sir." Theresa stated. "What's it gonna be?"
After wiping a few tears from his eyes, Eduardo turned to face the window behind him and made his decision. "Major General, tell Japan to call off the attack. Because we're doing it ourselves."
--
Back in Beach City, Black Rutile continued her speech to the Gems. "Look at all of this." She declared. "This is the chaos I've wanted to engender for so long. I wanted to build a new Homeworld order where you failed, but you chose Steven over your own people just because he's family." As Black Rutile continued speaking, she could feel her sanity begin to teeter off the edge more and more. "My purpose was to fight for the Gems, that is the sole purpose I was given. And now, I barely have any people left. That is what you have taken from me. That is what you have taken from EVERYONE!"
"That is where you're wrong!" Pearl boasted in reply. "You may think you're a misunderstood hero, but you're not! You're nothing more than a sociopathic, bloviating monster who only thinks that she's doing what's best for everyone! As actual heroes, we'll fight to stop you till our last breath, because we are the Crystal Gems and we'll always save the day!"
With that, Pearl took Amethyst's hand and the two merged into Opal, who pulled out her bow and fired an arrow at Black Rutile, who only moved her head an inch to the right to dodge it.
"Oh, fusions, eh?" Black Rutile snickered. "I guess we should even the odds then." She then turned to White Topaz. "Topaz, to me!"
"Right away my Rutile." White Topaz sadly complied and fused with Black Rutile to once again form Lepidolite.
"BEHOLD PEONS!" Lepidolite declared bombastically. "THE UNPARALLELED, UNIMAGINABLY ALMIGHTY LEPIDOLITE HAS FINALLY RETURNED!"
"Oh geez, she can fuse too?" Lapis snarled before turning to Jasper. "Hey Jasper, wanna join in?"
"Whatever." Jasper said and the two formed into the turquoise and gold-colored Malachite.
"Well, you know what to do Eyeball." Aquamarine said as she took the Ruby's hand and twirled in place before they formed Bluebird Azurite and unsheathed her ice cutlass & a flaming saber.
"Gems, now!" Garnet gave the order to attack and led the charge against the four rebels. However, Greg was feeling a little left out.
"Uh, what about me?" Greg asked as the battle began. "If only I could still make Steg." However, Greg quickly saw Lion rising beneath him and making the father ride on his back. "Oh, well that should suffice." Greg smiled before he made Lion gallop into combat. "WOLVERINES!"
--
Lepidolite roared as she threw a punch at Malachite, who caught it in one of her hands and fought back by launching a geyser at Lepidolite's face, sending her flying towards Peridot, who sent Bismuth soaring before the rainbow Gem smacked Lepidolite into the sand with her hammer.
"Feeling a little outmatched?" Malachite boasted with her arms folded.
"Child's play!" Lepidolite growled while summoning her claws and slashing Malachite in the torso. However, Malachite quickly grabbed Lepidolite by the arms and summoned Jasper's crash helmet to give her a nasty headbutt. "Topaz, what are you doing?" the Black Rutile half of Lepidolite asked. "Pull your weight and help me here!"
"But it's the four of us against all the Crystal Gems, the Diamonds, and even a Spinel!" the White Topaz half replied as Malachite began punching Lepidolite at rapid speed. "We're so outmatched here, let's just un-fuse and surrender so we won't have to risk our lives against such an unfair numbers advantage."
"Oh shut up!" Black Rutile yelled before Lepidolite received another punch to the face. However, Lepidolite just as quickly stabbed Malachite with her claws and slowly dragged them up her torso up to her face, hitting both Lapis & Jasper's gems and causing them to un-fuse.
"I got you guys!" Greg shouted as Lion leaped up and he caught the two Gems on his back. Lion then followed up with a roar aimed straight at Bluebird while she was fighting Opal, who was sent flying towards Spinel.
"Comin' at ya!" Spinel exclaimed before she began dribbling Bluebird like a basketball and flung her at some of Black Rutile's robot minions, who were firing at the Diamonds.
"Well, at least we tried with Malachite." Lapis said while getting up before she turned to Peridot. "Hey Peridot, wanna give it a shot!"
"Gladly!" Peridot exclaimed and raced over to her bestie.
"Wait, what?" Jasper asked as she watched her former cohorts fuse into Turquoise. "Since when can you do that?!"
"Don't ask, just fight!" Turquoise declared while forming a set of three swords out of liquid metal from the air to use, two in her hands and one between her teeth.
"Right." Jasper agreed as she prepared to charge. "Let's kill her properly this time."
--
Amid the chaos, Volleyball and Lemon Jade were left trying to escape harm with no idea what to do in battle, as they had never engaged in combat before.
"What are we going to do?!" Lemon Jade yelled while shaking Pink Pearl in her hands.
"I have no idea!" Volleyball replied. "I did fuse before, but it wasn't really for fighting an enemy." That was when she got an idea. "Wait, hold on!"
Volleyball ran towards Opal, who was busy shooting down Black Rutile's robots with her arrows when she felt something pulling down at her drape. "Oh, do you need something Volleyball?"
"Can I fuse with you Pearl so I can protect Jade?" Volleyball asked Opal.
"In the middle of something, but that's a definite possibility." Opal replied, unaware of the robot that was now hovering behind her.
"TARGET OPAL CONFIRMED. COMMENCE UN-FUSING." The robot droned and sent out an electric shock that forced Opal back into Pearl & Amethyst.
"Well ain't that a coincidence." Amethyst snarked as the two Pearls fused into Mega Pearl. "It's like she planned for this!"
"She planned for everything Amethyst." Mega Pearl responded before slashing away at robots that were cornering Lemon Jade.
--
Meanwhile, Turquoise was engaged in a swordfight against Bluebird Azurite, her metal katanas against Bluebird's ice and fire swords. "This is what you get for taking Steven and causing Lapis to leave me!" Turquoise yelled as she tried to stab Bluebird in any opening she could find.
"Oh, did kidnapping Steven hurt you that much?" Bluebird snickered. "I wouldn't have guessed judging by how you never show up." The smaller fusion quickly disarmed Turquoise and prepared to go in for the kill, but she had another thing coming.
"Got this from a manga." Turquoise grinned cheekily while cupping all four of her hands to her side and sticking them out, launching a torrent of water at Bluebird's face.
As for the Diamonds, they were busy protecting Steven from the robots by swatting them away. "These things are multiplying by the second!" Blue said while smashing drones to the ground so that the surviving Watermelon Stevens could dismantle them. "We have to get Steven somewhere safe so we can calm him down!"
"Everyone's trying their hardest, but Black Rutile just keeps coming back up." Yellow replied.
"Don't despair, we can win this!" White added, confident that they could still win the day somehow when she spotted something in the distance. "Wait, what are those?”
--
"Get a move on everyone, we're wasting daylight here!" Wade Grant barked to his men from his Humvee as the US Army advanced towards Beach City. As their goal was only to capture the Crystal Gems, they didn't need massive tanks, only jeeps, armored vans, and helicopters to get the job done. As the seaside town grew closer and closer, some of the army men felt the need to converse among themselves.
"So, do you think it might be sexist to capture a bunch of alien women?" one of the soldiers driving an armored van asked his companion.
"I'm not sure." The other soldier replied. "From what I've heard, they only look like women. They kinda don't have any gender since they're like, holograms projected by rocks. Holograms that happen to look female."
