On the morning of March 1st we asked a question:

As we noted in our post, the ITIC recently published a report showing that over 50% of the journalists that the Hamas media office says were killed in the Gaza Strip between October 7th 2023 and February 18th 2024 were affiliated with terrorist organisations, including 44 from Hamas and 19 from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
THE BBC, JOURNALISM AND TERRORISM
“As we have previously observed in relation to BBC coverage of the topic, the safety of journalists while doing their job is of course an important issue. So too is the abuse of journalism and journalists by terrorist organisations and repressive regimes.
The blurred lines between journalism and terrorism in the Gaza Strip have long been on record but the BBC nevertheless has to date shown no interest in denouncing the exploitation of journalism by cynical terrorist organisations or in drawing a line between legitimate media organisations and those promoting the interests of terrorist organisations or terror funding regimes.”
Little did we know that the answer to our question had already been provided.

The CPJ’s “open letter” reads as follows:
“We, the undersigned, stand united with Palestinian journalists in their call for safety, protection, and the freedom to report. For nearly five months, journalists and media workers in Gaza – overwhelmingly, the sole source of on-the-ground reporting from within the Palestinian territory – have been working in unprecedented conditions: at least 89 have been killed in the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, more journalists than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year. These journalists – on whom the international news media and the international community rely for information about the situation inside Gaza – continue to report despite grave personal risk. They continue despite the loss of family, friends, and colleagues, the destruction of homes and offices, constant displacement, communications blackouts, and shortages of food and fuel. Journalists are civilians and Israeli authorities must protect journalists as noncombatants according to international law. Those responsible for any violations of that longstanding protection should be held accountable. Attacks on journalists are also attacks on truth. We commit to championing the safety of journalists in Gaza, which is fundamental for the protection of press freedom everywhere.”
In the Gaza Strip, however, not all “journalists are civilians”. Some – like the two whose terror links the BBC tried to downplay in January – are active members of terrorist organisations.  Others are employees of the media arms of terrorist organisations. Obfuscating that fact clearly does nothing “for the protection of press freedom”. 
Nevertheless, one of the people who chose to sign the CPJ’s “open letter” is Deborah Turness, the CEO of BBC News. Readers may recall that in October of last year, Turness attempted to do damage control following criticism of BBC coverage of the war initiated by Hamas on October 7th.
However, as we see, Turness’ commitment to providing BBC audiences with “trusted journalism” does not include recognition of the fact that her profession is being abused by people who function both as journalists and terror operatives.
The BBC’s participation in this CPJ campaign, which whitewashes the issue of the terror affiliations of some journalists in the Gaza Strip, is particularly relevant given that – as noted by Jeremy Bowen in a recent Radio 4 item – the corporation is currently using local freelancers to produce content.
Bowen: “The only journalists in Gaza at the moment are Palestinians who were there on the 7th of October and haven’t left. Many Palestinian journalists have been killed. Many others, including my colleagues from our BBC office in Gaza, have got out with their families. The ones left behind, whether by choice or because they haven’t had permission to cross into Egypt, are extremely courageous. We work with freelancers inside Gaza who liaise with a talented young Palestinian producer in our office in Jerusalem. [
] We would be precisely nowhere without them.”
Indeed, BBC audiences have seen reports from the Gaza Strip that are credited to journalists who are not present on the ground but fail to clarify who actually did the filming and interviewing.
With the BBC now having made it clear by means of Turness’ endorsement of this CPJ letter that the issue of journalists engaging in terrorism is not one of its concerns, some difficult questions obviously arise regarding Turness’ claim to provide “trusted journalism” to the corporation’s funding public.

More than 100 staff members at the BBC have accused the corporation of giving Israel favourable coverage in its reporting on the war on Gaza. A letter sent on Friday to BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Chief Executive Officer Deborah Turness criticised the broadcaster for providing “favourable coverage to Israel” and failing to uphold a “basic journalistic tenet” when holding Israel to account.  The signatories included 230 people, among them 100 anonymous BBC employees, as well as media professionals, journalists, actors and academics.  “The consequences of inadequate coverage are significant. Every television report, article and radio interview that has failed to robustly challenge Israeli claims has systematically dehumanised Palestinians,” the letter, first reported by the Independent, said. The journalists stressed the BBC’s “high level of trust” as a taxpayer-funded public broadcaster, warning that its Gaza war coverage could undermine its "impartiality" and puts its "independence at serious risk". The signatories urged the BBC to implement editorial commitments such as “reiterating that Israel does not give external journalists access to Gaza; making it clear when there is insufficient evidence to back up Israeli claims; making clear where Israel is the perpetrator in article headlines; including regular historical context predating October 2023; and robustly challenging Israeli government and military representatives in all interviews”. Since Israel's war on Gaza began last year, Israeli forces have killed 183 Palestinian journalists among more than 43,300 killed overall.

