Mad Men s1e9 "Shoot" really is That Bitch
#betty resenting the birds for flying after she loses her one shot at making a name for herself because of don#but she believes that SHE has been rejected so she swallows her sadness and pretends she never wanted it in the first place#the parallel between her trying and failing to reclaim agency through her beauty while peggy is secure in her agency#while being called ugly by the entire office for daring to gain weight#and obviously the knowledge of *why* shes gaining weight really drives home the theme of the episode#which is that finding agency through the roles we're expected to play in society often traps us further#peggy finds success through unexpected routes (copywriting) while trying to play the role people tell her she fills only holds her back#betty is genuinely good at and enjoys modeling in part because she has been forcing herself into a very specific role since birth#but at the end of the day even as a beautiful white woman at the height of societal value ur only ever a bargaining pawn for the men#but instead of even being able to see this clearly she assumes shes been rejected and internalizes it#deciding that being a housewife is preferable because she cannot handle any rejection of her beauty which is the one pillar of value she has#built very deliberately for herself#and hinges her entire identity upon#god what a phenomenal episode#j rewatches mad men