"Yeah but are there male Gems out there somewhere?" the first soldier continued. "How do they even procreate, if possible?"
"Beats me, they don't look like they have the goods, if you catch my drift." The second soldier wiggled his eyebrows. "Y'know, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more!"
"Yes, I catch your drift, no need to reference old-timey British comedy." The first soldier groaned before turning on the radio. "Sir, we're nearing Beach City. Permission to be the first to step out?"
"Permission granted Private Eric." Wade accepted over the radio as the two soldiers' van rolled up to Beach City, where its citizens were already evacuating.
"Excuse me, we'd like a word with the mayor of this town." Private Eric said as he and his partner stepped out.
"That's me, Mayor Pizza." Nanafua declared as she walked up to the pair. "Now what brings the military here?"
"We're on official business here Mayor Pizza." Eric stated. "Are you aware you have been housing aliens that have been threatening your planet regularly?"
"Oh, the Gems? They're pretty harmless." Nanafua laughed. "Though that giant monster is a bit concerning."
"Everyone step aside, Black Rutile has convinced us those Gems need to be placed under arrest." Wade stepped forward and prepared a special anti-Gem weapon made from the remains of the Destiny Destroyer. "We won't use lethal force against you all, but we strongly urge you to let us through if you want your planet to live."
The armed forces began marching towards the pink monster menacing Beach City as the townsfolk nervously stepped aside to allow them to pass. Though they treasured the Gems, they couldn't bear to be victims of yet another incident relating to them.
--
"Get back here!" Lepidolite roared as she chased Connie around and clashed her claws with the girl's sword. "Don't think you've won yet just because you've trained with that rotten Pearl!"
"That's what you think!" Connie yelled before she slashed at Lepidolite's arm, causing the fusion to yell.
"How can we be hurt just like that?!" the Black Rutile half of Lepidolite muttered before looking accusingly at no one in particular while beginning to destabilize. "Seriously Topaz, why can't you contribute?!"
"Seriously, can't you read my lips?!" White Topaz yelled. "I want out!" Suddenly, the two Gems split apart and fell to the ground. Black Rutile fell face-first and spat out some sand before glaring daggers at her bodyguard.
"Does it look like I care?" Black Rutile said. "Besides, we should be getting some back up real soon."
"Wait, back up?" Mega Pearl wondered before she got shot down by a weapon resembling a Gem Destabilizer and forced back into Pearl & Volleyball.
"Fan out, take down anything with a star!" Wade Grant gave out orders while his men zapped the Crystal Gems with their Destabilizer-like weapons, managing to take down Turquoise, Garnet, Amethyst, Bismuth, and Jasper before forcing them into a truck.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Jasper roared as she was herded like cattle into the truck with the other Gems.
"You're finally getting the Earth justice you deserve." Black Rutile declared smugly. "When this planet's government learned of your exploits, the leader tried to make an address that I hacked into and used to expose you to the world. Hope you enjoy confinement!"
"You won't get away with this!" Pearl yelled rebelliously before she, Volleyball, and one of the Watermelon Stevens were forced into the truck as two of the soldiers looked up at Steven and the Diamonds.
"What do we do with them?" Private Eric wondered.
"No need, I got this." Black Rutile bragged, taking Aquamarine's wand and using it to imprison the three Diamonds in a forcefield.
"Hey, you let them go!" Spinel yelled before she found herself getting trapped in the bubble as well, along with Lemon Jade.
"Uh, what is going on?" Greg asked before the major general walked up to him.
"There is no need to panic sir, we are simply following orders." Wade answered calmly. "Alright, move out! We're bringing them to Area 42!"
"Area 42?!" Connie exclaimed. "What are you going to do with them there?!"
"Just gonna ask some questions followed by deciding their fates, no big." Wade responded as he hopped into his Humvee and drove off while turning on his radio. "Gems have been captured, I repeat, Gems have been captured. Requesting a lift to Area 42 in Calivada, over."
As the military drove away with the Gems in tow, Bluebird Azurite picked up Black Rutile & White Topaz before she flew them away from the beach, the combined weight of the Diamonds, Steven, Spinel, and Lemon Jade in the bubble having no effect on her.
"So Crystal Gems," Black Rutile laughed evilly. "Who are you going to believe in now?!"
--
With the Crystal Gems in government custody, Black Rutile is just a few steps closer to victory. But what plans does she have in store for the Diamonds, what fate shall await the Crystal Gems at Area 42, and do White Topaz's loyalties still lie with Black Rutile? You're just gonna have to wait and see.

All I Want... 25 Days of Christmas Challenge, Day 13
Tumblr media
A/N: Yes, this is another update since I fell behind. ENJOY!!! Back to our regularly scheduled program later this evening.
December 6th
DeeDee swore off going out with her friends for a while. Phyllis was getting on her nerves and Beverly could only do so much. DeeDee didn’t even understand the hostility that was coming from her best friend. And now was not the time for her to be stressed out by shit she couldn’t control, like her best friend’s actions and reactions. So, it was time for a break and to focus on more important things, like her defense presentation.
She had chosen her PowerPoint background weeks ago. She drafted her presentation outline weeks ago. But she hadn’t yet put any of it together, even with all the time she spent in the library. Then again, the last time she was studying there, she found Erik’s note.
“Oh crap,” DeeDee grabbed her phone off the charger and saw multiple messages from him.
Prince Erik: Good morning Miss DeeDee
Prince Erik: I hope you have a good day and get some rest. You definitely need it. 😘
Prince Erik: Good night DeeDee
Prince Erik: Enjoy your day Miss DeeDee
Including a voice message, “Damn.”
VM: Sleeping Beauty
Do you know that you talk in your sleep? I learned quite a bit from you when you fell asleep mid-sentence last night.
Don’t worry, I won’t hold any of it against you...unless that is what you really want. Then what the lady wants, the lady gets.
I won’t tell you how long I stayed on the phone after you knocked out, but I’m sure that your phone probably died after I ended the call.
Whenever you get up, hit me up. I have some questions for you, pretty lady.
Later
After that eventful night out with Beverly and Phyllis, all she remembered was drunk dialing him, him answering the phone and then nothing else until she woke up late the next afternoon with a dead phone. She put it on the charger, but never checked any of her alerts and went right back to sleep until this morning.
DeeDee picked up her phone and went to her recording app. She didn’t want to flood his phone responding to his texts. And since he usually worked on weekends, she decided to send him a voice message instead.
She walked over to her patio door, opened the curtains and sat down at her desk. DeeDee opened up her laptop and pulled up all the documents she would need. It was time to get to work. Less than 2 weeks until D-Day.
---
Erik looked down at his phone for the umpteenth time that day and then walked the floor. It was weird, he hadn’t heard anything from DeeDee since he hung up on her Friday night. She was gone gone and yet, she still tried to talk to him. A sleepy drunk. He thought it was cute but he knew that hangover was gonna be a killer.
He hoped that she was ok. He still sent his usual text messages but he also sent a voice one because she said somethings that had him thinking. And it is said that ‘a drunk mouth speaks a sober mind.’ If that holds true, DeeDee laid herself bare in the most beautiful way, and yet she may not remember any of it. What a shame.
Erik moved to stand by the window of his office, while DeeDee’s words took up residence in his mind. He stopped focusing on his weekly reports an hour ago. His impression of DeeDee and the reality that each day his feelings about her being the one for him became stronger and stronger, cradled her very words to him from the night before.