NatWest boss Dame Alison Rose has resigned hours after admitting she had made a mistake in speaking about Nigel Farage’s relationship with the bank.
She had been heavily criticised for being the source of an inaccurate BBC report about Mr Farage’s account at Coutts, which is part of NatWest Group.
The announcement came just hours after NatWest said it had full confidence in her in continuing to lead the bank.
Dame Alison had admitted a “serious error of judgment”.
In a statement released early on Wednesday morning, NatWest Group chairman Sir Howard Davies said: “The board and Alison Rose have agreed, by mutual consent, that she will step down as chief executive of the NatWest Group.
“It is a sad moment.”
In a separate statement, Dame Alison thanked her colleagues “for all that they [had] done”, saying: “I remain immensely proud of the progress the bank has made in supporting people, families and business across the UK, and building the foundations for sustainable growth.”
Following her resignation, ex UKIP leader Mr Farage told the BBC it had taken a long time for Dame Alison to resign.
“The first rule of banking is client confidentiality. She [Dame Alison] clearly broke that.”
He said that anybody in a more junior position at the bank would have been “out of the door”.
Dame Alison had come under mounting pressure from Downing Street, the chancellor and other senior cabinet ministers to resign, with the BBC told there were “significant concerns” over her conduct.
Mr Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party and Brexiteer, first reported in early July that his account had been closed and said he had not been given a reason.
The BBC reported that it was closed because he no longer met the wealth threshold for Coutts, citing a source familiar with the matter. It has since apologised for its inaccurate report.
Mr Farage subsequently obtained a document looking at his suitability as a Coutts customer.
The 40-page document flagged concerns that he was “xenophobic and racist”, and also questioned the reputational risk of having Mr Farage as a client. It said that to have Mr Farage as a customer was not consistent with Coutts’ “position as an inclusive organisation” given his “publicly stated views”.
Mr Farage, had highlighted what he said was a discrepancy between the BBC’s apology on Monday from CEO Deborah Turness, which said the BBC had gone back to the source to check the information, and NatWest’s statement on Tuesday. “There is no way, if the BBC went back for a second time to confirm the story that they would not have checked that it was the balance of my account that led to that commercial decision,” he said.
Confidentiality key
City minister Andrew Griffith said it was “right” that Dame Alison had resigned from NatWest, which is 39% owned by the taxpayer.
“This would never have happened if NatWest had not taken it upon itself to withdraw a bank account due to someone’s lawful political views. That was and is always unacceptable,” he said.
Freddy Colquhoun, investment director at the wealth management company JM Finn, told 5 Live’s Wake up to Money the resignation was inevitable: “I think as soon as you lose the confidence of Downing Street, who is also a major shareholder, then something needs to change quite quickly.
“Confidentiality, it is one of the major pillars of trust between the clients and the bank.”
Dame Alison said she had not revealed any personal financial information about Mr Farage, but admitted she had left the BBC’s business editor Simon Jack “with the impression that the decision to close Mr Farage’s accounts was solely a commercial one.”
She said she was wrong to respond to any question raised by the BBC about the case.
Paul Thwaite, Natwest’s current chief executive of its commercial and institutional business, will take over Dame Alison’s responsibilities for an initial period of 12 months, pending regulatory approval.

Channel 4 News is facing demands from an MP and former minister to explain its alleged use of “gagging orders” against women staff in equal pay, discrimination and victimisation cases.
Maria Miller, a former culture secretary and a campaigner against the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), says she is aware of several cases in which present and former employees have been silenced after alleging discriminatory treatment at work.
Miller has written to Deborah Turness, chief executive of ITN, which makes Channel 4 News, asking for more details and calling for change. Turness is soon to leave ITN to become head of news at the BBC where women have fought for pay equality.
“I have been approached by a number of whistleblowers with concerns about the use of NDAs in the Channel 4 newsroom,” Miller told The Times. “My letter asks about the apparent use of NDAs to cover up wrongdoing and raised issues of pregnancy discrimination and workplace bullying.

