Nightmares could only bother you while you were sleeping; if you stayed awake, then you wouldn’t have to deal with whatever horrors your mind wanted to show you. Hence despite it being far too late for a boy his age to be up, Matt stubbornly refused to leave the table where he was studying the Book of Shadows and comparing it to one of the books Bobby had given him. Matt refused to let any demon catch him off guard again, so he was doing his best to study and memorize the different types of creatures they might encounter and how best to kill them. At least, that was what he had been trying to do, but for the past several minutes he had instead been reading the same line over and over again as he fought to keep himself awake. His head kept nodding forward, coming dangerously close to hitting the book he was reading a few times, and Dean must have noticed it because suddenly he felt the man lifting him up into his arms.
“‘m not tired...” The witch protested, betrayed by the yawn he let out immediately afterwards. Even his body seemed determined to prove him wrong, with Mattie curling up against Dean’s chest and letting his eyes drift shut. The sound of Dean’s heartbeat lulled him to sleep, and the boy was breathing deeply and steadily before Dean had even reached the bed, fingers curled in the fabric of his father’s caretaker’s shirt like a security blanket.

These two are actual menaces to society and need to be immediately detained. Fools. Buffoons.

@decimatlas asked: “ i’m not leaving you. not ever. ” from dean
Dean was doing his best to comfort him, and Matt appreciated it. Really, he did. But even as he was making that promise, the witch was shaking his head, unable to actually hear those words without a rush of painful memories flying through his head. "Don't... don't say that. You can't promise me that. Not with what we do every day." Sure, Dean might not abandon him, Matt had spent enough time with the hunter to believe that. But there were other ways to leave someone behind, and with how many close calls they had, it was stupid to make promises like that. "Somethin' could happen. Somethin' can always happen. What if we're not lucky one day? One of us is too slow? A monster or demon is too strong? It happens."

@decimatlas gets this because this wouldn’t fit in an ask box
Tumblr media
A sharp intake of breath and Matt was sitting upright in bed, catching one of his books that came flying off the shelf as his powers lashed out before he got them ‒ and his breathing ‒ under control.
Padding down the hallway, Matt rubbed the sleep from his eyes as his body carried him on autopilot. You'd think he'd have moved past something as childish as nightmares, even at 17, but no. No, even as he made peace with old horrors, new ones would always follow to take their place. Thankfully, he had found a way to help cope with them, which usually involved curling up with a certain hunter until morning. Dean didn’t make a big fuss about it either, which Matt appreciated, and the witch had long outgrown the worry that he was bothering his dad. In fact, sometimes, Matt thought Dean was just as happy about it as he was. One of those unspoken agreements the two of them had.
He had already opened the door a crack when he abruptly froze. This wasn’t like when they were at Bobby’s, or even camped out in a motel. Dean wouldn’t be alone, he’d be bothering Lisa as well. While nothing about the woman made him think she’d be upset with it or anything, it still made the boy pause. He already felt weird enough living in her house, to wake her up in the middle of the night, along with Dean, because he had a bad dream? No... No, he wasn’t going to do that. Instead, Matt closed the door as quietly as he could and made his way back to the bathroom where he could splash some water on his face. He... He would deal with it on his own, he wasn’t a kid anymore.
Standing in front of the sink, Matt ran some cool water over his hands before rubbing his face to banish the remaining images from his head. Dean’s voice from behind him gave the witch a minor spook, jumping lightly before he looked at the man through the mirror and just shook his head. “Nah, I.... Nah. Couldn’t.”

@decimatlas asked: “it’s my job to protect you.” / to matt from dean
Tumblr media
His jaw was clenched, the expressions on his and Dean’s faces actually mirroring each other as they stood in the room, both of them clearly trying to stay calm. It was their most common fight, ironically a result of how much the two cared about each other, but now that Matt was older, it seemed to be happening more and more frequently. The Leviathans had proven tough, impossibly strong, and seemingly invulnerable to all their weapons. The only thing that seemed to slow them down was Matt’s witchcraft, something he had been pushing for weeks now but Dean stubbornly refused to hear it, and it had resulted in another confrontation between the two.
Facing away from Dean, Matt froze when he heard those words, the only indication he had even heard the man was the way his shoulders tensed up. Objects around the room began to shake as his emotions roiled within him, and the witch stated taking deep breaths to reign in his telekinesis. ‘it’s my job to protect you’ ‒ the words played over and over in his head before Matt spun around, his eyes sparkling like emeralds as he strode over to his father. “And what the fuck do you think my job is?!” He shouted, fists clenched at his sides as he fought to stay in control. “I am not some helpless kid anymore, Dean, it’s my job to look after you too. Someone has to!” Running his hands up and down his face, Matt took another breath and the tremors in his body and the room gradually subsided. When he next looked at the hunter, his face was pleading instead of angry, and Matt fought back the panic attack that had been starting in his chest. “You told Sam once that if he went and got himself killed, you’d have to be the one to bury him. Well what am I supposed to do if something happens to you? I’ve already had to stand back and watch you die once, I refuse to go through that again. I just- I can’t, okay? I can’t. You’ve protected me since I was a kid, and I love you for that. Just please, please, let me return the favor. I can do this.”