A loud buzzing sound against his wooden desk, halted his wayward thoughts. He walked over and picked it up. It was a voice message from DeeDee. He unlocked his phone and opened it.
VM: Greetings From Louisiana
Good morning Erik,
I can’t believe you let me go to sleep on you the other night and didn’t say anything. Anyways, since I have no recollection of what I said, take it with a grain of salt. Please and thank you.
Sorry for not responding to anything yesterday. I just slept the day away in recovery. Nothing stronger than wine for me for a while.
I do hope you are free to talk tonight. I may not have much time over the next week or so as I prepare my final presentation for my dissertation. But I really enjoy talking to you and don’t want to miss out.
I’m probably rambling again. So, yeah. Just let me know if you have time and we can go from there.
Byeeee
Her voice always brought a smile to his face. He logged off his computer, grabbed his briefcase and locked up his office. He would have stayed there if she called, but since she didn’t, it gave him the perfect out. He could work from home and still talk to her until she needed to go.
---
DeeDee had just finished putting her talking points into her presentation file, when her cell phone rang. Erik. He must have gotten her message. She saved the file and opened the application.
“Hi Mr. Erik.”
“Hello Miss DeeDee.”
“I missed hearing that.” She said shyly.
“Oh, you did? Could have fooled me.”
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what? I’m not the one who said hi, some other stuff and then passed the hell out on the phone.” He shrugged even though she couldn’t see it. “I mean, I know I can put you to sleep, but that is not how I would do it.”
“You know what?” She started to laugh.
“What?”
“I can’t stand you.”
“Uh huh.” His voice was calm. “Lie again Miss DeeDee.”
“I’m not. I mean it.” DeeDee stomped her foot on the floor.
Erik laughed, “If you say so. But I think you feel differently about me.”
“Sir, remember I do not know what I said. I don’t remember anything after calling you.”
“And slurring my name?”
DeeDee groans, “So, that did happen?”
“Heeeeeeey Erik,” he mimicked her tone.
“Oh my god.”
“It was cute though. It lets me know you were thinking of me even when you were completely out of it.”
“I promised to call you when I got home.”
He paused, “You know what, you did honor my request to hear from you to let me know that you made it home safely.”
“Exactly.”
“So, it seemed like you had a very fun evening.”
“Nah, I wouldn’t say that.” DeeDee sighed, “One of my best friends who seemed excited for me to look for you, is now acting really funny towards me and I don’t understand it.”
“Funny how?”
“Well, can I share something with you?”
“DeeDee, you know you don’t have to ask that. If you want to tell me anything, I will listen.”
“Thanks E.” She curled her legs under her in the desk chair. “Remember how I said that I knew my career would take me away? You know traveling and experiencing the world and such.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I haven’t told anyone that I have applied for tenure-track positions far away from Louisiana.” She exhaled deeply. “I got upset when she said that I would never leave here, among other things. But at that same time, it hit me that I never told them that I wanted to leave. So, they have just always assumed I would be around for whatever.”
“I see. So, what about your other friend who was with you both.”
“Oh, she’s fine. They both want me to live life, but she is the only one who appears to really support it. So, I know she will be fine when and if I do leave.”
“You mean, when you leave.”
“From your lips, to God’s ears. I have gone through many interviews, but the waiting game is a lot for me to deal with.”
“I understand that. But just focus on your defense. The full-time position will come.”
“I know, and besides, there is always a postdoctoral fellowship too. And those look great on CVs.”
“Exactly. You can apply for one of those and work at another school until you find the school that fits you.”
“Yeah, that’s true. But Dr. O and Dr. Bell both think that I don’t have to worry and will get an offer my first time out.”
“I believe that, too. You are a bright woman, DeeDee. Any school would be lucky to have you.”
“Thank you, Erik.”
“You’re welcome.” Erik took a deep breath, “Speaking of Dr. Bell. I will be at her retirement party in a few weeks.”
“Really?” DeeDee squeaked into the phone, “I am so sorry that I keep yelling in your ear like that.”
“It’s ok. I knew to pull it away this time.”
“So, what does that mean?”
“Well, I was hoping that we could meet and you let me take you out while I’m in town. What do you say?”
“I would love that.”
“Good, so it’s a date?”
“It’s a date.” DeeDee giggled.

<<Previous Part
The time flew by and you saw Sebastian or Seb from now and then at Allison and Peter’s house, much to your dislike but you couldn’t change it either. You are the best friend of Allison and he was the best friend from Peter, there wasn’t much you could do than avoiding him. Somehow he managed to get in your way all the time and destroy your plans in his own way. He probably hates you as much as you do but that didn’t stop him, he just kept going with being an idiot. The first time you saw him again after their wedding was on the Christmas party from Allison where they also announced that she was pregnant which you were super happy with. You love kids and you would try your very best to be some kind of aunt to the little girl. Anyway on the party you brought a friend with you, his name was Steve and you just agreed to go out with you because he was being a nice guy and you thought that one date couldn’t hurt and Seb decided on this festive day to follow you around the house with a mistletoe.
He must loves it to make you uncomfortable all the time. At least you tried to have solid relationships he just brought each time a different girl with him or flirted around with girls. Time flew by again, the little baby girl was born and is named Sophie and now her first birthday stood before. Allison asked you nicely to make a few cupcakes, the birthday cake and some finger food. You even did the wedding cake for her so why not helping her out with that. Right now Sebastian and Peter are outside with Sophie to set up a few tables while you and Allison discussed a few things inside. You took the cupcakes out of the boxes while she already told you about Sophie’s doctor who could be single just because she didn’t saw a ring on his finger.
“Allison no! We already talked about this. Please I have my own ways ok?“ you said cutting her off.
“I just don’t want you end up alone (Y/N)..“ she replied and shrugged with her shoulders.
“But you want me ending up with Seb? or what about the guy who ended up being gay after our first date?or..-“ you wanted to continue the list but she already stopped you.
“Ok!ok..I got it.“ she hold her hands up in surrender.
“Let’s just stay like this, you continue making beautiful babies like Sophie and I continue making the delicious food for you.“ you winked in her direction while you took a few last details on Sophie’s birthday cake. After you put your food on a few plates, Seb and Peter came back with Sophie who recently puked Sebastian in his face. He cleaned his shirt and face at the sink while you hold Sophie for a while.
“Don’t worry Sophie your are not the first and last girl who puked in his face.“ you said while bounced he lightly in your lap.
“Haha very funny. Sophie can learn a lot more from me than from you.“ he said and dried his face.
“What? You are like an adult baby. She could learn more from a toaster.“ He just rolled his eyes.
Together you made a little speech about Sophie and shortly after came the babysitter from Sophie. They just named her the baby whisperer all the time because they insisted that she just has to take Sophie into her arms and she would stop crying and she was anyway invited to the Party. Her real name was Amy and she was a teenage girl and after she took Sophie with her to change her into a new pair of clothes you asked Allison about her.
“Really? She is the Baby whisperer?“ you asked nodding into the direction the young girl leaved the room.
“Yup seriously and if she would be older I would think that she could steal me my husband“ she mumbled back while Peter laughed and gave her a peck on her lips.
“Could you step away Seb? You smell like Baby puke.“ you said over your shoulder to him and continued watching Allison and Peter being a cute married couple. They are something like soulmates for you, they had their up and downs but at the end they couldn’t live without eachother.