“I’m keen to see the misuse of NDAs tackled in the next employment bill. I was involved in the recent pledge to stop the use of NDAs at universities.
“That is a step in the right direction and if it’s good enough for universities, it’s good enough for everybody else including broadcasters who report on these issues and help shape our culture. We need to stop the use of NDAs to cover up discrimination and wrongdoing.”
Lawyers frequently use NDAs and confidentiality clauses in the settlement of employment cases to commit employees to secrecy. They are controversial because of their misuse in some cases to suppress details of wrongdoing including sexual harassment, discrimination and racism.
The government consulted on their use in 2019 after Theresa May, then prime minister, raised concerns that they were often being used “unethically”.
Channel 4 News’s journalists have broken stories about the misuse of NDAs in the past. In 2018 the news division made an acclaimed documentary about the ordeals endured by women required to sign NDAs after working with the disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.
Former Channel 4 News journalists and staff said confidentiality clauses had been used to settle contentious cases including one in which women discovered they were being underpaid after returning from maternity leave.
One former staff member signed a secrecy clause after accepting a financial settlement and agreeing to drop allegations of victimisation and sex discrimination. She said she raised her grievance in 2020 after ITN’s then chief executive, Anna Mallett, told staff she wanted to create “a culture where people feel confident to speak up”.
The woman said: “Public promises were made about company values and I believed them. But speaking up proved to be a traumatic, self-destructive act. I have lost a job I loved, a job I excelled at, my professional reputation has been damaged and I have been isolated and gagged.”
One former journalist claimed that a female colleague signed a confidentiality agreement after being “forced out” of her job. They said: “Her reputation was shredded. People who worked with her were asked to fill in a capability survey which was then used to make sure she was on her way out.”
Another insider said: “There is a problem with NDAs but it’s a broader issue than Channel 4 News, it’s an ITN issue.”
ITN said: “ITN does not and has not dealt in ‘NDAs’ with employees. As is standard practice in all industries, ITN uses settlement agreements to document the mutually-agreed resolution of a dispute or to facilitate the exit of an employee from the business on agreed terms. Confidentiality provisions are standard, representing a very small part of the overall agreement reached and are often at the specific request of an employee. To go into the details of individual cases would clearly be a breach of confidentiality.”
Are NDAs buying silence?
Non-disclosure agreements hit the headlines in 2018 when Zelda Perkins, Harvey Weinstein’s former personal assistant, broke the terms of her contract to reveal details of the sexual harassment she experienced while working for the film mogul.
A year later NDAs were back in the news when it was revealed that Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia Group used confidentiality clauses when settling claims of workplace harassment.
Such agreements are widely used and legal. They are often required to protect commercial interests but in some cases they were being used to cover up wrongdoing and serious misconduct in the workplace.
British universities are being asked by the government to pledge not to use NDAs in dealing with complaints of sexual misconduct, bullying and other forms of harassment.
The agreements can prevent signatories from talking to family, friends and the media but are not supposed to stop public interest whistleblowing.
Perkins is a founder of the Can’t Buy My Silence campaign, which aims to stamp out the misuse of NDAs. The campaign describes NDAs as “contracts created to protect trade secrets but when used wrongly become secret settlement contracts used to hide wrongdoing and sometimes criminal acts by buying the silence of a victim or whistleblower”. It adds NDAs “are sometimes referred to as confidentiality or compromise agreements”.

After a morning of very British pomp and ceremony, the Royal Family is now proceeding towards St George’s Chapel, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, to attend the funeral of Prince Philip.

In line with his wishes and UK Covid-19 guidelines for funerals, the Duke of Edinburgh will receive a scaled back send-off, attended by 30 members of the royal family, including his wife Queen Elizabeth II, children, and grandchildren, not least Prince Harry who has flown in from the United States.
However, this morning has seen a number of military ceremonies and marches to mark the occasion, as well as marching bands and plenty of tasteful royal pageantry. Hundreds of well-wishers have gathered in Windsor and multiple UK and U.S. TV networks are covering the event in full.

