Because the assumption is that we are the sum of our memories and nobody likes to think about the subscription thing (even though you're right on that front, we don't own a magical computronium DHF containing device like this is Altered Carbon or Eclipse Phase).

The argument is that -your memories and personality- are the crew. The hardware that it's running on (the meaty, fleshy bits) are the pieces of the ship of theseus. The truth of you is in your memories and personality, not your physical incarnation, because the assumption is that there is no immortal soul.

And we're gonna be debating this right up to the point well past the time we actually do figure out a way to make digital humans I'm sure.

My own personal take on it is that I'm in absolutely no rush to upload myself, but maybe when this body is old and worn out and if there's an option for it that doesn't involve becoming an eternal debtslave/digital curio in the asset portfolio of a megacorp it might be cool :P At that point I'm gonna die anyway, who cares as long as it's not going to, as you put it, further burden my grieving relatives.