“Oh really?“ he chuckled and came from behind you to hug you but you were faster to get away from him and giggled while he still tried to chase after you.Soon after the first neighbours, friends and family members filled the house. You managed to fill the food again from time to time until someone behind you which you recognized as one of the neighbours asked you something.
“Sorry Miss? Are you the caterer?“ she spoke from the couch while you noticed how the other women around her stared at you.
“Yes I am..and the best friend of Allison” you said while she patted you over to her to take a seat besides the women and her baby. They all joked a little around and complimented you about the food you made. You didn’t really like them because they are these typical housewives. They are all very nice but still a little too much for you. Later you learned that the woman's name was Deedee with her husband Scott. They all continued to ask you out about your life and which you guessed just to make nasty remarks later about it.
“Yes I am single“ you answered the next question while you tried to eat a few snacks. All of the women around just stared at you and mostly already judged you in their head.
“Well don’t worry..at least you make really good food“ she laughed sarcastically.
You just nodded and smiled at the ladies around you. At least they stopped asking about your life. You mentally praised for some kind of help and that came rather quickly because you were all called to gather around the table to sing Happy Birthday to Sophie while Allison came around the corner of the room with the cake in her hands. Peter filmed how the little girl smiled and giggled at her mother who blew the candles out. They did that from now and then to save the memories for them, Allison told you.
“Come on guys let’s take a photo with the godparents!“ Peter called as everyone stopped clapping and cheering. You and Seb stood on each side of the Sophie as the photo was taken. The day went by and after you helped to clean everything up you made your way towards your own home and literally fall in your bed and into a deep sleep. The next day you had to work again which you were wether thankful for. Over the last years you managed to open a little Shop with a little help. Everything was working out well for you there right know, you tried to expand the shop a little bit but that didn’t slowed you down, the customer kept strolling in everyday and under them was a handsome stranger who came by everyday for the last month and each time he ordered the same bacon sandwich with a black coffee and today you already saw him from outside walking to your door while you quickly got to the cash register. Normally someone else would do this for you but you wanted him to notice you and that was most likely the only way to get to know him in some kind of way.
“Let me guess. Black coffee and bacon sandwich?“ you smiled straight to him.
“Am I that obvious?“ he smiled and blushed a little bit which you found really cute. He had brown eyes, dark blond hair and is really handsome and likeable.
”Well I saw you for over the last month each day“ before you could even think about what to say you already did and cursed yourself mentally. Now he thinks I am his stalker, great (Y/N) you thought. At least he chuckled a little bit.
“How come you don’t wear a name tag like the others?“ he asked while he scratched the back of his neck.
“My name is (Y/N).” you smiled while you did his coffee and sandwich.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Sam“ he shook you hand over the counter. You gave him the little bag and he gave you the cash with a little tip and a card with his number on. You opened your mouth to say something but he was already at the door and winked one last time at you. After work you decided to take bubble bath and maybe even call Dr. Sam Nelson to ask him out. You looked for a few minutes at the card and struggled a little with yourself but now or never you decided. When would get a chance like that again and you clearly didn’t want end up alone. He didn’t pick up so you tought about leaving him a message.
“Hello? This is (Y/N) uhm- from the shop. You ordered a black coffee and a bacon sandwich. I hope you can remember because it would be-“ the sound of the beep disturbed your little speech.
“-sorry someone else is calling. Just call me back if you have time.“ you ended the call with him and took the waiting call.
“Hello?“ you asked.
“Am I speaking with (Y/N) (Y/L/N)?-“ a male voice asked you and continued.
“This is the New york police department. Allison and Peter Novak had you and Sebastian Stan as emergency contact in their phone list. We have to ask you to come here Miss (Y/L/N).“

HOW Design Live 2017: A Recap (Part 1)
by Maureen Adamo
HOW Design Live, the yearly gathering where designers can talk kerning, clients and the increasingly commonplace insanities of #creativelife and everyone totally gets it. As Stefan Mumaw likes to remind attendees in his networking event at the conference opening, “These are your people! This is your tribe.” And it’s true. The person next to you totally does understand where you’re coming from, whether you actually come from Miami, New York, Portland, LA, or the middle-of-nowhere-Kansas.
The themes of passion, productivity and voice took center stage from the get-go, creating a strong image of a world in which the designer-as-creator can thrive. If designers can relearn how to be themselves, if they can reach for more authenticity, it seems the experts and design leaders who spoke at HOW Design Live 2017 would be proud. In their words: Shake it up, get loud, be real, come back and play again tomorrow. As Sonja Rasula typified in her short presentation on embracing your inner weirdo, designers shouldn’t be afraid to bang the table sometimes, get passionately involved and be present: “NO! This font is better!”
This year, the conference programs were personalized — no cover alike for the more than 3,000 attendees, and each featured an inspirational quote from a past HOW speaker or thought leader. In the same spirit that the conference was framed by powerful words, I want to share the experience with a few insightful phrases I gleaned from this year’s speakers, starting with Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s sessions in the first of a two-post series.
Tuesday
Web Design Tools and Techniques for Print Designers
Jeremy Loyd and Ben Callahan, Sparkbox
“Every time you improve page load speeds, conversion goes up.”
Perhaps a dry start to the week, but wannabe slashies looking for a solid foundation in the crossover from print to web got a high-level overview of the techniques and processes Jeremy Loyd and Ben Callahan use in their work at digital agency Sparkbox. The masterclass session held an hour-and-a-half’s worth of info on everything from how to get projects started on the right note, with examples of kickoff exercises and research techniques (they use a lot of Google forms), to how they use a handful of tools and workflows to keep team members and clients on the same page, minimizing downtime incurred in rework and handoffs. Big ideas: Communicate the look of the project early and quickly, inform development with reusable templates and modules, and try pairing designer and developer in discrete work sessions to blast through snags and build a stronger team.
They offered collaborative notes on the conference at bit.ly/how2017. As of now, there are only a few sessions outlined, so any latecomers can add notes and help fill it out, or check back later to see what’s been updated.
Brian Collins
“Instead of minimum viable product, how about maximum f*#&@g love?”
This was such an amazing keynote on which to launch the conference and absolutely set the standard for all who followed. Brian Collins learned branding from his young exposure to the Catholic church, although it was essentially what could be deemed the bad old days of branding, perhaps. He experienced revival, in a close to literal sense, in seeing how religion was transformed into human connection, love and joy, when he encountered the uninhibited passion of the Chicago Mass Choir. Oh, and surprise! He brought them onstage — twice — and the whole world was filled with music and light. The lesson? We’re not designers of information, rules and regulations, systems or elitism. We’re designers of inspiration, of emotion, of hope.
You Gotta Make a Lot of Stuff Before You Can Make Stuff Like Yourself
Timothy Goodman
“I’d rather letter my own words horribly than someone else’s beautifully.”
For those who hadn’t been following the trajectory of the 40 Days of Dating co-conspirator and co-author (hello, anyone?), Timothy Goodman walked through how he became the guy who gets paid to Sharpie on walls. He said yes, took on editorial illustration to find his voice making tons and tons of work, cold-emailed a mentor or two when he got in over his head, and finally — the finishing move — politely ignored their advice when he saw the path to creating work that was uniquely his. Also, he’s over our collective obsession with hand-lettering other people’s quotes. Use your own words.
Wednesday
Out of Juice: How to Replenish Your Creativity Well
Terri Trespicio
“Commit to one thing instead of half-assing everything.”