The short Royal Family procession is due to begin at 2:45PM local time in the UK, which is 9:45AM ET and 6:45AM PT. Prince Philip’s coffin will be carried in a specially designed Land Rover, while members of the royal family will follow behind on foot, including his son Prince Charles.
The 50-minute ceremonial funeral takes place at 3PM, beginning as the coffin enters St. George’s Chapel, where it will be received by the Archbishop of Canterbury. There will a national minute of silence before the commencement of the service.

PĂ„ söndag Ă€r det dags för Ă„rets Oscarsgala, för första gĂ„ngen sedan 1989 helt utan programledare. Överlag har det varit ett Ă„r prĂ€glat av förĂ€ndringsvilja hos Oscarsakademin; i augusti avslöjade man att en helt ny kategori – »outstanding achievment in popular film« – skulle göra debut samt att tv-sĂ€ndningen skulle kortas ner till tre timmar. Efter stark kritik slopades, Ă„tminstone för i Ă„r, det första förslaget.
Men akademin nöjde sig inte dĂ€r. Den 11:e februari i Ă„r meddelade man att fyra kategorier – Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Live Action Short och Best Makeup and Hairstyling – planerades att delas ut under reklampauser för att spara tid. Återigen ilsknade filmvĂ€rlden till, bland annat fjolĂ„rets vinnare Guillermo del Toro som pĂ„ Twitter pĂ„pekade det uppenbara:
If I may: I would not presume to suggest what categories to cut during the Oscars show but – Cinematography and Editing are at the very heart of our craft. They are not inherited from a theatrical tradition or a literary tradition: they are cinema itself.

In the history of CINEMA, masterpieces have existed without sound, without color, without a story, without actors and without music. No one single film has ever existed without CINEMAtography and without editing.
Efter pÄtryckningar frÄn hela industrin (bland annat ett öppet brev frÄn The American Society of Cinematographers, signerat av Martin Scorsese och Brad Pitt) tog akademin tillbaka sitt beslut. Jakten pÄ tittarsiffror fortsÀtter med andra ord och pÄ söndag fÄr vi se om akademin har nÄgra fler ess i rockÀrmen.
Men nog om det. Oscarsgalan Àr nÄgot av en helig hÀndelse för mig, och som vanligt har jag tippat vinnare i samtliga kategorier. Förra Äret lyckades jag pricka in 20 av 24 vinnare, vilket blir svÄrslaget i Är dÄ ovanligt mÄnga kategorier kÀnns ovissa. Markerar mina tippade vinnare i fetstil.
Best Picture:
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “Roma” “A Star Is Born” “Vice”
Som flera journalister har pĂ„pekat Ă€r Ă„rets Best Picture-kategori den jĂ€mnaste nĂ„gonsin sett till den jĂ€mna fördelningen av filmpriser under de senaste mĂ„naderna. Faktum Ă€r att det gĂ„r att göra ett mer eller mindre rimligt case för vilken som helst av de Ă„tta filmerna. Samtliga Ă„tta filmer har minst fem Oscarsnomineringar var – bara en sĂ„dan sak. Men vissa Ă€r sĂ„klart troligare vinnare Ă€n andra. NĂ€r man tittar pĂ„ de statistiskt starkaste indikatorerna pĂ„ Best Picture-vinnaren – ensemble-nominering pĂ„ Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), vinster pĂ„ Directors Guild Awards (DGA) och Producers Guild Awards (PGA) samt Oscarsnomineringar för regi, manus och klippning – blir man inte mycket klokare. Kortfattat: »Green Book« vann PGA, varpĂ„ »Roma« vann DGA – men ingen av dem nominerades för SAG – som »Black Panther« vann. Å andra sidan saknar »Green Book« Oscarsnominering för regi, »Roma« saknar för klippning samt »Black Panther« saknar för manus, klippning och skĂ„despeleri.
Den tidigaste förhandsfavoriten var publiksuccén »A Star is Born«. Det krÀvs dock en extremt stark och unisont hyllad film för att bibehÄlla momentum under en hel OscarssÀsong; »A Star is Born« har tyvÀrr inte lyckats med det utan snarare tvÀrtom fallit nÄgot i glömska. Att Bradley Cooper inte nominerades för sin regi stÀrker inte dess chanser heller. 
IstĂ€llet Ă€r det CuarĂłns delvis sjĂ€lvbiografiska »Roma« och Peter Farrellys omdiskuterade men hyllade »Green Book« som fĂ„r anses bĂ€ra favoritskapet. »Roma« distribueras av Netflix, som tidigare inte har lyckats kamma hem en enda nominering för Best Picture. Dessutom vore »Roma« den första icke-engelsksprĂ„kiga filmen att vinna Best Picture nĂ„gonsin. Å andra sidan Ă€r streamingtrenden oundviklig och det hĂ€r kan vara det perfekta lĂ€get för Oscarsakademin att uppfattas som progressiv genom att belöna »Roma«. NĂ„got som direkt talar för filmen Ă€r dess tvĂ„ birolls- och huvudrollsnomineringar för Yalitza Aparicio och Marina de Tavira, vilket visar pĂ„ ett stort stöd hos den största grenen inom juryn. 
Men det finns som sagt gott om utmanare. »Green Book« Àr den största, trots en hel del kontroverser kring filmens karaktÀrsskildringar. Det Àr en film som mÄnga har sett och som mÄnga har en Äsikt om, med en tung vinst pÄ PGA (som anvÀnder samma röstningsystem som Oscarn) i bagaget. Spike Lees »BlacKkKlansman« Àr nÄgot mer av en högoddsare, men om rösterna visar sig vara vÀldigt jÀmnt fördelade kan det öppna upp för en skrÀll. Detta dÄ röstningssystemet gynnar filmer som flest tycker Àr bra, men inte nödvÀndigt vis bÀst.  
I slutÀndan tror jag ÀndÄ att »Roma« kommer gÄ ur natten som vinnare och dÀrmed skriva in sig i historieböckerna.