@decimatlas asked: “ ⭐️ dean and matt ” to get a headcanon
Being half witch and half whitelighter, Matt is all but immune to demonic possession. He purposefully didn’t tell Dean about that so that the man would go with him and sign off on getting him an anti-possession tattoo when he turned 16 so he could match his dad

@decimatlas asked: “ “That is genuinely disturbing.” Dean to Matt ”
Tumblr media
“.... it’s Green Day.” Matt looked at his father like the man had grown another head (which, considering their lives, wasn’t that far outside the realm of possibility) and crossed his arms. “Maybe if you listened to any music that was made in this century... Speaking of which, I don’t complain when you play the same 12 tapes over and over again.” And people wondered why he continued to invest in quality headphones and was very protective of his mp3 player. Giving Dean a mock salute, Matt grinned at him as the bridge of the song came up.
“Sieg Heil to the president Gasman Bombs away is your punishment!”

@decimatlas continued from here
Almost as soon as he snapped at her, Matt felt bad. Eden was just trying to help, despite how hopeless it was seeming, and truthfully he was glad she was there. He might have gone insane if she wasn't.
Right, like he hadn't done that a long time ago.
It was his own frustrations that were getting the best of him; if Matt wanted to solve this, he needed a level head. Pacing the room a few times, he used to opportunity to breathe and release his anger, gently putting down some of the other books he had been going through and rubbing his face. He wasn't taking care of himself, he knew that, but how was he supposed to do things like eat or sleep when every day seemed to bring Dean closer to losing his fight with the Mark? None of them were really sleeping anymore...
It's a curse. It can be broken.
Eden's right, of course, and he knows it. All curses can be broken, they just needed to figure out how, before it consumed Dean entirely. He was just running out of ideas on how to break it and he felt like they were missing critical pieces of information. His family had always said that with curses, how they came about was the most important part when it came to breaking them. Dean had gotten the curse from Cain, Cain had gotten it from Lucifer, but why had Lucifer given it to Cain in the first place? As part of his pact, yes, but why? What possible reason could he have had to curse Cain with immortality when he had already dammed him to Hell? There were parts they didn't know yet, and Matt hated working without all the pieces when it came to things this important.
Coming to a stop in front of Eden, Matt nodded softly. "You're right, I'm sorry." Cathartic though it may be, breaking stuff wasn't going to get them any closer to answers. So, Matt cleaned up his mess and leaned against the wall, closing his eyes as he tried to calm the emotional storm inside him and come up with a plan.
He would fix this. He would fix this. He had to fix this.
"Outsourcing..." He repeated, lips curling up into a smile. Yeah, who else could he ask about this- Matt's eyes snapped open, and he looked at Eden, staring at his book, and rushed forward. "Eden, you're a genius!" Setting the Book of Shadows on the table properly, Matt took a step back and looked up at the ceiling. "Please, come on. There's gotta be something in here. Something to at least point us in the right direction."
Okay, he probably looked ridiculous, and he wouldn't blame Eden if she thought he had snapped. But as Matt waited with bated breath, suddenly the Book opened and started flipping through pages on its own, coming to a rest on a spell Matt hadn't even really noticed. "To Summon Living or Dead Witches for Help..." He read, feeling the first surge of hope he'd had in weeks.

@decimatlas it's 3am and we're dead
Matt allowed Dean to use him as the "cute kid" in order to pick up women and in exchange Dean would get him something he wanted. By doing this, Matt was able to get a portable CD player (later iPod), a pair of nice headphones, and his own laptop.