The same time I was thinking it, my neighbor said it: “Yeah, that’s so me.”
Designers do have reputations for being a little distracted. There is so much shiny newness to elicit our attention and we’re ravenous consumers of culture, media, projects, hobbies and on and on and on. Which is great, because this informs our work. But it also can leave us a little empty when it comes to our own agendas, unable to leap at opportunity when it’s presented and broke when it comes to minting the currency of our craft, great ideas.
Pointing toward the work of the totally unpronounceable Mihaly Csikszentmihaly in his book on the subject, Trespicio thinks of creativity as a system, one that is used to transcend traditional ways of thinking, patterns or rules. It’s not a realm of mystery or exclusion, and as knowledge workers, everyone in business is entitled to think of themselves as artists.
In this light, she lays out some ground rules for how to keep the well overflowing, beginning with taking care of your vessel (that’s you, the physical body) with good sleep, diet and habits. I loved it when she said your mind is like a freshly fallen field of snow when you first wake up. If, like me, you’ve been searching for a metaphor to communicate the pristine quality you value in your late and early hours of the day, this one is perfect to try out on those who haven’t been getting the message about how disastrous you find morning headlines to be to your work. “Why would you let Matt Lauer trample on your snow?” Trespicio asks. Also, dream a little so you have some ideas in your back pocket in case anyone ever needs you to jump flat-footed into a project, like they do. Idle time is especially useful in cultivating those ideas, which Trespicio also finds incredibly important.
Slay Your Zombies, Slash Your Zigzags, Show Your Zing!
Sam Harrison
“Become unfamiliar with the familiar.” Sam Harrison, #HOWLive Invisible hulahooping with @zingzone pic.twitter.com/B4k9dRHrF6
— HOW Design (@HOWbrand) May 3, 2017
“Ideas happen at the speed of trust.”
If my back-to-back attendance of rut-busting creativity sessions means anything, it must be that it seems like it’s getting harder and harder to keep the juices flowing as everything else we’re asked to do takes greater precedence over doing our best work. You, too? Sam Harrison brought his wisdom to bear on my problem (and Terri was also in attendance at this session, so you really can’t get too much help in this area) with a prescription for keeping our minds loose and open: become unfamiliar with the familiar (take a peek at The Boring Conference to see what he means), avoid contempt for any idea before you start, don’t be afraid to play around with nonsense, leave technology behind every once in a while, stop self-limiting beliefs — and, for heaven’s sake, stop trying to be perfect. Perfectionism will hold you back; “Trying to make things perfect keeps you in place while others move forward.”
Malcom Gladwell, with DeeDee Gordon
“Do you want something bad now, or good a few weeks from now?”
Malcom Gladwell, who self-professedly has zero clients, proceeded to speak on behalf of designers and creative teams who deal with clients every day. While I think everyone in the room wanted to stand and slow clap when he said deadlines kill creativity, I immediately felt the cosmic vibration of every creative director in the world groaning in my head. And it was fantastic to hear him expound a tiny fable of the tortoise and the hare, in which the faster worker does get the job done speedily, but at a significant cost to quality, while the tortoise, who takes his time, submits a superior project in the end. The voice in my head this time was my own, though, and it said, “If only!” And I mean, if only we weren’t all feeling the pressure to be hares.
Gladwell says our world measures success by whether things are done on time, but asks what time has to do with creativity? To that end, he suggests we build diversity into our teams by working with people who are not only culturally diverse, but also diverse in performance traits. We shouldn’t be teams of only hares, or only tortoises.
I didn’t attend sessions in which this happened, but I got the sense from the #howlive Instagram posts (which were awesome) that his proposal attracted immediate commentary from other speakers who followed. And I think that was partly because it’s a very attractive idea that we can fight for more time, push back against clients and managers for the weeks or months we need to do better work — our best work, even. However, I could also feel the controversial thread of thought snap in the air a bit, because deadlines can often be the beauty queen in the creative pageant, and maybe we’re too comfortable with how often we say when the project is wrapped, “We did what we could with the time we had.” Maybe we’re letting all that pressure to be hares go too far?
Gladwell was hardly the only speaker to address how shortcuts and compressed timelines are affecting design, though. Pentagram’s Natasha Jen dropped the mic on the popularity of the concept of design thinking, describing it as a form of shorthand aimed at non-designers, which raises the question, “Why are non-designers being asked to design?” Jeffrey Zeldman, of A List Apart, looked at the sameness of the web, and pointed to web frameworks as a culprit, because they present fast and easy ways for non-programmers to learn how to make websites. He asked, “Which one of two possible websites are you designing?” Oh, and let’s not forget David Carson, who’d really like us to stop using flush-left, all-caps headlines for quick and easy, go-to typesetting. These people are asking us to spend more time on the work, not less.
So while it may not be an easy or popular notion, questioning our use of and practices around time and the deadline could be of value, lest we become design thinkers, rather than design doers.
Stay tuned for Part 2!

Steven Universe Alternate Future chapter 22: Pumpkin Patch (originally published on August 9, 2021)
AN: At long last, the homestretch of Part 3, which I have already dubbed the Tearjerking Three last time. And for our first entry into this trilogy, we finally get an update on the relationship between Peridot and Lapis, which I found to be done so dirty in Future as a Lapidot shipper. I mean, they didn't even interact with each other even when they were in the same episode together! Plus, Pumpkin just disappeared into thin air once the movie came along, leaving the only hint of where she is now are those similar gourd puppies from The Future. But enough griping, let's get my personal answer on what really happened, and maybe a big surprise that I no doubt have already spoiled on DeviantArt anyways.
Synopsis: Steven, Peridot and Lapis reminisce on the anniversary of Pumpkin's death.
Cast:
Zach Callison as Steven, Pumpkin
Shelby Rabara as Peridot, Squaridot
Jennifer Paz as Lapis, Laz, Zuli
Estelle as Garnet
Michaela Dietz as Amethyst, Ocean Jasper
Deedee Magno-Hall as Pearl
Uzo Aduba as Bismuth
Amy Sedaris as Teal Zircon
Jeff Bergman as Farmer
Featuring Billie Eilish as Turquoise
--
"Maybe I'll find myself smiling on that distant shore," Steven sang to himself while gazing at his watch as the oven timer counted down in front of him. "Maybe I'm not alone."
The timer beeped, notifying Steven that whatever he had in the oven was ready. After putting on some oven mitts and opening the oven, Steven pulled a pumpkin pie out and set it on the counter to cool. "This one is for you two, guys." He said before gazing at a nearby calendar that read June 7th. "I remember it like it was yesterday." Steven then began to reminisce on the aftermath of his visit to Homeworld.
--
A few weeks the Crystal Gems have successfully convinced the Diamonds to help them in healing the corrupted Gems on Earth, these Gems now needed somewhere to live. As far as Steven knew, there was no way they could expand the Temple to make room for all of them, and he's sure none of the newly healed Gems wanted to return to Homeworld, so the Crystal Gems decided that their only choice now was to build them their own little town. They had some basic ideas down, but all they needed now was a name.
"How about Peritropolis?!" Peridot suggested as she wrote down her choice of name on the whiteboard, with little sketches of her face surrounding the name for emphasis. "Pretty cool, huh?"
"How about something that won't stroke your ego?" Steven frowned at the idea.
"What about Barnstantinople?" Lapis proposed. "We are building it around where the barn used to be after all."