Sedan den chockartade Golden Globe-vinsten för »Bohemian Rhapsody« har filmen skaffat sig ett stÀndigt tilltagande buzz, dÀr »Mr. Robot«-stjÀrnan Rami Maleks gestaltning av Freddy Mercury har seglat upp som personen att slÄ i huvudrollskategorin. FrÀmste utmanaren Àr Christian Bale för rollen som Dick Cheney, tidigare vicepresident för George W. Bush. Möjligtvis fÄr Cooper nÄgra extra sympatiröster pÄ grund av den överraskande uteblivna reginomineringen, men det rÀcker nog inte hela vÀgen till en vinst.

Med en vinst i bagaget för sin biroll i »Moonlight« för tvÄ Är sedan, och högaktuell i tredje sÀsongen av »True Detective«, pekar det mesta pÄ att Mahershala Ali springer hem Ànnu en guldgubbe av bara farten. Allt annat vore en stor skrÀll.

PÄ tal om »Moonlight«, sÄ missade regissören Barry Jenkins nya film, »If Beale Street Could Talk« nomineringar för Best Picture och Best Directing, men med goda chanser för Regina King att nÄ hela vÀgen till en vinst. Stone och Weisz riskerar att dela rösterna emellan sig, och de Taviras nominering var en överraskning i sig. Möjligtvis att stÀndigt omtyckta och skickliga Amy Adams kan utmana.

DÄ Sound Mixing oftast belönar musikfilmer har Chazelles rymdfilm/biopic större chans i den hÀr kategorin. Ironiskt för övrigt att en film med titeln »A Quiet Place« fÄr sin enda nominering i en ljudkategori...

NBC News Names Noah Oppenheim President, Deborah Turness Moves to International Role
Oppenheim left a screenwriting career in Los Angeles to return to New York and NBC News (where he worked many years ago). The success of the Natalie Portman vehicle Jackie, for which Oppenheim wrote the screenplay, fueled speculation that he would not remain at NBC News long-term. With the two news operations being seen as complementary, the deal expands NBC News' ability to cover Europe, where Brexit and other topics have been big stories.
It will also boost Euronews' U.S. coverage at a time when many Europeans remain in a state of anxiety about how President Donald Trump will affect America's role among its Western allies in Europe.Observers have said that Euronews could also benefit from having a partner that produces different formats and has increased its digital presence. Plus, its new U.S. partner could help Euronews further with its new mission statement of representing "all views."