"Speaking of which, how's clean-up on that going?" Amethyst asked, looking out the window to gaze at the wreckage that was once Lapis and Peridot's barn house home. "I think some bits of it might be useful somehow."
"I say we put that on hold." Lapis stated. "That old barn caused just as much harm to Peridot and me as much as it did good."
"You serious about this?" Peridot asked her blue roommate. "I mean, we had so many good memories in there."
"Yeah, and a lot of those memories were you just bending over backwards trying to keep me happy." Lapis added. "I know you're still sad about me jumping ship and coming back with only a "Hey", but I still got things to work out, y'know."
"OK." Peridot said just as their pet Pumpkin opened the door. "Oh, hey Pumpkin!"
In contrast to Peridot being excited to see Pumpkin, the little canine fruit let out an exhausted bark before sitting down to nap, revealing wrinkles around her eyeholes.
"Hey, is your little buddy there doin' alright?" Bismuth asked. "I barely know a thing about the lifespan of organic creatures, but even I know she ain't doing so hot."
"Oh, I'm sure she's just tired!" Peridot assured Bismuth. "Just needs to rest, that's all!"
"Don't be so sure Peridot." Garnet advised the little Gem. "Pumpkin was brought to life with magic, which means she's probably lived longer than a pumpkin normally does."
"Just let her be happy Garnet." Pearl whispered into Garnet's ear. "She's already been through so much recently, and I don't think she can take anymore."
"You sure she's OK Dottie?" Steven asked Peridot regarding Pumpkin. "Nothing lasts forever, you know."
"Oh, she just needs some extra time in the Sun!" Peridot laughed. But despite her insistence, that wasn't how the story really went.
--
"Okay, a little to the left!" Peridot commanded Squaridot as the eye Gem Peridot levitated a lifeguard chair around while Bismuth, Ocean Jasper & Teal Zircon dug up the ground to build a swimming pool. "No, your other left!" she corrected herself. "Wait wait, your other OTHER left!"
"There's no such thing as an other other left!" Squaridot yelled and grumpily set the chair down next to where she was standing. "How's this?"
"Perfect." Peridot gave her fellow technician a thumbs up before turning around to see the Lapis twins walk towards the construction site. "Oh, I see our lifeguards wanna start early!"
"Why was it necessary for us to dress in these?" Laz wondered while modeling the red one-piece she was wearing. "I don't think red is my color."
"I don't know about you Laz, but I make this look good!" Zuli declared while flaunting her body in a matching outfit. "We look just like the hotties on Coast Patrol or Destiny from CPH season 3! By the way, where's Lapis? She's head lifeguard, so shouldn't she be out here with us?"
"She still has the suit, but she's not coming out because today is a special day." Peridot stated. "It's the anniversary of a certain something."
"Hey, I think I can see Steven's car!" Ocean Jasper cried out as she peeked out of the hole to find Steven disembarking from his Dondai Supremo and walking over with the pumpkin pie in hand. "And he's got a pie, maybe as thanks for our hard work."
"Naw, I don't think it's for us Ocean." Bismuth said just as Steven walked over to Peridot. "I think we should leave them alone for a bit and get back to work."
"Aw, but I wanted a pie!" Teal Zircon complained.
"I see you got the pie." Peridot said to Steven while gazing at the pie in his hands. "In case you're wondering, we worked on a new meep morp last night dedicated to her."
"Okay, why don't you show me?" Steven offered.
"I'd be happy to." Peridot smiled before turning back to everyone at the in-progress pool. "Keep up the good work everyone, I'll just be taking the rest off!"
"Yeah, take some time for yourself, Peri." Bismuth replied while Squaridot used her burgeoning ferrokinesis to lift the blacksmith out of the pool. "Just don't get too teary-eyed and fill up the pool early."
"Yeah, we're planning on filling the pool for our opening ceremony!" Teal called while struggling to get out.
"And I'm just gonna catch some rays." Laz declared as she sat down on a lawn chair, pulled some sunglasses over her eyes, and began sunbathing. However, her moment of peace was cut off by Zuli loudly blowing into her whistle and laughing.
"So, who's the pie really for Bis?" Ocean Jasper asked as she climbed out the pool before helping Teal and the two sat down next to Bismuth.
"You two got a moment?" Bismuth asked, and the Jasper and Zircon nodded in affirmation. "Well, the pie is actually for a friend of theirs."
--
Steven and Peridot kept walking away from the pool and eventually found themselves in front of the Little Homeworld house that Lapis & Peridot shared. It looked like a smaller version of the barn the two Gems once lived in, but instead of being decorated with a mishmash of items around the barnyard, it now looked like Peridot did most of the construction with bits of metal and advanced technology sprinkled onto a simple-looking two-story cabin.
"Hey Lapis, we're here." Steven called out to Lapis as he and Peridot entered the cabin to find Lapis napping on the couch with a manga on her lap and a red one-piece hanging on a clothes hanger nearby. "Lapis, wake up."
"Agh, don't go with her Pierre!" Lapis yelled as she woke up from her nap and rubbed her eyes to find Peridot & Steven before her. "Sorry you guys, I was trying on my lifeguard uniform, but then I got bored and decided to relax a little."
"You still remember what day it is?" Peridot asked while Steven presented his pumpkin pie.
"Yeah, I still do." Lapis declared sadly. "Want to see the meep morp we've been working on, Steven?"
"Sure." Steven replied before the two Gems took him upstairs to their shared bedroom & workshop, where a very large sculpture of Pumpkin stood, a big smile permanently etched onto the front beneath a pair of innocent eyes. "Almost like the real thing. Except bigger."
"Showing this to you makes me miss her even more." Peridot began to hold back tears. "I still remember how I coped with it too."
--
The groundbreaking ceremony of what would soon become Little Homeworld went quite swimmingly for the Crystal Gems, thanks to the support of their Beach City friends and the Diamonds. But amidst the rejoicing of a new beginning for Gems on Earth, there was some bad news that flew right under everyone's noses.
After Peridot marked the giant pit where the barn once was with Little Homeworld's flag, Pumpkin came strolling up to her green owner looking far wearier and more decayed than she did previously, a sight which worried them greatly. As soon as the ceremonies ended, Pumpkin was rushed back to the beach house.
"Please Steven, you gotta do something!" Peridot begged Steven while Pumpkin laid before the trio with a heavy sigh emitting from her mouth. "Pumpkin doesn't have much time left, surely you must have the solution like you always do!"
"I'm really sorry Peridot." Steven said regretfully. "As much as I would love to help you and Lapis out, Pumpkin wasn't long for this Earth anyways. Death is a perfectly natural part of life. It can be real sad and scary to watch someone you treasured so dearly go, but ultimately, their time will come all the same."
"So, she was going to die regardless?" Lapis said apprehensively while stroking the living gourd's rotting body. "I don't really see how this is possible since you did bring her to life with your powers, but I can deal with it."
"Well, I'm not!" Peridot objected tearfully. "It's not fair! I've already been through so much, why does the universe have to keep nailing the hammer into the coffin?!"
"Peridot, I know you're upset, but you gotta listen." Steven tried comforting his little green pal. "Death is completely natural, even if it's scary. I mean, my dad might die someday, and so might Connie. I'm not sure if I can die like a human though."
"Well, your race is different." Peridot declared. "None of you will ever know what it's like to live forever!" With that, she stormed out of the beach house to vent, leaving her two friends to worry for Peridot.
"I don't think I want to know where this is going." Lapis muttered.
"If it's anything like what happened to Peridot after you left Earth, I don't think she'll take it very well." Steven agreed.
--
Using a trashcan lid, Peridot flew far away from the general area of Beach City and into the countryside, where farmlands were very prosperous. Farmlands like the ones she and Lapis tended to together in the past, and the ones where Pumpkin was born. The very sight of all these fresh crops made her more miserable. What gave them the right to grow so healthy while Pumpkin looked so withered?
"Rackum frackum produce, I'll show you what for!" Peridot mumbled as she touched down in front of a pumpkin patch and swiftly got to work on destroying them. "You walked so Pumpkin could die!" she yelled as her green body became covered in orange pumpkin insides. "Why can't anything go my way for once?!"
"Hey, get offa my crops ya gremlin!" a farmer yelled at Peridot while stomping over to her with a pitchfork in hand. "You got any idea what it's like to work so hard on a great harvest, only for it to be ruined by a bunch of punks?!"
"No, but I'm sure you don't know what it's like to love someone only to lose them!" Peridot argued with the farmer, a retort that stunned him a little before he tried to look more sympathetic.
"Coping, eh?" the farmer said. "Look, you have every right to get mad, but that don't mean you can just stomp all over someone else's hard work! You gotta find better ways to vent, ya know!"
"Look, sir, I literally just ran away from home, I don't have time right now." Peridot coldly rejected the farmer's advice.
"Well, looks like you left me no choice." The farmer shook his head before reaching behind his back and pulling out a scary mask to frighten Peridot with. "BOOGEDY BOOGEDY BOOGEDY!"
"AAAAAHHHHHH!" Peridot screamed loudly before flying away from the farm on her lid.
--
As soon as Peridot returned to Beach City, she soared right towards Steven's house, where she found him making a grilled cheese sandwich, and began pounding on his window.
"Steven! Steven!" Peridot yelled from outside, getting the half-Gem's attention. "Let me in, I wanna talk!"
"You know you can just come in yourself." Steven suggested before opening the door for his green friend. "How have things been going?"
"I got an idea for you." Peridot stated. "How about in exchange for helping me with Pumpkin, I'll do something for you in return. Just name your price, I'll do anything!"
"Peridot, are you trying to bribe me into saving Pumpkin?" Steven asked. "Didn't I tell you earlier that death is a natural part of life?"
"But you managed to save Lars from death with your crying!" Peridot objected. "Why can't you do the same to Pumpkin?! Why does she have to die while so many other pumpkins have to live?!"
"Pumpkins?" Steven asked. "What other pumpkins?"
"I vented my frustrations by whaling on some farmer's pumpkin harvest." Peridot confessed innocently. "He didn't take too kindly to that."
"I think I know where this is going." Steven realized. "Five Stages of Grief, right? First was anger, now you're bargaining. Which means depression might not be too far behind." Just then, as if on cue, Steven's phone started ringing with a message from Lapis that he readily picked up. "Hello?"
"Steven, is Peridot there?" Lapis asked from the other end of the line. "Ever since she fled the house, I took Pumpkin back to our place, and now she wants to see us both before, you know."
"See what I mean?" Steven declared to Peridot, who was now on the verge of breaking down because now, she finally realized it was too late. "Do you want to see her?"
"Yes please." Peridot began to sob and hugged Steven tight. "Promise me that you won't ever leave too, Steven."
"I promise." Steven stated, hugging Peridot back.
--
Meanwhile, at the massive construction site that would soon become Little Homeworld, Lapis gently watched over the slowly dying Pumpkin, whose normally bright orange skin now had splotches of grayish-black, as she let out a weak yip. "Don't die yet, sweetie." Lapis assured Pumpkin. "Peridot will be here soon, I know it."
And right on cue, Peridot and Steven soared right towards Lapis on the trash can lid to see Pumpkin off one last time. Peridot raced as fast as she could towards the groundwork for her and Lapis's new home and tightly nuzzled her pet gourd, unaware that it wasn't in the mood for such a tight hug.
"Peridot, let her go! She's in pain!" Lapis yelled while prying the sentient pumpkin from Peridot's embrace, much to the green Gem's agony.
"No, please!" Peridot cried. "Just let me hold her!"
"I'm sorry Peri, but I don't think she can take much more!" Lapis argued while on the brink of crying just as much. "Pumpkin's already dying. She's so scared right now, so let's just-"
"Don't try to argue Lapis." Steven solemnly interrupted Lapis. "Peridot's already having a breakdown as is."
"I'm sorry about that." Lapis quickly apologized before she turned to Pumpkin. "Pumpkin, if you can still hear me, I want you to know that you and Peridot were the only things keeping me sane here, even when I ran off to the moon." She said to the dying fruit. "I can't thank you enough for brightening my day with your cute little smile, your barking, and all the days we spent playing together. Even if we find a replacement, none can ever replace you, little guy."
"You want a turn, Peri?" Steven said to Peridot.
"Fine, but I won't like it." Peridot sniffed loudly as she walked up to Pumpkin. "You were like an offspring to us, Pumpkin." She said quietly. "When I first saw your little carved face, those adorable stubby legs, it filled my heart with so much joy. Figuratively, of course, since we naturally don't have hearts. But every step we took together, every struggle, kept me grounded here on this crazy planet. Oh stars, now I won't know what to do now."
"Mah, mah," Pumpkin barked weakly with her last breath. "Mommy."
"I promise you," Peridot declared while her gem touched Pumpkin's forehead. "I'll never forget."
And with that, Pumpkin gently shut her eyes, allowing herself to pass on with her mothers and her creator by her side.
--
The funeral that followed was a private affair, with only the other Crystal Gems, Connie and Greg in attendance, and Pumpkin buried outside Peridot & Lapis's house. However, it was after the funeral when trouble began brewing. Just like when she had first begun living with the Gems, Peridot began hiding away in the bathroom for the next week to grieve the demise of Pumpkin and seemed resilient in refusing to come out, no matter how much they tried.
"C'mon P-Dot, open up!" Amethyst called while pounding on the door. "If you're planning on flushing yourself down the toilet again, let me tell you again, I tried that once and it didn't work."
"I think I know what to do." Greg proposed his idea and held up a boombox that began playing a song he knew she would recognize. "I look up to the sky, that's full of stars-"
"I'm trying to mourn here, leave me alone." Peridot despondently declared.
"I say we should respect her wishes." Garnet stated before she turned her gaze to Lapis. "Unless
."
"You think I should go in there?" Lapis asked.
"You are quite possibly Peridot's closest friend." Pearl agreed with Garnet.
"Closest friend?" Bismuth raised an eyebrow. "C'mon, we all know there may be something more than that!"
"Well, okay then." Lapis finally accepted with a shrug and slowly pushed the door open. "Wish me luck." She then said before entering the bathroom and closing it behind her. "You still in here?"
"So, they sent you in now." Peridot observed hoarsely. "I may have lost all hope, but I can still hear you know."
"They do say we're the closest." Lapis said before she sat down on the edge of the tub where Peridot had hidden herself away beneath a cocoon of Steven's bedsheets. "Come on now, get up and sit next to me."
"Okay, if it's you, I'll talk." Peridot succumbed to Lapis's offer and rose from her comfy shell to talk with her barn mate. "I'm sorry for worrying you all this past week, it's just that Pumpkin was basically our baby! Watching her die was like watching a child die!"
"Except the child wasn't human, it was a magical living pumpkin." Lapis remarked, which caused Peridot to glare at her. "No offense."
"But still, outside of our relationship, why did you volunteer?" Peridot wondered.
"Well, because I wanted to return the favor." Lapis answered. "Remember what happened after that boat trip I took with Steven and his dad?"
--
As soon as Lapis dropped Steven and Greg off at the docks following the boat trip gone wrong, she needed someone to lean on in her time of need. It didn't matter who, it could be any of the other Crystal Gems, or one of Steven's human friends. But right now, there was only one person, or rather Gem, that she could turn to.
Lapis could now see the barn in the distance, and as reluctant as she was to admit it, Peridot was the only one who could understand her regarding a certain Quartz. "Peridot, are you there?" she called for her green housemate. "I'm back!"
"Lapis, so glad you could make it!" Peridot exclaimed while racing out of the barn. "I discovered that I can move spoons with my mind, I made some decent progress on my Camp Pining Hearts essay; though I'm still stuck on the poutine theory, and-" However, she realized a bit too late what Lapis was feeling. "Is something the matter?"
"Steven and I found Jasper during the trip." Lapis said morosely. "She wanted to fuse with me again because she says I changed her. And to be honest, I think it was kind of my fault. Unfusing with Jasper drove her mad and I even said I missed taking all my frustrations out on her!"
"Lapis, are you serious?" Peridot gasped in alarm.
"Yes, I'm serious." Lapis declared as her eyes darkened and she turned away from Peridot. "Go ahead, run off and live with the Gems again so you don't have to be another one of my victims. If Jasper says I'm a monster, then I guess I really am one, especially after the way I treated you when we first moved in together."
"Okay Lapis, I don't want your garbage right now!" Peridot yelled, briefly breaking Lapis out of her funk with the almost exact words she described the tape recorder she broke. "I can see you're very stressed out. You want to scream so bad, to hit something, to let your anger out! But whatever you do, don't lose it on other people."
"Wh-what are you saying?" Lapis asked.
"I'm mostly just repeating stuff I read online," Peridot admitted. "I think what you need is a way to vent healthily, maybe on a perfectly defenseless object."
"Like what?" Lapis raised an eyebrow in suspicion.
"One second!" Peridot exclaimed while walking into the barn and coming back out with an alien plush wearing a top hat and bowtie that she gazed at with a solemn expression. "I'm so sorry my sweet." She said softly to the stuffed toy before presenting it to Lapis. "Go ahead, hit it as hard as you can. Or maybe something else violent, whatever."
"Okay." Lapis sighed as she began feeling around the toy for something to do before grabbing at the bowtie and ripping it off the alien's neck, causing some stuffing to spill out of the hole she created. "Whoa."
"So, how did that make you feel?" Peridot asked as the alien dropped from her grip.
"Good." Lapis muttered in awe of what she just did. "I feel so much lighter now, like a real adrenaline burst."
"See, as I told you." Peridot smiled happily. "You just needed healthier ways to relieve stress."
"You're right." Lapis agreed when she got an idea. "Now, how about I try something a little heavier?" She then glanced over to a nearby pickup truck and used the water from Peridot's makeshift pool to lift it into the air. "How about this?"
"Yeah, I think that could work." Peridot nervously replied before Lapis suddenly tossed the truck into the air. "NO WAIT, THAT'S A LITTLE TOO-" she screamed and covered herself to avoid getting hit, but the truck instead crashed into the wall over the barn entrance, creating a massive hole that the vehicle filled. "Hm, guess I was wrong."
"Well, if we're gonna be living here together, why don't we make ourselves at home?" Lapis laughed and put a hand on Peridot's shoulder.
"Yeah, I think this is a good start." Peridot agreed while wrapping her arm around the taller Gem's waist and the two began brainstorming ideas for remodeling the barn.
--
"Yeah, I really was there for you back then." Peridot realized with a grin. "And from then on out, we were so close."
"You bet." Lapis replied and cupped Peridot's face in her hands. "Let me be a shoulder for you to cry on this time. I love you Peridot."
"I love you too Lapis." Peridot responded happily before the two began to kiss, and their gems started glowing as they began to fuse into a tall, slender Gem with turquoise hair, dark cyan hair in the shape of a maple leaf, Peridot's glasses, Lapis's top with a bright yellow star on it, a skirt with a bronze ribbon around her waist and dark teal sandals with bronze accents.
The new, accidental fusion of Peridot and Lapis looked around the bathroom and gazed down at her four hands. Feeling around her body, she felts the gems of her components on her forehead and back before coming to a shocking realization and let out a loud, confused scream. "AAAAAHHHHHHHH!"
"Is something wrong?!" Steven exclaimed as he barged into the bathroom to discover the fusion before him and started screaming as well, but this time in joy. "AAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
"AAAAAHHHHHHHH!" the new fusion continued screaming and covered her face in alarm at Steven as the two continued shrieking at each other.
--
"But was that fusion really an accident or maybe something more?" Peridot asked while she, Steven, and Lapis walked outside to her and Lapis's garden in their backyard.
"Maybe a mix of both?" Lapis answered with a shrug. "I mean, we did kiss each other after saying "I love you" to each other, but the fusion part came out of nowhere."
"Still, we were all so happy to see you two fuse at last." Steven said. "Words could not describe how long I've been waiting for that moment."
"I couldn't shapeshift, so I just assumed I couldn't fuse as well." Peridot observed before they happened upon a makeshift tombstone that read 'In memory of Pumpkin. A good girl to the end.' "You know, all this talk reminds me of a song I've been writing for the past few days. It may seem a little short and I pulled from other sources, but it's the best I got."
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Lapis suggested eagerly. "Sing for us."
"Yeah, we never heard you do a solo before either." Steven agreed with the ocean Gem.
"Okay, if you insist." Peridot declared before she cued a nearby Robonoid tending to the garden to start playing jazzy music, and she started to sing. "My sweet little pumpkin o' mine, a living gourd with a smile so fine. You made us smile with your bark, your stem's like emerald, and filled with seeds of gold. You were our most beloved work of art."
Almost as if Pumpkin was coming back to listen to Peridot's eulogy, many similar living produce like additional pumpkins, some gourds, and squashes, began coming out to watch. "You saw fields of corn, sandy beaches too. In summers so warm, it was just us and you." Peridot continued singing. "And I think to myself, what a wonderful pet."
Soon, Lapis began to join in on the song as well. "Though your time was short, like all things are." She joined Peridot in singing with her own solo. "We'll always think of you, when we look at your star."
"Our sweet little pumpkin of ours," the pair finished the song and embraced each other. "You were a wonderful pet."
With that, the two Gems fused into Turquoise, this time on purpose while surrounded by living Cucurbita, and smiled.
"Thank you for coming today, Steven." Turquoise said to Steven. "It really means a lot to us."
"Nothing to it girls." Steven smiled while rubbing his finger on his upper lip.

So ends the first installment of the Tearjerking Three. In comparison to what will come next, I'm pretty sure this will be tears of happiness at these two dorky barnmates basically becoming an item at last and even fusing too (also, I totally took Turquoise's design from @artifiziell, she makes some amazing stuff, go check her out). But next time, we move on from someone being dead for real to someone being dead to Steven. Can you guess which one? Oh who am I kidding, if you watch me on DeviantArt, I basically spoiled everything after this.
